You can only pick one: Friends-to-lovers drama

You can only pick one, and boy the pressure is on. The DB team will answer a new prompt in each post, and you’re invited to do the same in the comments. Ready to play?

You can only pick one friends-to-lovers drama

missvictrix: My choice for F2L is definitely an oldie: Bottom of the 9th with 2 Outs. Despite still being mystified by the sports metaphor of its title (all I can comprehend is that it means time is running out), I truly loved this story of two old friends falling in love. It’s been ages since I’ve seen it, but the scene where their hands touch and something ~changes~ will forever be engrained on my mind. The drama is old school for sure — and could probably be remade into something a bit fresher (no, drama gods, that’s not a formal request, please don’t remake this drama) — but that’s half the appeal. Also, I just love Su-ae, and she’s especially great here as a struggling writer. [And I’m totally cheating, but my second pick in this category is the mini drama You Drive Me Crazy.]

mistyisles: I think I’d have to say Answer Me 1988. I honestly would have been happy with whichever guy Deok-sun chose, but by the end I couldn’t imagine it any other way and just enjoyed being along for the ride. There was something really special about the way those two understood each other like few others could, and how taking care of each other seemed to come so naturally.

DaebakGrits: Given my extremely vocal love for Hospital Playlist, it should come as no surprise that I pick the friends-to-lovers romance between Ik-joon and Song-hwa. I like this particular pairing because — not only is it an example of an often underrepresented romance between two people in their early 40s — I appreciate how it reflects the reality of life. Sometimes the right person doesn’t always come at the right time, but missed opportunities do not always lead to regrets. Although Ik-joon and Song-hwa didn’t date when they were younger — despite having reciprocating crushes — the drama doesn’t try to make us feel sad over what could have been. Instead, Ik-joon and Song-hwa find themselves both single twenty years later, and with more life experience — and years of friendship — under their belts, they gradually draw closer to one another. The relationship that they have in the present is all the better because of their years of experience as friends, and it’s entirely different than what they would have had if they’d dated when they were younger.

Unit: I don’t even have to think twice: Lee Ik-joon and Chae Song-hwa from Hospital Playlist! From the 99s to the present day, these two were always meant to be together, and for them it was only a question of when, not why. They already had a great rapport within their extended friendship squad, but for me, it was in their quiet moments that their relationship shined best: sharing a meal together, drinking coffee while watching the rain, being by each other’s side to get her biopsy results in S1 and after his accident in S2… Yes, there was a brief period of awkwardness after he confessed to her, but their friendship was strong enough to overcome it. And what I loved the most about them is that they never stopped being “friends” even after entering the lovers stage. They didn’t need to act differently or make any major adjustments to the status quo. They were already comfortable enough in their existing relationship, that the only thing that changed was the label attached to it. That’s why when it comes to the friends-to-lovers trope, Ik-joon and Song-hwa will always be the standard.

Dramaddictally: While I was writing my K-drama Kisses essay, it got me thinking about the short show Because It’s the First Time, which I remember loving for its cast, its messiness, and its friends-to-lovers trope. Park So-dam is one of my absolute favorites and the center of this drama is her having to choose between Min-ho and Kim Min-jae. (I mean, what a problem to have.) They’re all in a group of life-long besties, now in college, that spend their time hanging out on a rooftop, navigating the troubles of money and love. Not only was I utterly unsure of who the female lead would pick, it’s a double whammy with this trope because she’s pushing the boundaries with both friends the whole time. Of course, by ending up with one of her best friends, she risks losing the other friend in the process. These are the stakes — and it’s good enough for me. I love a simple show about real-ish people that can make a happy ending out of everyday problems. Over-the-top prettiness doesn’t hurt either.

alathe: Hospital Playlist, for certain. It takes a lot to convince me with a friends-to-lovers arc. I’m friends-to-lovers skeptical! I need to be persuaded there’s actually passion there! This is why Song-hwa and Ik-joon took me totally by surprise. I didn’t expect to root for them so hard. At first, I didn’t ship it. If Song-hwa truly wanted to be with Ik-joon, surely it would have happened years ago? But Hospital Playlists answered all my questions beautifully. It truly did capture the feeling of a friendship that started out with confused romantic feelings, settled into easygoing companionship, only to explode into passion as all that old longing was reignited. And the best part? It was awkward. It’s hard to let a longstanding friendship evolve into romance — it feels weird at first! There’s so much at stake! Still, their first kiss felt tentative and tender all at once, in a way that made it utterly believable for me. I think the key was, this show was unbelievably good at establishing the closeness of its four protagonists. It felt only natural for the relationship between Song-hwa and Ik-joon to deepen, because they knew and loved each other down to the core.

But for me, the single most delightful relationship in all of dramaland is a platonic one: Shi-mok and Yeo-jin in FOS.

My Unfamiliar Family!

They didn't see each other for years because of a "fight", but just one meal together and she felt confortable with him enough again and talked to him about her hot night with her boss 😂

I really liked their friendship and their love story.

Thanks @frabbycrabsis, that was a great post. The exact scene with the skirt made me pause too. Had it been in RL, it would’ve definitely been something for a couple to talk about.

My favourites Bottom of the 9th with 2 Outs, My Unfamiliar Family, and Fight My Way have already been mentioned so I'll also plug 20th Century Boy and Girl. Kim Ji-seok was honing his skills in the friends-to-lovers trope with this one. Just so good 💖.

Awww, I loved Bottom of the 9th! The should-we-or-shouldn’t-we was maybe a little more protracted than it needed to be, but the friendship was so real and sweet and funny.

