Potential drama coupling: Jung Il-woo and UEE

Good news, bad news: Jung Il-woo is in talks to take on his next TV role, but it’s in a weekend family drama. My response is both “Fifty episodes, groan” and “But on the upside, I get to see him for six months…”

The drama is MBC’s Gold Rainbow, which recently offered its leading lady role to UEE, who is still considering. The show is about seven orphans who grow up together and form their own family, with UEE playing eldest sister to the brood.

Speaking of whom, the drama actually went full Dickens and named the poor orphan girl Baek Won, which sorta cracks me up and sorta makes me groan, seeing as how baek won means a hundred won, which is about the value of a dime. (It was also briefly a nickname for IU’s character in You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin, since the admiral Lee Soon-shin is the man on the coin, and Jo Jung-seok would teasingly call her “Hundred Won” — at least until the public put on its petty outrage hat and complained that the show was disrespecting a legendary war hero. Insert eye-roll.)

The role being offered to Jung Il-woo is of a prosecutor named Do Young, although now I kind of want the show to stick with the People As Monetary Values shtick and name him something like Chun Man, or maybe Chun Eok if they’re feeling really ambitious. (Chun man won = ten grand, chun eok won = 10 mil.) ‘Cause where there’s a Candy-esque orphan heroine, a rich dapper hero can’t be far away, no?

I do like the match-up, since Jung Il-woo and UEE seem like they’d make a cute romantic pairing — it would be enough to get me to try the show out, despite not finding the writer’s May Queen credits all that compelling. And while they haven’t worked together before, maybe my brain thinks the combo sounds familiar because Jung Il-woo’s last drama role, Prince Yang-myung in The Moon That Embraces the Sun, was a character initially to be played by Joo-won, who was still juggling his role in the weekend family drama Ojakkyo Brothers, where he romanced UEE. (They were adorable and sweet and definitely a main source of that show’s addictiveness.) I don’t find Jung Il-woo or Joo-won to be the least bit similar in acting style or vibe or image, but they do sort of fit in the same category of young leading men. So it makes sense.

Gold Rainbow will finalize its casting decisions soon and begins script rehearsals early next month, to replace Scandal in November.

I like the sound of Jung Il Woo & Uee pairing up in a drama BUT not digging the fact that it is a weekend drama with 50 episodes.

the problem isn't that it has 50 episodes but that the writer is of May Queen! In 30 episodes she was soooo slow to show any romance between the main couple making people doubt if they would ever be a couple, imagine on a 50+ drama!

May Queen was 38 episodes of useless misunderstanding and illogical political choices made by all the characters. So much useless scenes and plot after episode 20.

The premise sounds mediocre and add weekend family drama to it and that makes it definitely boring....

Weekend family dramas can be just as good as any weekday 24-episoder - Ojakkyo Brothers and the original High Kick (sitcom, but still) taught me that.

I just hope to god this is more up to the standard of Uee's last weekend drama (OB)and not like its timeslot predecessor (You're The Worst Lee Soon Shin)

Arg a 50 ep drama, I like them both but I don't know if I can commit myself to it without getting bored. Hopefully it's so good that 50 eps will fly by in no time >.<

And woah, I didn't know Joo Won was meant to be in TMTETS! I wonder how that would have turned out O.o

glad joo won choose gaksital than TMETS, actually Yang myung charracter is more interesting than the king charracter in TMETS but I 'm not really like that drama, the king romance is really uninteresting, kind of boring

its not that he chose gaksital over the TMETS but that the ojakgyo extension made it impossible for him to do TMETS as initally planned.

and then the gaksital role came along. thats my understanding of it.

I read the interview of Gaksital PD, that he take Joo won from TMETS because he couldn't find any young actor that fit Lee Kang to role beside joo won, eventhought joo won already prepare for his role in TMETS Nn he has to apologize to MBC because of that, so I think Ojakgyo Brother extension is just excuse

True. What a lot of viewers who are backing away from watching this due to the 50+ EPs need to know is that when a family-style drama has really good acting, writing, directing, then the eps just FLY - by the same as watching a really good 16-20+ Kdrama.
"You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly" was so good it just zoomed by and I didn't want it to end at 56? eps. "Smile, Dong Hae" was another.

On the other hand, "A Thousand Kisses" had me grabbing a rope and looking for a rafter.

