Philip Lee, a real-life chaebol (sort of)

girlfriday: So have you heard that Philip Lee is some real-life chaebol?
javabeans: Yeah, apparently his dad is this global businessman. Not strictly a chaebol but they’re stretching the term (of course). Here’s a picture of his gigantor house in the U.S. (But aren’t McMansions a dime a dozen here?)

girlfriday: So did his daddy buy his way into the industry?
javabeans: I heard rumors that he was connected, hence the notable role in Legend as his debut.
girlfriday: Well that explains visibility versus (lack of) acting talent.
javabeans: Yes. I wonder if Lee Jia is a chaebol too!
girlfriday: Hur hur.
javabeans: I mean, he’s not BAD in Secret Garden…
girlfriday: It was funny when he wanted to beat up Joo-won.
javabeans: Is this Episode 14?
girlfriday: Yup.
javabeans: I guess I’ll get there when I get there. (SIGH.) That was a pointed sigh.
girlfriday: There’s a good kiss, if that motivates you any.
javabeans: Do you think I’m that cheap?
girlfriday: Yes.
javabeans: Sadly that’s not enough this time. Normally I’d cave like a bear in winter.
girlfriday: Your bitterness is making your puns bad.
javabeans: Puns are always bad.
girlfriday: They are the lowest form of humor.
javabeans: So anyway, apparently this is all old news becoming new news again (though I missed it the first time) — there was an MBC “Success Stories” documentary in 2008 that featured clips of his monstrous home and his CEO dad, who runs some global IT business.
girlfriday: I missed it the first time too. So it’s new news to us!
javabeans: Though I did know he studied business and was getting his masters when he decided to break into the biz.
girlfriday: As the hot guy with good hair?
javabeans: I wonder what he’d look like with the army buzz.
girlfriday: I think he’s like Samson. Shave the hair, lose all powers.
javabeans: If he loses his hotness, he might have to learn real acting, though.
girlfriday: That’s a sad story.
javabeans: But good acting’ll make him hot again!
girlfriday: It’s almost like math…
javabeans: But without numbers.
girlfriday: The only kind I like.

Something about his eyes are a little unsettling to me. I keep getting distracted by them like you would stare at a mole on someone's face. If I look at him from the nose down, he's a very pretty man.

I actually can't tell if he's acting is bad because of the language barrier and the lines they give him. But he makes a convincing manager of an action school, who's all about the serious business.

When he was reading/mumbling through those English lines for Ra-Im, it sounded like he was high school kid reading his homework assignment aloud. That led me to assume English was his secondary language and maybe he was an exchange student in the US for awhile. Oops.

I'm all for Korean-Americans making it in Korea. I'd like to see him in a role where he really has to act. Hasn't shown much as yet. I'm also a little frightened by what he's done to his face.

Okay... I usually don't comment on articles that are past the 40 comment mark but...

Nothing against Philip, I actually thought he was really shmexy when he spoke in English in that one SG episode...

but...

is anyone else just a little bit turned-off/creeped out by his eyes? Anyone?

Bueller? Bueller?

His eyes, they seem to be closer to the bridge of the nose than what you would see in a usual face... and rounder than an average Korean's.

Anyhoo, I still find him hot - though I must admit I didn't when I first saw him on teevee. Just like what Benicio Del Torro is to me - an "acquired taste." ;) Oh well, to each her own. :)

I thought all along that JB and GF are one and the same person.

It seems I'm mistaken. Or am I?

he's got the ugly/sexy thing going... Does anyone else think all his features don't work together? AT ALL? If it's a completely new plastic face (it does look like it, and my cynical side believes it) then.... wasted money?

It's a good thing that the SG team casted him for that role because if they had casted someone charming and someone who could actually act, he would take away the shine from Kim Joo Won (which would be easy considering what a d*ck Joo Won can be). Then I would feel bad for the Director because he wouldn't get the girl in the end. And I'm really tired of feeling like that. So since Phillip Lee's character attracts no kind of emotion from me (except frustration), I don't mind that he won't get the girl.

This is so random and has no connection with Philip Lee at all. But you know who the real k-drama chaebol hero is? Choi Siwon. Apparently his family own a department store or something. So the dude is like..second generation good looking, charming chaebol AND an idol star.

I'm from around the same area in Virginia and I will say this Northern Virginia real estate prices are no joke, because of Washington, D.C. a lot of politicians, international businessmen, journalists, and diplomats have residences in the Fairfax/Vienna/McLean area. Living in Virginia versus Maryland which is just across the Potomac River is more prestigious because of the fact that it is the first state in the U.S. and it was the birthplace and home to most of America's founding fathers such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

The house itself isn't all that grand or special but as mentioned before the location is what makes it so expensive. To put it in perspective, a house that size about 30 miles from D.C. would cost about 500K, 10 miles or less from D.C. would cost at least around $6 million TODAY, and this is during a recession lol.

Just out of interest, what in his face do you think is plastic? I never noticed that... I always thought he was natural because his face looked quite 'unique' and usually when actors/actresses go under the knife, they end up looking very standard pretty (like... Noh Min-Woo in MGIAG was really obvious, I was surprised his face could move with that much plastic, pretty though it is, oh the pretty). But Philip Lee isn't really pretty or standard-looking, he has a very distinctive face, so I never thought....

Just out of curiosity.

I'm a family friend of Philip's from America, and his family lives in Virginia. Philip's dad's side of the family is pretty well off, the majority of Philip's uncles and cousins live in big houses. I know his dad's family moved over here to the states when they were young, because his younger brothers went to college here. Philip also has a younger sister who's really pretty, much better looking than Philip.

Thanks JB and GF for the news bit about Philip Lee. So he was the Blue Tiger thingy in The Legend.

I think my taste differs from majority but that's fine, I think he looks clean cut and attractive with long hair, like belonging out of this era, reminds me of Legolas, in the Lord of the Rings.

Nice to know more about him!

but you cant denie the fact that even if hes rich or what ever hes still got an engineering degree so hes a clever guy :)

this brings me onto another not so relevant point! i never expected kang dongwon to have graduated from Mechanical Engineering!!
hes soo hot and such a good actor i thought he would have graduated from theater or something which he also had graduated form gosh i love him more know !!

Love you girls, keep up the excellent job at making people smile and laugh everyday!

Just a thought or two.
If that top picture is the house they live in then I can assure you it is not 'a dime a dozen' A few million US dollars is more like it. In a gated community... if not in it's own grounds.
Why all the sour grapes about this actor. He is good to look at and a little different. Quite a change from the usual faces of K-actors. It is the ones who are different that we all like to discuss and mostly admire. So far I still remember him as a standout in 'The Legend,' and barely remember the BYJ character. (He really was strange)
I shall look forward to seeing Philip in more roles and as he gets the experience he will appeal to more audiences.

@79, Peggy, thanks, I agree with you. My husband builds custom homes and I can assure you that the house is not a dime a dozen. It looks like several million US dollars. Why all the fuss...PL and all of his family are all college educated, all from the same college which is a feat in itself. Give the guy a break...he was perfect for his role in Legend...subdued in AMS...personally, I think he is very handsome. Just give him time.

I saw his university graduation photo from this forum:

and his high school photo:

http://www.hancinema.net/lee-philip-graduation-picture-hot-topic--past-look-still-there-27456.html#!prettyPhoto

I like him, even if he's been under the knife...and I liked him in Legend...he was probably the only one who could take screen shots from BYJ. I read somewhere (or was it here in the comments?) that they are calling him BYJ Jr. Thoughts?
