This is such an American ideal: you can be who you want to be, you can do whatever you want to do. You don't have to satisfy anyone else's expectations or make anyone else happy. It seems like it comes as a shock to Ji An that she can let go of corporate success, but Ji Soo has been living this way all along. She wants to bake, so she bakes. Same for Hyuk and Mr. Baker. It will be interesting to see this idea take hold of Do Kyung and especially Cinderella.

Hmm I'm a bit on the fence about Ji-soo. I feel like she's been shielded all her life and told "follow your dreams, it's okay, we'll support you." Ji-an's sacrifice is what gave her the strength (and financial means) to pursue her dreams.

Look at how irresponsible Ji-soo is: decides on a whim to live with her rich parents, decides to pretend to be Ji-an, decides not to... it's because she's made "I'm free to do anything" decisions all her life without suffering dire consequences.

The ideal is you follow your dreams and take responsibility for yourself. You choose to do what you want but you understand that you'll have to sacrifice something else. If what you chose is what makes you happy, the sacrifice should be worth it.

I just don't see her that way. She decided to try the Choi family because she was angry at the family that raised her and felt they didn't really love her after all. She went there looking for love, not money, and she's been shocked at the way Haesung Group governs their lives. She made a commitment to baking and she's keeping it, no matter how her birth mother has tried to stop her. When it comes to taking responsibility for her dreams, she is going to sacrifice her place in the Choi family in order to be herself. And then Seo Hyun will take courage from her siblings and stand up to them too. Then, finally, their parents will have to decide between their children and Haesung Group. Which means Grandpa also will have to choose between having his way and having a family. At least, that's what I think has to happen to get to a happy ending. What I haven't figured out is how Seo Tae Soo gets to a happy ending.

That is the ideal but as long as she stays in the Haesung house, I don't see her as legit "following her dreams despite adversity" yet. What is the real threat to her dreams right now? She's not starving or losing a roof over her head by following her baking dreams. Even Rich Mom's threat to lock her up at home until she follows their rules didn't really last a day. So far, she's gotten everything she wants not by working hard but by crying and being hardheaded.

Before all the fiasco, she still lived with her parents but (1) didn't contribute to the household expenses and (2) didn't help with the maknae's school fees even if her "unni" has to juggle part-time jobs and Ji-tae is unable to date comfortably and Tae-soo was working hard labor at his age. They never blamed her for following her dreams, I'd hate them if they did. But it's not right for Ji-soo to claim she's following her dreams by her own effort without recognizing that she can do all of those (quitting her job, starting an apprenticeship) because she had a safety blanket. It's easy to make those decisions when you have a house whose rent is paid for by your parents and older siblings and a mom who does the household chores. All you have to do is wake up, eat, go to work. If the baking thing fails, you can just look for another opportunity again. You don't have to worry about starving or living on the streets.

If she really wants to claim independence from Haesung and their rules, she should move out and do everything by herself. Actually, this is what I want her to do. It's the best way to stick it to Rich Family that their $$$ won't get them everything. Otherwise it's a bit silly to claim, "Don't interfere with my life decisions, screw your rules! Meanwhile, please feed and house my adult self."

Yes, she started out as immature and naive, but she is growing up. The fact that she doesn't wear those pigtail braids anymore is visual clue that she is growing up.

Ah, and for me, Seo Tae-soo's happy ending is divorcing his wife but reconciling with his kids. I feel like their marriage is too bitter now.

That's probably a real life ending, but can't see it happening in a drama that has two plus smiling families as its cover photo. That says to me that everyone has to make up by the end. Families have to be reunited. Mom may have to make some big sacrifice to reconcile with Dad, but it has to happen.

BTW (sorry for spamming your notifs!) but I love that we can now discuss this show even without it being recapped.
