Giant reaches new high, Mary hits new low

SBS’s 60-episode series Giant wrapped with a massive 38.2% rating today, ending its seven-month run on an all-time high. Not only that, the finale rating is also a sizable 5.5% jump from its previous high last week (which it drew with its 58th episode).

It’s enough to make you wonder how high Giant could have gone had it not had to deal with steady competition from Dong Yi throughout its first half; Giant stayed firmly in the lower 20% range till that drama ended, after which it enjoyed its constant climb.

That also means lower numbers than usual for its two competitor dramas: MBC’s comedic Queen of Reversals only dropped a bit with a 9.8%, but KBS’s fluffy romance Mary Stayed Out All Night hit a new low with 5.7%. Ouch. Although I don’t suppose a low-key romance with a meandering plot could compare with the finale of an intense drama that has been building to a climax for the past 60 episodes. No matter how cute Jang Geun-seok and Moon Geun-young are at playing giddy young lovers.

(Note: The above are AGB numbers, for consistency’s sake, but according to TNS reports Giant performed even higher with a 40.1% rating, while Queen of Reversals had a 9.6% and Mary Stayed Out All Night a 5.1%.)

Following Giant, we (FINALLY!) have the premiere of IRIS spinoff Athena: Goddess of War. After months (and months and months) of teasing, the 20-episode action-spy drama premieres next Monday, December 13. I’d almost forgotten about it in recent weeks because I’d grown so tired of hearing the same promo stuff without anything new, but now that it’s almost upon us, I’m hoping it’ll live up to its hype. Though anything with that much hype is facing an uphill climb.

Can't wait for Athena! And ouch for Mary, though I must admit that I haven't been watching.

"Though anything with that much hype is facing an uphill climb."

Why are you always so pessimestic and cynical about the potential of a drama to be successful whenever there is a lot of initial hype surrounding it? I've noticed that you always pass judgement about dramas that haven't aired, and more often than not, you always highlight one or two personal criticisms. Allow us readers and drama watchers the chance to actually be excited about dramas regardless of any flaws that may or may not exist.

Honestly, it's more about managing my expectations. The excessive hype can lead to a lot of crushing disappointments; keeping things in perspective is not the same thing as passing judgment.

Hmm I see both points of views here, but I think what JB was trying to articulate is that something that has been building up expectations with promos and teasers for the past months has a lot to live up to, and its sort of a general rule of thumb (just generally speaking) that the more hype there is for something, the more excitement that is built up, the real thing eventually can't compare. Usually that's why trailers for movies and such always tend to be better than the actual movie, because its intended to grab your attention to make you watch it.

My two cents....

as a faitful follower of dramabeans please do not get me wrong, but I sometimes think the same like optimist.
some of your comments are really enjoyable when you write your comments in a sarcastic way. but sometimes, I feel uncomfortable, too. you can be really harsh in some ways.
anyway, I was thinking to write my comment about "mary" which is getting worse and worse for me. the last episode became really the last because I can not see any romantic vibe and sincere feelings between the leads, also even a liitle bit logic. all the things just seems to me too unnatural, unrealistic, bla bla. one of the good thing is MGY in that drama and also I could see Kim Jae-wook's talent once more after "Bad Guy".

Yup,I just checked out of Mary. I was in the midst of watching episode 8 when I decided enough was enough. I too am not feeling it...any of it.
I do love the actors, and have thoroughly enjoyed them in other ventures, and do think they have loads of talent and charisma. Especially Kim Jae Wook who I am DYING to see in a lead role.
I think the drama could have been more interesting if the two male leads were labelled generically and without the titles of 'male lead' and 'second male lead' which does indicate who will play second fiddle.
But yeaah, I'm sad that the drama isn't enjoyable anymore, cause I was super excited for it. But now I can spend time time stalking Secret Garden which I am LOVING :)

"But now I can spend time time stalking Secret Garden which I am LOVING"

Same here! I just can't get enough of it. Hilarious in so many ways. I may be biased of course being a great fan of Hyun Bin! But fan or not, one has to admit that it is indeed a "must see" drama. :)

0

"can spend MORE time stalking Secret Garden" - although I think you got the jist of what I was saying :D
And yes, I also love Binnie ever since his swoon-worthy character in Kim Sam-Soon, LOVE that show.

