Family: Episodes 1-2 (First Impressions)

A Jang Hyuk + Jang Nara pairing = me diving in headfirst without caution. Amazing lead actors in a family comedy drama with some action on the side? *Grabs popcorn* Because, what can go wrong?

Editor’s note: Continued drama coverage is pending.

EPISODES 1-2
Jang Hyuk in Family: Episodes 1-2

The drama opens with our hero, KWON DO-HOON (Jang Hyuk) in action as a highly skilled black ops agent. He’s a sniper, and he kicks butts too. But life soon kicks him in the butt when he remembers in an “Oops! I did it again” manner that he has forgotten about his wedding anniversary. And this opener does well to establish the dual sides to Do-hoon: a great agent at work, and a not-so-great guy at home.

His wife, KANG YU-RA (Jang Nara) tries to be understanding, but there’s only so much a woman can take. Forgetting her birthdays and missing his daughter KWON MIN-SEO’s (Shin Su-ah) big days is one thing, but forgetting their 10th (!) anniversary and leaving her to go alone on their anniversary trip is a really big deal, and Yura is rightly pissed!

As he has always done throughout their marriage, Do-hoon blames his absence on a certain Manager Oh at work (yunno, since his black ops identity is a secret and everyone thinks he’s just a regular office employee). And while the double life he leads is part of the premise of the show, it strikes me as off-putting because Do-hoon almost never takes responsibility for his many absences. At least, for once, apologize without dragging Manager Oh into it.

Jang Hyuk Jang Nara in Family: Episodes 1-2 Jang Hyuk Jang Nara in Family: Episodes 1-2

Moving on, Do-hoon spends most of the first episode trying to appease Yu-ra, and we get a fun cameo by Cha Tae-hyun as the patisserie who scolds Do-hoon for not paying enough attention to his wife. Do-hoon gets defensive and accidentally ruins the apology cake he bought for Yu-ra (even before leaving the shop!) so, he settles for an apology fried chicken. Only, after ten years of marriage, he still doesn’t know that his wife prefers grilled chicken. Tsk.

Husband of the year, Do-hoon certainly isn’t. Neither is he that much of a father of the year. It’s bad enough that he wants a second kid in the middle of all of this, but it’s even worse that rather than completely smoothing things over, Do-hoon and Yu-ra agree to a temporary truce during her baby-making time of the month. But having another baby won’t make their problems go away. And nobody should go through the stress of pregnancy with a husband that can be called away at any time for a mission. Sure, Yu-ra has got her father-in-law KWON WOONG-SOO (Lee Soon-jae) and brother-in-law KWON JI-HOON (Kim Kang-min) around, but that’s not the same thing.

Jang Hyuk Jang Nara in Family: Episodes 1-2

Day 1 of the truce period coincides with Do-hoon’s mom’s memorial service, and this is where I had my first and only chuckle of the week… because it’s the first memorial I’ve seen with a projected (on the TV) picture of the departed, and not the usual framed picture. Hello, technology! Lol. As usual, Do-hoon is late, no thanks to Manager Oh. And while he hurriedly changes into an appropriate memorial outfit, Yu-ra uses his phone to send a text to Manager Oh (whom none of the family members have ever met in person) requesting her presence at his house. Yikes!

In the middle of the dramatic Kwon family memorial mourning, the doorbell rings. They all expect to see a delivery guy with sister-in-law LEE MI-RIM’s (Yoon Sang-jung) pregnancy cravings. What they don’t expect to see is the beautiful MANAGER OH CHUN-RYUN (Chae Jung-ahn) and I don’t know what shocks them the most: that the infamous Manager Oh is a woman, or that she’s this stunning? Okay, I laughed here, too.

Chae Jung-ahn in Family: Episodes 1-2

Within minutes of being introduced to Manager Oh, we see her badassery as she takes down the delivery guy — who she identified as a gang member — in the elevator, and changes into all-black to suit the memorial mood at home all without breaking a sweat. But she’s sneaky, so she tries to bribe the household with gifts as her way of apologizing for keeping Do-hoon away from home so often. When that doesn’t work, she turns on the tears. But not about to be out-teared in her own house, Yu-ra also turns on the waterworks and Do-hoon just sits in discomfort, torn between his wife (who delivers the mother of all pinches to his thigh) and his boss.

A drinking competition takes over the crying competition, and both women proceed to drink themselves senseless. But when Manager Oh gets to her car after the memorial service is over, she’s as sober as a judge. And at home, Yu-ra doesn’t appear to be completely wasted, either (but I have a bit of a problem with Do-hoon still wanting to make a baby after his wife just drank). Thankfully, Min-seo comes to pass the night with her parents and puts a pause to their plans to give her a sibling. Phew!

