Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

It’s the weekend, which means it’s time to check back in to see what we’re all watching. I’ve been busy catching up on everything, and right now it feels like I’m at the point where I’m finishing a lot of dinners just to clean the plates, which at least brings with it a certain sense of satisfaction. What’s the show that’s been keeping you coming back for more? –javabeans

Tomorrow With You: For me, this drama is much more effective as a mystery thriller than it is as a romance. I’ve given up on buying into the love connection (for whatever reason, it doesn’t ring true for me), but I am feeling more responsive to the suspense thriller, and wish they’d condensed Episodes 3 through 9 into half their time so we got to the murder faster, and to the Final Destination-esque pull of a fate that won’t be thwarted.

Strong Woman Do Bong-soon: I’m really loving the zaniness of this show. It’s not the kind of drama I watch for emotional resonance or relatability—it’s screwball and stylized and strange, kind of like a Wes Anderson movie with a K-drama-fied bent. And I love how much Park Hyung-shik is into the heroine; I don’t exactly know why, but it’s part of its charm, because he is maybe the only person on the planet who would be that into this girl.

You’re Too Much: I’m not sure yet whether I’m in this to the end, but the first two episodes were pretty fast-paced and breezy for a weekend show. I was really warming up to the unconventional friendship between Uhm Jung-hwa and Gu Hye-sun and thought it could really make for a feel-good, woman-positive show… and then Episode 2 ended and I went, “Oh, so that’s where we’re going, huh?” On the one hand, Uhm Jung-hwa is the lead character so I suppose we can’t hate her too much, but I’m very curious to know how she and Gu Hye-sun will continue from now. Rivals? Frenemies? Estranged BFFs?

Father, I’ll Take Care of You: Interestingly, I like it better that sweet, benevolent Dad is being shown in a negative light now, just as the blinders come off the maknae son’s eyes. I don’t like that Dad’s kind of a jackass now, necessarily, but it does make me feel more for the estranged brothers and the conflicted revenge-and-reconciliation plotline that’s developing. I still don’t really care about the lost chaebol girl storyline, so if Dong-hee’s going to be some rediscovered princess, I just want to get there already. Enough dancing around it!

Introverted Boss: Jang Hee-jin’s straight-talking side character is a breath of fresh air, and I like the weird friendship springing up between her and Ro-woon—I wish we’d had more of their odd rivalry earlier, because it’s quirky and funny when the rest of the show is kind of bland. As for the emotionally damaged sister and the friend and the suicide mystery, eh, well I’m glad we finally got past that point, even if it did take most of the show to get here. I’m hoping next week’s shows will just be happy filler ending stuff, because even if it’s filler, it’s more pleasant than the annoying angst.

Three Color Fantasy: Queen of the Ring: This one’s all Kim Seul-gi, all the way. I actually don’t know quite how I feel about this premise—where the heroine comes from a long line of ugly women who trick their beautiful husbands into marrying them by bewitching them with a ring that makes the man think his wife is beautiful—because it seems partly funny, and partly offensive somehow. And Ahn Hyo-sub was enough of a dick to Seul-gi when he thought she was ugly that I’m not sure I can come around to him falling for her (I’m rooting for her law school bestie, honestly). But it’s an interesting conflict and my inability to see an ending that I’d be perfectly content with has me curious to keep watching to see how the show solves its problem. (I just hope it figures that out successfully!)

Newlywed Diary: Jae-hyun is such a cutely romantic husband—it’s evident that he’s primarily driven by the desire to make his wife happy. I’m sure he’s got his shortcomings (and I think the finale, which I’ve yet to watch, will be showing some of them) but mostly, I come out of this show thinking they’re a well-matched pair that I hope stay happy for a long, long time. As for specific moments: That trip to visit Hye-sun’s parents’ house in the countryside was entertainingly awkward, with Jae-hyun struggling to converse with his taciturn in-laws and Hye-sun dying laughing from a distance. I mean, I felt his pain! It was just also funny!

girlfriday

Strong Woman Do Bong-soon: I rarely watch clips days after I’ve seen an episode unless it has a funny outtake or something, but with this show, I find myself rewatching the funny parts over and over. It’s just so quirky and hilarious. That Bodyguard princess-carry had me in stitches.

Defendant: I was going to flip a table if they lost the daughter one more time, so I think they knew to wrap up that storyline just in time, and with a very satisfying family reunion at that. That little girl could pull tears from a stone.

Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People: I kind of missed the caper element of the show this week, but I do really appreciate the way it integrates history into the narrative without being too dry. It was pretty savvy of Gil-dong to use the king’s paranoia and insecurity against him, and a strong rivalry is starting to form as we see both men gain a little more power.

Tomorrow With You: It took WAY too long for Ma-rin to find out that she’s a time traveler’s wife, but it’s a refreshing change in their relationship dynamic, since before I always felt weird about all the secrets So-joon was keeping from her. Also, he should really listen to his wife more often, because his ideas for how to fix the future are always terribly wrong.

Introverted Boss: I’m so bored by the sister, and this past week it was aaaaalllll about the sister and the past trauma. Basically, I got a lot of cleaning done during this week’s episodes.

Super Family 2017: I love that this show rewards us self-declared addicts with all those cute little drama “easter eggs” (this week’s episodes brought to you by Something Happened in Bali). I’m still giggling over the old-school confession set to the Lovers in Paris OST as Chun-il grabs his Candy-like brother (by the wrist, of course!) and runs away with him. Yet, even with all the absurd humor, the show remains painfully relatable in all the best ways, although I die a little inside when I think about how Chun-il was so eager to stage a “Happy Menstruation Day” celebration for Ik-hee. Apparently cringeworthy dad moments are also universal. On a more shallow note, I’m pleased that my beloved Hoya finally got to speak more than one line.

New Journey to the West: Aw, I’m sad that this trip is over, but I’m also relieved that they didn’t get the final dragon ball, simply based on an unfounded theory I have that if the guys actually win then they won’t try as hard next time. Um, because there is going to be a next time, right? Right?

Strong Woman Do Bong-soon: I really wanted to like this show (the caaaaaaast!), so even though the logic, humor, and editing wasn’t really working for me in the first two episodes, I gave it another chance thinking maybe it would have settled in or perhaps I’d be in a more receptive mood. Despite trying to give the show the benefit of the doubt, using Min-hyuk’s supposed sexuality as punchlines for jokes that weren’t funny was a huge turn-off and my official breaking point. I guess I’ll have to wait for her next project to get my Park Bo-young fix.

Strong Woman Do Bong-soon: It has everything and everyone I like in it. Park Bo-young is just the exact right balance of sass and cuteness, and Park Hyung-sik makes a great sidekick. Other people around me are raving about it, yet I’m not 100% glued to the screen when I watch. Why isn’t it meshing for me yet?

Saimdang, Light’s Diary: Hold up, Yang Se-jong’s character isn’t the same as Song Seung-heon’s character in the present timeline??? Trippy. Things just got way more interesting in the present. That said, Ji-yoon continues to underwhelm me. Don’t draw attention to the closet containing the super important painting!

