Kim Yoo-jung and Ji Chang-wook set up shop in new teaser for Convenience Store Saet-byul

A new video teaser has been released for SBS’s upcoming rom-com Convenience Store Saet-byul, featuring lead actors Ji Chang-wook (Melting Me Softly) and Kim Yoo-jung (Clean With Passion for Now).

The story takes place at a 24-hour convenience store where Ji Chang-wook plays dorky store manager Choi Dae-hyun. Kim Yoo-jung is the new quirky part-time worker, Jung Saet-byul.

The teaser starts with a montage of a Ji Chang-wook falling asleep at work. He scrambles awake when the door chimes ring, signalling a customer, and wipes the drool off his face as a dolled-up Kim Yoo-jung walks up to the counter. He asks in confusion, “Same team?” and Kim smiles in response. Intercutting text screens introduce the drama’s director, PD Lee Myung-woo, who directed The Fiery Priest.

Cut to Ji Chang-wook complaining about Kim Yoo-jung, but he trips before he can finish the sentence: “Trying to mooch off my convenience store, I see. Why I oughta…” We see Kim throwing cash up into the air and having fun at the counter, and she asks, “Are you suspicious of me?” Ji continues to watch her at work and when he follows her outside, he receives a swift kick to the face. Additional text screens read, “Romantic Comedy” and “24 hours of non-stop comedy.”

The teaser comes to a  close with Ji Chang-wook and Kim Yoo-jung facing-off and posturing at each other while the captions explain the drama premieres in June. And we get a brief glimpse of supporting actor Eum Moon-seok (The Fiery Priest) who says: “We’re almost there, just wait a little longer.”

Written by Sohn Geun-joo and directed by PD Lee Myung-woo (The Fiery Priest, Whisper), Convenience Store Saet-byul premieres June 12 and will be airing Fridays and Saturdays on SBS.

LOL, no. What's with KYJ getting paired to much older men? This is not the first or second time... In fact, whats the deal with all those old-older men being paired with MUCH younger girls/women? (currently Shin Ha Kyun w/PSM...)

The fact is, it is quite hard to find a male lead of similar age as KYJ while enjoying the same level of popularity that she has.... sometimes the chemistry between the leads still works despite the age difference, eg. Find Me In Your Memory.

Korean dramas seldom repeatly cast the same lead pairs; Lee Jae-wook is an upcoming star but still his popularity is not up there yet. I am not sure Ji Chang-wook is the right pick either; it may work or it may not.... will not jump into conclusions too early until the first round of reviews by others.

On the other hand...Lee Jae Wook is always(?) cast along side older leading ladies because he's popular and he's also so young. Just saying 😅

2

I won't judge this drama before it airs too. It might work or might not work. I'll comment after I watch, if I do. Heh.

Also...I never watched a JCW drama. I don't recall watching any KYJ drama as a lead either.

2

@katakwasabi hmmm lemme check:
LJW has been in a vast sum total of 4 shows thus far, one of which he had no romantic interest, two of which his romantic interest actress was only 2 years his senior- which to me is still within the same age range, aka similar age, and not really applicable to the kind of age differences discussed herein (hilariously though in one they were teenagers and one coming on 30 in story canon), but anyway thus only making one drama wherein his romantic interest actress was more than 10 years older than him.
In his new drama, she's still older but not as much so... 3:2?

3

@sicarius I dunno why, but I feel that he's going to get paired with more older ladies in the future. He's a good actor with a mature look to him. He can easily transition into older roles because of his looks. Plus viewers aren't tied to a child image of him because he entered the industry at around 20yo and his 1st successful role was with an actress 10 yo than him (and he played a 30yo character). I won't be surprised if this trend continues. Because despite his young age, he can act along side older partners and he doesn't look out of place.

0

@sicarius LJW had a love story in Search : WWW and Lee Da He was born in 1985 and him in 1998 ==> 13 years. His character was 30 years old when he was 21 years old.

JCW born in 1987 and KJY in 1999 ==> 12 years

1

@kurama yes I know, I mentioned his role in WWW above.