It only occupies a few moments here and there, but the little friends-to-lovers subplot between Kyung-jae (Kang Ha-neul) and So-min (Jung So-min) in the movie Twenty was perfection.

Mostly this topic makes me look back at Love Is for Suckers with renewed furious disappointment about the drama that should have been. 🤬 I love friends-to-lovers stories and I've seen so few in any language or medium that were done well. Kdramas tend to undermine them with the revelation that one party always had a secret crush on the other (or they both did unawares) and then get bogged down in the question of what kept them apart.

Not a kdrama, but Taiwanese drama ‘In Time with you’ is my all time favorite. Li Da Ren and Chen You Quin 💙. They were perfect as friends and their slow burn path to Romance was just beautifully done.

For kdrama it is ‘Bottom of the 9th with 2 Outs’. I absolutely loved this one too.
Unfamiliar family is a close second.

I'm with you on all of the three! Putting Bottom of the 9th first because of the nostalgia and the many rewatches. Soo Ae and Lee Junjin can do no wrong.
I wish Korean ‘In Time with you’ was as good! Even the Chinese one was good despite the lenthy duration.

I didn’t fully get into the Japanese version (2019) even though the leads were good. I didn’t continue after a few episodes. I will probably give it a try again. But it’s hard not to compare with Daren-ge 😇

I couldn't watch much of the Japanese version either, even though I heard it was good because I don't intentionally rewatch dramas and like you the other versions kept popping into my memory.

On my second version there were some deja vu moments but it only clicked that I had watched a similar story because there was one unique scene that they kept in both versions.

I think the Japanese did better everything. They never went to far in the angst and toxic relationships. They adapted really well to Japan and they didn't make 40 episodes for a simple story.

I tried to watch the Japanese version, and I liked the leads but the simpering, calculatingly-childish SFL bothered me so much that I had to drop it pretty early - I knew I would be unable to tolerate her for the long haul and didn't want to get invested in the rest of it. I'd heard such good things about it and really wanted to like it, but that kind of female behavior is my kryptonite and has poisoned more than a few dramas for me.

It's the same character in the TW version but in less toxic for me.

1

That SFL ended it up being very likable! It's the SML that full-on toxic and never recovered.

2

I didn’t see the Taiwanese version but out of the two versions I saw I preferred the Chinese version Evolution of our love over the K drama version.
Unfamiliar family is a great choice too.

I’m wondering if Twenty Five, Twenty One counts? Both acknowledged they had a relationship that was more than a platonic friendship in the beginning, but obviously due to the age gap and their circumstances they didn’t pursue a romantic relationship until later. That said, I constantly wonder if they kept their ‘friendship’ instead. Obviously friendship is still a relationship that requires ongoing work to keep it going, but it does come with less expectations. Would Hee-do & Yi-jin been better off as friends? Could they be? Would they still be in each other’s lives?

I think it counts as Friends to Lovers. Perfectly.
And about the question... I wish they had never fallen in love, just kept being the best of friends. I think they would have kept that friendship through the years.

Hospital Playlist hands down. The scene where Ik-jun came to the hospital to be by Song-hwa's side when she was getting the biopsy results speak volumes. and his "I will fix it no matter what" melts my heart. She said she doesn't need anyone to come but only he saw through her real feelings. Iksong couple forever.

All these people mentioning Hospital Playlist and all I can remember is morning scenes. I'm totally not a morning person but there are lots of serene morning scenes in this series that make me realize I don't hate mornings, I just hate chaotic vibes that surrounds it --let's say with getting ready to work/school, getting jammed in the streets, hurrying to be somewhere on time, and so on. If only I can have mornings as calm as these characters had, I believe I would love morning.

The IJ-SH Hospital Playlist all the way for all the reasons stated by @unit and other Beanies!

Another reason making this relationship a standout for me is our witnessing it over 20+ episodes over two seasons in 18 months (as opposed to a condensed 16-ep piece in 4 months). We viewers are like having grown and walked with them on this long journey and it’s hard not to ship them. The ultimate get-together feels so hard-earned but 110% assured.

This was ridiculously hard to narrow down for me because Reply 1988 has to be on the list BUT Lee Ikjoon is my all time favourite K drama character and his relationship with Chae Songhwa just works. He needed his ex to have the cutest kid in K dramaland but his second wife will be the perfect second mum for Woojoo❤️.
Honourable mentions listed below: Fight for my way, My unfamiliar family, 20th Century boy and a girl, Evolution of our love.

The reason the couples in Hospital Playlist, Reply 1988, Fight for my way Evolution of love stand out is because they addresses the root cause of male second lead syndrome in most dramas; they have consistently proved themselves to be life long companions.

My choice is My unfamiliar family because of its main (young) couple, but as I said before, I love Ik-Joon + Song Hwa (Hospital Playlist) too.

There is a very short kdrama called Timing which I suggest as another "friends to lovers" show very easy and fast to see.

This is one of my favorite subgenres. I love it more than the "enemies to lovers" one (which is fun too).

At the very beginning of the year I watched three short dramas: Happy Loner (really cute), Timing and Vivid Romance (the longer of the three).

I like too watch mini dramas sometimes and this Timing is not a gem but it's really nice and as you said, there is an unforgettable twist at the end.

Better late than never!

The writer killed everyone's hope for a third season with this epilogue...

It sounded so unfair to kill Ji-Won young because she would have became a passionate journalist...

3

I wish they hadn't added that epilogue. Every now and then I calculate how much time left she has and it makes me sad, she is one of my favourite characters ever, and I LOOOVE them together.

3

Unfortunately their romance played out offscreen. And darn that epilogue. We didn't even get to see a proper date! (that kiddie pool outing doesn't count)