Laica

Currently Recapping: Defendant

Strong Woman Do Bong-soon: Man, I love this show. Does it have flaws? Absolutely. I can’t get on board with the editing and I sometimes feel a problematic emotional distance from our heroine. But there is so much gold here, and the shiniest goldenest thing is Hyungshik as Min-hyuk. Do I understand what he sees in Bong-soon? Usually not. But it’s completely adorable to see him slowly coming to appreciate her anyway. I loved the scene where he sees the breakfast Bong-soon laid out for him, and eats it while remembering his mother. It’s less indicative of Bong-soon’s care for him (it’s a job to her, after all) than of his incredible loneliness in all the years since his mom died. And that’s heartbreaking, and makes me root for Bong-soon to become a permanent fixture in his life. I’m hoping next week gives us more plot movement and a clue or two about how Bong-soon’s powers work, and why they’ve suddenly gone out of control. A peek into that ridiculously cute head of hers would be nice too.

Chief Kim: I had fallen behind with this show, but I’m nearly caught up now, although I wasn’t able to watch this week’s episodes. This show isn’t reinventing the wheel, but I think the secret to its ratings success may be this: it combines a realistic and frankly depressing view of life as an cog in the heartless corporate machine with the hilarious, over-the-top origin story of the unlikeliest hero ever. It’s a nice bit of catharsis that brings both humor and the satisfaction of watching Namgoong Min epically stick it to the greedy executives that so often suck the blood of regular people like us. Plus, the cast has a warm and funny chemistry that just puts a smile on your face. I’ve never seen the actor that plays Myung-seok before, but now I want to watch an office rom-com starring this character, where he gets demoted for being, well, himself, and ends up falling for his extremely competent and no-nonsense boss, who begrudgingly whips him into shape but otherwise won’t give him the time of day. (There I go again, talking about the shows I want to watch rather the ones I actually get. Anyone listening up there?)

Introverted Boss: Oy. I only saw episode 13 this week, but I’m almost afraid to watch 14 because Yi-soo’s emotional blackmail is out of control, and she’s getting more manipulative as the show goes on. I had (tiny) hopes that the show might be using her character to explore mental health issues when her self-harm habit was revealed, but it’s clear now that’s not on the menu. (Another case of mental illness that was briefly mentioned but not addressed, like Ji-hye’s supposed depression.) I know there are people like Yi-soo in the world, so I guess points for getting this character so right that she literally turns my stomach, but I do prefer my rom-coms without female characters that threaten to off themselves in order to control those around them with pain and guilt. I’m also kind of disappointed with the resolution of the big reveal (partial reveal?) and especially how Woo-il’s character was handled. Why is everything now Yi-soo’s fault, when to me it’s seemed that Woo-il’s been the villain since the first episode? Are we just going to ignore how he pretty much assaulted Ji-hye and then blamed her for it to the guy she liked, in front of her? Ugh. At this point, all I want from this show is a good comeuppance and exit stage left for Woo-il and Yi-soo in episode 15, then an hour and a half of cute team dynamics and squishy romantic goodness between our OTP. Because we all know how important last impressions are for dramas.

Tomorrow With You is the only drama I'm watching currently. I can't watch anything else, as the others don't come close to the satisfaction Tomorrow With You gives me every week.

I am waiting for The Liar and His Lover. I'm liking the teasers.

I'm seeing lots of dramas in Netflix. A new player in town. So, I'm curious to know how everyone feels about it. Will dramas become more Westernized? Will they become more violent, gritty, and scandalous?

My guess is Netflix is interested in selling their subscription services in Korea so I don't necessarily think they'll be more Westernized. However, they do have a reputation for giving a lot of creative freedom to the people creating their original content. What I've noticed from viewing some of their Western content is there are some gems mixed in with stuff that others like but isn't my cup of tea mixed in with crap. I see no reason to think it will be any different in Korea. If I do see "violent, gritty, and scandalous?"....well, it's not like Koreans don't produce content like that; it's just in their movies.

Too true, too true! I see Netflix as doing the same thing for Korean shows it did for US shows: Provide a greater variety of content for a greater variety of viewers.

You might get grittier shows, but uh, the first Netflix original Kdrama to hit the streaming service is Love Alarm. Which sounds exactly like your cliche, cookie-cutter Korean teen romance drama.

No matter what, it sure will be interesting to see Netflix kdramas develop.

I'm interested in seeing what happens when you have creative control and no worries about ratings. Generally in the US, Netflix is pretty closed mouthed about what is popular. I mean, sure, House of Cards and it wins a lot of awards but does anyone know how many people watch it...I don't know if they've ever said and they don't have to!

I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with in this venue. The two I've heard of are the teen romance mentioned as well as the Joseon zombie drama. That's variety.

The dramas i've heard of are Kingdom from Signal writer and the drama from Snowpiercer director. The latter is technically a US drama with Korean crew. They will definitely not be rom-com.

I am grateful for more variety as well, and Netflix will be a great addition to the growing industry of Korean entertainment industry.

My concern is this. Before cable, many of the kdramas in the Big 3 were makjang, or rom-com with a**hole chaebol and fish kisses, and sageuks with that are historical. When tvN and jtbc started gaining viwers, the Big 3 have slowly change their dramas. They are moving away from too many makjang plots, romcoms have more passionate kisses and much nicer male leads. Sageuks have moved away from being historically accurate.

Now with another player coming in, will the Big 3 shifts again? When I first watched kdramas, I was fascinated with their culture, traditions, and family values. Will they come to an end one day?

I get what you are saying, I just think that nothing ever stays the same which is why soaps in the US, after a long run, have slowly been getting cancelled one after another. I think that is one of the reasons that Five Children was so popular; it dealt with things that I suspect are going on but we don't see much reflected in dramas...divorce, dealing with the ex and blended families.

I was glad to see the pendulum swing from the jerk male lead to an occasional nice guy. My problem is when they make the male lead almost perfect such as in DOTS or even in Five Children.

I guess I just think that regardless of what happens with Netflix (and it might not work out well), things will continue to change, but I do selfishly hope they continue to pop out a crazy makjang drama every once in a while.

I hope they don't try to imitate Hollywood and lose out on the good niche they have too!

Introverted Boss: I'm still not satisfied on the explanation of why the older sister commited suicide n dragged plot of the previous angst episode made me feel glad that it is coming to its finale next week. Phew !

Chief Kim: still delightful funny though the scenes on the corruption of the company still makes me 'puzzled'. I hope that SY is not a totally villain too. He's actually cute in a way too ;)

Missing 9 (finale): good anticipating plot but the last episode had me scratched head n it fell flat n feel rushed with lack of explanation n loose endings for some things.

Queen of the Ring: seems interesting though the plot on how (superficial) guys only look at beautiful gals kinda insult average looking/ugly gals. Haha.

SWDBS: funny n cute with the dark plot of the serial kidnapper who have the fetish for very slim gals as his brides. A little problem on the editing/continuation of scenes but so far I'm still enjoying our OTP's acting n the plot.