Jang Hyuk Jang Nara in Family: Episodes 1-2

But it only gets worse from here because Do-hoon spends most of the second episode whining like a petulant child throwing a supermarket tantrum to get a toy. Or in this case, a second child. Because why is he doing pushups and raising his voice about “doing it” with Yu-ra at Min-seo’s school’s parking lot?!

This is more embarrassing than funny. Why is he rushing her home to make babies after her cafe gets its first-in-a-long-time large group order? (For a Cha Eun-woo fan club lol!) It’s okay for him to keep odd hours at work, but he won’t let her spend an extra few minutes at the cafe to take care of last minute details? Tsk. It’s not like Yu-ra wants to make all that money for herself — she’s planning to book a family trip for Do-hoon’s dad’s 80th birthday. Unfortunately, Manager Oh already went behind her back to gift Dad plane tickets for him and his girlfriend. Yu-ra grits her teeth when she finds out, but she says it’s fine with her.

Mi-rim also cancels the postpartum care Yu-ra arranged for her in favor of Manager Oh’s premium postpartum care center offer — and it’s how the entire family just ditches Yu-ra’s efforts without considering her feelings at all that gets you. They’ve seen firsthand how much she has been through in the marriage thanks to Do-hoon and Manager Oh, yet at the first opportunity they pick Oh over Yu-ra? That’s so disappointing! It doesn’t even help that Yu-ra starts getting suspicious of the nature of Manager Oh’s relationship with Do-hoon.

To kill two birds with one stone, Do-hoon books a hotel room for a sniping assignment and for a baby-making meet and greet with his wife. Yu-ra stews all the way to the hotel after she learns that the Cha Eun-woo fan club order was based on Manager Oh’s recommendation, and she eventually explodes on seeing Manager Oh with her daughter in a school award ceremony picture Min-seo sends to her. To make matters worse, when Yu-ra gets to the hotel, she spots Manager Oh in the elevator — almost a confirmation of her worst nightmare — and this is where we pull the curtains on Family’s first week.

I wanted to like this show more than I did, and for an opener that is meant to capture — and sustain — the viewer’s attention, I couldn’t wait for it to end. The drama has its funny moments, but they just didn’t land for me. I didn’t like any of the characters, and maybe I’m just being overly dramatic, but I don’t think Do-hoon and Yu-ra are ready for another child. Because even if they haven’t realized it yet, their marriage is on the rocks. But then, if it’s not broken there’ll be nothing to fix. And the whole point of the drama is for them to fix their family, right?

Jang Hyuk Jang Nara in Family: Episodes 1-2

My biggest peeve with the drama so far is Min-seo’s “love story.” I’m not that big a fan of coupling kids in dramas, and while some dramas make it as light and fun as possible, this one got on my nerves. Min-seo came off as entitled to her classmate’s feelings, and that whole sequence of chasing him around and calling him up in the middle of the night to demand an answer to her confession was just disconcerting. And talking about getting revenge because a boy turned her down? No! It’s not cute.

If this were to be any other drama, I’d have dropped it like a sack of potatoes, but the synopsis said that Yu-ra is hiding a secret of her own and I’m curious to know what it is. At least, that’s my official excuse for not dropping the drama yet. Unofficially, it’s because I love the Jangs too much to not give them a second chance. You’ve got one more week to make me like you, Show, don’t waste it!

Comedy is not my favorite genre, but this has good tonal shift between the serious part and the comedic part. The over the top comedy is not felt jarring somehow. Every character is interesting, the otp, the kid, the younger brother and his wife, father in law, the kid's friend, even manager Oh (Chae Jung-ah rocks! so cool). I guess I may continue despite bad sub and sometimes they translated it wrong, but this one script isn't too deep & complicated, right?

@Unit, thanks so much for helping us out with this one I don’t think many Beanies will be able to watch this due to the limited region release. Therefore, I don’t think there will be much activity in the comments section other than the serious disappointment with the lack of availability. Like you, I want to know the wife’s secret and I also agree that dramas showing ‘young love’ should focus on the teenage first love category and not in the younger age range.

I tried like heck to just get into the first episode that I gave up on that one. Changed gears and tried the 2nd one a little better, but not by much. I really enjoy the leads in just about anything they do, but for some reason this one did not seem to work. I am one of the very thankful ones that tip my hat to the translators of these dramas, but they were also confusing. Noting the change in music timber, dialogue going by too fast, and even when read not really cohesive? I do not know if I will stick with it or not, really bummed as had hoped for a great show.

