I'm sort of sad that there's no recap, we-cap or open thread for SBS's Taxi Driver... It's seriously good (and high ratings!)
It's too bad that they changed the writer at Ep.11... It became a little too intense...
Anyway, this year is Lee Je-hoon's year. Taxi Driver and Move to Heaven. He is absolutely killing both roles.
Hope to see him at Baeksang next year.

Yeah totally! He is such a great actor.
But after the writer change at Ep.11 on Taxi Driver, I am not happy about where it's going... It seems like a different drama from Ep.11. I really liked Ep.1 though 10, serious but somewhat light and comical revenge and fun to watch type thing, but now it because so intense as if some new drama started... Ugh.

Korean 2020 drama productions were down 53 percent, but for the most part studio and production profits were up, mostly due to cost cutting (which I assume is talent and staff salaries). It is basic supply and demand. With less productions, the work available to actors. Actors who needed work would take less to be in a production.

But there seems to be a 2021 reversal on budgets. Call it the Netflix effect: it plans to spend $500 million (US) on at least 36 Korean productions.

One reason is that South Korean Netflix subscriptions are nearing 4 million. Another reason is that kdramas have helped drive Netflix to record 2020 profits as a new international market for Korea's unique stories and quality filmmaking stories have found a new and growing audience.

The source of kdramas used to be the big three networks. Recently, cable channels have taken a foothold in making more compelling dramas. I just wonder if Netflix's Western ideas will influence how its new dramas will turn out.

On the last point, I think there’s some “scrubbing out” of Korean culture in newer dramas. It’s subtle, but it’s quite noticeable when you compare the dramas on Netflix with older dramas from 10-15 years ago, which are often unabashedly Korean in their storytelling and cultural setting.

I'm savoring every bit of "BOSSAM" because it might be the only proper sageuk (in a traditional sense) that may have for a while.

7

Required fields are marked *

Yeah. What makes Kdramas unique is not only their format but their cultural aspect. Losing that would make it no different then a story anyone can tell.

5
reply

Required fields are marked *

It's definitely happening in the subbing, too. Kdramas used to leave Korean transliteration in, when it was important to the plot. For example, when a couple goes from calling each other -ssi to -ah or referring to people as sunbae, oppa, or noona. But now, they're all Mr. and Ms., which doesn't appropriately convey relationships.

6
1

Required fields are marked *

Viki is pretty good this way, at least with some dramas. Netflix is the biggest offender in this way, IMO.

7
reply

Required fields are marked *

Curious what part of Korean culture that has been scrub out from the recent drama compared to the classic? I've only started watching kdrama on the last 3-4 years and have not really get around watching drama from past decade.

Required fields are marked *

You should try them. They were intense, and unique, how I miss them

2
reply

Required fields are marked *

It's just little things, I guess. In some recent dramas, for example, I've noticed that characters don't always take their shoes off indoors. Obviously, this is in the interests of PPL for the shoe designer/retailer, but in older dramas, even wealthy characters would take their shoes off and wear house slippers indoors (granted, designer house slippers, but still). Taking your shoes off when you enter a home is the prevailing custom in Korean culture. It's also the norm in many other countries in Asia, but it's not universal, and is not really a thing in the western world (although ironically enough, everyone takes their shoes off in my part of the US, lol).

Required fields are marked *

I think the overall thread gives a good impression of some of the bigger areas. A couple more noticeable changes are the amount of sex (or the implication of sex) and foul language. Dramas used to be much more chaste. Arguably, I would also add the amount of variety has really decreased. In the past, you could guarantee a slice-of-life drama, a Rom-Com, a thriller, and an action drama all going relatively simultaneously and quite frequently. Now, it's all bigger budget action and thrillers with a sprinkling of something else (i.e., Penthouse). 'Heard It Through The Grapevine' is a fantastic Indy drama that I don't know if you'd get now. Admittedly though, this is an issue you see across the global entertainment industry as a whole. Production studios feel hamstringed by budgets and choose to produce what they believe will sale so I'm not sure this concern is unique to Hallyu.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

This is interesting because I feel like some earlier dramas were less chaste (eg My Lovely Sam Soon has a lot of implied sleeping together) then it shifted to frozen fish kisses, and now it’s coming back around again (but much more look-at-how-daring-we-are when they do it)

1

As @beffels notes below, I feel like the opposite is true. Old dramas were less coy about consenting adults having sex, whereas newer dramas (particularly the romance-centered dramas) barely allow characters to express desire and/or urgency.

I think more recent slice-of-life dramas are more honest in this regard, but the marketing of k-drama to more conservative societies in other parts of Asia has more or less put sex and romance in separate boxes.

I'd love to hear more! I'm not sure if I caught any of that. What are some that you noticed?