Voice : finale this week. Hope for the best. It better don't give me an open ending ok. One not-so-good ending (Missing 9) this week is enough :P

Hey, everyone! Let's get right down to it.

Tomorrow With You: (11/16) This is a show that I think would benefit from being a few episodes shorter. It tends to drag and things seem repetitive. I'm still enjoying it, though, and am curious enough to see it through to the end.

Strong Woman Do Bong-soon: (5/16) Park Hyung-sik and Park Bo-young are both such joys to watch. Not much else I have to say except that Ji-soo is surprisingly underwhelming in this role.

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju: (12/16) Ugh, just so cute. I actually might put this one on hold for a bit because I'm currently in the mood to watch something a bit more mature, but I still love it. Lee Sung-kyung is glorious!

It's Okay, That's Love: (4/16) Just started this one last night and I am enjoying it a lot! I really admire a show for focusing on something that rarely gets talked about in mainstream shows: mental health stigma. I swear, Gong Hyo-jin is magic. Whatever she is in is gold. I love her so much. Also, most of the time I think she’s just “girl next door” kind of pretty, but in this show she looks SO good! Her styling is great.

What shocked me is that I looked up the director and… it’s the same director as Moon Lovers?! I can see the similarities in directing style now (allll the close-ups, ha) but while Moon Lovers was a tonal mess with some awful music direction and just generally questionable editing/directing choices, I think it works in It’s Okay, That’s Love. There are still some song placements that strike me as a bit odd but it works with the overall slightly eccentric tone of the show. Also, the music is great. I love indie/folk rock, though, so that is why I like it so much.

Overall, I'm having a good drama watching experience lately. Let's hope it stays that way!

The PD worked with the writer of It's Okay That's Love on her other dramas, Padam Padam and That Winter the Wind Blows. I think his lack of experience in historicals and having a writer (on MLs) who he basically could (and as per reports) did boss around as well as inexperience in pre-production is what caused a lot of issues.

Yeah, from my pov Ji Hae Soo is the coolest character that GHJ had played in a drama up until now. Both Ji Hae Soo and Pyo Na Ri have awesome fashion sense, but I'm not sure why I feel like Ji Hae Soo exuding more coolness vibe. Is it perhaps she rocks that hair colour?

Bdw, if I consider all of her projects, Hee Jin from Love Fiction is her coolest character so far, appearance and characterisation wise.

About PD Kim, the take home message after Moon Lovers is that he should only work with writer Noh. Perhaps there is something about writer Noh's screenplay that works with PD Kim directorial style.

Another congratulatory message to PBY and team for breaking their rating record once again. 축하해!

Strong Woman - I'm a rom-com girl but this just isn't working for me. When you keep ending episodes annoyed, time to drop. You know I've never really understood complaints about aegyo until now, but yeah, Bong soon grates on my nerves something terrible.

Defendant - So satisfying this week. The pacing has been perfect for me, and now I'm back to being apprehensive about whether they can keep it up for four more episodes.

Tomorrow with You - I like the romance better than the mystery, but even that is a little lackluster for me right now. Maybe it's my mood because when I watch an episode, I do end up getting drawn in.

"Do I understand what he sees in Bong-soon? Usually not. But it’s completely adorable to see him slowly coming to appreciate her anyway"
LOL I'm so with you guys on this. Min Hyuk is the most compelling character and Hyung-sik's portait of him is pretty much the only reason I'm going on with this drama.
For the rest, I'm disappointed with the heroine, the script, the editing, the general tone, the frankly disturbing homophobic jokes, and Ji soo (WHY OH WHY) (at least everyobody knows he has a nice butt by episode 5).

SWPDS: I'm in it for the leads and, unlike many, I kind of like that she starts out somewhat unlikable on occasion. Also, I think Ji Soo is just playing a by-the-book cop. He's just kind of no nonsense. He played the same type character though a lawyer in Fantastic but there he had a naive, charming earnestness. I kind of like the drama has opportunity to flesh out the characters more but the tone is all over the place, and I just feel so bad for the secretary guy.

Eternal Love/Peach Orchard: Love Love Love it.

Voice: I would call this a solid though flawed drama, but it's all in how they finish it....crossing fingers.

Perfect Wife: Really one of my favorites right now. Don't know where it is going, but I actually like that. Would be totally fine with no romance at all.

Sunny Happiness: Trying to go back and watch some T-Dramas from back in the day. I have read this one goes full in with the cliches/contrivances in the 2nd half so I'll get ready to fast forward, but I'm enjoying it so far.

I think the writers went this way because he just played a by the book character in his last drama. As far as this being a comedic tone, they are dealing with someone who is kidnapping and keeping women in cages so I think it's fine to have him be all funny with the two leads together (where he is basically playing the clueless guy not in on the joke she is strong), but not so much regarding his job. That's just the way I see it though. The tone of this drama is a mess though I am enjoying it overall.

I can see why people don't like DBS because there are moments where she is very self-centred but I find that very real? Somehow I prefer that to all the selfless Candy's because I can't relate to female characters who are overly self-sacrificing. Here, I think DBS's inconsideration is well balanced by her sense of justice and how she stands up for other people. I loved it when she schooled that driver dude for picking on women, but shutting the hell up when a dude sticks up to him.

I have a hard time understanding why people DON'T like Bong Soon. She's adorable and full of sass. She can be petty, is prickly and isn't your typically nice herione but I feel like real people rarely are. Despite that, she is still always looking out for everyone around her.

She's both adorable and relatable and PBY is killing it. Even without the superhuman strength element I can totally see why any guy would fall for her.

That said, I do see why the over-the-top comic book style humor might not work for some people. I personally love it, but it does require some suspension of disbelief. And I think Jisoo is doing fine as the literal 'straight, normal' guy in contrast to every other character's crazy. I wish he were more of a scene-stealer, but I guess that's not his job.

Same here. PBY is DBS, really. So far her aegyo is not something I'd call forced or awkward. It just fits perfectly. I know the plot hasn't moved that much but I think they're laying out the foundation and everything will just connect in the future episodes.

I actually forgot the part where DBS saved AMH in the first episode till someone mentioned it. And that painting that leads to his secret dungeon is DBS.

Rebel:

Careful strategic planning with no magic solutions and wins for our good guys? Love that! A Hero and the Villain who don't necessarily know about each others existence and that they'll be mortal enemies? Like I said, no rush.

Introverted Boss:

Cute Valentine date shenanigans and smooth necklace neckings.

Yi Soo and Woo il? I just don't gerrit!!

Queen In Hyun's Man:

What is this amnesia? I can't wait for him to get back. I just love that our hero is so competent and very adaptable without the show going all out to mention that he's a geeeenius! He's intelligent and swoony without even having to try. Its no wonder she keeps calling him a player. How can such crackling, dizzying chemistry be kept apart for too long? Pls, do and come back o!

