News bites: April 17, 2024

  • A new period crime series called Low Life is in the works for Disney+, lining up Ryu Seung-ryong (Chicken Nugget), Yang Se-jong (Doona), and Im Soo-jung (Melancholia) among many talents in the larger cast. Based on a popular webtoon by the original webtoonist for Misaeng, the story is inspired by the real-life 1970s discovery of a treasure ship along the Sinan coast. Production has Kang Yoon-sung (Big Bet) both writing and directing, with co-writing by Ahn Seung-hwan. [News1]

  • MBC sends their ominous greetings with a first poster for Bittersweet Hell, capturing a photo of our central family whom Kim Hee-sun (Remarriage & Desires) and Lee Hye-young (Big Bet) will fiercely fight to protect. While I fear for Kwon Hae-hyo’s (Wedding Impossible) fate as number one on the list, we’ll soon find out how the black comedy and thriller unfolds on May 24. [MBC]

  • Speaking of MBC, Oh Yeon-soo (Military Prosecutor Doberman) has been added to the cast of The Intimate Traitor, reuniting with Han Seok-kyu (Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3) after MBC’s Son and Daughter about 30 (!) years ago. Also starring Han Ye-ri (One Day Off) and Chae Won-bin (Sweet Home 2), the mystery series is being planned to broadcast later this year. [MBC]
  • Kim Kyung-nam (The One and Only) confirmed casting for SBS’s Connection, playing the chaebol (villain?) in our re-assembled group of high school alums, alongside Ji Sung (Adamas), Jeon Mi-do (Thirty-Nine), and Kwon Yul (Longing for You). The action-suspense is expected to air in 2024, with PD Kim Moon-kyo (Trolley) and writer Lee Hyun (Diary of a Prosecutor) leading production. [SBS]

  • In the meantime, it’s a busy spring for drama bees with KBS’s Treat Me Carelessly also joining the long list of premieres. With a Confucian-trained L (a.k.a. Kim Myung-soo)(Numbers) and the seemingly chaste Lee Yoo-young (Insider), the first poster promises us an unbeatably well-mannered romance. But I expect we’ll be getting some shenanigans when the opposites-attract rom-com begins on May 13. [Newsen]
  • Romance is blossoming on JTBC’s newest poster as well, with Jang Ki-yong (Now We Are Breaking Up) and Chun Woo-hee (Delightfully Deceitful) headlining The Atypical Family. Coming to our screens on May 4, the fantasy series has PD Jo Hyun-tak (Snowdrop, SKY Castle) at the helm with Joo Hwa-mi (Welcome, Marriage Not Dating) penning the scripts. [JTBC]

1. Big Bet wasn't exactly clicking for me. Watching the same brains helm the camera and half helm the script is a lot.
I'll give this the premiere week trial.

2. This one is a look forward to.

3. 30 years. Wow!

🤯 What drama isn’t scheduled to start in May? I might need to take some time off. Or you know, get behind the whole time slip business to maximize watching time.

Wondering, what YEAR ME CARELESSLY is all about. 🤔

And is “Intimate” the new “Impossible”? 😂

I wonder too about it, and will follow L anywhere after Numbers, but what I really adore is that little GAT sitting there on the first syllable of the title on the poster, standing in for the “hat” on the ㅎ. So cute!

Also in double-checking my Hangul, I note that the show has been retitled as Dare to Love Me 🤷

Interesting - “Dare to Love Me” definitely has another ring to it, than “Treat Me Carelessly”. 🤔 Let’s see, how the promotion material will look like, after all… right now, I imagine two very different potential plot lines or main characters.

A GAT! So it’s a time slip drama?! 😆

I couldn’t say for sure, obvs… But I remember from previous promo materials that he is a modern man who sticks to Confusion ideals somewhat strictly. So I have been given to understand that this is a case of the female lead seducing the male lead to give up his prudish ways. 😉

You know, like a gender-swapped Cécile and Valmont in Dangerous Liaisons 😀😃😆😂😅😁😘

lol. Confucian ideals are indeed confusing.

Yay, another split-personality promo campaign. 😂 The ML's character sounds like a complete pain in the ass at the moment - but who knows?

3

Shall we dub the drama, "The Taming of the Pain-in-the-Ass" then, @elinor ?

4

@attiton Eeek, that puts it frighteningly close to being another Butt Show. 😮

It looked to me in the trailer like he's just into historical re-enactments. I don't think it's a time-slip drama. On the other hand, like serial killers in romcoms, we saw a lot of unexpected past life connection angles in dramas last year. So maybe it's that?!

Has anyone heard anything about the upcoming Son Suk-ku x Kim Da-mi drama? I remember seeing it a couple weeks ago. If I remember correctly, he plays a criminal profiler or detective or something like that.

Haven't heard anything about it and part of me wonders if I imagined it 😅

As for the rest of these, sad to say that none appeals to me much.

My consistent reaction to these news bites is that ‘ I still can’t recognize Jang Ki-yong‘ until I read the article above/below the picture.

I, in other hand, still can't believe that's L on that poster... Seriously, I've known the guy for ages both as an actor and idol, plus he's got rather distinctive face - what is this bad photoshop sorcery then?!

That was my first impression. And second. And all the other after that. LYY looks a little off too, but that might just be a hairstyle, she's still recognizable at least.

I'm really looking forward to The Atypical Family and Bittersweet Hell, and curious about Connection and Dare to Love Me/Treat Me Carelessly, the latter because I really enjoyed Kim Myung Soo in Meow the Secret Boy (I know, I know... but I liked it! 😬)

They all sound interesting to me. I guess the question is how to fit them into an already packed viewing schedule. Kind of sounds like mystery type dramas are the new theme for this year.

Anyone know which dramas will be streaming in USA? Disney+ won't unless Hulu **maybe** picks up. So many dramas I'm missing out on lately. (I don't do sci-fi, so that eliminates a number of current dramas).

Viki takes care most of them. So far I haven't missed on any dramas I have wanted to watch. The only one not available so far is Boyhood, which I will need to go to an illegal site like My-Asian-T-V.
