Yay!

Open thread! Hooray!

1. My wife and I are on Episode 14 of Super Rookie. Han Ga In is growing on me, but I still have issues with her. She reminds me a lot of Kim Haneul in the drama Bimil. (But that's not necessarily a good thing, because Kim Haneul was really frustrating to watch in Bimil). If people want, I can give my impressions (and my wife's impressions, unless she happens to pop onto dramabeans and wants to say her piece).

2. Oh, by the by, we finished My Love Patzzi last week and my wife and I could not have had more different opinions. I thought it was great and was very happy at the end, and my wife punched a pilllow. I thought it was clear who Jang Nara picked in the end, and my wife thought it was purposely ambiguous and stupid and Jang Nara should stop being annoying. In response, I have a number of Jang Nara songs ("It's Alright" and "I'll Be There For You" in particular) that I've been sneaking into playlists that my wife listens to, and sometimes she'll say, "wow, who's that singer?" and I'll say, "why? do you like her?" Hehe! LOL! I can be sneaky when I want to be, and sooner or later my wife will admit that Jang Nara is not annoying.

3. I purchased Sweet Spy a few days ago (still waiting on delivery), and so after Super Rookie, that's our next one. I am excited because I really like Nam Sang Mi a lot (even though my wife thought she was really annoying in Gourmet). *roll eyes* I can just tell there will be battles to follow. It takes a whole lot of effort to convince my wife. I guess we have to start watching Love Letter, Bad Family and Time Between Dog and Wolf to get her to agree that Nam Sang Mi is a good actress. I sort of wish we didn't see Nam Sang Mi in Gourmet first, because I do admit she was kind of annoying in the beginning. BUT, Nam Sang Mi in the music video with Lee Seung Gi ("Words That Are Hard To Say") was soooooooo good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWRbAnXOOP8

4. I need help finding an authentic, Region 1 DVD box set of Bad Family, Soulmate and Mixed Up Investigative Agency. Can someone help me find these DVD sets to purchase?

HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE! An-nyung!

i am overcoming (hopefully) my mental road block in writing my project's literature review. i wish i know how to switch from academic writing to creative writing and back. it is frustrating cause i need to write an ad for another assignment and ideas are being rejected for being too logical (read: boring).

i need wacky ideas. yet, at the same time, i need to write academic. sigh.

i wish i have a sherlock holmes' ability to switch left and right my brain.

It's awfully hot here in my side of the Philippines and I still have 2 episodes of BBF to watch. I just heard that the Filipino-dubbed version of BBF will be aired by ABS-CBN on March 31 and I hope they find the most suitable talent for GJP.

The rival network did such a lousy job at dubbing Coffee Prince that I almost tore all of my hair out in misery.

Am currently watching Kwon Sang Woo's BAD LOVE and I'm 3 episodes away from the ending but I'm losing interest. I like Kwon Sang Woo but the storyline is realy tiring--some of the characters are really stubborn.Grrr...

Oh well, have a wonderful day, guys. And I love your blog, Javabeans,

Hey Samsooki - I bought my copy of Bad Family off of ebay seller i_eat_u_eat. I'll buy my copy of Mixed Up Invest. Agency from him too. Quick and perfect condition for a reasonable cost.

Random blurb here: I listened to Boa's US album and it was embarrassingly awful. The english was really...ouch. As an ESL-tutor, I might be biased, but man, she should have been trained in English a bit longer/better.

On the other hand - I love Epik High!!! And while I love the k-music, the fact that they give their English-speaking fans some love on their website is totally awesome!!!!

@7, B020. Thank you for your help. I found the items and the ebay seller. Not quite sure what I am getting though. It looks to be a bootleg version.... how can they sell an entire DVD series set for $16.95? After you get your DVDs, let us know whether you believe the DVDs are authentic. Thanks in advance!

Oh, Super Rookie! ^^
It had its draggy moments (could've been better as a 16-ep drama), but on the whole it was fun and goofy and hilarious (despite Han Ga In's meh-ness). I really enjoyed it.

