Yoo Seung-ho sings a lullaby for his castmate

If you want to hear Yoo Seung-ho’s singing voice, you might want to tune in to Episode 12 of God of Study. The star of the hit KBS drama, who plays hot-tempered Baek-hyun, sings a trot song (“땡벌”) for his classmate and friend Pul-ip (Go Ah-sung) in today’s (Tuesday) episode.

In the drama, the kids go away to a mountain locale for yet another of the rigorous “Sparta-like” training sessions for their special university entry class, led by their teacher (Kim Su-ro). Pul-ip always listens to that particular song before going to sleep (and Baek-hyun has teased her about her old-fashioned taste in music before), but because of the retreat, she’s unable to hear it tonight and has trouble falling asleep. So Baek-hyun sings the song for her, giving the upbeat trot tune a ballad spin.

I’m way behind on God of Study (plot… sooo… slow…) but these two kids are my favorites, so I’ll be tuning in for this moment.

The Woman Who Still Wants To Marry: Episode 4

Cute and funny as usual, but also, now the plot really gets going.

Usually when dramas have many main characters, I find a few I like and tune out the ones that are boring/annoying/useless. This drama is managing to balance its main characters well and show us aspects to everyone that are relatable. I don’t think the men are as well-balanced as the women (Lee Pil-mo’s character needs more time to develop, or less dismissive acting) but the main two (Kim Bum, Choi Chul-ho) are very cute, both together and in their respective stories.

Jung Il-woo’s theatrical debut earns enthusiastic response

Jung Il-woo’s theater debut project, the play Beautiful Sunday, looks poised for success a week into its run: its first show performed to a full house and Jung has earned praise for his lead role.

The play opened on February 4, and a source with the theater production company said, “This is Jung Il-woo’s first theater role so I can’t say we weren’t nervous, but even we’re surprised that the performances sold out. The first show wasn’t just at full capacity, it sold 107% of the seats.” (A portion of the audience had to sit off to the side to watch.)

Beautiful Sunday is a play by Japanese playwright Nakatani Mayumi, and attracted some buzz prior to its opening because Jung’s character is gay. After showing improved acting and dedication in last year’s drama series Return of Iljimae, this role has Jung “upgrading” his acting one step further as the character of Jun-seok, who is HIV-positive but described as “bright and innocent.” Unlike many screen actors who try stage acting, Jung is not double-cast (meaning that two performers alternate shows, which eases the load on the actors) and will act in all the performances — there are six per week, with two each on Saturdays and Sundays.

Jung said after his first show, “Unlike in dramas or movies, on the stage I can communicate directly with the audience as I act, which is novel and exciting. I’m still lacking in a lot of areas, but I’ll work even harder.”

Seo Ji-hye drops golf drama

Just a few days after the main cast was announced, lead actress Seo Ji-hye has dropped out of the golfing drama Birdie Buddy [버디버디] (which I had mistaken for Buddy Buddy; the series is based on the manhwa Buddy).

According to production company Group Eight, Seo had agreed to play the role of talented golfer Min Hae-ryung and they proceeded to the final negotiation stages, but differences arose on both sides and she decided against the role after all. After the rest of the cast — led by Lee Yong-woo, UEE — participate in the drama’s production press conference on the 10th, the production will begin looking for a replacement.

Well, this makes my decision easier — without Seo Ji-hye, this drama isn’t much of a draw for me. I’m okay with UEE — she wasn’t bad in You’re Beautiful, although she wasn’t particularly great, either — but I shudder to think of Lee Yong-woo leading a drama with such limited experience and bland acting. It’s probably a smart thing for Seo to leave while she can and not be weighed down by Lee Yong-woo. (That may sound harsh — and I will always amend if he proves me wrong — but have you seen Style? Eek.)
