I think Lee Yoon-ki is turning out to be one of my favorite Korean directors.
Every time I finish his movies, I have the same reaction. “WHAT?”
IDK how to articulate it well, but he tells a story such that you can have your own interpretation. It’s almost like… you’re making the movie WITH him!
He has very a distinctive style, and equally distinctive endings. I guess you can call them open-endings, but it’s never frustrating. I always think about his movies days after having watched them. The first time I saw Come Rain, Come shine I had a 2h discussion about its meaning & nuances with my sister 😅
His aesthetics are always breathtaking, and immersive. Reminiscent of Japanese minimalist style (I wasn’t surprised to find that a lot of his scripts are adapted from Japanese literature!)
His filmography is not that long, so I plan to make my way through all of it before this year ends.

Anyways, here are some of my favorite shots from his movie A Man and A Woman(2016) starring Jeon Do-yeon and Gong Yoo. Which is my latest obsession.

This show was one of the first movies I saw with gong yoo in it. It was really good. Sad, though. These two were amazing together.
