ginnie, it must really be a matter of taste, because to answer your question ("is it that great?!?!"), I have to say, for me it really is. I'm thoroughly enjoying Coffee Prince, more than I expected (as you described, I was expecting it to be decent and watchable, but it's been a lot more fun than that). I know it's not necessarily high art but I find myself disappointed when each episode ends. I like the setup they've got going, and the fact that there's entertainment without huge drama. (Yet.) To be sure, it doesn't have stiff competition but I don't think that's the main reason for the high ratings. High ratings can suggest a few things (lack of competition, popular cast, etc), but consistently climbing ratings is suggestive of more -- that there's genuine interest in the story and development that's engaging viewers.
This may all change, because I've found it's not unusual for the first two or three weeks to be stronger than the rest of the series. But I totally agree with your assessment of Bad Couple -- for me it was really fun and fresh for the first six weeks, and then it hit a plateau (or maybe more like a gentle peak). It's still interesting, but it's been down-graded from "gotta see" to "a pretty fun watch."

Thank you for the post!
I think ratings are doing well because of the casts, the nature of the drama (happy mood and bright atmosphere) and sorta weak competitors on other channels. KBS's drama is an 8 episode series set in the ancient times with no known cast but beautiful sceneries. SBS's comedy is getting some good reviews but it is offending some Koreans due to its controversial stereotypes of people in Gangnam area. I see people being offended and thus switching channels especially in Seoul. (If I was to guess, CP's Seoul ratings should be substantially higher...) So I think CP is very lucky to be in this time slot versus its original Saturday Sunday time slot. If it was in that time slot going against Bad Couple or Go Karl and Dae Jo Yong, I wonder if its fate will be the same. After all, Sat/Sun timeslots are harder to gain ratings when you are competing with people's weekend plans as well.
I think SBS and KBS also initially thought they were going to compete against Bae Yong Joon's drama "Taewangsaeshingki" (spelt something like that LOL) and it was supposed to be a huge drama like Jumong hence the programming was aimed to tackle that group of viewers perhaps. But when TWSSG's schedule went haywire (Was supposed to be Mon/Tues), they had to postpone it to air later this year or maybe next year. Hence, CP was re-scheduled to move forward and change time slots. Good for CP but bad news for TWSSG.
Frankly, I am still not completely blown away by Coffee Prince's plot and how things are set up. Episode 6 was the best episode thus far (actually tempted me to watch only that episode LOL) but I didn't really like episodes 1-5. The show overall right now is fun but really..is it that great?!?! Oh well...just something I feel about the show which does not jive with many people. Just like Bad Couple...I find the series I am watching now are so-so...not a disapointment to watch but definitely nothing that leaves me in awe.

You are so killing me, with no spoilers but I respect you too much to complain. Thanks for Ch.2, it must be a big book with 20 chapters. If only it was in English!!

OMG you are a lifesaver. I can't wait for the subtitles to come out so I've been watching the episodes w/out them and i can't understand korean at all. You do a really good job of thoroughly explaining each ep. Almost as good as the episodes themselves! Anyways thanks so much:)

Too bad there's no English version of the book? Anyway, I was waiting for more going-ons from the book. Spoilers? Absolutely love them for this drama especially when its taken from a book. Harry Potter? Sorry, I'm more into "LOST" spoilers. Luckily all my favourite US TVs are on extended breaks (Gee, luckily there's Kdramas to fill up the other half of the year) or I'll be like "why don't someone add more hours to the day" as well.
Thanks once again.
P.S. An off-topic request. I'm looking around for Korean internet radio stations. Can you recommend a few with easy-listening korean songs, preferably with lots of female djs with sexy voices. :)

hehe that's so interesting! i was addicted to your summaries before i started watching the show.
now the book itself proved interesting. :) as much as i want to know th ending, i hope the drama would differ slightly from the book and give the audience a surprise. :)
yoon eunhye is seriously a dedicated gifted actress.
thanks for your hard work!