And its funny though, to compare both shows: was really pumped for Mary, because I love JGS and do follow all of his dramas (or most of them), and the premise did sound like loads of fun. But that one totally failed to meet my expectations and I'm even surprised at my own dropping of the drama, which I don't often do.

But then, I wasn't at all excited about Secret Garden. It sounded okay, but nothing fantastic, but only after skimming the first review of it here that I realised, I gotta watch it! And while I got my quirks with that drama (like the hundreds of questions raised at the end of the recent episode) I do love the tone and comedic situations. Most of all, the actors portray the characters perfectly and make them loveable and hateable both at the same time :)

I completely agree with you, Fasiris Fay. From the first episode, something about MaryOAN seemed a bit...off. I kept waiting for it to catch me, but it didn't. Maybe both leads are a little too quirky for me to stand. Maybe its that I do wish she'd get with the second male lead in order to add some stability to her life. Who knows.

But Secret Garden is my crack! English subs can't come out fast enough. The male lead is a little too thin in the face, but his strong personality makes up for it. The female lead in SG doesn't have a one-note personality like Mary; she has convictions but she's also vulnerable.

RIP Mary.

agree with you about MMM..I was so disappointed with this latest JKS drama. Though many JKS n MGY fans love this drama so much . i can't enjoy it. Not like YaB though it only gained medio rating but i like the story so much! This MMM is so flat..i don't want to give up since it's JKS' drama but watch it , it's kind a torture to me :(
Don't hate me to MMM lovers :(

I actually like that you voice your concerns about dramas with a lot of hype, javabeans. It helps me to calm myself down before the airing of the drama. When it finally comes out, my expectations are a little closer to neutral and the fall when it's disappointing is much less painful, but if it lives up to its hype, I can feel the exhilaration of watching a drama that is just simply amazing.

I prefer to allow my pre-airing expectations to be lower so that the drama is able to exceed it.

don't see how that is cynical or pessimistic. as jb said, it's about managing expectations, and it's always good to keep them at a reasonable level and then be pleasantly surprised, rather than get overly excited and then be horribly disappointed.

and besides, this is jb's blog, she has a right to express her own feelings about a drama.

Agreed! I like the way jb inserts her own personal views. They add character and individualism to this blog- and that makes it an interesting, thorough discussion of dramas, unlike some of the other websites out there, which tend to sound descriptive ala boring. Rooting for you, jb!

Ditto!! It's her blog, let her say what she wants! If she didn't, I probably wouldn't read it, lol. Cynicism is funnier, and more entertaining. And personal side comments, jokes, and fangirl moments make the posts more fun to read. I was going back and looking at some older recaps, where jb doesn't put as many side comments in... they're just not as fun to read as all the more recent ones.

Plus, it's always good to keep expectations low for this sort of thing. I love being pleasantly surprised.

Love this blog jb, love your style. gf's too!!

It doesn't matter what JB's opinion is in regards to a drama. There will always be a few who feel the opposite and there's always going to be other people that are excited wholeheartedly.
YOUR love for a drama isn't defined by JB. She likes what she likes. If you find a drama exciting, you'll enjoy it and continue to watch. And you'll always find fans here and on other forums that share your love.
As an longtime viewer, JB often knows what to expect out of a drama.
The best feeling is watching the start of a drama with low or moderate expectations and then being pleasantly surprised by it.
I prefer it to being crazy excited over 20+ dramas and then being disappointed by all but like two.

I also like it when their view don't always much up to mine because it does make for awesome discussions on these forums and it means I still have a mind of my own and can come up with solutions without following others.

Anyways, jb and fri, awesome job. You're a good excuse to void homework. I call my time on Dramabeans my "Cultural and International Studies" class. BAHAHAHA!