Ninja Assassin ( the movie):

My first introduction to rain. Its been awhile since I watched this movie. My last exposure to Rain was Full House which I bailed faster than ever. So much screaming, the tragic fashion was tragic and everything was beyond dated. It killed my blossoming crush on him. But almost a year later, I went back and found it surprisingly tolerable( told y'all I'm much more forgiving of shows AS LONG as I've started watching them. I'll try to do that for YAB, maybe SH:G or even Fashion Ki-...erm let's not get carried away).
So back to Ninja Assassin. I rewatched it and I reminded of why I fell for him the first time. I thought he was a mediocre actor because of Full House: shouting sash but I'm glad to be proven wrong ( for now). His English was quite good too( granted he kept his voice very low, channeling his inner Batman) but it wasn't devoid of emotion and didn't sound like a computer manual reading. For a role that required more physical exertion than emotional one, other than a few grunts and intense stares, he was quite emotive. I thought that he had chemistry with Naomi Harris and I'm glad the film's now cult status, yay. Now I just need to find a site dedicated to the movie where we can gush and nerd out about it.

IHYV: another hero gone away. Pls come back too with more swoony lines and kisses, okay. Good!

I've watched Rain in another Hollywood movie, i was changing channels few months ago an i saw Bruce Willis and an Asian man who looks like Rain I kept staring at the man because I suspect him to be Rain the movie was tragic but I kept watching to see Rain I waited until his character was killed then switched the channel he looked fine in that movie, I googled the movie it's name was The Prince.

I also came across that movie while channel surfing. It was very cringe Worthy and after Rains char died....I don't even know what happened. His English was also much weaker and the director didn't have the sensitiveness that NA had( can you believe that?), granted, it was a gangster movie but, Come On!! So much posing.

javabeans is yet again perfectly articulating my feelings about tomorrow with you- I'm enjoying the thriller aspect of it much more than the romance which is surprising since I'm a romance lover. But apart from the strange romance, I really also just love Song Ma Rin so much and just want to watch for her really.

I'm still tuning in to TOMORROW WITH YOU because I want to see what happens and how. And what the heck Doo-shik's deal is. I'm beginning to think the moral of the story is "Fools butt in where angels fear to tread."

Earlier today, I finished watching MISAENG after starting it about 10 days ago, and it was terrific from first to last. It had me engaged from the get-go even as it catapulted me back into my own painfully clueless greenhorn days. TMY doesn't grab me that way. It's (mostly) fun to watch, but it doesn't grab my heart and soul. And at times it has irritated the heck out of me, what with Obnoxious Stage Mom's abusiveness, and various other characters' manipulation and sins of omission.

It just hit me that this song encapsulates the feels that I wish TWY could elicit in me:

SO FAR AWAY - Carole King (Lyrics on screen)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22a_syQKSU0

Or maybe her "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow." But what I'm actually getting is closer to "It's Too Late" by the same artist. (All of them from the "Tapestry" LP.)

I also just finished Misaeng, nice since we started together as well, Pakalana Pikake ?? That show was more emotionally engaging for me than almost anything else I've watched other than (the best) sageuk. I wanted to step in and knock sense into those managers so many times, and hug the newbies and tell them it will get better, and fix it for them, and ... all of that. Thank god for my nerves that there was a good ending. I'm grateful to WishfulToki and MM who made me finally watch it.

Pakalana Pikake, I have been thinking about you and realize I haven't answered from a while ago. RL has taken some big twists in the last two weeks and I'm hardly watching or posting at all, sorry about that and thanks.

*waves to bbstl, WishfulToki, and MM*

bbstl: No sweat. Real Life(TM) is supposed to take precedence. I'm glad we could reconnect here now. Just replied to your note in Beans of Wisdom. I've been wondering how your MISAENG viewing has been going, too, but didn't post on the Open Thread this week. As you might surmise, this week's VOICE really rang my chimes, and triggered a lot of posting in the recaps. A while earlier, it was REBEL that prompted an emotional data dump. Kdrama as Rorschach test. LOL.

Chingus: I'm so glad I watched MISAENG. It was a matter of timing. Just needed a breather in my live-watching schedule. It has become one of my top Kdramas. I never expected a show about fledgling office workers to be so engaging, but it is. It really hit me when I realized that Geu-Rae was a long-term temporary worker. I worked as a long-term "temp" myself for about 10 years, by preference.

As I watched, I was reminded of The Screwtape Letters by C. S. Lewis, written as a series of letters from a Senior Demon to his Junior Tempter nephew, who work in the "Lowerarchy" of Hell. There have been times in my own working life when I felt as if I were trapped in an infernal bureaucracy, and MISAENG does a terrific job of conveying that particular form of Hell.

-Tomorrow with You: It frustrated me how almost every characters thought that witholding information was the right thing to do. Let me tell you, it's not!

-Strong Woman Do Bong-soon: I like the fact that I can left logic on the door and just enjoyed the comedy, the chemistry, the zippy banter, and the quirky characters.

-What's with this family (26/53): One absolute great thing about long eps drama was how organic all relationships developed there. Whether it's about romance, bromance, friendship, or family ties. It's always a delight whether we get a surprising pairing (hello, my new fav stepbros Tae-ju & Eun-ho), or a new revelation of an established one (the 3 Cha siblings fast becoming my fav relationship nowadays).

Strong Woman - I thought I'd like this drama way more than I do.. I love Min Hyuk, but to be honest I sometimes find the female lead annoying. Her anger at Min Hyuk seems unnecessary a lot of the time, especially when she isn't exactly lovely herself, and she isn't really doing much to investigate Min Hyuk's stalker or the kidnapped girls (so far at least, only watched til ep 4).

I also really hate the mix of horror and comedy. How am I expected to find any of the scenes funny when I'm still terrified for the kidnapped girls? It literally cross cuts from something horrifying and tragic to something we're supposed to find adorable. It makes me feel so frustrated that all this time the characters are having cute banter while there is literally a serial murderer/kidnapper/psycho is ruining peoples' lives.

I agree with you. And at the risk of repeating myself, I'll say it again on this page: I don't find Do Bong Soon to be a strong women, at least not mentally and emotionally. She's not the kind of strong that represents the 'strong woman' that we admire.

*minor spoiler*
She's quite silly actually, and Min Hyuk is often correcting her mistakes (not just English, but stuff like informing Gook Du about the kidnapper). I was even more annoyed when we she went to work skipping about Gook Du, and just wouldn't do the studying she's been assigned, right in front of her boss (not that he hired her for work anyway).

I love romcoms but this show has everything that puts me off - it lives in its own little bubble with no relation to the real world. This formula works for many people, but doesn't for me. I may be logging out soon.

I love Park Bo Young so much so I cannot dislike her character in this drama. I will wait until she becomes better to re-pick up this again.

This show is for her character, I hope she will not get wasted. For a female centric drama, I cannot help to think the writer purposely made her and Ji Soo's character are quite unlikeable to make PHS's character outshine everyone else. ? LOL. (ok kidding)

I actually have a very low benchmark for comedies.

