UEE was part of the South Korean girl group Five Girls under Good Entertainment, but they disbanded even before they officially debuted in 2007 due to their agency’s financial problems. Two years later, she was added to After School, which has an admission-graduation system. She “graduated” from the group in the middle of 2017 following the expiration of her exclusive contract with Pledis Entertainment.

UEE made her acting debut playing the young counterpart of Go Hyun-jung’s character in the hit 2009 MBC sageuk Queen Seon-deok. In 2011, she starred in the KBS2 series Ojakkyo Brothers, which won her Best New Actress trophies at the 48th Baeksang Arts Awards and the KBS Drama Awards. In 2013, she received an Excellence Award at the MBC Drama Awards for her work in Golden Rainbow. In 2016, she headlined the MBC melodrama Marriage Contract, which earned her the Best Actress trophy at the 23rd Grimae Awards and a Top Excellence Award at the 36th MBC Drama Awards. In 2018, she took home an Excellence Award at the KBS Drama Awards for her performance in the family series My Only Ally.

UEE’s father was a retired professional baseball player, who also served as head coach of the South Korean baseball teams Nexen Heroes and SK Wyverns. She was a competitive swimmer during her high school years. She dated actor Lee Sang-woo and Korean-Japanese singer Kangnam. In an episode of MBC’s I Live Alone, she revealed that the stress caused by rumors about her weight pushed her to eat only once a day for eight years.
