Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1

javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.

girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!

javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.

girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.

javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.

girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”

javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”

girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.

javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!

girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!

javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?

girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.

javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!

girlfriday: And they get better each week!

Full House! I heard good reviews about it and I gave it a shot. While I wasn't really hooked, I got curious and watched more Kdramas. It was Coffee Prince and Goong that really sucked me in. I even remember reading recaps of Coffee Prince here at dramabeans because my copy of Coffee Prince suddenly messed up the subs!

That said, congratulations on your fifth year dramabeans! :D

Congrats on your 5year anniversary \o/
Even if I don't usually comment (I'm french and my english is lame, even if I understand it^^), it's been age since I stopped to count the hours I read you ^^ So thanks for this blog *_*

For the question now^^ My first drama love was Nodame Cantabile (sorry, not a kdrama :'( ^^)
I first watch HYD but was not staunch by it. Don't know why I pursue with Nodame Cantabile but I'm glad I did it, this was the beginning to my love for dramas, I never stop watching them after that *_* I marathon it in one day, and rewatched it.... don't even know how many time ^^' I think that no-one in my family was safe, they all was forced to watch it lol
Love the Nodame-Chiaki relationship, the "hug in the back" in the end; the concerts , the music, the relationship with their friends, and above all, the gales of laughter it gave me *____* Ahhh, simply talking about it, I want to rewatch it xD

Saatiya, hi!

Though we are talking kdramas here, I'm glad to meet a fellow Nodame-Cantabile fan. It's my favorite jdorama of all time and I have rewatched episodes of it, sometimes to relive the Nodame-Chiaki love story, sometimes for the music. I even have the two Final Movement movies (and of course, the OST) in my iPhone.

Do I really have to pic only one ? First I would like to tell Y'all ( yes I am from Texas ) why my love for K-drama runs deep . Last year I was diagnosed with four auto immune diseases , when my company found out i was terminated and i went into a serious downward spiral after that no longer could I do anything that I loved and continued to get worse I ended up with a severe case of major depression . When I couldn't even get myself out of bed physically and mentally the world of K-drama came to my rescue , I wanted to connect with the outside world somehow so I started surfing the net and came across this world that would help cure me . So I started powerwatching I was addicted immediately, I have a firm belief that they saved me . I have over come my depression and most of my symptoms have gotten better, so if I had to make a choice it would be Secret Garden.P.S.Thank you drama beans since you help my viewing choice and and bring this world to me a little closer

Stumbled upon She's On Duty one day on YouTube and it intrigued me enough to watch My Name Is Kim Sam Soon. The rest is history & I still can't explain it to my family.

Hmm, I grew up watching old HK dramas and J-dramas, but my love for k-dramas only kicked off when I was a young teen (around 2003/04) and that was all thanks to my mum. I think the first I ever watched was Dae Jang-geum - has anyone seen it? - it was massive back in the days... I, on the other, did not enjoy it...

The first one that got me hooked was Stairway To Heaven, starring Choi Ji-woo. Yes, it was longwinded and melodramatic, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless. Now that I've ventured further into k-dramaland, it's dropped way down my list of favourites, but my mum absolutely adores it and remains faithful to this very day! I can definitely see why the makjangs appeal to housewives...

---------------------

Happy 5th Anniversary and I hope everyone has a wonderful 2012~

Congratulations on your 5th anniversary. :D

The drama that got me hooked was Memories of Bali. First of all, the chemistry between Jo In Sung and Ha Ji Won is simply amazing! Apart from that, the story line was great and the acting, flawless. I loved the fact that it did not give the viewers a "happy ending" because it's actually very sickening to see the same finale for every drama. It also tackled on social issues like poverty and the hegemony of the rich. I definitely am a fan of that series, having watched it already for 8 times now. ^_^

May you guys continue with this blog because it has been a joy to read your articles every spare time I get. God bless.

Congratulations Javabeans and girlfriday!! Here's to another half decade of your amazing insights on dramaland :) my first k-drama was Stairways to Heaven which is a little embarassing because it is just full of those typical k-drama plotlines (amnesia, cancer, chaebols....sign) but I loved it largely because of Mr Kwon Sang Woo and so this catalysed my love for dramas since they were also filled with hotties ;)

My first drama was love was You're beautiful. I couldn't stop watching it after my friend who moved back to Hong Kong just before the summer recommended it to me as she felt I would love it. It instantly got me hooked with its creativeness, funny characters that had depth and the over all drama itself. I have been obsessed with dramas ever since, it actually got me so interested in Korea that i started to learn more about the place and now im wanting to train as a teacher to teach english in korea. Thanks for all the recaps you hav done, you have no idea how they helped me get my drama fix when I have needed to study for exams :) Happy New Year!!!

