Drama viewership ratings for the week of Jan. 4-10, 2016

Records, records everywhere! Cable is back with a vengeance after last week’s pre-emptions, with numbers climbing so high that the days of qualifying cable numbers by reminding readers that they inevitably will be lower seem to be over.

Sure, not all cable shows are posting numbers as high as Answer Me, 1988, which peaked as high as 20% during Saturday’s episode (the cast even got a vacation as a reward), but tvN seems to have the lockdown on competition lately. Not only does it have a star pupil in Answer Me, but this week’s premiere of Cheese in the Trap broke records for being the cable channel’s highest earner for a Monday drama. Well, according to the media anyway—they seemed to have forgotten that Answer Me 1997 was a Mon-Tue drama too. Regardless, Tuesday’s episode of Cheese jumped an entire point, which leaves it poised to become a real contender in the primetime ratings race usually only coveted by the Big 3.

Aside from that, it’s mostly moms and daughters filling the weekend slots, with Please, Mom battling it out with My Daughter Geum Sa-wol for the top spot. I’m watching the former of the two, and am enjoying it despite myself. It’s not great television by any means (ever ever ever), but sometimes it’s just fun to watch certifiable people on your screen doing absolutely nothing you haven’t seen before. Plus, it’s a Eugene makjang—that’s like guaranteed crazy. The entertaining kind, of course.

Sorry to hijack your post, but I wanted to post where DB will be able to find it.

HeadsNo2 - thanks for the weekly ratings, it's awesome to be able to have the numbers, all in one place. Just wandering, if it's possible to also add the times for each show, with the ratings - so we know which shows are going up head to head. Thus, even though they air on the same days, some shows air in a different time slot, etc.

Thanks

Yay for CITT! :) adorable show, I can't wait for the episodes this week.

Also, I think you didn't mention this, but where do you get these numbers? AGB or TNMS? Which is considered more "accurate"?

wow tvN daebak!!!! Answer Me 1988 could come super close to 20% for the finale episodes this week.

Cheese is so far really interesting and I'm happy to see it get off to a good start.

Lastly I'm proud that YSH has a good comeback in Remember.

One thing different about Remember is that high ratings were thanks to male audiences according to what I read.

I think because it's a legal drama that's why even the male audience are attracted to it.

Will Descendants of the Sun have the same timeslot as Remember? I'm worried because I both love SJK and YSH, and it's both their comeback project.

Wait, there's only one drama airing on Friday?

Happy for Cheese In The Trap, it's my new crack!
I don't how it happened, but I kinda like this shift to cable; it's like people would rather pay to watch good content.

I think there are also daily dramas airing at that time, but since DB doesn't count those dramas' ratings, Reply become the sole contender.

I hope Cheese in the Trap's ratings will grow even higher; with all that buzz that surrounded the casting and the original webtoon, I at least expect the drama to jump over the 5% hurdle easily.

I'm hoping it will. The first two episodes are impressive. If they can keep up with the pace, it might even reach at least 8%.

On a serious note, glad to see the ratings climb and the happy to see that they got a well deserved vacation to relax.

Cheese in the Trap is off to a great start and I'm very happy to have another show to look forward to. I'm sorta greedy for Six Flying Dragons though. Along with the new drama Moorim starting, I wonder how the ratings will shift.

Moorim looks kinda bad?

I think ratings should be around 5% for it. With cheese in the trap now airing I think hello Venus viewers will flip to that.

Is anyone watching Jang Young-shil? How is it?

It's okay? Not great, but I wouldn't call it bad either. I'm on episode 3 and the childhood section is already over, which is always a plus. Kim Young-cheol makes a great king, and some of the stuff about the relationship between astronomy and the divine right to rule is pretty interesting, though I think I learned more about that by reading through the soompi thread than by watching the drama lol. And if it's not subtle, at least it's not overdramatic so far, either--the second episode provided a nice dose of reality after the first episode's improbable optimism. Whether the adult Yeong-sil busts out of the contraints of reality (he is a geeeenius after all lol) or continues to navigate within historical-ish conditions of possibility to find success, remains to be seen.

tl;dr. If you're looking for a currently airing sageuk to pick up, you could do a lot worse.

I'm up to eps 3 now and I think it's just ok. I was going to record it but it's kind of not worth it. Anyone interested in science will probably find it interesting.

I'm glad to see the grown ups already. I'm not very fond of child actors in sageuks lately. They are not as good as Yeo Jin Goo, Kim Yoo Jung, Park Eun Bin era even the young Moon Geun-young in the Last Empress. I'll add Kim So-Hyun to the list of child actors who raised the bar so high early in their career.

