Goodbye Miss Ripley signs cast, reveals plot

So the speculation was confirmed, and Micky Yoochun (Sungkyunkwan Scandal) and Lee Da-hae (East of Eden) have been cast in upcoming MBC drama Goodbye Miss Ripley. But the more interesting question is, what the hell is this drama about?? The answer may surprise you. Unless you’re psychic. In which case, why are you even reading this, because you already know what I’m going to say?

Reportedly, the drama’s key motif is a national scandal that rocked the media in 2007: the story of Shin Jeong-ah, a university professor and art curator at Dongguk University, who forged her credentials to get hired, and then embezzled funds from the art gallery’s corporate sponsorships. She got hired in 2005 under the belief that she had earned a BFA and MBA from the University of Kansas and a PhD from Yale, when in fact she was only a high school graduate. Her boyfriend Byeon Yang-kyoon, 19 years her senior, was a presidential secretary at the time, and helped her forge the paperwork and get hired.

The scandal lit a fire in the media and started a wave of background searches and scandals, where everybody’s schooling credentials went under extreme scrutiny at the time. She was particularly a focus of attention because (before the scandal) hers was considered a Cinderella story, a woman who had gone from nothing to becoming a society A-lister. As it turns out, all you really need to be Cinderella is an influential boyfriend and a fax machine.

They both served time and became infamous, not only for their crimes, but for setting off the media trend that fed off their story. You can see why it took Korea by storm too. They weren’t Bonnie and Clyde; they were supposed to be Cinderella and Prince Charming, only their white-collar crime rattled the social hierarchy.

The drama isn’t a direct true crime story, but apparently is inspired by the scandal. How closely it resembles Shin Jeong-ah’s story remains to be seen, but so far it’s a good hint as to where the main character, played by Lee Da-hae, will go. Her character loses her family when she’s young, and gets adopted into an unhappy home, which is just the beginning of her unfortunate destiny. It probably speaks to the character’s motivation for the ensuing schemes.

And NOW it makes sense why Kim Seung-woo (IRIS, Athena) and Kang Hye-jung (Flowers for My Life, Oldboy) are attached. The ajusshi angle is making more sense, although who knows how faithfully they’ll recreate the actual relationship between Shin and Byeon. And apparently Kang Hye-jung really WILL get all-about-eve’d by Lee Da-hae. Now it’s like I’M PSYCHIC.

I don’t know how Micky Yoochun fits into all this, but I’ll bet he’s the “real” love that gets caught in the middle of it all. That’d be my guess, because I don’t foresee him being the Clyde to her Bonnie. Or am I just under the impression that he’s his Sungkyunkwan character, and that he’s a righteous stick-in-the-mud? (Albeit a cute one, but you know, a rule follower.) Either he’s the first-love moral center that keeps trying to bring her back from the brink, or he’s the mark, as in the chaebol-prince-charming-diplomat-genius who gets duped into falling for her, and nearly marries her without a pre-nup, ’cause he’s all trusting like that.

Either way, the idea of using Lee Da-hae’s unlikeable public image to turn her into an anti-heroine? Is kind of BRILLIANT.

Goodbye Miss Ripley follows The Duo and premieres in May on MBC.

[EDIT]

So…apparently, Micky Yoochun ≠ his brother. WHO KNEW?

I'm torn... good story, uninteresting actors. I'll count on your recaps before I invest viewing time. Heck, I enjoy your recaps more than most dramas, so I'll just end up reading them instead of watching. You will recap, huh?

Btw, even tho it is a dramablog, a lot of people visit it I hope u put your bias aside, I see your unfavor for Lee Dae Hae but can u just be a little more objective?I can tell your hatred by reading the previous news. I know by saying this I may be hated. Eventho I dunno much about Lee Da Hae, this is all about the drama how she WILL act in it and it has not started yet so there should be no judgement up to this point.

Anyway I don't really care about it actually, I hope Yoochun can prove for every one in this blog that he is good and that you have no right to underestimate his power ever after this.

The plot is pretty refreshing, but I hope it will not go too far to the reality because it is pretty heavy esp to the sex scandal part. Seems like it will have a sad ending.

This is actually one of the most objective blogs out there. And just because the writer is stating her opinion, doesn't mean that she's hating someone. Don't take it personally. And a rational person will have his or her opinion and not follow someone else's. Most people here at one time or another has agreed to disagree with either JB or GF. We have our own minds you know. We just want to hear other people's take on kdrama-related stuff that's why we go here.