Why are you always so pessimestic and cynical about the potential of a drama to be successful whenever there is a lot of initial hype surrounding it? I’ve noticed that you always pass judgement about dramas that haven’t aired, and more often than not, you always highlight one or two personal criticisms.

Somehow I feel this comment goes against an unspoken social contract, especially as pertains to a blog like Dramabeans, which is not a pure k-drama news-oriented blog but one specifically intended for Javabeans and Girlfriday to espouse their very personal takes on various dramas and news items. Why criticize JB for sharing her opinions on such a blog? She never made any claims as to journalistic objectivity. Though it's an extreme comparison, isn't it a bit akin to being upset with Perez Hilton for being snarky about Lindsay Lohan's latest debacle?

While admittedly JB and GF may help influence Dramabeans' readers' views, the influence they wield is entirely at the discretion of the reader, no?

For example, a lot of people have lost interest in Mary Stayed Out for various good reasons whereas I still continue to find that it offers me something I value. My appreciation for Mary remains my own, for reasons personal to me, and only the drama has the ability to increase or diminish this appreciation. Certainly no one here - not JB, GF, or other readers - is trying to deny me my personal appreciation of this drama.

While it's generous of Javabeans to explain her motivations as to her hype-induced wariness regarding Athena, I don't feel a need for her to justify her commentary.

I'm imagining that while you're watching a drama or movie, Jbeans is trying to change the channel or take the TV away from you.

Haha, why put JBeans comments or reviews on a pedestal? That's just her opinion no matter how harsh or cruel it may get. Your level of enjoyment for a drama is entirely up to you and your tastes.

not that you are not entitled to an opinion..but that's just it. it is JB's blog (i think people tend to forget now that this is a blog, coz it has evolved into so much more than that, good job, dear JB!) so she IS entitled to her opinions, AND she can write them here..i guess that's the very reason she put up this site, to express herself in the context of k-dramas.

i think a lot of us here do not agree with JB or GF 100% too, but we enjoy and appreciate how they write, and them really for working so hard. i think the "comments" on your comments are proof enough how much appreciation we have.

so i'm not gonna bash you for your opinion at all, but maybe you could have said it in a better, more tactful way? it's just like visiting someone's home, and being polite while you're welcomed in it :)

i love this site coz it's all about R-E-S-P-E-C-T!

THANKS JB.. & GF!

Giant is less accessible because it is 60 episodes, but you'll be seeing a lot more of their cast if you aren't bombarded with Hwang Jung Eum commercials already. I don't think Giant will be "forgotten" especially when the seasons awards shows come around.

I get your views and thoughts about different successes though, to each their own.

To be honest, I think all three (LBS, PSM, JBS) deserve actor of the frickin' century for how awesome they were.
But, but, but... PSM had the most complex role (as in the best and most intelligently written kdrama character I've come across) I mean, thanks to him alone Giant even edges out Sandglass (imo), which is not an easy task.

One thing I won't understand is how LBS was more prominently marketed as the lead when we all know BOTH brothers were equals, in fact Seong-mo was more important right from the first episode.
If either PSM or JBS get 'best SUPPORTING actor', I will be gutted. I didn't see Go Hyun-jung getting 'best supporting actress' for QSD!?

But that's the men, they were all fantastic. All of 'em.

From the women, where no-one was 'bad', I seriously vote for Kim Suh-hyung, her Yoo Kyeong-ok was beauteous.
Better still, Park Ha-young and Nam Ji-hyun.

Gahhhh Giant finally ended. I haven't been able to catch the last two episodes and I've been DYING to...except papers and ugly things like that are keeping me away from finishing one of the most epic dramas ever.

Normally, I'm not a big fan of long dramas. I watch occasional episodes of the daily dramas and family dramas because my mom watches them but I don't usually watch them willingly. However, Giant is one exception. Granted I came into it a little later than other people but I was hooked so fast it was kind of scary. (Thank goodness it was summer then). Did it get a little ridiculous sometimes? Yes. Was CPY sometimes cartoonish? Yes. Did KM seem to get out of the curveballs CPY/MW threw at him a little too easily? Yes. And the business-y portions sometimes lagged. Despite its flaws, though, I continued to watch it because the story and characters drew me in. The acting was great, the sets and clothing were nice to look at, and the directing was very smooth. I'm both sad and relieved to see this drama off. Thank you to the cast and crew for making my Mondays and Tuesdays a little more fun.