In SWDBS, I don't really care(although these could certainly be improved)
- that Bong Soon isn't perfect or strong in character.
- about the jarring mix of horror and comedy
- there isn't much plot
- there is nothing meaningful
I just want good laughs and I find myself having to plod through an hour just to get one or two.

I really wanted this to be good. I'm the type who hopes to find a crack in every drama I start.

I put Introverted Boss on hold after episode 11... seems like I might wait until the show finishes to watch it all in one go, skipping the makjang parts.

Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People: My only minor quibble is that I don't know the history of this period well, so would never have known that already a few years have passed since Yeonsangun became king... I'm thankful for the knowledgeable beanies who explain the history in the comments section, but the show could help me a bit more here. Otherwise, it's all great. These two episodes were more about politics, but as I saw it from Gil Hyun's perspective it was fascinating.

Chief Kim: All I want is for Chief Kim and Yul to have a petty cat fight and then make up by exchanging snacks. I would love to see that drama Laica is imagining, with Chairman's son as the loser employee who falls for his super competent boss. Is there any drama like that out there already?

It's alright. Rebel deserves to be in bold :D

I was surprised to see the number of comments dropped drastically for Rebel this week. So few on DB team are watching this. The ratings are also down. Most seem to want the plot to move faster, for Nok Su and Gil Dong or Ga Ryung and Gil Dong to get together and for Amogae Avengers to have their showdown with the villains.

However, I am just very happy with the show as it is. While I found Nok Su and Gil Dong interesting and Ga Ryung-Gil Dong's dynamics totally cute, I am not impatient for romance. Maybe that's the problem. Romance seems to be the crack factor for most kdrama viewers. By this token, Nirvana In Fire would fare dismally.

The show is taking time showing each character and development at first on Amogae and Gil Dong, then Nok Su and this week, the King and Gil Hyun. I feel like I am savoring a delicacy layer by layer.

it's on the ultimate plot but it feels like it has a very good presence with minimal interaction

What’s the show that’s been keeping you coming back for more?

For me, it's definitely Tomorrow With You. I keep thinking the theory, how it will end, and what I'll do when it really ends ?.

I can see why many viewers prefer fast pace, or prefer the mystery part more. Tbh, if I weren't so drawn into the romance from the beginning, I probably would put TWY on hold until it reached the last episode (so I can skip some uninteresting scenes for me ), which was what I did to TK2 and some other previous dramas with less mystery- more romance. However, this time ( after I had been in a drama slump for a looong time), I am totally so into TWY. It isn't perfect, but my focus is on the characters, so everything else doesn't matter that much. It too happened to me while W-Two Worlds was airing, but I wasn't as passionate as I am now with TWY.

I fully agree with you in TWY. Its not a great and perfect drama but the characters really pulled me in to stay. What will happen to them? Will they be able to change their future? Is it doom or happiness? What is father-in-law really deal is? I'm scared but at the same time excited to know what will happen to them making me want to know the future but as we all know, not knowing the future is for the best. Leave the tomorrow problem for tomorrow except all the assignments that are deadline tomorrow.

For students like me: avoid cramming

"And I love how much Park Hyung-shik is into the heroine; I don’t exactly know why"- Javabeans

Min Hyuk's idol is that superhuman girl who saved his and everyone's life on that bus-mom/daughter accident. Heck, he even had a huge portrait of her at the door of his safe haven! Not to mention, the main character of where he's getting his big money from is a heroine - he has a big poster of her hanging all over his company.

So I'm not surprised that Min Hyuk is fanboying over and so into Bong Soon. He has finally met a real-life super human girl! Imagine his reaction would be if he finally fits puzzle together that they're the same person. I can't wait for that moment. I feel like Min Hyuk is projecting that girl who saved him in highschool into Bong Soon. He dreamed of being protected by a strong heroine. Now that it has finally happened, he keeps seeing flaws and imperfection to his protector, yet he can't help but be attracted to her more. Did you guys see the little smirk that slipped his face when Bong Soon reassured him that she would protect him at all cost in Ep 5???? This boy is totally swooned by her and sadly she doesn't notice what she's doing to his brain and heart!

Soo hopefully this explains why Min Hyuk is so attracted to her. Cuz that's what he's really into - he built his empire around the heroine who saved his life.

"I find myself rewatching the funny parts over and over. "

hahaha, yeah I think bong soon has this weird comedy that just served that but when you are on the same frequency, it hits all the right notes.

This reminds me of Manhattan Love Story (Jdrama) and many wacky Jdrama that you can see definitely see why it probably doesn't work cause many people comes to expecting rom-com but their strongest point is the comedy and the exchanged line between the leads.

Oooh, shout out for a mere mention of Manhattan Love Story! That whole series was super weird (probably when you put the narative from a person who making his own assumption on every scenarios, just like normal people did) but the dialogues with some meta thrown in made me stick to it till the end. Similar to SWDBS, I do find it left me cold at the end of every episodes but that doesn't make me disappointed and I'm STILL eagerly wait for next Friday to come. I think TMY viewer is decreasing because it feels repetitive and has no solution,
am I the only one who think that the drama is a drag?
like a long time drag?
kind of like goblin main story minus the cute gong yoo+lee dong wook? (which is exactly why they are popular)

so imo, drama needs to always insert bromance bickering to be popular since the demographic will be akin to love a good friendship more than a good romance

example : DOTS, Goblin, Kill Me Heal Me, chief kim (come on so yeol and chied kim is kind of friendship), Rebel, Do Bong Soon (they all friends),

also how moon Lovers got big internationally,

Tomorrow with You is the only thing that I watch right now because school is just too much lately. I understand how some people comment the show being draggy and repetitive. But idk, personally I still enjoy the show so much, since SMA and LJH has this really convincing chemistry. At this point I pretty much give up working on the theory and just enjoy the ride since I can't imagine the tight execution for the ending that will satisfy everyone in the next 4 eps so, yeah. Finger cross and hope for the best (Lee Je Hoon promised good heartwarming romance so hope they actually happened. I really think he should revise his definition of rom-com asap tho).

Idk if this counts or not but I plan to watch A Quiet Dream (Han Ye Ri) this Sunday yay. Shout out for Fab who plans to watch it as well (I can't see you on latest OT so I replied in last week's OT hope you still open them). Wish I can make it on time to Amsterdam haha.

I don't find it the conflict is repetitive though, their repeat fight is all from different case. In fact, I love when they are fighting bcause It's just feel their bond start getting stronger when after they fight because they discover something new to make their relationship work. It's just different from all romance I've watched from romantic comedy. It's just feel deeper? It's kind feel draggy because there are times their sweet moment are kind off fluff.

I continue to watch and thoroughly enjoy the visually pleasing and tonally (mostly) sedate Joseon whodunit, SAIMDANG. It comes as a nice switch from the graphically violent and viscerally distressing VOICE, which I'm enjoying for other reasons (i.e., Jang Hyuk kicking butt). There's more than one mystery in this show, and I love how they are emerging. It will be fun to see how they translate to the present timeline.

