Running Man: Episode 209

The past meets present in this Triangle Mystery where ajusshi-dols go head to head against some of the popular idols of today. Get ready for ninety minutes of reminiscing about old times, rolling around in the mud, and flying through the air, as our teams duke it out to solve the mystery and escape this world of endless triangles. Even without the constant Kpop references, which are a-plenty in this episode, there’s enough hilarity to entertain you by the end.

EPISODE 209. Broadcast on August 17, 2014.

It’s an Idol Extravaganza today as we’re introduced to our guests right off the bat:

  • New Idols (led by Haha): Taemin (SHINee), Soyou (SISTAR), Kai and Sehun (EXO);
  • Original Idols (led by Jong-kook): Moon Hee-jun (H.O.T.), Eun Ji-won (Sechskies), Danny Ahn (g.o.d.), and Chun Myung-hoon (NRG);

After their respective dance intros, Taemin is asked to show off his popping moves again (“It’s as if you’re suddenly surprised!”), which the cast immediately imitates. Not with the same kind of finesse as dancing machine Taemin, of course.

Danny seems frozen in shock from the hydraulics stage lift, and man, I just realized that Turbo’s “Black Cat” was released nineteen years ago (1995). Coming close is the iconic H.O.T. hit “Candy” (1996), which gets everyone dancing. Ah, nostalgia—these songs will never get old for me.

Hee-jun’s still got the moves, including the power-racer butt dance which still looks painful. Nowadays, these four original idols have come together as a project group (HJgR, which also included another former H.O.T. member, Tony An) composed from their idol group names of yore. You can count on these guys to know everything about variety and the entertainment industry like the backs of their hands.

Unsurprisingly, their physical stamina isn’t like what it used to be, as they huff and puff off the stage. At the criticism for not jumping straight up onto the stage like the young’uns, Jong-kook defends that in their day, they had to jump forward. Jae-suk: “Then all of you should have done that.”

Jong-kook is quick to point out other stage names from yesteryear, like Haha (Jikiri, a three-member boyband from 2001 that later disbanded) and Gary (X-Teen, a hiphop group which also included LeeSsang member Gil). Speak for yourself bandana-wearing Spartakooks, heh.

Hee-jun explains how his stylist had to do a literal patch job to assemble his wardrobe today. He couldn’t get actual goggles in time either, so he had to cut and paste a pair on a visor. “Wouldn’t SM Entertainment at least have bought these goggles [for us]?!”

Ji-won defends that his shirt is the standard one that office workers wear, adding that you can see his undershirt (or “running shirts” in Korean) in this. Hee-jun tries to play off the pun, saying that he can wear a running shirt on this show, only to take it back moments later.

He bursts, “If you dress me like this, then my jokes are from the nineties too!” He’s still better dressed than Myung-hoon, who I think actually came wearing PJs.

Our remaining Running Idols (Jae-suk, Suk-jin, Kwang-soo, Monday Couple) make up the third team. Our three teams will engage in a Triangle Mystery Race, and the first team to solve the mystery and escape the locked gates will be today’s winners.

At the mention of triangles, Haha throws in a corny joke about triangular kimbap. He claims it was an attempt to make the Original Idols’ cheesy humor look better, but they snap back at him instead. “Even I wouldn’t have made that joke!” “I’m done for and never appear on this show again if I respond to that joke!”

The first-generation idols reminisce about old times, and Jong-kook motions to Hee-jun to illustrate how those difficult times have affected them. Hee-jun doesn’t miss a beat, though: “I was so tired back then, that I keep swelling up. This won’t come off!”

He’s surprised when health nut Jong-kook advises him to eat more (healthy) food. “You want me to eat more food?!”

Ha, Hee-jun still has those cut-out goggles stuck on his shirt, which he claims it’s because his stylist thought it’d be a pity to only have them only for the opening. When Jae-suk wonders just how all of them appeared together today (since some of their groups were rivals back in the day) Ji-won answers that they come when Jong-kook calls them.

It’s because Jong-kook is the senior sunbae out of this bunch (since Turbo debuted in 1995). Even Hee-jun, who’s been in the industry for 18 years now, is still considered his hoobae. All those years dancing and jumping have eventually caught up with these ajusshi-dols (Ajusshi Idols or A-dols): take Ji-won for instance, whose shoulder pain he claims is a result from long-term popping moves.

So then the first-generation idols are quick to advise Taemin that this paiiiiinnnn is what awaits him a decade or so from now. And Hee-jun adds, “In 18 years’ time, you could end up round-faced like me!” Omg, I kinda love how these ajusshi-dols are relentlessly teasing the youngsters about what their futures might look like.