BTW, you sound like one of those people who took it personally when it was mentioned that Yoochun & LDH were not *serious* actors.

Oh, and I never actually heard anyone saying Yoochun wasn't "good". It's just that YAI was better.

But seeing the trend of swearing, biased/immatured comments, on certain actresses and actors that not on writers so called 'likeable' image, now I'm worried about my daughter more-will she become a puppet as well or she will be on her own opinion without influences from other.

0

It has been stated in previous entries that JB (and maybe even GF) are less than favorable of LDH. Although that's their opinions so I don't see how it needs to be remedied, but let's not deny it also.

@LOL

Not liking someone and having hatred are two very different thing. That on top of the fact that if you have yet to read their reviews then I suggest you do that first before making comments. In their elements, I have seen them both as quite objective and despite reservations for any actors have critiqued the drama based on the acting during the course of the drama, not before or after.

0

I think you need to go to Lee Da Hee soompi site then if you want only fangirling opinions instead of what JB and GF does best.

No offense intended no one is forcing you to read this.

I've been reading this blog for the past 2-3 years (because of the Dalja's Spring recaps), and I would like to point out that I am NOT a puppet. There were times when I've disagreed with JB's or GF's like for a character or actor... and if other commenters agree with them, that's FINE with me.

What I don't agree with or LIKE are commenters, who just because their opinions differ from JB's or GF's, they would accuse JB or GF of bias, of being unprofessional, of harboring "hatred" for actors/actresses they are fans of. Welcome to the real world where everyone, in this case BLOGGERS, are ALWAYS biased. (No matter how small a degree.) That's why most people write a blog in the first place-- to express their opinions on a subject of their choice.

You can post why you disagree with the views and comments, but please do so respectfully... No need to attack commenters.

I sure hope that's not what the producers and writers had in mind for the casting. Or they are quite low and hypocritical.

I only think that good actors and actresses should try different types of roles. This is one.

Also, I'm not really a 'fan' of anyone (actors, singers, any entertainers or public figures), but I have to say this: this is a bit biased. One example, in this post Lee Da Hae's name is attached with East of Eden (?) and not her most recent drama Chuno@

0

Required fields are marked *

the thing is, this is someone's blog, which means the writer is entitled to put their two cents in(one of the reasons why the articles here are so interesting). and i really don't think gf was hating on LDH by attaching her with East of Eden. i believe she actually watched that drama while perhaps she hadn't watched chuno? anyway, no where here does she talk about LDH's acting abilities, she just mentioned her unlikeable public image, which i think most would agree to.

Required fields are marked *

I also didn't say anything about anyone writing about anyone's acting capabilities. I don't even talk about whether the unlikeable public image is true or not true (I don't know, I don't live in Korea nor am I Korean related). But saying that she got cast because of her 'bad image', and it is her 'bad image' that is being utilized as 'brilliant' is just mean. I can't imagine the producers and writers thinking that way. I can imagine Lee Da Hae herself taking up the role thinking that way.

For the record, girlfriend recapped at least 1 episode of Chuno.

typo: I can't imagine Lee Da Hae herself taking up the role thinking that way (or even imagining of such possibility).

0

the 'unlikeable' is actually created more from this blog-if your read all their stuff related to this actress-the cream is added by her antis.

0

Well, you have no idea how entertainment management companies work then. Since LDH is already known for having a bad reputation, her management may have decided to go with this role to capitalize on this. Viewer: "LDH has been cast as a person with a tarnished public image, we HAVE to go watch this. Let's see how much of it seems true-to-life!"

I can see it as LDH (and her management) being cheeky, even bordering on humorous... That's my 2 cents (and since some people here are overreacting when it comes to the comments) you can take or leave my view on things.

0

i only brought up the acting abilities, because i thought maybe you somehow felt GF was putting LDH down by mentioning:
"I only think that good actors and actresses should try different types of roles. This is one."

i do disagree with you on that point. actors, whether good or bad, should try out different roles in order to grow and develop their craft. if kim tae hee only stuck to her more serious roles, we would have never known how well she could pull of the cute and charming character as she did in My Princess.

0

"one example, in this post Lee Da Hae’s name is attached with East of Eden"
Dont you think you're reading too much into this?? Lee Da Hae had bad publicity even for Chuno so would mentioning that make things any better? Also there is no such thing as pure objectivity and bias is a word that works both ways (liking and disliking)

Well then, to each his/her own opinion. I based mine on things I have seen so far, very few of which I just pointed out here, but not all. Also, as far as opinions go, I'll say this, this is what I think: girlfriday is witty, but snarky, sometimes way too snarky; javabeans is 'nicer', calmer, but learning fast from girlfriday.