SAIMDANG finally returned to the present day after an extended dalliance in the Joseon era. Am glad to see Yang Se-Jong back as the resourceful art historian (who admittedly got doctoral candidate Ji-Yoon in deep kimchi with her obnoxious mentor). This role is refreshingly different from that of Dr. Do In-bum in ROMANTIC DOCTOR, TEACHER KIM, which was subtle and inscrutable. The latest wrinkle with Song Seung-Heon as Lee Gyeom's adult 21st-century doppelgaenger was a nice touch. Let the revelations righteous retribution begin.

Having worked in a related industry, I've been enjoying the paper-making scenes. "Water Moon Avalokiteshvarha" has been in the back of my mind all along, and I'm tickled to see its return to the plot. (The real painting was returned to Korea last year.) I like where that part of the plot is headed, if my hunches are correct (and I really think they are). Then there's the crossover this week regarding trees that grow in watery environments: willows in SAIMDANG and alders in VOICE -- via Cheekbones of Doom's reference to Goethe's poem "Der Erlkönig," no less. In yet another crossover, King Joongjong's half-brother and predecessor, King Yeonsangun, is edging ever closer to his own Cliff of Doom in REBEL.

As for the Joseon PTA/PITA president from Hell, in your face, Whieumdang Choi! The Mothers Club comes off as the original Harper Valley PTA. Saimdang's inspired way of saving the day for the lady whose borrowed skirt was ruined was too cool for school. Heh, heh. Boo! Hiss! at Whieumdang's horrible monopolist hubby's cutthroat business dealings. I really like how Lee Gyeom used his connections to make known the Ming emperor's dissatisfaction with what is essentially counterfeit Goryeo paper. Hey, Min Chi-Hyung, the customer is always right!

Hwaiting, Team Saimdang, in both eras!

Now off to see what's cooking with TOMORROW WITH YOU's loopy timeline, and to catch the thrilling conclusion of VOICE. They ought to keep me occupied until REBEL airs on Monday. ;-)

SWDBS: The one I can't stop thinking about for sure. You know when you have a drama slump and despite knowing there are other great dramas airing but it's not the genre you're after or it's tonally different from what you want? That was me before this drama. It's the perfect drama to watch on the weekend, laugh out loud and swoon to. Not to mention I've always liked the leads AND all the supporting cast are adorably quirky like the gangsters, the high school bullies, BS's family/friend and the ahjumma squad.

NJTTW3: I love this bunch so, so much. They're all so much fun and weird. I'm so sad it's ending soon.

1N2D: I still love it but I feel the show lost its groove when Joon Young took a break and they're still trying to find their footing. I just haven't been laughing as much watching it I feel. Hopefully it gets better because it's definitely one of my favourite varieties.

Running Man: On the other hand, Running Man has been getting better week on week. Perhaps the near-cancellation gave everyone a renewed sense of purpose? I especially loved the Haha's Choice episode - it was seriously genius and damn hilarious yet touching.

I was watching Introverted Boss to ep 9 when I spoiled myself reading comments for current week. Now I don't feel so keen to continue.

I am stubbornly insisting on picking up Chief Kim and managed to read recaps to ep 3. I am reading very very slowly and getting distracted. Looking to reach magical number 5 before I dive in.

I am also watching SWDBS very slowly. I keep opening new tabs and switching screens while watching.

I think I am just afraid I lost my sense of humor. I had no qualms dropping shows like Missing Nine so I don't know why I am hung up on comedies.

Goblin in 4 minutes was my savior. It was totally silly, crazy but so hilarious. I seriously needed to laugh and glad a beanie mentioned it.

Is it because I don't game, like at all? I have zero problems watching animations but it comes to CG graphics,it's something else.

I am Chinese and I am actually averse to Chinese saeguks because very often, the sets are an assault to my senses. The opulence, the colors and OTT costumes give me a headache. Nirvana In Fire on the hand was aesthetically pleasing to me. There were colors but they were in natural hues.

You are right about Ten Thousand Miles being beautiful. The sets and costumes are good. I just want the non-CG version. I am still going to try again though.

Okay, I am just weird.

Haha. I am just excited because everything is so fantastical beautiful in Ten Thousand Miles. But I am still at around epi 20. I normally dislike fantasy drama but once in a while I think it will be fun to watch. I will watch this slowly, not something I love it to the max honestly.

I am going to start Voice after it ends. Btw, have you tried Perfect Wife? I think this drama is quite intriguing, so far I like it more than SWDBS.

I should try Perfect Wife. Thanks for mentioning it. I wanted to but the reviews were mostly negative. Trying first 2 eps is very doable though.

Oh really? We are in a very small community in Perfect Wife recap? I think I am more keen to the shows with less viewers in this site like Introverted Boss, Rebel, Perfect Wife and Chief Kim ? Maybe you can read recap first.

Which Taiwan/Chinese/Japanese drama would you recommend?

I used to watch quite a number of TW dramas but not of late.

The last Chinese drama I completed was Snail. I tried Ode to Joy but couldn't finish. What I really need is a good saeguk, even wuxia movie will be great :D

What's Princess Wei Young like? I've seen this drama mentioned in several places. As for General and I, I got stuck at Angelababy.

0

It is kind of similar with Empress Ki. - the female lead started with revenge.

0

@ET - Please please just watch the last 7 minutes of episode 1 of Chief Kim if you want a good laugh!

On Princess Wei Young - it has a bit of cheezy CGI, but otherwise I liked the costumes, especially the delicate embroidery. Colours were brighter than NIF obviously, but didn't overwhelm me. The story was absorbing from first to last. I guess give it a try? You'll know by the end of episode 2.

Snail has muted colours and a documentary feel. I liked it. I don't usually go for thrillers, but I was stuck to the screen because it was so riveting.

I'm only watching Rebel and Chief Kim, so to distract myself in between I picked up Nodame Cantabile. I've seen the Korean version with Joo Won (<3) but didn't like the female lead. The original Japanese is much better in that sense. I find the constant cartoonish hitting and flying hilarious.

Tomorrow with you and Strong woman do bong soon are only two shows I'm watching and hooked to. My shy boss is something I tune into once in a while to see whats happening, despite my lack of emotional connection to anyone but Hwan-ki.

Still on board with the romance and mystery for TWY and loving it. As I mentioned before, no matter how infuriating the main and supporting leads can be, their characters and the changes they've undergone have remained consistent from the start, so I find the show still moves me on the emotional and romantic front.

Strong woman though is my new faaaavorite thing. Laica's comments ring true in that it is definitely not perfect, and the things that drives me crazy is that they're not consistent with how Do bong soon's powers work, how she uses them, and her control over them. However, I've been finding that I can easily (almost involuntarily) overlook these and other problems while watching the show (such as the editing) because the show's highlights please me so. Javabeans is so right in that I am totally taken by how turned on Park hyung-shik is with Do bong-soon. Along with the humourous scenes (which I sometimes rewind and rewatch), Park bo-young's insane cuteness (this is my first time watching her) which should not exist in this world, this show is just my thing. It is so my new obsession of the year.