I'm excited for Athena...but I'm also forcing myself to keep my expectations lower than they would be...just because too much hype could lead to disappointment. But I can't wait until next week to check it out.

I actually have not checked out Mary yet. But based on some reviews by other people...I'm not sure if I want to commit myself to it. I do hope the ratings pick up though. I always feel a little bad to see dramas have such low ratings. I hope the cast and crew fight to see a strong finish.

its not pessimistic. Most people look at things this way when it comes to dramas that get a lot of pre-air hype. obviously, when its talked about so much, people are hoping it actually comes out really good and well keeping your expectations on a low is better than being disappointed. lastly, this javabeans blog so i think that means she writes we read. and then discuss. not tell her how and what to write.

Giant was epically awesome. I think it will leave some kind of mark on those who watched it for some time. Though it had flaws in terms of sometimes getting too political-- (everything in life has flaws) -- Giant was very extraordinary in establishing the essence of power, life, human relationships, family, and fate.

I don't know, but watching Giant-- it wasn't just a drama that was entertaining, but I actually learned some lessons.

It was amazing in its start. And it ended amazingly at its end.

I just started Giant a few days ago and am liking it a lot. Great cast of veteran actors right from the get-go. That's for me. It seems the dramas that do the best these days with the Korean audience are the ones with a solid group of veteran actors, not just a cast of pretty young 'uns.

Whilst we were going around one of the palaces here in Seoul, we saw the crew of Giant shooting some scenes with the lead actor. I don't know if this was a part of the drama or he was doing a footage for a commercial, but yes, we saw him in the flesh, with a photo to prove. At time, I didn't even know who's photo I was taking until the next morning when I saw his face on TV.

The other cast members were there too but I didn't bother. Thinking back, I should've.

Sorry Jung Woo-sung, you're wonderful and everything, but -- Park Sang-min's (and Kim Soo-hyun before him) Giant character Seong-mo will change the way I look at Secret Agents, forever.
No macho posturing, no women, no fancy cars, no luxury apartments, no exotic foreign locales.
He only wanted to right a wrong. That's all.
Oh, he was badass alright, pretty crazy -- but that perpetual glint of fear in his eyes will haunt me for many years to come.

Feel really sad for MGY and JGS for all their hard work to turn out low ratings. there is just too much good stuff going on. maybe if this was a summer drama instead? but then they wouldn't look weird all bundled up like that.

Y'all going to hate me, but MSOAN feels a bit like Playful kiss to me (with the sort of ordinary feel, even though, strangely, nothing is ordinary abt being married to a rocker and a chaebol), but with much better acting. It's enjoyable while folding laundry or eating dinner, but nothing gripping.

I'm nervous abt Athena. There has been so much hype, I'm afraid it won't live up to my expectations. Phenomenal cast (yes, even with Lee Ji Ah, liked her in Legend and am waiting for her to do more action) and lots of eye candy in terms of actors and locales.

I'm going to be very critical, I actually think Mary Stayed Out All Night deserved such low ratings. It is way below my expectations. I was thrilled when this drama was going to happen with a great cast, but its everything is so cliche about it. I don't dislike MGY as an actress but her "Mary" character is annoying the crap out of me, especially with the whole "honey" ordeal. I just find her so unlikable here, unlike Cinderella sister. Finally got that off my chest. And the whole cuteness thing between JGS and MGY, I don't feel any of it. Don't even get me started with Mary's hair. LOL. Unlike You're beautiful, I enjoyed the chemistry between JGS and PSH. As for KJW, I am very disappointed in his performance. He was good in Bad Guy, but is terrible in Mary Stayed Out All Night. His character is so wooden, no facial expressions, little/no reaction, and just feels like a standing mannequin with good looks/clothes. I'm already half way through the drama, so I would finish it, but there seems to be no/little improvement to make me take everything back. At least the whole "chagiya" thing is gone. JGS seems to be the only character that doesn't annoy me all that much. But the plot is too ridiculous on many levels (I suppose that's the beauty of most kdrama romantic comedies), but honestly, even MGY and JGS getting married seemed unbelievable, and the whole issue with KJW's father wanting his son to get married to MGY is more ridiculous. Sorry for all the hard-core fans of this drama. Rate this drama 5/10, but still hoping that some miracle will save this drama from being a complete flop. Cross fingers.

