Temptation of Wolves to become a drama
by | October 16, 2011 | 79 Comments

Another remake is in the works, this time from film to drama, with the adaptation of popular youthful romance Temptation of Wolves. The movie starred Jo Han-seon and Lee Chung-ah, but is perhaps most famous for catapulting a young Kang Dong-won to stardom.

The story premise is fairly straightforward, as a coming-of-age story about a country girl moving to school and ending up in a love triangle with two popular high school boys. The movie was itself an adaptation of a hit internet novel by the same name. At the time of publication, the book set sales records by selling 500,000 copies and was one of those early success stories of internet writers hopping into the mainstream when their online projects took off in popularity.

(Writer Guiyeoni has had some criticism for the literary quality of her works, but I can see how she became such a huge success if she was able to put out projects with strong narrative appeal. And they must’ve had enough of that, since she wrote a few more novels that were turned into well-known movie projects, like He was Cool with Song Seung-heon and Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do with Jang Geun-seok.)

The project has been licensed for adaptation by JS Pictures, which produced a number of successful dramas like Giant, New Heart, and Piano. Apple Tree Pictures is co-producing the project, and has titles like Time Between Dog and Wolf, Bottom of the 9th with 2 Outs, and The Man Who Can’t Marry under their belt.

Well, I’m always up for a witty, sensitive teenage romance, and if the drama can do what the movie did, hopefully that’s what we’ll get. And the question on everyone’s minds: Who will be the next Kang Dong-won?

That’s it. I’m going to watch this movie now. I love Kang Dong-won and coming of age stories, but I also knew this movie was going to be dramatic, which is always a turn off. But maybe a second try is in store.

    • 1.1 queencircles

haha. same here. I literally just pulled it up to watch.

    • 1.2 smiles

Its a really good movie – i enjoyed it a lot and i think you will too.

    • 1.3 Steph

WATCH IT! Lol, it’s so good.

I think this movie will work so well as a drama. Bring it!

  2. Linzer

I absolutely loved this movie!! I cried so freaking much! Hopefully the drama turns out good too. I’m never really a believer in remakes

    • 2.1 Birthday Girl

Kang Dong-won made me CRY A LOT–it was one of my first k-movies TT

  3. Jenn

Oh yay! I actually just watched the movie last week despite the cliches that a 2004 movie would offer because of my love of Kang Dong Won ever since 1% of Anything (although I honestly haven’t been able to watch any of his other films because the genres don’t interest me).

A drama would definitely make the pace slower which is a great thing considering how fast-paced the movie was. The length of a 16 episode (I’m assuming) drama would hopefully fill in on all the missing pieces the movie had (such as why the heck Jo Han Seon’s character even fell in love with the main girl in the first place?!)

*sigh* I feel like watching the movie again.

    • 3.1 Royalty

I love him in 1% of Anything! Finally, someone who watched it too! There’s no one that I know who had seen or heard of this drama. I thought he was really endearing in it. I remember when Temptation of Wolves was being promoted, Kim Jung Hwa appeared on a show with Kang Dong Won and Jo Hansun, having teamed up as a couple for both actors before the movie.

      • 3.1.1 alua

I watched it, but didn’t finish it because I couldn’t find a site where all the episodes worked. But I liked what I saw (can’t remember how far I got).

        • 3.1.1.1 Ani

It’s on Dramafever.com. But if you’re not in the North America area, than mysoju.com (but they have missing videos a lot now for that drama).

I always watch that drama every once in a while when I want to see Kang Dong-won get jealous over his girl over and over again. Hahaha. It gets pretty dramatic when it comes to Dada’s sister’s story, but it gives us another reason to love the main heroine. Truthfully, it’s not the kind of kdrama I like (cute, fluffy, funny is what I like), but every once in a while, I feel the urge to rewatch some of my favorite episodes from One Percent. Heh.

          • 3.1.1.1.1 urbanscrappy

Evry so often I have a Kang Dong Won weekend which kicks off withmy highlights of 1% of Anything. It’s not great but I love his jealous ranting.
I have to concur with all the posters who’re mentioning Kim Soo Hyun. that would be dream casting.
This takes me back to the days when I used to haunt Soompi’s forums for weekly translations of Guiyeoni’s stories. Good times! Although I remember the original story ended very differently from the film.