It was messy. I was this close to talking about the messy editing, direction and production but I just had to wait.

And maybe it was the translation, the dialogue at some parts was subbed like it was a low budget weekender. It was worse than the third person dialogue we had with a character in Gaus Electronics.

I'm very hesitant to stay on this one though. And I'm glad it's only for 12 episodes. I love Jang², and Chae Jung-ahn a lot so I'll give them another week of doubt. If it doesn't improve, this might be a binge after it's all aired and whenever I have the time.

But, Manager Oh's badassery was delight to watch, I must admit. I had my fun moments, but I was too disappointed by the end of episode 2.

This weecap didn't make me want to watch the drama at all (even if I could find a decently subbed version). It seems like alot would annoy me especially the persistent baby making stuff. I remember last week or so, someone on here had mentioned dramas were subliminal messaging about have babies and getting married. I thought they were joking but this recap made me think of that. Like for what reason is it needed to have another child when you aren't even present for the one you *do* have?

I thought this was gonna be a true lies/mr & mrs smith type thing which appeals to me but now, all I can think is all the things I don't like in kdramas is probably featured in this.

Also was it his 10th time forgetting their anniversary or did he forget it was their 10th anniversary?

I'm delightfully enjoying true lies.

And I think he remembers thier anniversary but someway clocks out late from stakeouts or missions so he misses the anniversary. But for 10 in a row, it raises some eyebrows. Is it that he forgot the anniversary date and as such, accepts stakeouts on the said date only for him to be told the morning of the anniversary that today is thier anniversary. It's not funny for 10 in a row. It's disappointing and a bit irresponsible.

Oh no. I was considering watching this over the weekend. It's not really my genre but I really like the leads. Now the recaps/comments have me rethinking.

An aside, but is Jang Hyuk the last kdrama leading man left with facial hair (and barely at that)? I prefer clean shaven myself. But should I feel schadenfreude that men are suffering from the same beauty standards women face? No, bad feminist, bad feminist. ;-)

I was looking forward to this show as I had seen the male lead in Bloody Heart and his acting was superb. However, I found the show very hard to settle into only watching the first episode so far. The over the top acting when the male lead was portraying the husband was to the point of caricature which I thought detracted overall. I get that they are trying to show the difference between sniper/husband but again I personally think less is more and with an actor who is so capable why go in this direction.
The comedy comes across more cringe than funny.
I find the role of the daughter is somewhat jarring as well, being portrayed as more mature with her dialogue and actions compared to her age and I really have a problem with her story line including a love story, she is a child.
I will wait for a couple more episodes to air (and to check out other beanies reactions) to see if it settles down before picking it back up again.

My heart breaks to say this as I am one of Nara's avid fans and this is one pairing I was ecstatic to see again not only because I watched fated to love you a short time ago but because those two actors are really phenomenal.

However, the drama is chaotic. Be it the wrong subtitles that made me have a hard time understanding what is going on or the plotline. I will give the drama another chance but to me it is a disappointment.

Dropped this show midway of the first episode. It is all over the place and I cannot even understand the subs. The over the top acting, running around half naked and spouting sheer nonsense made me drop it like a hot potato.

I wonder how long it will take for people to realize that the subs they watched it were using machine translation because this drama is region locked by the legal streaming service and it has released the episodes only for K-audience who do not need eng subs. I finally understand the availability angst.

What does region locked mean?
I thought subs, aside from like on kocowa, were due to volunteers

These days volunteers or fan-subs have become very less because the streaming platforms themselves provide translations, so you no longer notice credits being given to fan-subs (buy, you can still see them in old dramas that are available in sites other than legal ones). Plus, subbing requires massive amount of time, so unless someone is paying, I do not see why anyone would want to sub for free.

People in SK can watch this through TvN cable channel or by streaming TVING, but the international broadcast rights is with Disney+ and they have not made it available to the world. I guess there is some contract which says that Disney+ can't air the drama until it completes it run locally and hence, "region locked".

Without official subs, all sites run off each other with bad auto translations.

I use all types of sites (which is how I ended up finding dramahood) when I can't find things on viki or kocowa but I never knew where they came from or how they came about. I was just grateful to the subbers and editors.

Often times things that I see that's said to be on Disney+, my Disney+ doesn't offer it. I really don't know how it works haha
Like Big Mouth ended up on my Hulu but The Golden Spoon is nowhere to be found.
Snowfall (I think that's what it's called) is the only kdrama on my Disney+

I think with most other dramas on the unofficial sites the subs have been passable because they mostly made sense so you could follow the story. This was the worst I have ever seen as you literally had to rewrite it in your head to make it make sense by which time you had missed the next three lines.