I can see subtle Westernization in some of the cable dramas. Ironically, in most of the dramas 100% produced by Netflix like Extracurricular, School Nurse Files and Move to Heaven, Netflix seems very hands off, and I would describe them as progressively very Korean.

One US format that is increasing is multiple seasons of a show. In the past, shows had to run 5 seasons in order to get into TV syndication. Today, streaming services are catering to binge viewers.

I have been reading Netflix launched head office in Korea this year to ramping up domestic production there. Just like they have been doing here in Europe as they launching a nordic office later this year. So I belive they want to keep the culture intact leting local people in charge in their region. If anything I think their translator is in the wrong trying to translate in general terms but forgetting that the culture context is getting lost. That is why I prefer VIKI when they get a drama as they explain the culture context.

There was an article on an American news site talking about the sorry state of Asian representation in American series and films. They were using data from 2019 which means they didn't include, Minari, Mulan, The Farewell, Nora From Queens, plus the 2020/21 best director Oscars going to Asians. I also commented that though Netflix Canadian and British content randomly get thrown in when talking about 'American' content, Netflix Asian series gets entirely overlooked. I'm a nobody special random American dude yet my access to 'Asian representation' to watch has never been higher.

There is tons of Asian representation - but you have to actually look for it - it's not gonna come out and bite you. Just a rough count of what is available on Viki, NetFlix, and Amazon I see over 1000 Asian - that is not even counting the Bollywood's.

Also appearing in HMP is the young actor Kim Do-hoon who is currently playing a real bad boy in DARK HOLE. Hopefully he will be playing a good kid in HMP. I plan to check it out.

After a while read some manga - One Piece

Did 319 chapters this week - Luffy was good for a shounen hero but after the battle for Ace - he became too much even for a shounen hero and i feel his plot armour is harming the manga as a whole more than anything else. I'm at 919 Chapter.

I always thought of a being romance viewer or have good interest in this genre(reason - slice of life most probably) but if i do compare the type of media in my top 20 list then romance is nowhere to be seen. Adding asian media, especially korean media obfuscate this real outcome. Open Outcome is my most favoruite - where everything is left for the imagination of viewers.
Among 1000's of media only 2 media ever got 10 from me - real score is 9 - And both have nice slice of life positive outcome but a strong open outcome.

Digesting porn of asian dramas isn't easy.

I found this article from Koreaboo that only controversy involved on this year's Baeksang Arts Awards:
https://www.koreaboo.com/news/petition-jaejae-mmtg-ban-public-broadcast/

MC JaeJae, known for her hit interview talk show, MMTG, has recently fallen into controversy. During the Baeksang Arts Awards festival, JaeJae was seen making a hand gesture while eating a piece of chocolate. Various male community sites had taken offense with this gesture as it is reportedly a gesture of male hate.
As many would know, the South Korean community amongst males is highly sensitive to feminism as it often is misunderstood as male hate. Previously, celebrities such as Red Velvet‘s Irene received criticism for reading a reportedly feminist book. Similarly, Apink‘s Son Naeun was criticized for her phone case which supports feminism.

Regarding the controversial gesture, the producers of MMTG released an official statement. They claim that the team was discussing various outfits and ideas for the red carpet. Amongst the ideas, a clear snack baggie type of pouch was suggested in place of a clutch or a bag. As a comedic MC, JaeJae would then take out a snack from the bag and eat it on the red carpet, as sort of a joke performance.
The process of this decision would be shown through a behind-the-scenes clip to be released on MMTG‘s channel on May 20, 2021. They claim that the action of taking out a snack ended up looking similar to the controversial gesture, resulting in controversy.

Despite this statement, a petition has been submitted to the Blue House to take JaeJae off public broadcasts. This would affect her greatly as JaeJae hosts on SBS, which is a public broadcasting channel.
The petition claims that the gesture she made is a logo of an anti-male site and they claim that JaeJae has been regularly showing support for female rights and creates content that demonstrates so, hence there would be no chance that she was not aware of this.
Currently, the petition is up to 26,000 signatures and counting.

I knew that MC JaeJae will be face charges on weird unusual "unfunny, shameful anti-masculinity", damaging her own careers and warrant a lifetime ban by the Korea media institutions.

I cried my way through Move to Heaven , but my heart is heavy for all the deep past misunderstandings between Sang-gu and Jeong-u and the forever unspoken words they can never have. I do like the way healing for Sang-gu is portrayed. Hopefully, he has escaped the long tentacles of Madame Cage Fight and can work on his relationship and life with Geu-ru. The story of Dad as a firefighter and Mom’s illness, gah - the good they die young! 😞 hurry season 2 (a Netflix K-drama division I really don’t like; just give me 20 eps straight up).
I’ll return to Taxi now; also watching Youth of May, Kingdom Legendary War - which is our singing teams this week. I love the camaraderie and high quality performances from all our idols 😉 . Have a great weekend Beanies!

