News bites: February 25, 2023

  • In more casting news for the webtoon-adaptation Death’s Game, Kim Ji-hoon (Love to Hate You) has been added to the long lineup, but the details about his role have not yet been announced. Starring Seo In-gook (Cafe Minamdang) and Park So-dam (Record of Youth), the fantasy will be broadcasting later this year. [Star News]
    • Jung Ji-so (The Glory) and Yoon Se-ah (Snowdrop) have been cast in a new thriller called Perfect Family. Based on a popular webtoon by the same title, the drama series is planning to release on an international online platform and will have the award-winning Japanese film director Yukisada Isao (River’s Edge) as the talent behind the camera. [Sports Donga]

      Jung Ji-so, Yoon Se-ah

    • Speaking of The Glory cast members, it’s been a busy year already for Shin Ye-eun (The Secret Romantic Guesthouse), who is reviewing an offer for the 1950s period drama Jung-nyun. If she accepts, Shin will be joining Kim Tae-ri (Twenty Five Twenty One) in the webtoon adaptation, which is aiming to start filming in the second half of 2023. [JTBC]
  • Considering the hit ratings of the Penthouse trilogy, it’s no surprise that the makjang duo writer Kim Soon-ok and PD Joo Dong-min are planning a seasons format for their upcoming series on SBS, Escape of the Seven. Starring Eom Ki-joon (Little Women), Hwang Jung-eum (Men Are Men), Lee Joon (Red Heart), and Shin Eun-kyung (Penthouse 3) among a large ensemble cast, filming for the first season is currently underway and the team has been green-lit to proceed with filming for Season 2. Lee Jong-won

  • Lee Jong-won (The Golden Spoon) has been confirmed as the male lead opposite Honey Lee (One the Woman) in MBC’s new sageuk Flower That Blooms at Night. His character is described as having both brains and brawn, but guards himself from getting close to other people due to a fear of losing the people he loves. [MBC]
  • Lee Hyun-wook (Remarriage & Desires) has been added to the cast of The Queen Lives in Seoul (working title), taking on the role of a fashion magazine CEO. Also starring Han Ye-seul (Big Issue), production is still in the planning stages with PD Lee Yong-seok (Doctor Lawyer, Haechi) attached to direct. [YTN]
  • In contrast to the happy photos of Lee Jia (Penthouse 3) and Lee Sang-yoon (One the Woman), the new teaser for tvN’s Pandora takes us straight into the ~drama~ along with co-stars Jang Hee-jin (The Red Sleeve Cuff), Park Ki-woong (The King’s Affection), and Bong Tae-kyu (Penthouse 3). The revenge-thriller will be launching in two weeks on March 11. [Sports Donga (1), (2)]

Kim Ji-hoon in hair full hair. Blows some air.

Yoon Se-ah on an international project 😊🤭

To the makjang duo, please do not recreate another Joo Dan-te in Eom Ki-joon.

Okay! I like those wedding and family shoots in Pandora. This has better remain the kind of stills we'll be getting from now on.

Is it me, but there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of straight forward low key rom coms or a decent slice of life coming out these days, it’s fantasy, thriller, and power games all the way. Where are the Hospital playlist, Would you like a cup of coffee? and Be melodramatic type dramas?

I'm waiting for the new weekender (coming in one month).
Just a shame Kwak Si Yang had to step down. He would be perfect.

I don't know if I can watch another weekender to be honest, as they seem to be on a different level to the shorter ones more like UK Soaps which run for decades and I avoid like the plague as they are too over the top. Apart from Once Again and Mother of mine, I have not been able to follow through past a couple of episodes I was watching one last year Bravo, my life 2022 and made the mistake of trying again with Three brave siblings and regretting it big time.

Yes, weekenders are different 🙂
But when the makjang is minimal (or funny, like the birth secret in Marry Me Now) , I like following the multi generation stories with focus on the family (and food 😁). My favourite one is Five Enough and the daily Be My Dream Family.

I have noticed that straight romcoms get very low ratings in Korea the last few years. There are exceptions, but I’ve been wondering if that is why we keep getting rommurders. Makjang, thriller, revenge and murder seem to do well.

Lee Jong-won opposite Honey Lee in a sageuk is an interesting pairing I wouldn't have guessed would happen.

Does anyone know if the ‘Joseon Lawyer’ will be streamed and preferably in Australia? I celebrated far too early and then it dawned on me that I might not get to see it. Weep, weep and some more weep! As one of my then little nephews used to do, I might throw myself to the ground, block my ears and cry my heart out:).

I am in the US and also experiencing availability angst for MBC’s JOSEON LAWYER. Its first episode is still month away and I have my fingers crossed that it will come to Viki US via Kocowa since MBC is one of the Kocowa big three (KBS, SBS, and MBC). Over the last couple of years however that hasn’t meant a d*mn thing.

Please let Death's Game be good.

Perfect Family night be worth a watch. It's a thriller so I'll definitely watch out for it. Also, please be on Netflix, please be on Netflix, pleasebeonNetflix. Fingers crossed.

Kim Tae-ri in a drama? Heck yeah. Kim Tae-ri in a 1950s period drama? I'm excited. I love old movies, and movies set in the past (1920s-1970s).

Han Ye-seul. It's been a minute.

I feel like dramas tend to forget voluntary social distancing and avoidance comes with anxiety and often compulsive behaviors. and sometimes lots of lying, then guilt for lying.
would like to not just see a "character scared to love" but someone who is messed up and dysfunctional because of it.

im totally not speaking of myself, right?

1. Please please please, let Death’s Game be good. In other news, Kim Ji-hoon’s hair is so sexy. Hope he keeps it for the show.

2. Japanese film directors making kdramas is not a trend I ever expected to happen, but I’m interested to see if they can bring a fresh, new angle to the industry.

3. I for one am glad to see her career skyrocketing; she’s a good actress who has long been held back by mediocre scripts. Her acting alongside Kim Tae-ri sounds incredible.

4. Man, I love the cast (Lee Joon!!), but the Penthouse duo… *sigh*

5. Very odd pair, but I do love me some Honey Lee, and Lee Jong-won isn’t all that bad himself. Hopefully it translates better onscreen because I’m not skipping a Honey Lee sageuk role.

6. I hope he’s not cheating on his wife or girlfriend this time around.

7. Another great cast with an extremely dubious premise. The words “revenge-thriller” does not strike optimism in me.

Kim Ji Hoon looking real fine. More guys with long hair please.

Lee Jong Won & Honey Lee as the main leads? I'm guessing she will have the more prominent role.

Lee Hyun Wook & Han Ye Seul~ Ooh I like these two. Just need the drama to be good though. XD