Nam Sang Mi is adorable in Bad Family. :) And she's the sole saving grace of Sweet Spy (the plot--and the drama along with it--goes off the rails in the middle when the low ratings forced the writers to cave in to the netizens' demand for more focus on the love story. Consider yourself warned lol). I gotta say Gourmet was probably her "worst" performance so don't judge her by that, Samsooki & Wife.

Can't believe we'll be seeing the last BBF episodes next week. It's been a crazy ride.

Don't forget to turn your lights off on Earth Hour, everyone!

@ CyNurse -- I am so jealous! My cousin keeps complaining too that it's really hot over there, but all we've got at this side of the world is cold and rain! >__< When I was there in December, I found the hot weather glorious!

So I've managed to get people hooked on BBF when these people have never ever seen any foreign media ever. And I am wondering what to do with my life once it's over...starting next Tuesday! GAH. I know they'll probably air specials and milk it for what it's worth, but still....while I roll my eyes at the predictability, utter "WTF" as part of my normal vocabulary whilst I watch, and discourage others from watching it...I can't help but be obsessed with it anyway... who needs reality when you can watch BBF repeatedly!

Anyone else anticipating Kim Ah-joong's drama? While some may argue that 200 pounds beauty was overrated, I totally fell into the bandwagon and loved that movie. So I'm hoping while this cannot top BBF love, it will be a good taper opposed to going through a complete withdrawal of kdrama obsession. Any other good ones to anticipate?

For the thirty-second time, I cannot wait until summer!

@11,

What if Kim Haneul (as the robotic good girl Lee Hee Jung) had to compete in a Blank-Vacant-Stare-With-Watery-Eyes Contest against Han Ga In (as the robotic good girl Lee Mi Ok).... close contest indeed.

We are enjoying Super Rookie a lot. I am actually surprised at how much I like it, despite the somewhat medicore writing and editing. Eric Mun is REALLY surprising, because I am not a fan of Shinhwa or Eric trying to rap in general.

Could it be that Eric is a better actor than he is a singer/rapper?

Oh Ji Ho as Bong Sam is also multi-dimensional, although he tends to be locked into "I'm Jealous And Frustrated And Angry Now! Rowwwwwr" mode with his face shaking and his eye balls bulging. It is a tough thing, to be told by the director to put his "Rowwwwwr" face and forget about subtleties. Still, the interplay between Bong Sam and his dad are truly something else.

Good morning samsooki

When my husband went to Hawaii in February, I had him go to the Costco in Hawaii Kai. They have some good Kdrama DVD there. He bought me some Kdrama DVD and they were the original one. If you know anyone who lives in Hawaii, the local there know where you can get some good Kdrama DVD.

You need to check out these (not in any order):

1. On air (2008)
2. Worlds Within
3. Terroir
4. Gourmet

These I have seen, they are pretty good.

I dunno why I watched Super Rookie but I did... I think I watched it after Phoenix (Bul-sae) where I had the hots for him coz he had this really pretty background music whenever his charming self materialized onscreen.... I can't remember much about Super Rookie, I thought it was okay, a man becoming someone when he was nothing... First time I laid eyes on Oh Ji Ho too.

Switching off my lights tomorrow here in Malaysia! Dunno why they're harping about it so much this year when Earth Hour passed by last year without so much as a whimper... :-)

@17. Thanks for the recommendations. We have Gourmet, and even though it was kind of long and the plot was a little slow at times, I really enjoyed it because of the mini-stories behind different kinds of food and how Kim Rae Won interacted with all the mini-story people. Our list of DVD sets to get is getting longer each week.

My list of things to watch:

1. 1% of Anything (2003)
2. Dae Jang Geum (2003)
3. Attic Cat (2003)
4. Lawyers (2005)
5. What Star Did You Come From (2006)
6. Snow Queen (2006)
7. Bad Family (2006)
8. Soulmate (2006)
9. The Time Between Dog and Wolf (2007)
10. Mixed Up Investigative Agency (2007)
11. Dal Ja’s Spring (2007)
12. 9 End 2 Outs (2007)
13. Il Jae Mae (2008)
14. Last Scandal (2008)
15. Truth (2008)
16. Beethoven Virus (2008)
17. Who Are You (2008)
18. Hong Gil Dong (2008)
19. Boys Before Flowers (2009)
20. Return of Il Jae Mae (2009)