2

Its not always a bad thing to pair younger actress with older actor...It worked for Yoona and Lee Boem Soo in Prime Minister and I, then Moon Ga Young and Kim Dong Wook in Find Me In Your Memory, Uee and Lee Seo Jin in Marriage Contract...We also Had Witche's romance, I Can Hear Your Voice, Secret Love Affair.....it can work provided its done tastefully......the source material is so disturbing here that it had already put me off when I first saw it, even if they completely threw all of that away, visually these two look so mismatched.....KYJ looks like a school kid and JCW, I can't believe this guy was in Healer, looks like a perverted bum....Its off putting....I hope to god it doesn't turn out to be bad

Haha...I like that he seems like a perverted bum to you. I've always thought that JCW is too good looking for his own sake. So it's good if people can see him other than cool, sauve, handsome...just anything positive. Shows his range. ;)

I'm impressed if that is what they are aiming for....perverted bum....I have a bad feeling that they are aiming for a lovable bum and it looking low key cringe, I sincerely hope that I am wrong though. The problem is also Yoo Jung, she is very youthful looking, she looks 15 at best, this will come in handy later on but this is basically why she gets saddled with playing these same roles over and over again. I can see the girl is trying to transition to more adult roles...her beauty too is doing a little bit of disservice to her.

I was honestly worried about drama bc of the source material but I’m actually pretty excited now lol I noticed a lot of people bringing up MMS when discussing this drama but nothing will EVER be as bad as that lmao. It’s also a different writer and the pd directed the fiery priest so I’m sure it’ll be entertaining. Anyways hopefully this is a better project for both JCW and KYJ.

The characters in the webtoon have a 13 year age gap and they are basically the same age as the actors playing them (20 and 33). The source material is very problematic hence the mostly negative reaction here. Tho I’m sure they’ll change it up for the drama.

Interesting the webtoon writer gave a statement on his Instagram that they gonna divide from the webtoon story, and he is not writing the script. Also the PD for the drama have said that the drama gonna be a lighthearted story and they wanted to bring warmth and laughter to us watcher. :) well I am not gonna judge the drama before after watching the episodes and give them the benefit of the doubt. At least they know that people are worried about bringen the webtoon story into the drama.

Yeah I still maintain that would've been a better drama.

But generally, for some including me, age gap is nothing! Once I fell in love with a man who was ten years older than me n asked him out! Dated for a year n it was one of the happiest years of my life!
I hope they give us many funny scenes cuz I need that the most!

And I agree, I need a sweet and funny rom com to relax during this quarantine. I believe in Chang Wook and I'm hoping for the best.

It depends on what people are complaining about. If it's something that's not clear beforehand then yes judging too soon is not good. Like when people laughed at the premise of Crash Landing (I didn't) but it turned out to be not so bad and most of the people who said that ended up liking it. But something like age gap that won't change once the drama starts, it would still be there. So should people judge the story already? I guess not. But can people worry about the fact that it's based on such a webtoon or that the age gap exists? Makes sense sorry.

why do we have to sacrifice enjoyment by being reminded of such a major flaw? it may be able to be overlooked for some but judging by the source material which is such a misogynist male-gaze fantastical piece of garbage and the fact that this man is so much older than her (I WOULDNT EVEN DATE HIM and we are "only" 8 yrs apart) like why should we go through it? if it proves to be something good then good for them. goblin is supposedly great but that was just too much and it majorly affected the way i enjoyed it...

I agree with you. It's fine to put across our concerns...but we can choose how to do it. Sure we can do so more respectfully, considering the amount of work everyone is putting into a production especially during such a hard time? I feel like dissing is just too much. Some people are trying to make themselves look edgy by dissing behind a screen...IDK.

I personally think Healer and Empress Ki was up there in terms of quality. Suspicious Partner and K2 were lower in quality. But I enjoyed all of them. In fact, I enjoyed the latter 2 more because of the pace. MMS was a huge mess I agree. But didn't the writer had credentials of writing winning dramas (at least in terms of ratings)? So he didn't choose wisely...well, IDK. But what are the criteria that are important to him when he chooses his projects? IDK too.

I see what people mean about the age-gap, but I think we can separate two arguments:
*Why do dramas have to constantly cast MLs that are over 10 years older than FLs?
* Is the age-gap another element that adds to the power imbalance in the OTP?

The first argument is about a trend in dramas. It's general, it's been like this forever and a lot of people said intelligent things about it.
The second argument is about this drama in particular. It's still not airing, so nobody knows. But the kick to Ji Changwook's face suggests that the age-gap doesn't imply power imbalance.

