Jung So-min, Kim Ji-suk showcase their homes in Monthly Magazine Home

New promos have been released for JTBC’s upcoming Monthly Magazine Home (formerly Monthly House), including characters posters and a new video teaser.

Described as a romance between a woman who likes to live in homes and a man who likes to buy homes, the drama explores the complexity of what “home” means for different people and how its definition is further complicated by the social and economic challenges that surround home ownership.

In the lead role, Jung So-min (Soul Repairer) plays everyday woman Na Young-won. As a magazine editor, she’s been in corporate employment for 10 years and counting. Home is her oasis and the place where she can truly be herself. The love and care put into her home décor is evident in everything from her wallpaper to her duvet covers. The style reflects her warm personality and quaint charm. This attitude towards her home is also displayed in the tagline on her character poster, “I don’t own my home, but I like being at home.”

In contrast, Kim Ji-suk (My Unfamiliar Family)’s character magazine CEO Yoo Ja-sung has a more practical perspective. He admits on his poster that, “I like homes because homes become money.” A self-made man of wealth, he worked himself to the grind to get to where he is now and always felt that investing in properties was the best way to succeed. As such, he had devoted himself to school during the day and worked multiple part-time jobs to save money: serving tables in the evenings, working as a driver at night, and doing construction work on weekends.

Jung Geon-joo (Oh My Baby) takes on a third view, though, in the role of photographer Shin Kyum. His poster reveals that, “I have the money, but I won’t buy a home.” This decision comes from his life philosophy, which is to do what he wants and to enjoy his life. As a YOLO advocate, home is simply where he is residing today and his current setup at his studio is cluttered with equipment for his hobbies and interests such as camping.

Continuing with the theme of homes, the newly released teaser gives a closer look at Jung So-min and Kim Ji-suk, as well as where and how their characters live. In a sequence of shots, it starts with Jung decorating her roof-top home and enjoying her time there. The accompanying captions are read by her in voice-over, “Why does it matter if it’s a rented property? Even if it’s not a home that I bought, it is still a place that I can fill completely with my own memories. I present to you the home that I want to live in.”

Cut to Kim Ji-suk, who we see in next sequence featuring his home. Similarly, he narrates the text that appears on the screen, “Your salary cannot keep up with the rising costs of renting a home. The correct solution is to buy a home. You have to develop an eye for recognizing a good home. I present to you the home that you have to buy.”

The teaser comes to a close with Jung So-min sitting with Kim Ji-suk on a couch. They introduce the drama together, “The woman who lives at home and the man who buys homes in a romance about having my own home. Monthly Magazine Home premieres its first episode on Wednesday, June 16 at 9pm.”

Written by Myung Soo-hyun (You Who Forgot Poetry, Drinking Solo) and directed by Lee Chang-min (Woohoo Waikiki 1, 2), JTBC’s next Wednesday-Thursday drama Monthly Magazine Home premieres next month on June 16.

I love Jung So-min and I hope this works. I will try it but somehow I have a sense of hesitation, though not quite skepticism. The writer has done some good things and the PD is definitely competent. Definitely worth a shot anyway.

I also feel that hesitation that it may just be boring and nothing substantial but we'll see.

Can’t wait to see Jung Somin back onscreen & returning to her au naturale comedic chops! Though the actual plot line doesn’t intrigue me, hopefully it’ll at least be good enough to erase the mess of “Soul Mechanic/Fix You” from my memory! (Please be good, Show! I’m counting on you to give me some good laughs over the summer!)

My Unfamiliar Family was one of my favourite 2020 drama and I dropped Soul Repairer after 2 episodes because of the plot.

So I count on Kim Ji-Suk to choose good dramas! (20th Century, Camelia, My Unfamiliar Family, etc.).

I hope the writer won't be influenced by the fans and stick to the original story this time!

I'm so torn! I love both Jung So-min and Kim Ji-suk but writer Myung Soo-hyun is on my "Never Watch Anything By Her Ever Again" list because of Reasons.

Oh, come on. The writer of "a poem a day" cannot be that bad, unless you were in Min ho's line and you were upset with the ending???
Uppssss, sorry for the spoiler🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈

That actually makes me think that maybe I should love this writer because I'm still looking back at that Beanie time with deep fondness

7

But I can't decide whether that was due to the drama or more our collective Beanie creativity.

8

I'm not sure that had anything to do with the drama itself (although I did enjoy it). APAD was somehow the perfect show at the perfect time for the site. It's also one of the few shipping wars where things didn't get toxic.

I had a feeling Minhoyoung crew would show up to express their eternal bitterness against this writer🤣

I'm just going to sip Duct Tape and maybe watch this show. It's pretty clear from the posters who the male lead is this time, so I wouldn't worry.

If Kim Ji-seok turns out not to be the ML the writer, director and PD-nim are gonna gonna be in trouble, said M.

4

*Shakes fist at the sky* It was clear in the APAD promos too.

I promise to watch it if Jang Dong Yoon is brought in at the last minute as the third male lead, wins the FL's heart and they live happily ever after.

But now I'm imagining the writer throwing Kim Ji Suk under the bus to increase flagging ratings, and bringing in Jang Dong Yoon as a third male lead somewhere around ep 8.

You're making my head explode!

I think we were going for, like, episode 15

I agree with @leetennant, ep. 8 is far too soon.

You can't throw KJS under the bus! 😭

Ah going down memory lane. Min-Bo-Young liner here. Poor Min-ho done in by writers-nim and PD Han in A POEM A DAY (2018).
Anyway (especially after poor Jang Dong-yoon’s JOSEON EXORCIST experience) I think it would be nice to bring back my favorite poem/video from APAD. JDY’s narration of “Lily Magnolia” by Do Jong Hwan in episode 14:

After the catatonic disaster that is Oh! Master, I need the other half of my beloved BTLIOF couple to succeed. Kim Ji-seok is a long-time favourite as well. Drama gods, please let this be good.

Not going to lie the plot sounds blah, but then neither Drinking Solo or APAD could be described as exciting, and I really liked them both. The writer does a good with kind of slice-of-life workplace interaction. Romance though ....

I really like Kim Ji-suk so hoping for the best.

The romance in DRINKIMG SOLO and in A POEM A DAY was my least favorite part of those shows, but it made up for it with memorable characters.

Can't say I will watch this as I'm still bitter about Jung So-min's last home drama. At that time she was homeless and crashed in somebody's sacred 40-year mortgage home.

I like these two. A lot. Both have outstanding comedic timing. I hope it’s funny and heart warming. For all APAD was and wasn’t, it served a lot of great scenes and laughter for me. And the beanie island playlist is still going strong on my commutes to work! I can’t imagine any writer sidelining KJS at the end game. But he’s hilariously cameoing the cheating hubby in Doom right now! I will always have a soft spot for him. I’m okay if this one is slow and deliberate. I just want a simple love story.

I love both the leads...especially Jung So-min, but she’s picked some clunkers. Because This is My First Life is still one of my favourites that I regularily rewatch, but I haven’t really been able to get into any of her other shows (though to be fair, she’s always good in them). Kim Ji-suk on the other hand, seems to have a much better record of picking good shows, both when he is and isn’t the lead.

I also haven’t seen any of the writer’s previous works, so I’m going into this one hopefully optimistic? Or is it optimistically hopeful? Will definitely check this one out.

Unfortunately I feel this show will be very, very, very boring. The set-up itself feels like a story told a thousand times already.