Now I remember why I hate most of the Joseon sageuks. That same familiar set up. The nobles are always killing or beating the crap out of the poor peasants in the beginning and the hate over the hero is always over the top. That freaking maternal line that won't allow a son of a nobleman to be treated as one or even an opportunity to cultivate their talents.

Jung Ha-Yeon, where are you?

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, the kid who played Yeong-sil was really bad. He just would not stop smiling, no matter what happened. It's sad that these kids aren't up to snuff, but on the other hand, I'm really excited for Yeo Jin-goo, Kim Yoo-jung, and everyone to grow up. Cannot wait for them to headline their own dramas. The gen in their mid-late 20s right now does very little for me lol.

Yeah, the Joseon sageuk that break the mold are always the best (eg Cruel Palace, Conspiracy in the Court, and I loved Chuno even though a lot of people didn't). But if it's just going to be the same old peasant vs. noble rags-to-riches success story, it needs something extra to be worth it. Like Sangdo for example.

idk. I might go back to Merchant. I'm only on episode 10, but where I left off it was trying to do something a little different, at least. I get why a lot of people are upset that Jang Hyuk hasn't gotten around to selling stuff, but at the same time I like that so far it hasn't been about success, so much as the cost of success/ambition. It's pretty soapy, but I think a sageuk about greed, betrayal, and revenge has a lot going for it lol.

I like it so far (I like much better than first eps of Gaekju/master of trade). And it was icing on the top to have Daehan and Manse as cameos in ep 4 (it was too short tho).

Thank you Dramabeans. I love that you give us the weekly ratings. I loved the first 2 episodes of Cheese in the Trap.

I love Jang Yeong Sil. I love "I Have a Lover" - fabulous script and amazing performance from both Kim Hyun-Joo and Ji Jin-Hee. I love what I have seen from My Daughter Geum Sa-Wol (which consistently comes in first or 2nd place) but Viki takes like 3-4 weeks to sub it. Currently they are 4 weeks behind :(

I also like Remember, but I wish there was more depth to the characters.

So glad for CITT ratings and hope it'll continue to climb up. i had a feeling the rating will be high since it generated so much buzz and koreans like this webtoon so much (so as i!) also glad for PHJ and KGE , they really had done so well to make us addict from the start.

so the ratings for OMV were solid but not great..well it goes to show that despite the great OTP and chemistry the show didn't have something special to offer. still need to finish 2 last ep. tho.

and lastly, happy for the rise in ratings for remember alsthough i didn't watch last week ep. yet but it's really good show hope it won't yong pal on us later -_-

I watched both cheese in the trap and remember war of son and it's really good. Cheese in the trap is beyond expectation and really fun. Park hae jin is look exactly like yoo jung in manhwa. But the one who play baek in ha is really bad. Her facial expression is so awkward to the poin to make me don't want to watch her scene

TvN and SBS continue to deliver the ratings.

KBS is realllly riding that struggle bus. Oh My Venus is a certified flop, and they had So Ji Sub as the lead.

On the other hand, I still have not watched any of the Reply/Answer me series yet but I've heard many many good things about each and every one of them. I may have to give them a try some time.

Just because your ship has sunk doesn't make the drama bad. There were so many heartwarming family and friendship moments that will tug your heart in the best way possible. And it's very realistic too, something K-Dramas often lacked.
@msmilkt you should definitely give it a try! But don't jump into any ship early on because there are so many nuances and subtle hints throughout the drama that were oh so often ignored by some people who are too focus on their shipping

I like SSF. I crack up when three main male characters (chairman and his son, and our soft-heart gangster hero) talk (on their accents). Even though the chairman and his son are annoying, I can't hate them because I love their speaking (It is ChoongChung province accent - known for relaxed and slow personalities). Their actings are great and I love the bonds between husband and wife.

However I can see why ratings are low because there is no real conflict or secrets (cliches) people can look forward to every episode.

Should I jump onto the Answer Me bandwagon?

I Have A Lover was exciting at first but it is becoming repetitive almost every single episode. I would skip a number of it and then jump to the latest. I didn't miss a lot really.

Required fields are marked *

I'm following Answer Me 1988, Cheese in the Trap and My Daughter Geum Sa Wol! The first two by tvn is just so good and captivating! and those who are scared to jump on the "bandwagon" re 1988, come on! jump if you need to jump! it's just too good to miss, or watch it when it's already over airing (well, 2 episodes more and it ends).

Geum Sawol however, is frustrating (it's a weekend drama, a bit given), but the start was really good. It's still good btw, but the plot is still frustrating: the lead is helpless and the evil is still alive after all he's done.