This list is 20 series long! Where to find the time (and the money) to buy and watch everything! My list in order of favorites now:

1. My Name Is Kim Sam Soon
2. Coffee Prince
3. My Girl
4. Full House
5. Goong
6. Delightful Girl Choon Hyang
7. The Grand Chef
8. My Love Patzzi
9. Super Rookie
10. Save The Last Dance For Me
11. Bimil

Still, my "recommend" list would include 1-10, and the only one I would not recommend necessarily is "Bimil". HOWEVER, my mother-in-law raved about Bimil and liked it soooooo much, so, to each his/her own?

@ 16 Samsooki

Wasn't Eric something? :) Not a Shinhwa fan either, so I was pleasantly surprised that he was willing to subvert his pretty boy looks/persona by playing this lovable loser. He had excellent comic timing too.

Yeahhh Oh Ji Ho was pretty bad lol. It's a shame because like you said, his character was multi-dimensional. I guess that's why I could never hate Bong Sam. And despite his bad acting, there's something to be said for OJH's willingness to look like a fool lol. (by the way, he's much improved in Fantasy Couple)

Yay open thread!

I've become ADDICTED to 무한도전 (Infinity Challenge). I watched their BBF parody, and laughed every minute of it. It begins as BBF, and then devolves into terrible drama cliches. It's pretty much amazing. XDD ( It's here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRqcnVunxfQ ) Junjin makes a strangely pretty Jandi, and MC Yoo as Jihoo is awesome. XD ALSO! Noh Hong-cheol as Yi-jung is GOLD. XD (They've also done parodies of SNSD's Gee and Big Bang's Haru Haru which are amazing. XD)

As for their regular shows, right now I'm in the middle of episode 146, where they're doing a search for another 돌+아이/Dol+i (they call it 돌+아이돌/Dol+Idol, lol!), and it is CRACK. I only understand about every 30th word, but it's hilarious, especially when they narrow it down to the 20-ish finalists. SO GOOD.

On a side note, I'm totally ordering Epik High's new album. I've never preordered anything before in my life--this is a testament to how much I love these guys. I just hope they fix the international ordering soon.. I'm also tempted to buy Tablo's book, but I can't decide if I want it in Korean or English. :/ Maybe I'll get it in both if it's cheap enough, so I can practice my language skeelz..

I'm having writer's block, so I'm procrastinating at the moment. And I can't figure out how to end my story.. Two possible endings, both of which I really like. CURSE YOU, INTERESTING CHARACTERS. Making my life hard. ㅠ_ㅠ

to Samsooki, if you like Eric, you definitely must watch Que Sera Sera indeed! It's wayyyy better than Super Rookie.
My recommendation for Kdramas to watch :
- What Happened in Bali
- All About Eve
- Thank You
- Be Strong Geum Soon, if you interested in watching long drama
- Capital Scandal

I just wonder why you aren't watching the "ultimate" kdramas like : 'the Seasons Series' ( Autumn Tale, Winter Sonata, Summer Scent and Spring Waltz ), Stairway to Heaven and Lovers 'trilogy' ( Lovers in Paris, Lovers in Prague, Lovers )?
( not that I recommended those, btw )..just curious.

Javabeans, again, love your translation of the interviews..those are indeed interesting.. Thank you for posting! Keep them coming, pretty please? :D

Hi guys,
When rewatching BBF I noticed the dark scary looking Goo Joon Pyo Valentine cookies with the light hair Jan Di made really really resemble Mme. Kang.

Go and have a look:

As it seems to be something to talk about today: It is cold and rainy in Germany (we even had snow two days ago). Luckily this seems to a good opportunity to cuddle up on the couch and watch some drama...

Make the most of your weekend, too!

@27, djes,

Yes, I probably should add Que Sera Sera.... sigh, my list is growing faster than I can watch!

1. What happened in bali ...... sounds a little bit too serious.
2. All About Eve, Thank you, Capital Scandal.... these are a maybe.
3. Be Strong Geum Soon..... 140+ episodes? Faaaaar too many episodes..

