Jang Hyuk and Jang Nara become Family in tvN’s new comedy

The first script reading stills have dropped for tvN’s new comedy series Family, featuring the main cast led by the iconic re-pairing of Jang Hyuk (Red Heart) and Jang Nara (Sell Your Haunted House).

As the center of our story, the two will be playing the happily married couple Kwon Do-hoon (Jang Hyuk) and Kang Yura (Jang Nara), who have a loving daughter played by Shin Soo-ah.

Although everyone thinks that Do-hoon is a run-of-the-mill corporate employee, he actually works for the government as a secret black ops agent, making it difficult to juggle between his work and home. Still, Yura runs their household like a tight ship and is determined to ensure that they remain a picture perfect family, even if it means concealing secrets of her own.

At work, Do-hoon’s boss is Chae Jung-ahn (King of Pigs) in the role of Oh Chun-ryeon. She enjoys a successful career and the freedom of being single, but she also struggles with loneliness, in addition to the aftermath of her three divorces. Her experiences lead Chun-ryeon to feel sympathetic for our hero and she tries her best to help Do-hoon protect his family.

In supporting roles, the eminent Lee Soon-jae (Behind Every Star) will be playing Do-hoon’s father, while Kim Kang-min’s (The Golden Spoon) character will be Do-hoon’s carefree younger brother, who is married to Yoon Sang-jung (Shooting Stars).

On the production side, scripts were penned by Jung Yoo-sun (That Man, Oh Soo) with directing helmed by PD Jang Jung-do and PD Lee Jung-mok. Notably, this will be Jang Jung-do’s first time as a main PD, but he has a long history of working as an executive producer with recent projects including Alchemy of Souls and Island.

tvN’s Family is currently slated to premiere in April.

I like the way Jang Hyuk keeps switching genres. He carries them all off with a studied panache. The cherry on top will be seeing him with Jang Nara again. "Fated to Love You" was an early favourite long ago, so when I see their names together again, I am "sat".

I know, right? I love to see them act together again. It was magic. I even surprise myself by liking his maniacal laughter. I don’t know why it doesn’t get on my nerves as a similar cackle from anyone else would drive me bonkers.

That laughter was the best part of the character imo. If there's a concept of ugly cute, there can also be the one for annoyingly charming, right?

Still a favourite of mine! Can't wait to see these two back together again. They're always excellent regardless of what they're in so...I'm in.

Woohoo they are back! Haha now officially married with a child! I’m also expecting Jang Nara’s character to also be a spy or maybe an assassin! LOL why am I thinking of Spy Family?! Crossing fingers they’ll also have a telekinetic or mind reading daughter hehe

Jang Nara looks really different in the first pic. And, a random thought. I think Jang Hyuk is probably either a fun parent or a strict one. Nothing in between.

I think you’re onto something about his parenting style. Years ago, I read an interview where he guiltily confessed to leaving the heavy lifting to his wife. He said he’s tired from filming when he’s home, so he tends to let his kids do what they want.

As a husband who has very often felt the same guilt as the actor--and whose excuse for not doing his share of household work is similar to the fictional character being described here, in that I'm apparently a run of the mill college professor, who is secretly a run of the mill college professor--I sure hope the show ends up depicting a happy marriage in spite of the espionage and the husband's preoccupation.

I'm encouraged that its being described as a comedy, but these days that could mean a bittersweet, slice of life black ops melodrama which will reveal that the daughter was in fact the product of the wifes affair with a rival spy and conclude with the sad realization of the main couple they will be happier if they divorce.

@hacja: Let’s hope no serial killers pop up in this. I can cope with your melo predictions though.

I'm in agreement about the comedy comment. I'm amazed at how not funny some of the dramas I've seen listed as comedies. It makes me wonder if South Koreans these days have a drastically different sense of humor than the ones I know/have known in the past.

How can you say no to them together? Plus it's billed as a comedy, thank gods, I'm SO tired of all the deadly serious melos lately!

This sounds promising so I live in hope that as it gets closer to airing they don't suddenly reveal something ridiculous.

I am so excited about this pairing! I'm a fan of both actors separately but LOVED them together in Fated to Love You. And the premise sounds fun. It kind of reminds me of the movie, True Lies.

FATED TO LOVE YOU redux? It has been a long time but these two are together again (but please no maniacal laughter from Jang Hyuk).

I am sure this will be good.

That laugh was the reason I could not stay in the story, it was beyond annoying but I watched to the bitter end unhappily because it had been highly recommended so I wanted to see it through. I had to ff the honeymoon sabotage attempts because it was the most ridiculous element of the story.

aww that laugh... it was irksome for me at the beginning too, but it added to “Gonie's” superficial façade, showing us later that it was covering the many wounds left by his father’s abandonment and genetic illness. His progress arc was painful to watch, but seeing him able to want her to have the best life that she could possibly have, turned the tables for me, and even though the writer used the unpopular '3yrs later trope', it gave us a chance to see him face his future alone, learning to “grow through what you go through”. Which was ultimately what both of them did. So three years was not just believable for me, but necessary. Ok I'm going on and on about "Fated..." but that was one of my early early dramas too, so I'm a big fan. Must re-watch it for the fourth time...while waiting for Jang Hyuk's new one.

So glad that you were able to get through the laughter barrier and see it as part of his initial false cover. I had proper second lead syndrome with this drama but I loved how they resolved his story. I will give this drama the award for the most unique proposal scene ever. Modern dramas barely have wedding scenes let alone decent proposals.

I hope you enjoy the rewatch while waiting. I am not a rewatcher but there are shows I am tempted to risk a rewatch just to experience the joy of loving it even more due to noticing other things.

I've been a fan of JNR since Baby-Faced Beauty, but I'm shocked by how different she looks in these photos (not from age, either, but dare I say different altogether). I'm not sure if this will be a watch for me, but I'm looking forward to the reviews and beanie comments.

Again??? This is already their 3rd work together, right? I heard a rumor before that they're not in good terms in real life. I guess it isn't true then? Lol