An update:
So, recovery, like surgery, is harder than I thought. I went back to work on Monday and every day has been some new agony that I thought I had conquered during the days I was off after surgery. I was WRONG, friends, W-R-O-N-G, WRONG. I woke up this morning and my neck couldn't move and my head felt like it had been run over by. My shoulders hurt. Why? I think its so they dont feel left out. My waist and sides and back hurt. My legs hurt. Im a study in pain and discomfort. I dont even like studying, yo. I wanted to call in to work because I felt truly miserable but we've moved our scheduling system to a new platform and I couldnt figure out who was working with me today. Either way it would be short staffed but there's a few people Id be ok leaving to helm the library alone and there's some people I would 100% never leave to run the ship. Besides. Summer Reading starts in like 10 days. I have a million things to do before then.
AND plan Fall--we have to be at least 3 months ahead (although the pandemic did make that a laughable goal) but that IS the goal.
I spoke to my brother last night about my dad. He finally went to the doctors office. He took several tests for his memory and to quote my brother he did one of two ways for all of them (except for math): he failed or he failed horribly. They still dont know what caused those days of hallucinations or delusions. He needs more testing. But his feet and legs are swollen and he has been severely dehydrated. I feel badly. I've been trying my best to help my dad for YEARS and no one took me seriously until this happened. Everyone is listening and jumping to do whatever my brother says and on the one hand--I feel great that my dad is getting the help he needs. But on the other hand if someone--ANYONE would have listened to me YEARS AGO maybe he wouldnt be so bad off now. It makes it hard to want to faun over what an amazing job hes doing like everyone else.
I was then informed that I need to get my dads house packed up. Im scratching my head like I know no one cares that I had surgery and that Im still in the recovery phase and my body is actually in a whole heck of a lot of pain most days but...sure. I'll figure out how to pack his house up so that they can put his stuff in storage. Sure.
And with that being said, I'm going to try to focus on work! Im really dizzy and disoriented and I dont know why but whatever!

Hi beanies. Landing internships is such a confusing affair. I have to maintain resumes on multiple platforms, have one ready with me at all times and the worst part is that I can't really write anything under work experience because I am just starting out. A very sordid affair but I have decided to devote 30 minutes to it each day. There is a lot to be learn in terms of skills but I really want to persevere in this.
In some good news, its muskmelon and mango season here in India and I am all here for it. They are 2 of my favourite fruits. Also nothing compares to Indian mangoes, they're absolute heaven.

I remember in my early resumes when I didn't have much experience I found ways to make any experience I had viable - whether it was through school or volunteer work. Anything where you utilized or learned a skill that can be transferred to the kind of work you are looking at could be good to add on there.

It's tough, but it gets easier with time. I'm going though it myself now and I've been working half my life (or longer) and it's still frustrating sometimes. I hate the idea of selling myself, but at the end of the day that's what you're doing. Sometimes thinking of it as selling a product is easier because you can disassociate a bit. You have the right idea in not overwhelming yourself and working at it a bit every day.

Good luck! You got this.

Redfox, I have no idea of what is going on in your life, but you sound like a pretty young person. If that's the case, trust old me and report the bullies. Tell everybody you know about what they're doing - your parents, teachers, co-students. Just describe what they're doing and call them out for ganging up against you. Most bullies aren't even aware that what they're doing is wrong (well, they are... but they play it down as a joke) until they are confronted with it. If you drag them out in the open, chances are that they'll feel embarrassed and cut it out

I am not young. I did all that exactly. But everyone tells me im crazy. He is just that cunning. He lied to me and he lies to them. Whatever is convenient, thats his "truth". Some people i used to be quite close with say that even i i am telling the truth i probably deserved to be abused since im a "genderless freak" and "pathetic".
I cant even explain. He pretends he is the victim when im the one who almost ended up dead.
No matter who i speak to they take his side.

I'm sorry you're going through that. You know this, but I need to say it: nobody has the right to judge or deny who you are, nobody has the right to abuse another person. I feel like going where you are and give you a big hug. Things will get better. There are people out there who love and support you 💚

Are you underage? Are THEY underage? are there any legal implications in your country for sending someone ******* . Maybe it is qualified as a sexual assault?
Did you research the related articles? If there is something, you can and should threaten them by legal consequences.

Why don't you just block them? A year from now none of those people will mean a damned thing to you.

I think this is where drama scenes such as recording and documenting are useful. I hope you're always safe, Redfox.
