Admiral Yi Sun-shin and Yi Heon Seja fought the Japanese invaders during the Imjin [aka Seven Year] War. This article illustrates the petty jealousy of rivals among military leaders and at court, and the kind of political partisanship with which both leaders had to contend. It’s also an inspiring account of the admirable admiral.
Gwanghaegun was about 17 when his father evacuated the court from Hanseong and left him behind to fight a rear-guard action against the Japanese. Given his earlier experiences and the bloodthirstiness of political rivals, is it any wonder that he’s a sleep-deprived basket case as THE CROWNED CLOWN opens?
I’m gonna read this article once I have more data!
That was a nice poem about the admiral you posted there. He seems quite the artistic warrior. My favorite war leader is Kim Yushin of Silla. Not because I studied history and prefer his methods most, but because I’m SO biased after QSD, lol.
I’ve been wanting to ask this from you guys the expert Sageuk watchers, and you provided me the perfect window by this post. Do you know of a sageuk that has Yushin, Gyebaek and Yeon Gaesomun, all 3 of them?
So far the only sageuk I’ve seen that takes place in Shilla is THE BALLAD OF THE PRINCE. I’ve only seen the two movies, so cannot comment on the dramas. I hope this helps.
Talking Cupboard is my 2nd favourite site after DB! I often go there to placate mu OCD induced Joseon hairpin and robe-designs fascination, lol.
Thanks for all the links! A film with all the 3 Generals from the Three Kingdom era, and it’s a comedy? A COMEDY??!!?? Woah. I’m baffled. Definitely should check it out.
Yes indeedy. ONCE UPON A TIME IN A BATTLEFIELD is by Lee Jun-ik, who directed THE KING AND THE CLOWN. It reminded me a bit of Monty Python’s HOLY GRAIL, although there weren’t any Killer Rabbits. 😉
Lee Jun-ik! Another reason to watch.
I looked up Monty Python, and…Trojan Bunny?!? Pfft. And it doesn’t even stop there and ended up sounding like ans Easter Apocalypse! LOl.

@peony,
So far the only sageuk I’ve seen that takes place in Shilla is THE BALLAD OF THE PRINCE. I’ve only seen the two movies, so cannot comment on the dramas. I hope this helps.
@kiara mentioned this is a post a couple of years ago, and it’s a great reference, complete with cross-references to years, reigning monarchs, and drama titles:
https://thetalkingcupboard.com/resources/sageuk-timeline/
The sageuk movie ONCE UPON A TIME IN A BATTLEFIELD / HWANGSANBUL has all three characters in it. It’s a comedy. The sequel, BATTLEFIELD HEROES / PYONGYANG CASTLE, naturally does not have Gye-baek in it since he died in the battle of Hwangsanbul.

There’s also the 100-ep. YEON GAE SO MUN, in which all three characters are listed:

GYE-BAEK is apparently missing Yeon Gaesomun, but also has Park Sung-woong as Kim Yoo-shin.