I love Strong Woman Do Bong-Soon. It's like if the childhood cartoon I never knew I wanted grew up and got made into a drama. She just goes around being awesome and I love that she is using her powers on all the petty jerks. It's going on my list of shows to watch when I just really need to identify with an angry woman winning. Also it just keeps surprising me. The flashback during breakfast? That was the last thing I was expecting and it was wonderful.

I got why viewers drawn to Park Hyun Sik more than Ji soo in SWDBS. Usually male lead is kinda jerk at the beginning (like Ji Soo's role) and second lead is always quite a gentleman, and spend more times with heroine (like PHS's role). So in this drama the roles kind of exchanged ?

My favourite are still Chief Kim, Defendant Rebel and Perfect Wife I hope Introvert Boss will end nicely next week. Need to catch up on Saimdang soon. I decided to put SWDBS on hold for the time being. Will start Voice next week!

That's unfortunate, but I'm not surprised even I didn't think to watch Chief Kim and came across it by accident. I'm glad I did, I haven't come across a drama with such a diverse range of characters (both main and supporting) with substance and purpose lol.

- Defendant = probably the best drama yet of 2017

- Tomorrow with you = i quite enjoy this but not that much. The love quarreling always turn me off

- Voice = ocn always know what they're doing with this type of drama

Variety :

- New Journey To The West = next season is happening, right Na PD? :(((( what jiwonnie said near the ending of ep 9 made me "yeah please dont ever win if that means it'd be the last trip". And if there's a next season, please keep mino. He really fits well with the hyungs. I see mino in a new light because of njttw

- Knowing bros = really enjoy the class segment but please bring back the improvised skits. I miss it so much

- 2D1N = its getting boring, honestly. But i still watch it every week with hopes that the new pd will give us a fun episode and not rely on junho too much

Howdy! I'm watching:

Vivid Romance: I actually JUST finished watching the last ep today. It's a cute and short 6 ep drama. I didn't love it and am glad it's only 6 eps so I managed to finish it. ? The characters were so-so and the plot was loose and 6 eps was more than enough for everything to wrap up. I actually thought it was going to be only 3 eps! I lol-ed at the ending, though! Kinda wanna see a spinoff with his friend, now. Now I wanna see Yoon Shi-yoon in a modern rom-com next!

Queen of Rings: New Kim Seul-gi drama! I think it's part of the Three Color Fantasy series or whatever. It's the 2nd part after Vivid Romance. Instead of taking a life changing pill, a ring turns her into an attractive woman so that her crush can fall in love with her. I'm not diggin' the whole Shallow Hal setup, but it's actually pretty cute and fun so far. I've only watched ep 1, but will def check out ep 2! I'm more interested in this one than I was with Vivid Romance. I'm hoping the guy falls for her true self in the end, of course.

Strong Woman Do Bong-soon: So. Much. Fun! Both Park Bo-young and Park Hyung-shik are so adorable and so much fun together and individually! I'm really interested in finding out more about the masked kidnapper!

Father is Strange: It's okay... it's been awhile since I've watched a family drama, but after ep 2, I realized the title is like that for a reason. Now I wanna know why Father is Strange. Hmm...
On another note, I realized how charming Jung So-min is. Love her short hair! She reminds me of a younger Yoon Eun-hye–during her Coffee Prince days!

Lol, I also finished Vivid Romance last week and found it so-so. Also Kim Seul-Gi's cameo was really random. Have you seen Yoon Shi Yoon in Flower Boy Next Door?

Yeah? It was a drama I checked out with no expectations and I just wanted to finish it to see how Yoon Shi-yoon's character would end up and how he'd change back once the pill wore off... I'm satisfied with the ending, but I didn't expect anything from it.

Kim Seul-gi's cameo was definitely random, but I just thought it was a nice nod to her as her drama was the next series after Vivid Romance.

I HAVE seen Flower Boy Next Door! :) I had the biggest crush on Enrique! I loved him so much as that role, omg. I can check out his other show Me Too, Flower (I think that's what it's called). Have you seen that one?

I think my favorite Park Shin-hye drama is Pinocchio and Flower Boy Next Door is my second favorite of hers, haha. She's really been churning out great works ever since Flower Boy.

Hmm... I'm honestly not that interested in Me Too, Flower because I'm not familiar with the female lead and the storyline, but I'll check it out for Yoon Shi-yoon. Oh, I can also always go back to finishing Mirror of the Witch, too. Heh.

Chief Kim: my weekly dose of happy. I agree with Laica's assessment of why a lot of people are drawn to this drama. One day I have to go on a marathon on watching Dong Ha's (Myung Seok's actor) performances in other dramas.

Tomorrow With You: my weekly dose of "it hurts so good". I'm in love with both the romance and the thriller aspect. I do think after this week's episodes, ahjusshi is going overboard in the mystery department and I'm starting to lose track of the different versions of the future.

Perfect Wife: Didn't think I would end up watching this. Picked it up when I was bored and now I'm waiting for episode 5. What is rich landlady's agenda?!

You're Too Much: I love Uhm Jung Hwa's songs, the musical performances, and the bonding moments between G-na and Ji-na. However, I'm finding the other characters sort of intolerable. Blind guy is hot. The actor is from the same pseudo-boy group as Lee Tae Hwan. So many good looking fellows in 5urprise !

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon: I really wish I could like this drama more. Maybe I'm just not in the right frame of mind? It's got a lot of great ingredients and I love the premise of a petite female character with super strength, but I'm finding that I'm mentally tweaking and rewriting the drama while watching it.

Sorta watching because my mom is watching it...

Introverted Boss: I like a lot of the characters and appreciate the coverage of mental health issues, but I just want it to end now.

Haven't really watched any K-dramas since AoY, but SWDBS got me back on the K-drama train and it's just good, zany fun (even w/ the pretty violent side-stories).

While waiting for the next SWDBS ep, gave TWY a shot (cuz Shin Mina) and the 1st ep just interesting enough for me to keep going and I'm so glad I did.

The writer for TWY is doing an amazing job - one of the best depictions of a newlywed couple (one that really doesn't know each other too well) and how a relationship develops over time with all its ups and downs (the conflicts btwn the couple are laid out really well and totally makes sense as opposed to many dramas where the conflict is manufactured) - hence, really disagree w/ JB about the effectiveness of the romance).

And while not a romcom, the humor in TWY is really well done (so much better than in so many so-called romcoms).

Just too bad TWY is struggling in the ratings, but not surprised as the whole time travel stuff is a lot more complicated (in a good way) than the typical K-drama which involves time travel and requires more thinking.

Taking a bit of a break with current dramas, I'm waiting for Voice and TWY to end so I can marathon it. I'm thinking of watching Drinking Solo while I wait cos it's been on my list for so long. I did start on Chief Kim, looks promising but nothing that's hooked me yet.