I completely agree with everything you said about MSOAN. I was looking forward for this drama before it came out but honestly I am really dissapointed.
Anyways, hurray!!! for Giant it definelty deserves the high ratings.

I am a huge JGS fan and I respect MGY as a young actress. I never watch one ep of GIANT and never intend to. As of MSOAN, I felt bad that they receive such a bad rating. It proofs one thing, no matter how good the actors are, an entertaining and strong story is the major thing. What a waste ...they have the best casts, they could ever have, the beginning of the story is pretty refreshing and up beat...starting ep. 3 or 4..it starts getting downhill, the flow of the show is up and down and you pretty much can predict the next move and SO OLD SCHOOL.... I wish the PD team and the screenwriter hear our voice and please put more efforts on the plot and write sthg more fit to their characters to show the new trend of generation.....MSOAN fighting...

I don't actually watch Korean dramas, I've only watched My Name is Kim Sam Soon, started Iris, stared Boys Over Flowers (but not intending to finish), and currently watching Seccret Garden and Marry Stayed Out All Night.

I don't know, I guess i'm a romance fluff fan, but I am really digging MSOAN. 3>

i feel like mgy & jgs only did M3 so they can date under the pretense of acting :D ... i mean, they did read the script, didn't they?

For those of you who watched Giant, fondly as I: Here's the Edelweiss MV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CleIq_UuI_Y
I'll never forget the wonderful, wonderful cast. And these kids!

I know I'm one of the biggest rom-com/rom drama lovers out there. But if you have seen as many as I have, and I'm sure many out there have, some stuff has just gotten boring. I felt that both Mary and Playful Kiss deserved the low ratings that it got or is getting. I know that internationally I will be different, but I had a higher expectation for Kdramas. Maybe if Mary was one of the first few rom-coms or kdramas I've seen, then maybe I'd feel differently. Who knows. Anyhow - I love jb's & gf's commentary. They don't beat around the bush and often tell it like it is. It's refreshing for me to read anyways.

I think for all the fans out there - it's ok for people to not like a drama! There are plenty out there to go around. :) This year has been full of surprises. The ones that I thought I would like a lot, I ended up not liking :( And the ones that I really didn't care for at the start, I ended up really liking a lot. Odd how things play out.

True...Hey, isn't Athena replacing Giant?

If so, those in the low rankings will be low still prhps.

I hope to see more action in Athena than Rain's Runaway Plan B is the most I will expect from it, not the best of scripts or best show.

I was being careful to read the posts here as I'm right at the moment watching episode 26 of Giant. (Oh snap! Jeongyung has just laid down the law to stepmommy.) Don't want any spoilers.

While I'm enjoying the show, I'm going to be a voice of dissent and say I don't think any actor/actress in particular has wowed me in this drama. (And don't even get me started on some of the costumes, especially the pimping outfits Jeongshik wore.) So why am I watching this show? You tell me! It's my crack. I have Giant withdrawal when I have trouble finding ep's with eng. subs.

I do hope it ends well.

Giant was a blast in korea! How about international market? Though some dramas reached low ratings in korea but the actors of these dramas are famous in asia and that makes every network of other asian countries buy its copyrights despite of low ratings... I was disapointed the turned out of msoan but i love jks and his acting. too bad " giant" was on the same timeslot with msoan.. People has its different preferences and point of view.. But ill stick with msoan no matter what! Lol!