My first kdrama was Autumn in My Heart, dubbed in my native language. I thought Song Seung Hun was hot, and was in love with the storyline (and the soundtrack too)!!! After that, I started looking for the original one, which, at that time, was extremely hard. I hated dial-up connection. It was way too hard to find English subtitle. I did some research on the actors and actresses. I continued to search, but sometimes, found nothing. I did came upon a tv channel that was showing some KDramas (which no longer exists currently) with English subtitles. Then, I started borrowing from relatives. I became obsessed, and still am!!! Now, with better technology than then, I don't have to go around, looking like a crazy lady.

Happy 5-Year Anniversary!!

Delightful Girl Choon-hyang definitely started my love for dramas in general and for the Hong sisters dramas in particular. After that I was hooked and I started watching dramas one after the other! Some were better some weren't but DGCH is still my personal favourite! I never get tired of watching it! In fact, that is the only drama I have watched from beginning to end more than once!

my first k-drama was Cinderella man. At first i was interested in the name, i seriously thought there going to be some guy in a frilly dress with glass slippers but man was i wrong. One of my now FAVORITE actors Kwon Sang Woo was in there and made me laugh and sometimes made me drool over his six-pack putting that aside i decided i have to watch more of these and there i caught myself in dramaland.

Congratulations on your 5th anniversary and let this be the start of great new year for you.

The first drama I fell in love with was All about Eve. I watched the whole drama with my mum and in some scenes we both sobbed in our tissues and my brother was totally bewildered by us hahahah. I clearly remember I was rooting for the antagonist instead of the protagonist, because I thought she was so pitiful and prettier than ChaeRim... I also thought she fit Han JaeSuk more. It's also the drama that made my mum remember Jang Dong Gun's name xD. Oh well, so many memories... :) Before that I remember to watch a lot of HongKong dramas, but all about Eve was the first marking point to my KDrama addiction.

Congrats Dramabeans for the 5th annniversary!!!
Zillion thanks for javabeans and girlfriday for all these daily dozes of k-drama.

For me, it is Memories of Bali, though I watch some others like full house, endless love. I cannt help to be pulled out, and in the end insanely scream and hopeless for a couple of week from the out-of-the-box-on-my-brain, glek, ending.

And in here, Indonesia (where I live in Jakarta, the capital), it's quite rare of tv stations which can provide us with the updated drama, so your blog do charity to us.
It's kind a self-conscious addiction, but nothing wrong bout it, rite?

Thanks and big huges for you (^ ^)v

My first drama was Hana Kimi (花樣少年少女 / Hua Yang Shao Nian Shao Nu).

Even though, this is a Taiwanese drama. It was light and funny. I enjoyed the comic as a teen and loved how it was portrayed in real life. Since then, I've been a fan of tv dramas.

Currently, What's Up is quickly becoming one of the best dramas I've seen.

It was definitely 1st Shop of Coffee Prince, back in 2007, which is when I first started watching KDramas. That was my very first KDrama, and what a way to be introduced to this wild and wonderful world! I loved the music, the storyline, the acting, the cuteness, everything!!! That's also how I stumbled across this blog, because I was so obsessed I wanted to find anything and everything on the net to do with this drama, and of course your wonderful recaps came up in the search! paula.haynes12@gmail.com

Meteor garden (I hope that counts, since the question wasn't K-drama specific, but then again I shouldn't have assumed Asian and included American but I haven't) Anyway, MG with all its faults took me from smirking and laughing at the dodgy acting skills and posing and having champagne on college campus for lunch to falling in love with profound and heart twisting scenes. Shan cai searching for her pendant, Daoming Si crying in front of his friends. A love triangle where lines are drawn, erased and drawn again to include everyone. It expounded so beautifully how love can not be contained in one definition alone and can range from protection to empathy to sacrifice. Beautiful!