I'm watching more Variety (and waiting impatiently for Mudo to resume). Thank God we have TVN cos I can catch all of Na PD's shows! They're gonna air Signal too, so am gonna watch it again! ^^

NEW JOURNEY TO THE WEST - I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it funnier than previous ones. The group dynamic seems better, and I was more suprised by Min Ho. I love him as the singer but loved him more watching him here. I have also always found Su Geun the funniest since 1N2D. More seasons to come please!I've even taken to re-watching old eps of the original 1N2D

LOVE BIRDS - Na PD really is a genius. The show is quite slow like a documentary style even but still interesting. Not my fave of Na's shows but it was still good and made me wonder how Na can make heartwarming stories from seemingly out of nowhere. Loved the editing in the scene where Jae Hyun came back from his work after 2 days and it suddenly cut to him running as fast as he can to the house, complete with the "Need You Now" bg song - that gave me the feels! You can def see that JH is more enamored with KHS and seeing her happy is enough to make him happy.

SWEETHEART IN YOUR EAR - Anyone else watching this? It's where stars are paired with an anonymous sweetheart and they spend the whole day talking on the phone. It's in its 2nd season but I suddenly got hooked. Caught bits of Season 1 and loved some of the pairings that had good chemistry. I'm surprised they got some really big stars esp S2 cos they have Choi Ji Woo and Lee Jun Ki's will be coming soon. I've watched some pairs who get really enamored (for real) and want to meet up. And there's one where their convos were so cute I wanted them to go out in real life. lol

I'm with odilettante and tiney beanie on strong woman Do Bong Soon. I tried watching, hoping it will stick, but it just wont. i like both PBY and Ji Soo in their past projects, though i do have a bit of reservation about Park Hyun Shik. I can't really pinpoint where it's wrong for me, but the overall feel is just not there. maybe i'll try and watch the latest eps, see if anything change.

Here to say I'm right there with some of you on SWBDS! I want so badly to be in love with this drama, but the reality is, it is a bit of a letdown. :\ I love weird, off-kilter shows that deviate off the typical drama style. However... it's not really that well executed here. Maybe my expectations were too high, and now I'm experiencing the all-too-common effect that girlfriday often mentions when dramas seem like they will be amazing, but then ultimately fall short of expectations.

I love PBY and PHS together, I think they make for a really interesting pair. At this point though, I'm not sure who she's even going to end up with and I don't like that because Gook Du's character is.... eh. His personality is grating in a bad way and I don't really get what Bong Soon sees in him, but I guess she's got really thick rose-colored glasses on.

As for the main leads, there's just so much potential, but sometimes what they say and do to each other is just confusing and frankly, boring (um, maybe except for all the little things MH does, but maybe I'm just biased because I actually like his character oop). There's not really much of a romantic spark there for me yet and BS's emotional side seems pretty shallow (there was a little something in the scene where she got drunk at the club), but other than that her character is just a lot of grimacing pouty faces at Minhyuk whenever he does anything.

It's such a waste of PBY. I love how she can pull off being cute, but at the same time she can also act with emotional depth. (I just finished watching "Oh My Ghostess" recently. Amazing.) Unfortunately, none of that shines here as her character is kind of an annoying airhead but with a weird layer of righteousness on top. I love female leads that don't turn out to be what you expect, but here I just don't like BS much yet or connect to her well. Such a shame because the idea of her character is fucking awesome and I just really want to love her and believe in what she believes in. Also, Bong soon's background isn't as gripping as Minhyuk's either, and I find myself the most drawn to his story. (I don't really care for Gook Du's story or anything else much at all at this point).

I'm going to keep watching though, because I still have a little bit of hope that maybe it will get better and get some character development in there. They have so many great elements here: attractive/talented actors that we love to watch, decent special effects, a REALLY INTERESTING premise, a surprisingly chilling mystery, but somehow all of these together churns out a weird bumpy storyline that doesn't make me feel much of anything at all expect for confusion: "why did they do that????"

Forgot to mention though: despite all my complaints and criticisms, this drama is still entertaining! It makes me laugh out loud, and I appreciate the humor. That's worth a lot in my book! (though sometimes they are DTM with the sound effects... okay, okay I'm done complaining I swear :p)

SWDBS: some beanies find our lead gal a little irritating. Ok I must admit that she's kinda overact in her cute ways. Maybe if she time down a little it would be good. I actually like our lead guy more. He is lonely (with his mum passing away at a young age and that kind of dysfunctional chaebol family) but he have to act strong and happy on the surface n act a little nasty n like spoilt brat to our lead gal (whinning over little stuff n asking her to cook for him) when he is actually crushing on her now.

Rebel - I'm having timeline issues as well but I'm gonna sit back and trust that it will make better sense as the plot unfolds. Having no historical background at all, I'm thankful for the discussion and sidenotes at the recap thread for filling me in. I hope for ratings to improve this week though.

Perfect Wife - I was initially hesitant to pick this up coz I usually stay away from adultery-themed anything. Heh. But there's a certain charm to Jae-bok/Go So Young that I find myself rooting for Jae-bok to overcome all the crap that's been heaped on her. Jae-bok/Bong-gu banters are cute and I'm loving the tight friendship of the ahjumma musketeers. No to her wimpy husband and to creepy stepford wife.

SWDBS - It's an easy watching kind of drama. I checked this out for Jisoo (having seen him in Page Turner) but ended up charmed by Park Hyung Shik. Such a breakout role for him. While I'm enjoying watching MH/BS scenes, the crushing on Dokgu(yaah) and Bongsoon's family, I am not as enamored so far with the narrative and how the strong DBS somehow appears paler in comparison to the lead guy.

Missing 9 - It had such a promising start. Aaaand i won't even go there and just end it that. Haha! My takeaway for this show is discovering Lee Sun Bin. This girl just needs to be in a good drama soon.

I shall wait for Voice and Defendant to finish before I start. Meanwhile, currently revisiting old dramas of Honey Lee to feed this fangirl. :D

REBEL- I suggest that for needing the timeline to read the comment section from the latest recap. What they did from episode 1 is start it from year 1505 and back tracked from there how each men came to being as well as their followers. Gil Dong's/Gil Hyun's childhood, the influence of Amogae on the sons; the rise of Amogae; the fall of Amogae the transition from Amogae to Gil Dong as leader; the king's childhood the impact of the deposed queen on the country which includes Amogae, the king; the Jo's who were Amogae's former owners namely the wife.

The reign of the new King started in 1494, which coincide with the fall of Amogae and Gil Dong's family, the change in both men in terms of character growth and personalities is seen over that time but is not time highlighted. Right now its the rise of the tyrant king in 1498 with the purge and its impact on the royal court and the nation. This is also applicable to the minor characters journeys as well. Gil Hyun who has been the loyal/good son to now a loyalist of the crown in the end he returns to his family. Nok Soo who was Gil Dong's first love to the king's confidante. Ga Ryung who started as Gil Dong's friend to his woman and an important player in the fight.

I really love this show and its my addiction right now everything about it is interesting.

CHIEF KIM - Like its quirkiness, fun and serious elements

LOVE IS A DROP BY DROP - Its the only daily I am watching that continues to hold my interest and never stops to fascinate me.

Very few people comment on dailies here what daily are you watching?