Anyhow, doesn't matter to me, I come here mainly for the recaps. Good way to have a fast escape without wasting too much time, which is what I'm doing right now.

Required fields are marked *

@Lan
I actually did a double take when you mentioned that girlfriday recapped an episode of Chuno. I've been following this blog pretty much since the beginning and have watch dramas while reading recaps so I was surprised to see you state girlfriday doing a recap for Chuno so I went back and checked. Samsooki (we miss you!) and hjkomo were the two main recappers for Chuno with Javabeans, Dahee and thundie doing a recap each. To be honest, I don't even think girlfriday had joined Dramabeans at the time.

Another thing I would like to point out is that at least on this site JB has stated how much she liked Lee Da Hae in My Girl and Green Rose (please refer to the Green Rose recap). Even in some of the recaps for Hello! Miss, JB has expressed how talented LDH is and how she should've picked a better project (and most would agree, Hello! Miss was not a very good drama). I admit there has been some flaming involved when LDH is mentioned and a lot of it stems from fan backlash after the whole East of Eden situation as well as with her role in Chuno (some partial due to performance and some due to the way the director/scriptwriter depicted her role). Yes it is unfair to her, but it's also true that LDH has suffered from somewhat of a negative public image back in Korea (there was even anger over her leaving an award ceremony in the middle and there was still anger after she apologized).

But usually JB and GF don't get involve in the flaming and most of the time it's the people who post comments that usually start it. And to be fair, while they may make snarky and/or bias comments about actors/actresses on post relating to celeb/drama news, they are usually balanced when it comes to recaps. Like others have said, it's their views in the end and it's up to you to form your own opinion. A lot of times I don't agree with their views but I realize that they have their own bias as I do mine. And that's the point, we don't have to always agree and all of us are entitled to our opinions.

Sorry for the long post! I just wanted to clear up some things about the recaps, etc.

0

"Well then, to each his/her own opinion."
EXACTLY!....aren't you contradicting yourself here?!.....JB and GF have their own opinions which they have every right to post on their blogs EVEN if they are biased (this like I mentioned earlier includes bot liking and disliking) but as a visitor on their blog you dont have the right to dictate/decide what they should be posting...disagreeing with them is completely different from making judgments on their character based on the little you know about them...Also there is no such think as too snarky!...i say bring on the snark GF!..that's what makes your post so much more fun

0

"The division of Korea into North Korea and South Korea stems from the 1945 Allied victory in World War II, ending Japan's 35-year colonial rule of Korea. In a proposal opposed by nearly all Koreans, the United States and the Soviet Union agreed to temporarily occupy the country as a trusteeship with the zone of control demarcated along the 38th parallel. The purpose of this trusteeship was to establish a Korean provisional government which would become "free and independent in due course." Though elections were scheduled, the two superpowers backed different leaders and two states were effectively established, each of which claimed sovereignty over the whole Korean peninsula.
The Korean War (1950–53) left the two Koreas separated by the Korean Demilitarized Zone through the Cold War to the present day. North Korea is a communist state — though the last instances of the word Communism were removed from its constitution in 2003 — often described as Stalinist and isolationist. Its economy initially enjoyed substantial growth but collapsed in the 1990s, unlike that of its Communist neighbor People's Republic of China. South Korea emerged, after decades of authoritarian rule, as a capitalist liberal democracy.
Since the 1990s, with progressively liberal South Korean administrations, as well as the death of North Korean founder Kim Il-sung, the two sides have taken small, symbolic steps towards a possible Korean reunification."

I'm also confused. Moreover after knowing the plot, and the story from which it was inspired. I never heard about the scandal before, but reading that Shin Jeong-ah's boyfriend and co-conspirator is 19 years her junior, it's more make sense if Kang Hye-jung is the lead and Yoochun is the boyfiend. And thus comes the question of how KSW and LDH will fit into the story.

I initially thought it was 9 years old, too.

Kang Hye-jung only 6 years older than Yoochun, but it fits the older woman-younger boyfriend plot.

Somehow, with this plot (if my guess on Kang Hye-jung and Yoochun is correct), I feel that Jun In Hwa will be a better choice. I don't have anything against Kang Hye-jung. I like her. However, reading Shin Jeong-ah's story, Jun In-hwa is the first comes to my mind. Her acting in Baker King gave a strong impression on me ^^ She's amazing in that drama.