Guys, I don't understand the negativity towards this drama already. Isn't it common to see this age gap in dramas? Or movies and Tv shows in general? In Clean With Passion For Now, Kim Yoo-Jung was paired to Yoon Kyun-Sang who is also 13 years older than her. Still they were a great couple and the drama worked out nicely! I think we should complain about chemistry when the drama airs. It's just unfair to say this doesn't seem like a good drama based on a small teaser. Let's wait and see :)

But why would it be a problem? Yes, she's young. But she's an adult. She's a very mature young woman and she clearly doesn't have a problem with that. I think that age gaps, in real life, are not a problem as long as it is consensual and as long as we are talking about adults that know what they're doing, which means they're mature enough to make decisions. But, well, it's just my opinion. I understand that you might think in a different way. I just hope it's a good drama that we can all enjoy! :)

The problem lies that women are not allow to get old and for actress is no different, the older the actress gets, the more difficult it is for her to get a role.
Maggie Gyllenhaal once said that she was refused a role at 37 because she was too old for her romantic partner who was 55.
Hollywood does this all the time, older men still get the lead but with younger women as a co-star.
If the age difference is not adress in the story, if is not a conflict or something, there is no reason to cast a 12-year-old difference between the actors other than pure sexism.

And look the difference, Noona romance the age gap is always mention, always in discution and always posing as an obstacle to be overcome.

4
1

Required fields are marked *

I totally agree with you! When it comes to value older women, I see the problem. They should be able to get more parts regardless of their age. It should always be about talent. But I did not see people here saying: "oh, it's sad they keep choosing younger girls to do characters that older women are just as capable of doing". What I saw here was people saying they have a problem with age gaps in general, which is different. So, what I was saying is that regarding age gaps in relationships, I don't see a problem. :)

Idk.. but I love how intelligent these people are who knows how bad a drama would be just by watching a mare 30sec teaser....like WOW!! It's not even a full trailer..
And as for the source material which is the talk of the town I just want to know how many of you actually read the actual webtoon? Or if u read then how many pages? Two?three?forty?.. I know this webtoon objectified a female character but trust me there's more to this story and by looking at this teaser I can tell they r not sexualised KYJ's character.. plz let's give it a chance and u will get plenty of opportunities to bash the drama if it is that bad after it airs..
Annnnddd.. ohhh!! The main concern.. THE AGE GAP.. I didn't want to say it but my mom and dad has10 years age gap.. does that make my father a parverted bum? I hope not.. and in my opinion JCW and KYJ r looking just fine.. if someone wants to stick to there previous opinion of the uncle and niece thing that's okay but atleast admit that they are not looking as bad as u people thought they would.. phew!!

Let me clarify that I'm speaking in general terms. I know nothing about the source material here; it's about the general tendency.

I understand all the feelings people have towards this pairing, but the thing is both Kim Yoo-jung and Kim So-hyun (and other young actresses too) are at this awkward stage when they are too old to continue playing high schoolers, and yet they still look young, so acting alongside older actors sometimes seems a little off (even though they are both 21 already). Personally I think that as long as the actress is okay with it, it shouldn't be made into a huge issue. I remember everybody was making a big deal out of KYJ's pairing with Yoon Kyun-sang back in the day, and as much as I didn't like the drama (and the power dynamics between their characters), she was super comfortable with him, and at the end of the day I think that's the most important. It's a weird transiton time for the younger actresses, but if they are ready for more mature and serious roles, then I'm cool with it.

I think the teaser seems fun and interesting. I love both JCW and KYJ so I can’t wait for their upcoming drama. The webtoon is popular because it has beautiful art and good story, but it has some raunchy materials that’s not suitable for all ages to read. There are many changes from the original storyline, but I’m sure they revise it to be better and suit to show on family TV screen. Please try not to have prejudice about age gap, source material because everything can be beyond your expectations! I remember there had been a lot of controversies for drama Empress Ki in the beginning before it was aired, but the drama turned out to be a very successful drama. The age gap between Ha Ji Won and Ji Chang Wook is 9 years old, and they had such a good chemistry. Just wait and see how it will be. It seems like Backstreet Rookie is a promising drama to me. The main leads look so visually compatible and beautiful. I couldn’t expect more than that! In my memory, KYJ is just like a child, but she’s grown up so fine. JCW is handsome and looks younger than his age too. Nobody can predict a drama’s ratings because it does not always depend on the quality of a project but also on luck, so we’ll see...

JCW isn't great at comedy but he isn't bad either. However, I wish that he would do an intense romance *his eyes* whenever he looks at FLs. And by intense I don't mean selling it on his kissing ability, because that is just lame.

Excited for this because I love both leads!

Honestly, some of you with the age gap drama. My parents have even a larger age gap, so what are some of you trying to imply? Huge age gaps do exist in real life.

I Shall Pass. JCW looks like a Perv
Kim Yoo Jung trying so hard to be an adult. sorry but you look like a 15 year old to me
if the rating of this drama is higher than TKEM, i will conclude that SK people have no taste at all. such a disgusting drama
