Kang Tae-oh debuted with the five-member actor group 5urprise in September 2013. Unlike other idol groups, 5urprise began their career with an acting project before showcasing their music. The group’s first project was the 12-episode web series After School: Lucky or Not. 5urprise then released the single Hey U Come On for the drama’s soundtrack. The group also have three single albums together. In March 2020, the group’s five members parted ways with Fantagio after their contracts with the agency ended.


In 2014, Kang Tae-oh starred in the Vietnamese-Korean collaboration series Forever Young, which won him the Impressive Actor trophy at the VTV Awards. In 2016, he reprised his role in the drama’s second season. In 2017, he joined the main cast of the MBC family drama You’re Too Much, which won him the Rising Star Award at that year’s Asia Artist Awards. In 2019, he became part of the Netflix series My First First Love. That same year, he acted alongside Jang Dong-yoon and Kim So-hyun in the KBS2 sageuk Tale of Nokdu, which earned him the Best New Actor trophy at the KBS Drama Awards. In 2020 and 2021, he appeared as one of the main characters in JTBC’s Run On and tvN’s Doom at Your Service.