I thought I was enjoying the show as I was watching it, but I think it was my love for Jang x Jang that was brainwashing me. Once I turned it off and started thinking about it, I realized that I actually had just watched something incoherent and confusing and that much of the comedy was not that funny. The “love line” for their elementary school daughter made me uncomfortable (I did not think it was cute) as did Jang Hyuk’s character’s overzealous desire to bed his wife. I get that these things were exaggerated for comedic effect, but they weren’t done well.

I also didn’t understand his boss’s motivation for purposefully inserting herself into their family and causing friction. Like, why? What’s the point? Also, what agency do they work for that requires him to assassinate people? How could the family not hear the fight happening outside their door? How can her cafe still be in business making less than $100/day? It doesn’t make sense! Nothing makes sense!!

I’m hoping next week’s episodes start to shape things up better. If not, it’s getting the drop 😩

The lack of official or good Eng subs for this drama is disappointing!! Some of the dialogue/context will be missed.

Do Hoon is not a great guy. The mix of the family scenes and crime/action isn't completely jarring, but I liked him more during his action scenes. Maybe because it's Jang Hyuk or maybe it's because he was subdued during these parts (I feel like I wrote this similar comment about someone else lol).

Manager Oh's elevator fight scene was really good. They showed some different moves well instead of using quick, vague camerawork.

I'm still hanging on. Ultimately, they got a family problem to fix. They haven't hinted at Yura's secret yet too.

I think I may be one of the few people who’s actually enjoying this show!😅

Thank you @unit and fellow beanies because you helped me understand some of the things I could not grasp whilst following the horrible subs. Speaking of which, I didn’t want to be too disparaging of the subs, in case a generous human volunteer was behind them, but it seems like it’s fairly safe to say that they were machine-generated? In which case I can get this off my chest - they were truly atrocious!😔 I don’t think I’ll be able to watch this show without help! It will probably get harder to make sense of the subs as the story develops.

Breaking news!! The version I watch has been updated with manually corrected subs! I’ve just watched the first 10 min or so of the second episode again, and they are sooo much better. THANK YOU to the kind soul(s) for that act of public service! I was just despairing that without weecaps, I’d have to give up, but all hope is not lost! (And I totally understand not weecapping a show that you and most beanies dislike, so no pressure on you, db team!)

I liked the show too. I expected the tone to be over the top so maybe that's why I'm not disappointed or annoyed. I disliked our main guy for everything he keeps missing about his famil bcs of his work, but I guess this is exactly how the drama wants us to feel for now. we're supposed to be on jang nara's character side, especially when the whole family starts to sideline her and accept things from his boss. this drama doesn't know subtly at all, but I think its intentional and that's why I doesn't bother me, idk.

I do think the bad English subs that basically everyone had to deal with made the overall experience of watching these two episodes worse. maybe if we had the usual good quality subs, people wouldn't dislike as much bcs I think a lot of context, jokes with the speed dialogue ends up missing bcs of that. I ended up with headache trying to read and follow the subtitles and I'm considering waiting until this whole thing is fixed, maybe when the drama is available worldwide. its such a weird move from disney+, especially with how popular Korean dramas have been in these streaming platforms globally.

Hello beanies still watching this show👋 I need your help understanding what is happening with the whole spies-killing-people plot-line in eps 3 and 4!😳 (I won’t put any spoilers here but if what I say can be considered spoilers, I’ll remove this comment.🙏)

There are a lot of people being killed and I just can’t seem to follow why, or which organisation the targets are from, and who is on whose side!😅 There was the delivery guy with the tattoo, but now there are also people with scars vaguely in the shape of that tattoo - are they part of the same underworld organisation (in which case, isn’t it a bit weird to have a tattoo that identifies you? Surely you’d want to be incognito, rather than wearing your team jersey around?!)? Or are the people with the scar from some other group of spies/criminals? Or is the scar an indication that you’ve cut ties with the tattoo organisation? As you can tell, I am very confused!😵‍💫 Either way, isn’t having that scar on the neck a bit too obvious?!?

Also, there are probably very good reasons not to share all your intel right away, but it seems that keeping teammates partially in the dark in the middle of an operation is a very bad idea? Anyhow, any help or insights would be greatly appreciated!!

My understanding is the subs improved by the third episode as Disney was airing the show so proper subs were clearly needed. They were so bad that first week it was impossible to follow. If you do jump in to watch it, don't forget there is a drama hangout and I am sure any messages in there will be responded to by the faithful few who stuck it out and made it to the other side 💪🏾
