News bites: August 27, 2022

Woo Do-hwan, Bona, Cha Hak-yeon

  • MBC is lining up a new fusion sageuk called Joseon Attorney, headlined by Woo Do-hwan (The King: Eternal Monarch), Bona (Twenty Five Twenty One), and Cha Hak-yeon (Bad and Crazy). Although the journey begins with our hero seeking revenge, the story follows his growth as he learns to become a true (legal) champion and fight for the good of the people. Written by Choi Jin-young with PD Kim Seung-ho and PD Lee Han-hoon co-directing, filming is set to commence once casting has been finalized. [News1]

  • This weekend sadly marks the finale for tvN’s Alchemy of Souls, but never fret because there’s good news! Filming for the upcoming part two is well underway and is scheduled to wrap sometime mid-fall. Our beloved mages should then be back on our screens before the year ends in December. [Star News]

Jeon So-ni, Gu Kyo-hwan, Lee Jung-hyun

  • Netflix is planning a new sci-fi horror called Parasyte: The Gray, with leads Jeon So-ni (Scripting Your Destiny), Gu Kyo-hwan (Monstrous), and Lee Jung-hyun (The Family Is Coming). Based on the acclaimed manga Parasyte by Hitoshi Iwaaki, the story has also been made into two Japanese films as well as an anime series. Teaming up again after Monstrous – along with Gu – the new drama adaptation will be written and directed by Yeon Sang-ho (Hellbound) with Ryu Yong-jae (Money Heist Korea: Joint Economic Area) co-writing. [MBC]
  • It’s been a busy year for Seo Ji-hye (Adamas), who has a third (!) drama lined up for 2022: TV Chosun’s Red Balloon. Co-starring Lee Sung-jae (Show Window: The Queen’s House), Hong Soo-hyun (Police University), and Lee Sang-woo (Uncle), the drama is being planned to broadcast this December. PD Jin Hyung-wook (Born Again) is attached to direct with writing by Moon Young-nam (Revolutionary Sisters). [News]

  • A new poster has come out for TVING’s Yonder, which already has high expectations as film director Lee Joon-ik’s (The Book of Fish) first foray into dramas. Scripts were penned by Kim Jung-hoon and Oh Seung-hyun. Starring Shin Ha-kyun (Unicorn) and Han Ji-min (Our Blues), the sci-fi will be releasing this October on both TVING and Paramount+. [JTBC]
  • New posters have also dropped for Wavve’s upcoming Seasons of Blossoms, which has an ensemble cast including: Seo Ji-hoon (Men Are Men), So Joo-yeon (A Love So Beautiful), Kim Min-kyu (Idol: The Coup), Kang Hye-won (Best Mistake 3), Yoon Hyun-soo (Kill Heel), and Oh Yoo-jin (Bulgasal: Immortal Souls). Directed by PD Wang Hye-ryung with Park Yoon-sung and Kim Ha-nui co-writing, the youth romance launches next month on September 21. [News1]

  • tvN announced their lineup for the black comedy sageuk Umbrella, which stars Kim Hye-soo (Juvenile Justice), Kim Hae-sook (Tomorrow), and Choi Won-young (Golden Spoon). As the heads of the royal court – queen consort, queen dowager, and reigning king respectively – their blessing and curse is four squabbling princes who represent the future of Joseon. Written by Park Ba-ra with directing by PD Kim Hyung-shik (About Time), the drama is slated to air this coming October. [Dispatch]
  • Over on SBS, campus drama Cheer Up released stills from their first script reading, featuring cast members Han Ji-hyun (Penthouse 3), Bae In-hyuk (Why Her?), Kim Hyun-jin (Can You Deliver Time?), Jang Gyu-ri (It’s Okay to Not Be Okay), Lee Eun-saem (All of Us Are Dead), and Yang Dong-geun (Human Disqualification) among others. Premiering October 3 in the Monday-Tuesday slot, production is being led by PD Han Tae-sub (Stove League) and writer Cha Hae-won (VIP). [SBS]