As for the "ultimate dramas".... the endless love series (Autumn Tale, Winter Sonata, Summer Scent and Spring Waltz), Stairway To Heaven, Loves in Paris, I'm Sorry, I Love You, etc.... I am a little bit gun-shy about buying them. I sort of feel like the melo-drama is overwhelming, the acting will be over-the-top, and the result perhaps might be too sad.

If I spend $$ and more importantly, if I spend hours and hours of my life, and hours and hours of my wife's time, watching something, I do NOT want to be sad at the end, even if it is a "good" kind of sad...

@#27 djes,

Totally agree. Eric's acting is way better in Que Sera Sera!
I think it's his best so far, although he really has a knack at comedic stuffs. His expressions came out very natural in Super Rookie. Most of the time I found artists tend to over exaggerated to be funny, hence makes it looks forced.

Even though Que Sera Sera is not for every one but its solid acting from all of the cast, good director & excellent music scores made me hooked & memorized.

To Samsooki -- I second what djes said. Que Sera Sera was fantastic. For me, it's up there with Soulmate in terms of everything. Production, acting, story, continuity--everything. It's a heavy drama, and it took me some time to get through it, but it was well worth it!

Pah. My spring break is nearly over. I guess I can't really complain though, I've been able to catch up on BFF (all of my Korean classmates have threatened to spoil me if I didn't catch up), and I started watching Sweet 18 a couple days ago. Not the best drama I've seen, but I'm a sucker for the contract/arranged marriage cliche :D

Gotta chime in for Que Sera Sera. It made me take Eric seriously as a "real" actor (which he then fizzled away with Chil Woo, but that's okay, that series was a hoot). QSS is intense, but not fiercely melodramatic -- I say this as someone who also haaaates the overdone "classic"/old-school kdramas that may have given Hallyu its start but never appealed to me -- like Winter Sonata, Autumn Love Story, Lovers..., Stairway to Heaven, etc.

Samsooki, I'd put Alone in Love and Goodbye Solo on that list too. In fact, I'd put them pretty close to the top of the list. Also, I think Nam Sang-mi was on the weak end in Gourmet, as someone said above, but if your wife thinks she sucks I would recommend NOT watching Time of Dog and Wolf. Now THAT has got to be her worst role, although I freaking love her (adorable, but in a tomboyish and funny way) in Bad Family. (That should go near the top of the list too! As a lover of comedies and a fellow Korean -- it speaks to the "family" aspect in a heartwarming, hilarious way -- that is a true winner.)

@ gallivanter, Sweet 18! Oh I loved that!
I still can't believe Lee Dong Gun and Han Ji Hye broke up!! they made a cute couple...............so when I saw the pics of LDG with his new gf, I went TT__TT
Anyway, Ji Hye, you better find better man.

I also like the fake / contract marriage plot, happy ending or not. I'm currently watching Hateful but Once Again, and even though I feel that this will be a sad/open ending, I just likeeee it.

@ Samsooki, well, yes, WHIB is a serious ( dark and sad ) drama... I can understand that you better choose happier dramas.. :) it's just me, I really dig sad and tragic dramas. :P

@ Javabeans, I am planning to dl Alone in Love! Is is worth? Time between Dogs and Wolf was okay, but I never like Nam Sang Mi, even in Bad Family...BUT, Bad Family is love. Maybe because of Kim Myung Min, and Heechul..hahhaa..
I love QSS ost, I still have W&whale's song in my ringtone list!

JB,

So... QSS, Alone in Love, Goodbye Solo to be added, with QSS and Soulmate nearing the top of the list. So, my order of "what's on tap" now is like this:

1. Bad Family
2. QSS.
3. Soulmate.
4. Mixed Up Investigative Agency

and then

5. Return of Dal Ja's Last Scandal Before 2 Outs. This last drama is supposed to be just awesome... a beautiful and artistic mix of martial arts, comedy and love.

Honestly, there is too much to watch. I don't want to get burned out, but I don't want to stop watching either.... Plus, I have some movies to watch too, like Sassy Girl, 200 lb Beauty, The Good The Bad and the Weird, etc....