      • 3.1.2 SKIGV

Then I’m the second person you know who knows about 1POA, I’m in the middle of the drama, but I love Lee Jae In (Kang Dong Won)!!!! x3

  4. bluemoon

Freaking awesome! I love TOW. Can’t wait for this!

  5. rianna

KANG DONG WON WAS OSM IN THIS MOVIE!!! LET IT BE KIM SOO HYUN PLEAAASE!

    • 5.1 biankoy

      ohmyeffinggaaaaaaaaaaaad! you are so right!
KIM SOO HYUN!!! even if it’ll break me to see him in that role, he is just perfect for it.

    • 5.2 Kaleido

KSH will be great! But then again… i do like the duo in WBDS… should have U and DS reunion… but may be a little too soon…

    • 5.3 Jomo

KSH should always be a first choice.

      WHERE IS HE?

  6. ems

OMFG! I am so excited for this remake! Read a lot of Guiyeoni’s works, and though, this isn’t my favorite, I’m glad it’s getting more attention. Heehee. The movie version did cut out some content of the novel version, so, I hope that the drama version will include those and more.

    • 6.1 Jenn

Ah, I’m so jealous that you’re able to read the books haha. I can understand most of a drama without subtitles, but my Korean isn’t good enough to read a whole novel :(

      • 6.1.1 lambayyx

there’s translations of a few of guiyeoni’s novels floating around the internet, so even if you can’t read korean, you can still read her novels.

  7. Birdie

Not a fan of remake, as we know the storyline. How many high school, coming of age teenage drama can one watch-this theme has been done so many times.

  8. L

Was not a big fan of the film but I’m finding that the drama might have more promise? Not saying the film was horrible. I just didn’t resonate so well with it because it was, like others have mentioned, definitely fast-paced and lacked some depth.

But definitely up for some teenage romance drama. We haven’t had a good one in a long while, haven’t we?

  9. Noelle

I never made it through the movie. I got like less than half an hour in. I got fed up with something that led me to reading a summary of it which immediately put me off the movie for good. I won’t be watching the remake. BTW where is Kang Dong Won? Is he still in the military?

    • 9.1 biankoy

yep..sad to say. but hopefully next year he’ll come back to us <3

  10. 10 darknesseyes

my god He Was Cool was the worst movie ever

    • 10.1 bd2

Maybe not the worst, but definitely up there.

ToW was barely adequate as entertainment.

It’s kinda funny how being in 1 big hit can make someone a big star.

KDW isn’t really good-looking (aside from his features, his features are a bit asymmetrical), but he has this image of being cool and good-looking (now, Jo Han Seon is goodlooking).

I did like KDW in the comic farce “Too Beautiful to Lie” with Kim Ha Neul, even if he did overact a bit.

    • 10.2 biankoy

know what.. after watching Endless Love with
Song Seunghoon, I swore to hate Song Seunghoon till kingdom come, but He was cool made him bearable for me. Yes at times it was stupid and bordering on annoying. but that last scene, the kindergarten kiss, tugged my heart and will forever remain the sweetest kiss ever.

    • 10.3 danna

it was the second worst I’ve ever seen only after Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti which is the worst…..I remember laughing (really hard) through some of the OTT plot points….I watched it for Jang Geun Suk and Jang Ui Chul….so no big surprise when I found out that they were both from the same internet writer….and I’m certainly not surprised that she got criticism for the quality of her works….After these two I made a conscious decision to stay far away from ToW which I hear is actually slightly better though….so yeah definitely not looking forward to this drama but this is just my opinion

      • 10.3.1 Alvina

Whatever happened to Jang Ui Chul? It’s like he dropped off the face of K-ent planet after Boys Over Flowers.
I remember seeing him on Star Golden Bell and thinking that he was quite charming…

        • 10.3.1.1 danna

lol I remember asking the same question somewhere a few months back…I thought that maybe he had gone tot the military but there was no news of that either

    • 10.4 bd

I’d throw films like “Seducing Mr. Perfect”, “100 Days with Mr. Arrogant” and the like into the mix.

