Ryu Hwa-young joined the South Korean girl group T-ara as its seventh member in July 2010. In 2012, she suddenly departed the group following a bullying controversy. Many fans believed that she was mistreated by her agency and other T-ara members. However, in 2017, a former T-ara staff member alleged that Ryu Hwa-young and her twin sister were the actual bullies.

Ryu Hwa-young made her debut as an actress in the two-episode SBS drama special Mother’s Choice in 2014. In 2015, she became part of the main cast of the tvN series Ex-Girlfriend Club. In 2016, she played a sugar baby in JTBC’s Age of Youth. In 2017, she won Best New Actress at the KBS Drama Awards for her work in Father Is Strange and Mad Dog.

Ryu Hwa-young’s twin sister Ryu Hyo-young was a member of the South Korean pop group Coed School and the girl group F-ve Dolls. In 2012, she got involved in a nip slip accident while performing on the SBS music program Inkigayo.