I got everything confused... but I'm glad we're all questioning our eyes. lol

omfg are they really trying to create shin jeong ah into a sympathetic character??? dude, she wore like designer brand name clothes all throughout the investigations (and we all know how she was able to afford all that shit). and she slept around w/ high officials and recorded every incident like a psycho and then used the evidence to blackmail them. wtf...

and sorry to ldh fans, but i gotta side w/ gf and jb on her. wtf is her problem? stop w/ the surgery, the whining, the attention-whoring, and just do your job and act. i loved her in 'my girl' and then she just let all the popularity get to her head. tsk.

What a great role where maybe she could create sympathy for the character.
As far as fictional bad guys, she could be more like Darth Vader than Voldemort.

isn't that what the media wrote about shin jaeog ah? who knows what the truth is...

LDH has issues for sure..when I read that she left in the middle of East of Eden and then dropped two films just like that I was like whoaaa!

but i don't think we should judge a person just cuz she gets surgery done.

thumbs up!
@yo...like upii said THAT is what the media said and the korean media can be vicious like that....i'm not try to lift the blame off her 'cuz the fraud and embezzelment are totally her fault but one can never take everything that the media says for face-value. Also the drama is said to be inspired by the the scandal and not a direct true crime story as JB sid so i dont think this is any attempt to create sympathy. I'd actually like it if they incorporated more dimensions into her character and story instead of making her a simple villain.

Do you get all of your news from this blog or are you actually reading them yourself to ascertain all of this about LDH? Surgery, whining and attention whoring? WTF? What kind of surgeries are you even talking about? I'm not denying that she hasn't had any, but you make it sound like she's had a ridiculous amount, especially compared to anyone else in the industry. If you're telling her to stop with surgery, you might as well say the same to all the other Korean actresses out there. You people get all that from pictures of her? Have you seen her in motion? Does she really look that different to you?
As far as attention whoring and whining, she's not contacting the news or putting herself out there for people who don't want to listen to her. She's posting on her personal twitter account, talking to her fans, fans who have an interest in her and who are her support system (the poor girl really needs it with how vicious people/media continue to be towards her). She shares her happiness with fans all the time, why can't she share her grief as well? The one time she shares her grief and she gets blasted for it. Just like people would say, "if you don't like what's written in this blog, don't read it", then if you don't like LDH, why are you reading her twitter? She's not attention whoring when she's not forcing it down your throat. She shared it with her fans, it's not her problem if you were just so interested in her you had to read what she wrote, when it wasn't intended for you in the first place.

I agree with other commenters. I used to have a lot of respect for Javabeans. Now, ever since Girlfriday joined, this blog has become more and more biased, and there is snark just for the sake of snark. This is your blog, yes, but understand that a lot of readers take your words to be the truth. It's obvious when you read comments in recaps where people say they don't even watch the shows, they just read your recaps and go off of that. Don't you think there is a way that you can be less biased? Or if you don't like an actor or actress, can't you just not report on them? What's the point of reporting when you can't be constructive or fair, and the results is just more and more people being ill-informed and bashing the actor/actress because they now have a platform and excuse to?

i just don't agree with your comment about Javabeans and Girlfriday (love GF) and never saw they bashing LDH, and i'm a huge fan and i would be disappointed if they did, they just stated their opinion without putting her down imo.

Thank you.

The bashing is done by the people commenting to their posts and the bashing is fueled by the bias in their posts. I'm pointing it out because it didn't use to be this way. In the past, even when Javabeans was being critical, she was always fairly unbiased and constructive. Now, it's become more and more snarky and biased. I know it's their opinion, but the problem is their opinion is taken overboard by a lot of other people.

I too feel the same. I used to have a lot of respect for the bloggers' opinion( still do, but it is not just the same) and was an avid follower and believer of dramabeans before. But these days, the bias is too apparent for me to take their words seriously. What I have found problematic is their tendency to hype up dramas which feature actors they like and diss others which have actors they do not like much, even before the said drama airs. I don't think 'both' the posts on Miss Ripley needed to focus so much on LDH's "unlikable public image" when there is a visible attempt to tone down the whole controversy surrounding the plagiarism charges on the Hong sisters' drama. Stating my opinion coz I have regarded dramabeans as an interactive platform n not a fanclub!

i have no idea why you would think i read ldh's twitter (i didn't even know she had one)...

as for what you said,

"Just like people would say, 'if you don’t like what’s written in this blog, don’t read it',"

i completely agree w/ you...