  11. 11 Alixana

I really wanted to like this movie. I really did. But it’s just so nonsensical. My IQ dropped to room temperature by the time I finished watching this. Same as with Koizora – everyone loves it, everyone cried, it’s everyone’s favorite movie – and I couldn’t stop rolling my eyes at the lameness of the plot.
I did like Dong Won tho

    • 11.1 mina

now i feel like my IQ is low since i enjoyed this movie.

    • 11.2 anna

I agree with you on Koizora, though TOW was one of my first tastes at kmovie, I didn’t know what to expect. I liked it because of KDW. I only remember him most of all in that movie. LOL

  12. 12 churasan

This is one of my favorite Korean movies. Although it’s not one of the most “thought-provoking” movies, I found it enjoyable as it was very straightforward and simple romance. I loved the cast too. I would definitely watch the drama version because a lot more could be added to make the story well-rounded. I’m also interested who they will choose for the drama – hopefully they will get real good up and coming actors instead of the “idols turned recent actors” type.

  13. 13 win

Goodness, I saw this movie so long ago…the plot is a bit hazy. I remember it starting out pretty good but turned bad really fast. I think I was really turned off by the sibling love theme…if my memory serves me right.

  14. 14 crzycpl

OMO … coincidence! I just watched this movie last night and found out that the female lead LCA was leading up the new Flower Ramyun story with JIW.

But back to the movie – yes, it was a little choppy with no real explanation for a lot of things. However, it did make me cry in the end. Hopefully the drama will be a little bit different because we are in 2011 and we’re beyond the cliches of “Stairway to Heaven” … if you get my drift.

What has JHS been up to?

  15. 15 Thatgirl

Who will be the next Kang Dong won, thats an interesting thought…..

Hrm… I really hated the movie, Uber controlling boyfriend, half brother in love with half sister… heroine was… kinda… stupid…

But, I did always feel that instead of a movie, Temptation of Wolves really should have been a drama. I thought the movie fit the characteristics of a Kdrama more, minus the super controlling boyfriend.

Hrm… I’ll make my decision on whether or not to watch, as production gets underway. I have a feeling I might just like it more as a drama, especially if they change the boyfriend’s characteristics.

(I swear, if the brother wasn’t the brother, I would have wanted the heroine to end up with him.)

    • 15.1 Anvesha

From your description, I would not be a big fan of this movie/drama. Stupid heroines are something I can’t stand!

I always thought this movie starred Kang Dong Won as the lead for some reason.. I never watched it (may be because the poster looks strangely melancholic for a teenage romance, or something.)

  16. 16 Eliza Bennet

This film was not one I liked. The incest thing killed all the romance for me.

But I did like He Was Cool as as film. Why don’t they make it a drama?

    • 16.1 jenny

i agree…the movie was just…empty..there was no content and it was just melodramatic emotions manuavered to make you cry….although KDW was pretty awesome but that was about it…

yeah he was cool was really good…i teared up from so much laughter hahah

    • 16.2 girlatsea

I’m glad I’m not the only one. This movie was terrible and the incest thing made it 10x worse.

  17. 17 Banu

OMO.. I’m sooo exited. I loved and cried so much while watching Romance of Their Own aka Temptation of Wolves, it was my first Korean movie ever that made me fell in love with the Korean movie industry and Kang Dong Won of course!!

As a drama I’m sure I gonna love this and cry as much I cried in the movie cause we all know the ending TT I’m looking forward to see as a drama and how who they gonna pick as our 3 lead hero’s also I liked that cubby girl she was so naive and the boys where awesome and cute.

I hope they can find natural beauties like Kang Dong Won, Jo Han Sun and Lee Chung Ah.
Not that I hate new actors I can name a few for this role but I hope and think it will be a new face and talented guys like the original ones.. Well Fighting!!! love this project I’m on board!!