I'm currently watching "Princess Ja Myung Go" and "Cain and Abel" ...I started off BBF but was too lazy to continue. I still hafta finish kingdom of the wind too as an obligation as a Song IlGook fan, but the drama dwindled so bad in second quarter, that I dun really have the heart to watch on......oh wells that often happens to me with sageuk tho'.....I always watch for a certain period, stop and then watch again later ^^~~

so far ja myunggo has yet to prove its quality, but cain and able is really good^^ but for some reason Chae Jungan looks weird...she's better in her coffee prince day, although I dun like the series that much...
ah and I still need to catch up on the latest episode of project runway korea...

I agree with javabeans that alone in love was good...it was prolly one of the best drama that I've ever subbed.....
but my ultimate recommendation has always been Boohwal^^~ great plot, great acting and great casts!!

Bad family is extremely difficult to find for some unphantomable reason. The usual sites don't have it, *scratches head* ONe of amazon's resellers has it http://www.amazon.com/KOREAN-FAMILY-SANG-MYEONG-PARK/dp/B000QB8X6G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1238177775&sr=1-1

I found it here http://dramaqueensg.wordpress.com/category/korean-drama/ and http://www.asiandb.com/store/detail.pfm?num=5079 but I can't vouch for either of these sites (never used them before). Also? the one at asiandb looks too pricey, imho, and seems a bit fishy.

I also found this thread (http://soompi.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=207481&st=0) at soompi, but hmmm, they look waaayyy too cheap so I'd be money they're not the official boxsets.

Sorry, my google-fu failed me. :( Sorry

PS: I loved this drama. Hilarious and sweet and totally satisfying. Plus, it's the not usual kdrama which is a plus. I'm v happy you added it to your list. Oh and Soulmate is very unique too. Great choices!

Samsookie! Wow you are on a roll! I have to concur with all the drama suggestions besides the epic loves. I have seen only Lovers and a bit of Lovers in Paris(which I hated , besides for Lee Dong Gun).

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has seen Nine-Tailed Fox? I started it last night (half of ep one) and I am a bit intrigued?(I think that's the word.) But I don't want to waste my time. Being that BOF is on its way out I don't want to spend my time watching something that is ultimately horrible.

Also any other suggestions? I don't necessarily want to see something like BOF anytime soon but something quirky would be nice. Something that isn't addicting but entertaining...that's what I need.

Cause seriously, I don't know how many BOF watchers there are out there but I was completely addicted and even when the show started to piss me off I had to continue to watch to make sure that things would follow the manga process!

Its horrible, that even when I wanted(needed) to stop waking up at 7 am to watch it streaming, exhausted from a night of studying or writing, I just couldn't! But thank goodness, there's just one more week...I can make it. And sadly, no matter how much I hate certain aspects, this show is like crack...and folks, CRACK IS WHACK (but so stinking amazing while your on it)! Now that I'm detoxing a little, I can finally see...

Oh and Time of Dog and Wolf...yes, no? I wanted to see Lee Min Ki but if its not a good idea...I can certainly pass.

Have a great Friday everyone!

@Sere,

I am not sure about those DVD sets.

불량가족 DVD는 왜 안나올까요.. sigh....this was the title of only website i was able to find through Naver regarding Bad Family. Translated - "Why Isn't Bad Family Out of DVD?"

I think maybe there was no official DVD version released for the US. And the rest of the box sets that are Region Code 0 with English / Cantonese / Mandarin are either bootlegs or "authentic" only for the China market, which means that the English translation is poor to unbelievably ridiculous.

Maybe I'll get the Korean DVD version (if it exists) and then hack my DVD player to force it to read Region 3 dvd's....

How is it that everybody has watched it, but it isn't available to buy anywhere? I don't get it.

Is eyelid/nose surgery not even considered plastic surgery in Korea?

I remember watching a Chinese bootleg of a Korean drama, and the English translation was something like:

"I am so upsad. You mistresses do not leave it to all I have and your love to my life not more than the cost of living."

Of course, this was supposed to be a tender emotional scene and I could not stop laughing even though the main character was clearly very upsad. If I didn't speak Korean, I would have sworn that monetary inflation was killing their relationship.