Then how did you know she was attention whoring? What exactly has she done to attention whore?

" “Just like people would say, ‘if you don’t like what’s written in this blog, don’t read it’,”

i completely agree w/ you… "

Then you should understand how stupid it is to bash her for something she wrote on her twitter.

Hmm. You got it, this IS a blog... but with readers taking JB's or GF's "words to be the truth", how is that JB's or GF's fault?
Why should they cut back on posting certain news because the results are readers will be "ill-informed"?

I get your point, but the thing is, I believe that readers also have a sense of responsibility in this. Receivers of whatever info from the media (in news sites or in blogs like this one) have the responsibility to double-check info, to look for consistency etc. It is up to us, the readers and commenters, to be critical-thinkers in this arena.

If a few readers are not thinking critically and taking JB/GF's words (or any blogger for that matter) as absolute truth, then it isn't JB/GF/blogger's fault. It becomes the reader's fault.

In the first place, JB or GF have never stated that what they say is absolute truth...They've posted news from other sources and stated their opinions on said news. Or watched shows, posted recaps, and stated opinions on said episode. Who are we to limit their freedom on writing? Or on stating their opinions?

Again, just my 2 cents...

i agree that a lot of people here take info here as fact. but really, if you don't have the kind of respect you did before, don't read anymore, its a simple solution. less biase? this is a blog, Dramabeans maintains it, works on it and spends her time on it, as do the other bloggers. she's entitled to give her opinion, no matter what it is.

I actually didn't think much of Lee Da Hye in My Girl, but that's only because I didn't like the drama as much as others had. I thought she did a very nice job acting out her character and it was obvious that many people liked her a lot.

Perhaps she needs to change her management company who would do a better job in guiding her. Someone who can do a better PR job as well. As for Lee Da Hye, it may just take one good project to get back on track, and this could be it.

Yes, I like your theory. Yoo Chun is like a reporter who found her true CV, but he reluctant to open it to public, but alas.. someone make it first to public, and it make him to repair her damaged reputation because of his love to Lee Da Hae. That will made him a first lead in this drama. :)
But, it's only my assumption, and sooo .. Yoo Chun bias. :)

I love Micky to bits. I hope he can show improvement in this drama and though I love him I can agree than in SKKS YAI acted better. big plus that Kang Hye Jung is here. She's a really good actress.

I think its also brilliant if Da-Hae accepted this role with same "idea" in mind. This role may fit her perfectly and raise her bar as an actress! It will good for her!

uh please...I DON'T think an opinion opposite that of an avid fan makes one an ANTI!

The plot sounds awesome, though I think it would work better as a movie than a drama. I'm just scared they might make it too much like a Cinderella story with first loves and love polygons to make LDH's character likeable when, in truth, the story of a calculating social climber would be just as enticing. I am also really looking forward to KHJ's return to the dramascape.

P.S. JB & GF Keep up the fabulous blogging!!

P.S. What's with the hating on girlfriday and javabeans? Control yourselves people. If they wanna be biased (which I don't think they are), it's their blog. I'm pretty sure they are allowed to state their own opinions. Don't be so close-minded and defensive. Besides, they do so much for us. Recapping dramas (quality recaps) take alot of time and effort.

Hmmm....this sounds very promising. At first the pairing seemed strange but now with such an intriguing and somewhat delicate plot, I'm already excited about it. I liked Micky in SKKS and at the time I watched, I didn't know he was an 'idol' and now its weird seeing his 'idol' image. Haha. Well, I'm looking forward to seeing how he'll do this time around. The only thing I've seen LDH in was My Girl, which being one of the first dramas I ever watched, is still one of my faves.

Yayy Micky! I have had the hugest crush on him ever since SKKS, and I hope this show lets him stretch his acting boundaries a bit. As for LDH...liked her in My Girl. Haven't seen her in anything since then, but I do like her acting (even if it is somewhat overdone and shrill, at least in MG). So yeah, looking forward to it in general!

Also, the whole I-don't-like-what-JB/GF-are-saying-therefore-this-site-is-biased thing is getting kinda tired, isn't it? As far as I'm aware this site is one of the more sophisticated out there when it comes to discussion and analysis of kdramas; the sheer fangirling (it's either extreme hate, or extreme love, with little justification) of other sites frankly make me a little frustrated (scratch that-- A LOT frustrated). So let's be thankful for what we have, yeah?