  18. 18 mina

this is one of those movies that stayed with me for a long time. Maybe coz i watched it my adolescent years, where you know, you have that fantasy where two of the most popular guys are vying for your attention…lol I’m looking forward for the drama!

  19. 19 Kender

I loathed so much about this movie, but the ending still made me cry buckets when I watched it way back when..

They already turned it into a musical (using Kpop songs a la Mamma Mia), so why not make it a drama, I guess…

Although there will never be another Kang Dong-won. IMPOSSIBLE.

  20. 20 Marry

oh my God. Kang Dong Won.

  21. 21 VV

OMG! I can’t wait for this to happen. I was a fan of Guiyeoni’s books ever since high school!

Trust me you guys, this story was MADE to be made into a drama. I was not happy with the movie at all.

  22. 22 conan

Am I the only one who didn’t find this movie any good? I was bored to tears watching it and was quite shocked a lot of people actually liked it. Even Kang Dong-won couldn’t save the day. I realized he’s hot long after watching the movie. I’m not sure if they can make that boring 2 hours into something more magnetic, times 10 the amount of time. I am curious to who is going to play in it though.

  23. 23 anna

haha omg, took them long enough! this movie was made for kdrama. it has all the cliches. TOW was also the movie that made me fell in love with KDW. my heart broke for him (the character).

  24. 24 hahhah

Love the kissing scene is this film!!Because its my first time to see one n a Korean Movie…eheheheh..:)

  25. 25 nazz

    Kang Dong Won .. please ……. <3

  26. 26 Endroine

    NO WAY! =D yaaay i love the movie!! I hope the drama will be good too, but awh different actors that will be something to get used to ;-;

  27. 27 Lahlita

    Kim Soo-hyun! KIM SOO-HYUNNNNN!!!!!!!

Ahem, sorry. I just really like Kim Soo-hyun. The eyes, they burn like fire!

  28. 28 fuzzymogwai

    oo kim soo hyun…

    totally agree =D

isnt this also a musical running right now? i thot that was interesting…

sounds like a cute fun movie to watch! but does it have enough…substance to sustain a whole drama? keke we will has to wait and see!

    *anticipating

  29. 29 danna

O man…I hated Guiyeonni’s other two novel adaptations…..so far fetched and cliched and I know the story for this one was kinda like that too so I dont think I’ll watch..also I feel like the setup of this drama is a bit old-fashioned and would’ve been more appealing in the early 2000′s (Winter Sonata, Stairway to Heaven)..so remaking it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me..so is this going to be a new cable drama as well???

  30. 30 luvrema82

Hope they will remake He Was Cool into drama!

  31. 31 Kes

Are they going to import any of the actors from the musical? SuJu’s Ryeowook is one of the stars, and I’ve been dying to see him acting more since ‘Attack on the Pin-Up Boys’. That movie was harmlessly dumb, but he was genuinely awesome in it. He has amazing instincts and comic timing.

  32. 32 Caroline

I’m kind fo excited! This is one of my favourite Korean movies of all time….I think I’m going to pull up my DVD again ^^Naturally I’m weary of who they’re going to cast because in my opinion, this movie is somewhat a classic to the Korean genre. But I’m still excited!! Can’t wait! :P

  33. 33 mnstpdu08

I’m one of the anomaly, because I really, really liked it. I just watched a month or so again. However, I agree with people that there were missing pieces which a drama could definitely fill. But please, please change the girl’s here. JHS and KDW were hot (especially JHS), so I hope they find guys as hot as them. KSH would be awesome!

  34. 34 Marg

I tried watching TOW waaayyy back when I first got introduced to kdramas/kmovies, but I could only manage to get through the first 30 minutes or so before I gave up and fast forwarded to the end. I don’t remember too much about the movie, but I do recall that I thought it was rather boring, cliched, superficial, and more than a little absurd at times. Plus, I’ve always been skeeved out by incest and pseudo-incest romances.

  35. 35 Hong

And I freaking die, I love the movie to bit. I read the story (translated version online) So I guess I can’t wait for the drama now. I hope they cast two hot guys (like they did for the movie) YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY OMGOMGOGM

  36. 36 crazedlu

    PLEASE. CAST. WELL.

if they get some sorry dudes and leading lady, i’ll probably pull out of this one, but if they get some ace actors, i’m innnn.

    pleeease.

