[K-drama Treasure Hunt] Heart-fluttery bottle opening

Welcome to the K-drama treasure hunt, where we all go looking for K-drama treasure in the form of tiny drama details that we know and love. Sometimes these details take the shape of well-worn tropes (oppa Band-Aiding) or storytelling devices (Top Secret Deadly Allergy), but other times it’s just details we know we’ve seen in other dramas, but need help putting all the clues together.

Each week we’ll put you on the hunt for a piece of K-drama treasure, and you can report your findings in the comments.

There’s no umpire in this game, so if you find the detail we’re looking for, drop the drama title (or even better, drama title + episode number) in the comments, and we’ll all take your word for it. Or, we’ll go binge watch just to see it play out.

And remember, we’re here to map our way to the treasures not to the plot twists! We know how exciting it can be to have all the hard-earned details stashed in your head, but let’s try to keep the spoilers out of the comments.

This week’s treasure:

Heart-fluttery bottle opening

Your mission:

Find as many scenes as you can where a guy opens a water bottle for a girl and then passes the bottle over to her to drink. This can happen in the most minor of circumstances, but is always an indication of care. (And if you happen to know of a scene where the roles are reversed, we’ll count that as a winner in this round too!)

Reference drama:

Wedding Impossible (Episode 8)

Why do I feel like we've discussed this prompt before 🤔? I'll repeat my answer from then. In I Can Hear Your Voice, Soo-ha is always opening bottles and jars for Hye-sung. Later when he injures his arm, she opens a bottle for him too. I think Eps. 6-7 had these scenes.

One spring night. Jung Haein's character opens the bottle of sober tonic for Han Jimin's character when she's having the hangover, and she says she won't pay as she didn't ask him to do so. In fact, she forgot her purse. He then gives her money for the taxi as well.

character x is at a fair , forgot to carry own money, so whenever is with someone they buy the stuff for x...x is generally very cared for because is very sweet and all.. except when x is with Y (x and y are meant to be end couple and like each other but haven't confessed).. Y refuses to buy and tells him to bring his own money :P :P :P

This is always so silly to me because somehow I am always the one opening bottles for people—including men.

So if any man did this for me I would just roll my eyes.

Why can't everyone just open their own bottles? 😅

Honestly, I can never open my own bottles and always have to ask my husband, so I love this trope. See also: male lead reaching over to grab something that the female lead can't reach because she's too short

Idk if it's relevant, but I remembered a scene in "reply 1988" when it said: "Do you know how Teak shows his attention to girls?"
Taek's father said: " by asking her things and ordering her to do things for him"
And when he was saying this, he asked Sunwoo's mom to do things for him. And everyone started side eyeing them.
I love these tropes too because I can't open most of the bottles. It's like my hand just doesn't have friction 😅

oh yes remember that scene..

but i doubt taek ever asked DS to do things... she was asking him to or doing her own thing..

i don't know about others but 88 is the best amongst both reply and hospital playlist franchises

I’m trying to think of a reversal where the woman opens the bottle but I can’t be sure. WEIGHTLIFTING FAIRY KIM BOK-JOO maybe?? I remember Bok-joo’s coach always carrying with ease whatever her uncle’s having trouble lifting. Also that Bok-joo did the rice bag challenge in place of the ML

AGE OF YOUTH S1&2, there must’ve been a scene where one of the housemates opened a bottle for the other.

Anyway I suck at opening tight bottles and I always used to ask my sister. Once I even FaceTimed her to get help to open a particularly tight can, in my defence the can opener was broken okay 😅

I was also trying to think of a role reversal. I can't say I remember Bok Joo opening a bottle for Joon-Hyung. Maybe?

Coffee Prince: Eun Chan and Han Gyul takes his grandmother out for patbingsoo. Because Eun Chan is worried about her eating cold things (Halmoni has stomach cancer), she runs to the convenience store to get her a hot drink (either barley tea or apple juice). Eun Chan then opens the bottle and proceeds to spoon feed her a sip of hot drink to alternate with bites of the patbingsoo. Her cheerful and caring actions not only wins over the ornery grandmother, but further endears her to Han Gyul as well.

I see this done on press calls too between actors. I can't say there is one drama in particular I remember it done. I will just read other beanies posts here.

Same!! And maybe because I think that it's such a mundane gesture and nothing about it particularly sticks out for me. Another example is when men in dramas open/keep the door open for the women and everyone swoons, but I'm like, "Ehh??" XD

Right! It would stick more if its the FL opening bottles for the beta ML. 😁
About the door, so true. Its common courtesy for someone to do so.

I could be mistaken but I've heard this isn't really a thing in Korea? I know in the States its very common and for any gender to hold the door. I think it was on a culture shock video and in the comments people were all saying if it was common in their country or not.

It could very well be a culture thing, yes! I’ve also heard from friends’ experiences that it’s also not very common in other parts of (South) East Asia (China)—and I quote— “… Because that part of the world is very individualistic focused so the tunnel vision for oneself against another is very prevalent, and the Bystander Effect is even worse than North America”

I love that this one was a gender roles reversal but was also very smoothly inserted as a plot point 😏

Rewatching Hometown Cha cha cha just now, and this scene popped up, so I ran here to post :) - the FLs bestie/assistant has her bottle opened for her by her love interest while they're waiting in a hospital.

This isn't Korean, but A Love So Beautiful Cdrama has a WONDERFUL moment of this. The other girl who likes the ML (she's not technically the SFL though) asks him to open her water bottle for her, which he does. The female lead is sitting, struggling to open hers, and he just reaches down and opens it for her without her having to ask. I rewatch it a lot, not gonna lie.

There is a Korean version of this drama but I'm not sure if that scene is in it? I haven't watched more than the first episode.

The funny scene in Doctor Slump where JW opens a bottle for Ha-nuel who is drunk and is trying to drink through the cap. (And then she tries to hide the bottle in her jacket - this was such a 'no-reason' bit of funny.)