*david attenborough voice: and here we see dramaland's peculiar phenomenon of sticking so tightly to certain concepts and naming conventions, drama fans are starting to think they've entered the twilight zone*

Joseon Attorney- really?? gosh I'd prefer if we just bought back the zombie phase already... or better yet mix the two and make that Zombie Attorney show you're obviously DYING to make, dramaland (the cast is nice though... 👀)

Red Balloon- pick a new colour already to obsess over. I recommend a good, lustrous royal purple.

black comedy sageuk- sounds fun, as long as it actually IS a black comedy sageuk, and doesn't devolve into just another sageuk with no other merit to its name...

Bruh, so much is happening. Alchemy of souls is coming to an end but season 2 (which I am so excited about), sci-fi horror called Parasyte (the best genre ever), and Woo do-hwan in a fusion sageuk 😭

Woo Do-Hwan is back! Joseon Detective, Gunman in Joseon, Poong the Joseon Psychiatrist... they really lack imagination for their sageuk title. But there is no red in the title!

Umbrella is a family sageuk. It will be interesting.

Baek In-Hyuk in a new drama! I hope his role will be better than Why Her role...

‘Filming for the upcoming part two is well underway and is scheduled to wrap sometime mid-fall. Our beloved mages should then be back on our screens before the year ends in December.’ Now I know this is an option, I am wondering why other dramas don’t do this so we don’t have the year long break to forget everything and have to rewatch season one as a refresher. Yumi’s cells did film it and edit and have it good to go but choose to have a massive gap. I don’t get it. If you have an actor heading into military then fine it makes sense but if you know in advance there will be a second season then schedule it so actors can book their other projects and not have to leave characters and then put them back on again months and months later. Surely getting in and out of role like that is an unnecessary stress for them.

I potentially have Seasons of blossoms, Cheer up and Red balloon as dramas to look out for if they are available in my area. Recently hopes have been dashed due to lack of availability so will wait to see. Also will be reviewing posters and trailers for hints of fusion genres that don’t work for me. Hoping autumn/winter season will work out with decent week day dramas.

But most don't know in advance. Both Yumi's Cells and Alchemy of Souls were unique in that they planned another season from the beginning or near beginning but most of the time, it depends on ratings, hence the year long breaks. It's all about money and what makes studios money.

I like Woo Do-hwan and Bona but Joseon Attorney? Sigh. When will it end?

They aren't exactly making me excited for Part 2 with the writing for Part 1.

Sci-fi horror sounds like it could go very wrong, but I like Gu Kyo-hwan.

I like Seo Ji-hye but the writer of Revolutionary Sisters? That writer makes you hate every character and yourself for watching. I sat through both Liver or Die and Revolutionary Sisters but don't think I have another in me, even for Seo JI-hye.

I was looking forward to Yonder for Han Ji-min but didn't realize it was sci-fi or that Paramount+ was getting into the kdrama game.

Umbrella sounds interesting. Royal court + black comedy could really work, but they have to commit to the black comedy.

I alao like Seo Ji Hye and yes the writer’s previous work is nothing but disappointing. I really hope she chose another project instead this one.

Why everything has to be Josean? How about Goryeo Gambler, Swards-woman from Silla or Book-keeper of Baekje ?

The crying over the lack of 3K sageuks is never ending for us all, dw 😭😭😭 I will keep dreaming of the day I see these titles instead though.

Because the Joseon costume wardrobe that the production houses own is the biggest. Non-hanbok garments are rare and difficult (more expensive) to attain. Those rare few that are occasionally made in bigger quantities are, when the show in question had ended, again absorbed (re-sewn) into new hanboks. And let's not even start with the wigs.

Is Seasons of Blossoms an adaptation of the webtoon? Will they adapt all 4 stories or just the first one?

RED BALLOON: After the total train wreck that was REVOLUTIONARY SISTERS I am inclined to shy away from anything written by Noon Young-nam.

JOSEON ATTORNEY? Really?