  37. 37 Jomo

Do not like the blood brother sister thing…It is too creepy.
I do like the fauxcest thing – I like how they mess with you on that one so you think they are going there, but then they don’t.

I think maybe they will have to script adjust – that conflict du jour has had its day.

    • 37.1 Alvina

Not necessarily. It’s still used in different, more subtle, forms (see: A Thousand Kisses drama)

  38. 38 Alvina

Jo Han Sun and Kang Dong Won has such manly charisma in this drama despite playing high school students. Their bromance, and their dedication to the roles made it a classic. I think Kang Dong Won was particular recognized more because his role had layers, and had all the shades of typical k-ent tragedy haha.

Seriously though, I wonder who they’ll find to match the charisma of these two because they MADE the movie for me. Particularly Jo Han-Sun’s role because drawing audience appeal to his character type is very difficult…

Good luck to the casting directors :D I dont envy them.

  39. 39 joonni

Loved this movie. Had some great cinematography and just loved the tone of it. Kang Dong Won just lit up the screen too.

I’m excited about the drama but whoever is picked is going to have to “live up” to the Kang Dong Won thing.

  40. 40 Yer Vang

Woo-hooo I loved the movie. High hopes for the drama :)

  41. 41 Lucille

You guys are not alone. I LOVE 1% of Anything. It’s not the best drama, but there is something about it that grabs me. I’ve watched it too many times to count.

  42. 42 Rachel

i really like kang dong won here so much.. watch it many times…. he’s so cute here.. its nice to be young again….

  43. 43 silliesunshine

i love the movie … kdw was awesome … maybe he’ll come back in time to star in his role again!

  44. 44 Snikki

Didn’t like this movie at all! I watched this with my boyfriend, and we had the same reaction: “WTF?!?” It took years before I can convince him to watch another Korean movie with me.

  45. 45 Joy

My first full length korean film ever! This brings back so many memories.

  46. 46 purplebasket

This has been one of the movies I just passed by and remembered really well because of the bewildering twist. While I like the high school and gangster theme, I’m a little apprehensive because I like them in the rom-com genre, not in a drama. Because dramatic is what this one’s going to be, what with the incest and stuff. They need deep actors for this that’s for sure with very expressive eyes. I’m not really sure if I’m excited but will definitely watch the first episodes.

  47. 47 what122

my fav movie , but mostly for kdw , his role as taesung might be twisted but sure left a deep impression in my mind , i dont think anyone will be able to top kdw in this role
i’m just disappointed in the female lead , i dont c what her appeal is for those 2 hot guys to be fighting over her

  48. 48 Tatyana

I was confused when I watched this movie. Is Kang Dong Wan falling in love with his sister? I was not sure how his character is related to lead actress character.

  49. 49 asianromance

Oh Temptation of the Wolves! I fell in love with Jo Han Sun’s jawline in this movie. I had read the translation of the internet novel back when I was like 18/19 and loved it to pieces. Guiyeoni’s other internet novels were great reads too. It’s strange to think a good portion of the writing was just emoticons. I really got into the stories and the characters just leaped off the page/computer screen. However, I’m not so sure if I would like those kind of stories now that I am older. It’s like how Twilight should really be read and experienced when I was a teen and would be more likely to think that stalkerish vampire Edward was hot. As an adult, I’m like ‘dude, Edward. stop being so creepy. and get some bronzer’.

I wonder how the drama will play out. Hopefully it won’t be a 16 episode drama. 16 episodes of angst is too much. I feel like the story would be better served by an 8-10 episode series.

  50. 50 Jaykah

I LOVE this movie! One of my favs. I will definitely be keeping an eye on this as long as the cast doesn’t dissapoint. Not trying to be a hater or anything but please please please give some young rookie actors the chance instead of making the leads idol-actors..
I know I’ll get over it if that’s the case but I’d love to see an aspiring actor/actress get the chance to shine.