@Onewcondition yep Joo won was offered JIW role in TMTETS but because of Gaksital role/preparation he had to reject TMTETS (Gaksital director said that in an interview if I remember correctly...)

He did sign on but then later rejected Moon/Sun because Ojakgyo Brothers got extended (due to high ratings). The filming overlapped so he had to drop out.

i guess the real reason is because of gaksital, Ojakgyo Brother extension is just to make it more polite, I read that they have to make sorry statement to MBC.

May Queen writer = most definitely makjang at some point or another... hopefully there is waaaaaay more cuteness/banter than there was in LSS (that drama had so much potential!).

I don't mind makjang elements in family dramas because there are 50 episodes and there is only so much happiness you can have without conflicts/struggles, but fingers crossed its not 40 episodes of makjang & 10 happy ones -_- It better be balanced out or i'm gonna drop out like I did with LSS.

I still haven't forgiven the 2nd lead guy marrying the enemy's daughter and being a douche bag.

Just out of curiousity are there any native Koreans here who reads the online internal industry gossip / rumor reports sourced from background staff members? Alright, at the beginning I did give them the benefit of doubt but overtime most of them turned out to be pretty damn true, such as the prediction of the Won Bin and Lee Shi Young couple and Lee Seung Gi dated a member of the idol group KARA for quite some time.

Anyway, in the most recent report it speculates that Uee and idol singer Kim Hyun Joong of SS501 has started dating for quite some time after meeting each other on the set of a variety show. Although I adore both Jung Il Woo and Uee respectively, now I can't really see them as a potential couple. Although I can imagine shipping them greatly before reading this piece of rumor. Now I understand another aspect as to why celebrities shouldn't reveal their relationships.

KHJ and UEE? Wow. Watching BF and I was actually shipping her with YSY coz I still want a KHJ/Jung So-min pairing. ;)

0

Required fields are marked *

Well I think this is just the case of being able to separate reality and fiction. If UEE and KHJ are dating, it won't make JIW and UEE's potential chemistry and cuteness any less awesome to me.

I think celebrities should be allowed to date who they want, and reveal it to the public if they want to. It's their lives, and it doesn't spoil my enjoyment of their dramas/films :').

I still prefer if Uee is paired with KHJ in any drama because their chemistry in BFF are awesome. But still if its Uee the I for sure 100% will support this drama.

I wish it's a romcom though, something like Wish Upon A Star, a story with a sad premise but turned to be hilarious and super cute. In WUAS, there were 6 orphans, with the lead as the oldest and a super cute baby as the youngest. I hope on this drama, the youngest is also a baby.

Jung Il Woo <3 <3 <3 My wait is finally over but I'm disappointed. A 50 episode daily drama might not allow for that Jung Il Woo intensity that I love until maybe the last quarter and though as you correctly point out it would mean getting a weekly fix for a very long time, it doesn't guarantee anything worthwhile or worthy of his ability nor amount of time on screen. Still I've eaten my words more often than not in the past and if he's finally signed to something, then I'll place my trust in his choice.

chun eok is not $ 10 mil, it is $ 100 mil

eok = 100,000,000 (won)

so, chun eok is = 1000 X 100,000,000

which is = 100,000,000,000 (won)

approximate conversion {divided by 1000 (won) } : 100,000,000,000 / 1000

= $ 100,000,000

I used to be afraid to commit myself to dramas if they last 30+ episodes. Someone explained why long dramas are a good thing, if, that is they are good:

Would you rather watch 3 mediocre or bad/silly dramas in a row, or one long one?

That is how I started and stayed with Giant, Life is Beautiful, OB, etc. But, I also tried and dropped a number of them as well, which I cannot name since I don't recall the titles.

I love JIW and UEE separately. If the rest of the cast is bad, I can FF - like I did with Twinkle Twinkle...

Jung Il Woo, what does he remind me of? those medieval entertainers at carnivals, who can joke around and then do something so melancholy and yet ... with a spike of self-irony. Or....maybe Figaro from the opera. so I agree, Jung Il Woo´s style is TOTALLY different from Joo Won. It is like.... the latter is really serious about each of his roles, well, he treats them so seriously. while the first... he is, yes, a harlequin and a mountain hermit put together. sad and happy.
