[K-drama Treasure Hunt] Significant scars

Welcome to the K-drama treasure hunt, where we all go looking for K-drama treasure in the form of tiny drama details that we know and love. Sometimes these details take the shape of well-worn tropes (oppa Band-Aiding) or storytelling devices (Top Secret Deadly Allergy), but other times it’s just details we know we’ve seen in other dramas, but need help putting all the clues together.

Each week we’ll put you on the hunt for a piece of K-drama treasure, and you can report your findings in the comments.

There’s no umpire in this game, so if you find the detail we’re looking for, drop the drama title (or even better, drama title + episode number) in the comments, and we’ll all take your word for it. Or, we’ll go binge watch just to see it play out.

And remember, we’re here to map our way to the treasures not to the plot twists! We know how exciting as it can be to have all the hard-earned details stashed in your head, but let’s try to keep the spoilers out of the comments.

This week’s treasure:

Significant scars.

Your mission:

Find and report back on all the visible scars (emotional wounds don’t count, nice try) that our characters are walking around with. Maybe the scar showed up because someone didn’t apply ointment fast enough, but almost certainly it’s serving as a plot device. If you’re thinking of Kiss Sixth Sense, and the scar our future-seeing heroine envisions before our male lead is even injured, then you’ve got the right idea.

Reference drama:

Kiss Sixth Sense (Episode 2)

Are you trying to hurt the HeartBeat Hottest? I don’t think we can get more hurt, but still. Let’s do this!

Woo-hyeol’s neck scar caused by In-hae’s Episode 1 bite. Yes, the girl bit the vampire.

I’ll give you another!

It seems pretty clear to me that the scar on Do-ha’s back in My Little Liar will end up on this list too! We saw it, tantalizingly, this very week (Episodes 5-6).

Extraordinary You : He had a scar in his left hand. It let to differentiate between the lovely Haru-yaa and the bad boy Haru. He got it in a very tragic scene 😥 but thank to this scar, Danoh couldn't help to touch him 😁

The Smile Has Left Your Eyes : both leads have burn scars on their back/arm because they were in the same fire when they were young.

Two things:
1.I always refer to this drama as: (not really) NAKED FIREMAN and
2. Lee Joon-hyuk (1984) (one of my favorites) donated his salary from NF to a SK firefighter’s charity.

Secret Garden: The FL is a stunt double and gets a deep scar. Hyun bin pulling down her sweats sleeve to look at the scar will forever be burnt in my heart!!
Moon Lovers/Scarlet Ryeo - ML has a scar in his face. I believe he wears a mask to hide it. I Didn't finish the drama, but I remember learning that scars were a big deal.
Just between Lovers - I Think Jun Ho has scars.

cdrama Go Ahead - The ML has a large burn scar on his shoulder which he gets when he is staying with his toxic mother. He hides it from him 'family' and eventually they find out. This was quite meaningful.

MLSH:R was pretty much THE "Scars are big deal" drama, I've never seen a show where this issue was more stressed. Btw FL also had one and she's got it purposefully - to escape an unwanted marriage. OTP bonding point? *scratches head*

The ML has a huge scar on the left side of his face. Flashbacks reveal how he got the scar. In Episode 10 he confronts the person who gave him the scar, but things don't go as planned...

Pretty much most of the main characters have either scars or branding. That's one of the themes of the drama too. The main OST is called Stigma.

We do not see much of Jang Uk scar in Alchemy of souls part 2, but it's part of the plot I'd say.

We just started Your honor and Song So Eun (FL) has a big scar on her right arm that is integral part of her history and her motivation to act as she does.

How come Moon lovers and Wang So reason for porting a mask are not mentioned yet ? (ok, that was not my first scar-thought either).

In Train, a scar on a hand is important.

Doctor John has several scars, but not so much all things considered.
Ji Sung has a huge cross-shaped scar on his back in The devil judge.

What about the scars that we do not see, but the knives going into hands ? Would it count ? Happiness, Emperess Ki, Taxi driver, Hello Monster... and more.

I think in TRAIN the hand didn't have a scar, but a very wide black birthmark. But the face had an important scar

True this hand has a wide black mark.
I'm thinking of a more feminine hand, official and more highly ranked. (but I don't want to write a spoiler). This scar is noticed on a commemorative picture at the police station.

I believe there were scars in that SIG/JSM melo I didn't and would NEVER watch...
PRINCESS' MAN - FL takes an arrow for ML and gets a scar and very guilt-ridden future husband in return. Played with - or, rather, kissed with - during their wedding night.
TILL THE END OF THE MOON takes the fetish up to 11 - FL leaves ML with scars when she tries to assassinate him, but poor lovesick fool not only forgives her way too easily, but also wears them proudly as a token of their love and teases the hell out of her about it. *sing-songs* "Cause we're deeper than skin..." (c) Another member of "scar kissing" community. I wonder if this list ended up being TMI of MY own fetishes... hmmm...

Itaewon Class - Park Saeroyi has that huge scar down his forearm. Not going to lie, when Yi-seo starts crying about it, I think that was the first time I actually softened towards her character because I wasn't the biggest fan of her for the most part.

Tomorrow - Ryeon has scars on her wrist from her past life (😭)

Sweet Home - not the main character but Lee Jin-wook's character has burn scars on his face.

Bloodhounds! Evil Loan Shark has a giant facial scar and he gives a matching one to Naive Boxer With A Heart Of Gold (I can’t remember anyone’s names).

Also in You’re All Surrounded, Dae Gu is looking for a man with a scar on his face/ear from when he threw acid on him in the science lab. I can’t remember if he actually has a scar though or if they’re surprised he doesn’t have one.

I'm not sure if it was a plot point, but in It's Okay To Not Be Okay, Kang-tae had scars on his back. I remember from a BTS of the drama, KSH commenting on how surprised he had been to see physical scars of the mental health professionals he shadowed when preparing for the drama. I liked the fact that they honoured this - although they didn't go for realism, just "we have a scarred hero" levels...

I just watched the second episode of The Killing Vote last night and the character played by Lim Ji-yeon has a pretty intense scar behind her left ear that I'm betting is going to be significant. Our mysterious, murdery professor has already noticed her scratching it, which she does absently all the time.

I just finished watching Seven Day Queen, where there are several characters who bear scars of various kinds, beginning with the menacing henchman/assassin—nicknamed “Scarface” in the recaps—played by Heo Sung-Tae. Then there’s the deeply moving scene where Chae-Kyung blows out the candles and explores with her fingers the terrible scars left by Jeok’s near-fatal encounter with Scarface. Lastly, there are the fresh marks on Chae-Kyung’s back where she burned away the tattoo that held the key to the location of the late king’s will directing Yeonsangun to abdicate the throne in favor of his half-brother Jeok. Jeok arrives just in time to prevent Yeonsangun from publicly stripping Chad-Kyung in his frantic search for the tattoo.

IF YOU WISH UPON ME, the ML Gyeo-re has a burn scar

I’m someone who has plenty of scars throughout my body due to a chronic condition. I know South Korean society has high beauty standards, but I’m curious, how are scars perceived generally? Sometimes there is no violent backstory and people could just have chronic illnesses similar to mine. Are scars treated the same way tattoos are?
