[K-drama Treasure Hunt] Stuck together in alleyways

Welcome to the K-drama treasure hunt, where we all go looking for K-drama treasure in the form of tiny drama details that we know and love. Sometimes these details take the shape of well-worn tropes (oppa Band-Aiding) or storytelling devices (Top Secret Deadly Allergy), but other times it’s just details we know we’ve seen in other dramas, but need help putting all the clues together.

Each week we’ll put you on the hunt for a piece of K-drama treasure, and you can report your findings in the comments.

There’s no umpire in this game, so if you find the detail we’re looking for, drop the drama title (or even better, drama title + episode number) in the comments, and we’ll all take your word for it. Or, we’ll go binge watch just to see it play out.

And remember, we’re here to map our way to the treasures not to the plot twists! We know how exciting it can be to have all the hard-earned details stashed in your head, but let’s try to keep the spoilers out of the comments.

This week’s treasure:

Stuck together in alleyways

Your mission:

Hunt down all the scenes where at least two characters are trapped together in an alleyway. They don’t necessarily have to be as too-close-for-comfort as those crazy crushing friends in Answer Me 1988, but there must be an alley and they should have a (plausible?) reason not to leave it.

Reference drama:

Answer Me 1988 (Episode 3)

I always seem to load the site when the Treasure Hunts are juuuust posted. 🤔

🎵🎶✨ K-Drama Treasure Hunt 👀🔍…💥🕺 K-Drama Treeeeaaaasure Hunt💎🎁…✨🎶🎵 My favorite time of the week! 💓🙋‍♀️

And because of that I always feel like I can CHEAT.

The scene that sprang to mind isn't an alleyway per se...It's a tiny, narrow escape room!!!

Yes, that's right, I'm thinking of the time that our Skunk gets caught with his Choi Min-woo in a tight squeeze of a room that gets even squeezier as the walls of this "alleyway" close in on them!!!! Boy, do they get to close for comfort!

And, of course, at the end, our Skunk gives us the best dad joke of all 2023 K-dramas. With his face just released from a wall, oh-so-recently endangered, just like in the trash compactor scene in "Star Wars," he says, "What a close wall."

Our Blooming Youth! Our two leads are hiding in an alley pressed up against each other. ML is legit uncomfortable because this adorable man is uncomfortable when it looks like their shadows are touching. FL’s heart is racing but she chalks it up to the adrenaline of their narrow escape. Girl, please.

Dal-ja's Spring! In episode 2, Dal-ja (Chae Rim) and the ML, Tae-bong (Lee Min-ki), take off running to escape seemingly aggressive loan sharks chasing him, and end up pressed together in what has to be the narrowest alley in Seoul. And then it gets spicy. And then it gets spicier. Absurdly cute animal hats are involved in the chase, too.

Interesting timing for this prompt given the real-life drama between those crazy crushing friends in Reply 1988.

WHat's the story?

It's...a lot, but the Cliffs Notes version:
Hyeri (Deok-sun) and Ryu Jun-yeol (Jung-hwan) dated for 8 years and broke up last November.
Four months later, Ryu Jun-yeol is rumored to be dating Han So-hee.
Hyeri posts a caption on Instagram "This is fun."
The internet accuses Han So-hee of being a homewrecker.
Han So-hee claps back on Instagram with a meme of a dog with a knife.
Massive hate ensues.
Han So-hee apologizes.
Hyeri apologizes.
Silence from Ryu Jun-yeol.

The knife dog that she posted is named Kangsoe!

But does a dog with a knife mean anything special?

0

Cutely threatening?
I just thought the Kangsoe article was so wholesome.

Gosh, I don’t follow celebrity gossip but remembered reading someone saying at least he got the girl in real life. They were always shown on the Mydramalist YouTube channel videos of couples who met on set as one of the long term practically married relationship, That type of break up was never going to go well.

My Lovely Liar Do-ha and Sol-hee hide in the alleyway near Do-ha's apartment to get away from the slightly crazy brother disguised as a security cop, who's out for blood.

I just remember vividly at the time everyone being like SQUEE at them getting closer because of 'danger' and then realising how close the are to each other!

No less than two sets of people (and let us agree, one of those is a deep friendship, that can work in side the frame of marriage even if woopie is not on the menu, the other two are just hopelessly falling, falling, falling ... are in an alley hunted by evil thugs out to get the crown prince in an alley.
In another sageuk ... one of them is hunted by [bad person], and is dragged super quick to the side and behind a stall where they have to stay v e r y close, and preferably refrain from breathing. Is it Seon-ho in 100 days my prince, or is it the the ML or SML in The King's Affection? Or ... I just remember the stall, some stuff made of straw (the man's hat? A mat used as wall in the stall? and the intense standing close and being quiet.

I remember this from 100 Days My Prince. It may have been an episode cliffhanger, because I think the little cartoon characters in the bottom corner were in the same situation.

Chicago typewriter the leads escaping from a mass chase by pretending to be a couple. She has just recognised him as someone from her past, she is dressed as a man so takes her hat off, shakes her hair out and kisses him, he is shocked but then takes over the kiss as they both know it is the ONLY time they will be able to kiss.

Does a library aisle count? I rarely get butterflys from the alleyway scenes, but the library scene in Go Back Couple was so so good.

They are hiding to give space to another couple who are making out. Old feelings, the close proximity, and watching the other couple reminds them of a whole other life of living and loving together. You could practically read their every single thought on their faces.

All that we loved: one of the MLs and the FL had to hide in a narrow alleyway in the night. I think they were in the highschool when it was closed and they were running away from a security guard.

Yes a group meet up to drink alcohol on the school grounds, leads to splitting up to escape the security guard.

When I think of an alleyway I immediately think of a serial killer. Nice to know it can be used as a romantic spot tho 😉

Another not-quite-an alley, but similar to an alley: Interest of Love: when the ML and FL hide in the aisle of the storage room, so they are not detected by the other co-worker couple who are speaking. Yoo Yeon Seok and Moon Ga Young show such a full range of emotions here, from amusement about what they are overhearing to then quickly being aware of the attraction between them when they realize how close together they are, especially when she has her hand over his mouth to keep quiet his laughter at the eavesdropped conversation.

This was years and years ago so I'm surprised that I still remember, but in My Husband Got a Family I do believe Kang Min Hyuk's character hiding in an alleyway with his girlfriend to escape detection from his older sister. It was so funny and cute. Then there was an infamous confrontation scene in an alleyway in Forest of Secrets. I watched the behind the scenes reel from that part and Lee Joon Hyuk kept apologizing to Shin Hae Sun after every take for having to be so rough handed.

One of my most favorite kdrama scenes ever. Not in a "I love that scene!", but in a "I love how that scene was made and acted, and the build-up to it, and the aftermath."