I will never forget Daoming Si and Shan Cai the natural heirs of Darcy and Elizabeth. Sure they don't shine as bright BUT for me it is always about the distance travelled and Daoming Si and Shancai definitely journeyed further.

Although I am always hesitant to recommend MG to others for it can not compete in terms of glamour with modern dramas, if you can get past all its faults and shady notes you will find that those heart warming and delightful moments shine out all the brighter for it.

Congratulations on reaching your 5th year, and thank you for bringing this website to the masses. And a special thank you for the weekly immensely anticipated 1n2d recaps.

My first kdrama was Pasta, after that I watched Coffee Prince and that was the drama that did it for me. No other drama since then has managed to bring out the addict in me. Maybe if 1n2d was a drama then that would be the one to beat Coffee Prince hands down. That's the show that made me feel like I can understand Korean even if I don't. And because of that show it seems like I can read Korean now, even though I don't understand what I'm reading. Go figure.

Congratulations again, and may there be many more anniversaries!

I started out with Japanese comedies, like Gokusen and Trick and Nodame! My coworker shared her DVD set of 'Bad Love', I was hooked! Marathon viewing until the end and I had to work in the mornings! Then I saw First Shop of the Coffee Prince. Now, it is the Korean drama that calls to me over anything else.

Thank you for making this such a rich experience. I knew I was missing some key points in the dramas and went searching for help. I found Drama Beans!

BOF was my first 'addiction' - I remember staying up to crazy o clock waiting for new episodes to come out.

Coffee Prince was my first love though. I was so excited, in love with this genre I'd stumbled upon. Strangely enough though, not only did I love it then, but 3 yrs on it's still on of my favourite dramas :)

Now I'm feeling all sentimental... I think I'm going to have to rewatch it for the 4th time!!

For me, it was My Girl <3 Boys Before Flowers was my first Korean Drama, but My Girl sucked me in completely. If you love romantic comedies, there is absolutely no way you won't fall for your first Hong Sister drama. Their humour is gorgeous and when you watch it for the first time it's also new and unique and keeps you watching on the edge of your chair, gnawing at your teeth watching one episode after the other. And I have to say Lee Da Hae's special charm as the heroine played a very big role, too. She was so selfless in her role, it felt like she gave herself up completely to deliver the funny, cunning and yet stupid, charming Ju Yu Rin. And I will never forget Lee Jun Ki's first scene in My Girl. Maria and Carlos! It is epic. I'm greatful My Girl felt like the best Drama I'd ever seen at that time, because it made me fall in love with K-Drama irrevocably... and that makes up a lot of who I am today. Haha! :)

i think it was around 2004 or 2005 when i was skipping through the channels and saw HOTELIER (it was on the azn channel). at first i didn't know what language they were speaking, for a second i thought they were speaking tagalog (some words sounded filipino) then later i figured out it was in korean.

i still remember the first scene that i watched. it was a conversation between SHG & PJC's character at the hotel rooftop. i thought, hey they kinda look cute together~ so i stayed and continued to watch. next thing you know, i'm back at the same channel the next day waiting for the episode to start. now here i am~

i totally fell in love with BYJ and started to search him up online and whatnot (obsess much?).

My first korean drama was Full House. Its where its started, like its ok if i sleep only 3-4 hours and sleeping at 2am or 3am then later go to duty. And where the black from my lower eyelids is becoming visible. And when i got home from duty i have to play it again until i finish the entire CD then watch again another one which is Stairway to Heaven which got my friends crying everytime and have their eyes fluffy the next day. And from there, its like watching kdrama is our past time like it become our hobby. Since we are working here in abroad, we always ask our collegues to buy us CDs of the latest kdrama. From that moment not only the kdrama, but my world open up to jdrama, chinese drama, and taiwanese drama and their artist. And because i become so addicted to kdrama that i stumble on your blog and everytime i can't find an english translation from the drama that i'm watching i always check your blog if someone from your staff will be doing the recaps. Sometimes i read the recaps then watch the drama.Hehehehe... Happy 5th Anniversary!!! Wow! Wish you more years to come...

"Bad Guy." Much like the title, it was wrong for me, but it felt too good to give up. I craved each episode so much my gut ached. I couldn't think of much else, and even though I tried to distract myself with other dramas during the show's hiatus, it was all I wanted. Yes, it betrayed me at the end, leaving me... lost (WTF happened! We were doing so well..).

I know better, but I still miss it.