Hello to all you fellow KDrama fans!

Reading your comments about your drama ranking lists and recommandations made me so nostalgic that I decided to post here for the first time...I've been reading this blog faithfully for quite some time now;)

I just had to think about the first KDrama I watched and how this whole madness started:
It was actually all my husband's fault who bought the complete "Damo" set and more or less forced me to watch it. After episode one I was hooked...and so naive about what to expect! I though that all TV dramas were supposed to have a happy ending...was there any way that the main couple could not end up together?
Little did I know about the tragedies that happen in Korean dramas...I think that I never knew anything about the art of constructing love triangles before I came to know KDramas;)
I can still remember being puzzled and even being a bit angry at the bad subtitling (or at least what I thought to be bad subtitling)...why did they keep getting the names wrong...that girl was clearly calling him "Oppa" and they translated it as a completely different name! Oh, little did I know...

Damo started what I like to call me "First Drama Wave". It lasted for about two years and during that time I watched every Korean drama I could get my hands on.
Another fond memory is my first drama without English subtiles...while watching Goong I was so anxious to know how the story would turn out that I would start watching the unsubbed files and even learning Korean...the things you do for Drama;)

Well, but the first wave ebbed and I stopped watching KDramas for two years.
Then, end of last year, I got interested again and came to this blog to see what I had missed in the last two years...and found Coffee Prince!

Well, let's just say that my Second Drama Wave is still going strong;)
Of course, BOF is my Obsession Du Jour but to be honest I'm not so sad that'll will end next week ...don't get me wrong, the cast is excellent for the most part, the production value is really high...but the story had some weak bits until recently and I'm really afraid that now that the story is going again, the ending will be rushed and unsatisfactory. I hate those time jumps that give the viewer maybe 5 minutes to tie up all loose ends! If I suffer with characters through thick and thin for 25 hours of my life, I feel I deserve more than 5 minutes of resolution...that's not emotionally satisfactory!

Well, enough with the memories and the rant...greetings from Germany and have a nice weekend everyone!

@samsooki,

Soulmate, Alone in Love, and 9 Ends Two Outs are all good ones to discuss with your spouse about marraige, long term relationships, and friendships. Alone in Love covers parenting, and Son Yeh Jin's performance is a really spot-on depiction of what depression really looks like. Soulmate tells its story out of order, and it has the ultimate hipster (LCD Soundsystem?!?) soundtrack. It might very well be the best songlist in the history of television. :D

Before Hong GIl Dong and Iljimae, I feel that you'll want to watch Damo (which is very short) first if you haven't already.

Dal Ja Spring and Last Scandal are both really good choices since you loved My Name is Kim Sam Soon. I would also recommend "What's Up Fox / Foxy Lady" That show was written by the same screenwriter as Sam Soon (her followup show), and the sassy humor borders on being a kind of sex comedy.

If you liked Infernal Affairs, Time of Dog and Wolf is definitely high on the list. Same screenwriters as Typhoon.

". Plus, I have some movies to watch too, like Sassy Girl, 200 lb Beauty, The Good The Bad and the Weird, etc…. "

Weirdly, when I watched 200Lbs Beauty, I kept on thinking "wow, this person is very, very sad." To me, it's more a tragedy than a comedy.

Happy Friday everyone!
What a week I've had! I caught a bad cold, this was a good excuse to curl up on the sofa and watch a KDrama. Thanks to Javabeans hook up to Dramafever, I finally got to watch "My Name is Kim Sam-soon". Loved it! Totally made up for being sick. Coffee Princes was the first drama I saw and got me hooked but none since have given me that same delight until now! MNIKSS has become my 2nd all time favourite!
When I finished watching it I made the mistake of watching BBF episode 22-23. It really put an emphasis on the difference between a well written and produced drama and a poor one. Sorry all you BBF fans but for me it sucks big time. Please don't hate me, I'm not in the viewing demographic BBF was aimed at as I can remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard that JFK was assassinated!
So now it's Friday and I'm beginning to feel better just in time to return to work tomorrow!
Have a fun weekend y'all!