The first game is a version of water basketball where the teams will score points by shooting the ball to their respective teammates standing on the center platform. However, if the ball is caught by a different team, the point goes to the catcher’s team (e.g., if Soyou catches a ball thrown by Jong-kook, the New Idols get a point).

Nearly everyone in Haha’s lineup admits to their lack of basketball skills (Soyou asks Haha: “Do you know how to play?”) When Danny realizes that the catcher’s job is the most important, Jae-suk counters that they just need to do whatever Jong-kook tells them to do.

The ajusshi-dols are the only ones not brainstorming (Danny: “Let’s at least pretend that we’re talking,”) if only because they’re afraid of Jong-kook as much as anyone else. They’re reluctant about getting into the pool too, and I love how Danny cries over how he got his hair all spiffy at the salon this morning.

Hee-jun yelps when he gets in, surprised at seeing the water come up to his chest, “I didn’t know that I’d be shorter than I thought!” Ji-won isn’t afraid to pull rank against his hoobaes, ordering them back to the starting point. They’re all grumpy already, and it’s hilarious.

Haha gets possession of the ball, but it slips out of Soyou’s hands. A little later, Suk-jin throws it towards Ji-hyo and capsizes moments later. The ball still out in the open, Jong-kook grabs it and Kwang-soo tries to beat it out of his arms.

It’s utter chaos out in the pool by now, and Hee-jun remarks that this game is more like rugby instead of basketball. Jong-kook’s trying to fight off seven people by now, telling them NOT to pull down his pants. The ball bounces off a couple more times and slips through more fingers, while Hee-jun desperately asks the girls that they don’t resort to pushing ’cause slipping scares him.

Danny eventually gets ahold of the ball, getting just enough time to throw it before he gets overturned. Too bad Hee-jun falls in while trying to grab it, but it doesn’t matter since the ball flies out anyway.

Thanks to some brisk passes, Hee-jun grabs the ball by the tips of his fingers, but it slips and so does he. It’s nice that the ladies help him back up each time he falls in. After another chaotic minute, Myung-hoon gets another chance to shoot… and it ends up in Soyou’s arms. Somebody gonna get a hurt real bad’ from Jong-kook.

Aw seeing those Love Letter clips again remind me of Myung-hoon’s heodang status which still follows him today. Jong-kook throws Myung-hoon off, then lashes out at Hee-jun: “Get down from there, you fatty!”

Hee-jun gets visibly upset by that and yells that his mother’s watching this broadcast. He refuses to move, sitting there like a petulant child. “Even yo-yo [dieting] is better than that!” Aw, I can’t say that I blame him—not everyone can look like Jong-kook twenty years in the biz.

Jong-kook defends that it’s an adorable nickname, but Hee-jun is still upset: “I don’t have to be cute, so don’t call me that!” So they settle for Moon Yo-yo instead.

In the second round, Soyou knocks her opponents off but still fails to catch the ball. Ji-won comes close, and in another end of the pool, Haha is caught behind his platform.

There’s no such thing as rules anymore, as everyone pushes each other out of the way left and right. OMG, did Hee-jun just BITE Haha’s butt? Like chomp down on it? He apologizes, but it’s clear that this game is quickly getting out of hand.

A little later, Ji-hyo gains possession and throws the ball. It lands in Soyou’s arms again giving her team another point and the win, just as Kwang-soo falls into the pool. From this angle, it looks like Jong-kook gave him a little push, but Soyou still feels sorry and gives Kwang-soo an apologetic hug.

Myung-hoon gets in more hot water by acknowledging Jong-kook’s foul, but to his luck, the remaining teams duke it out for second and third place. Tae-min has initial possession, which Hee-jun—as his SM sunbae—uses to his advantage: “I’m Kangta’s hyung! I’ll call him to make sure you get paid on time!” (H.O.T’s Kangta is currently a creative director at SM Entertainment.)

The match itself wraps up as quickly as it begins, as Kwang-soo catches the ball in less than a minute. And so, the New Idols gain two hints, and the Running Idols pick up one.

I like how the show’s playing all of the ajusshi-dol’s hit singles today, and Hee-jun is sporting perfectly dried hair again when everyone regroups shortly afterwards. He gets annoyed at the mention of how the ajusshi-dols were once physically fit, too. “Let’s not talk about the past! Don’t you see we’re still alive and kicking?!”

Then Jae-suk shares a funny story how Suk-jin and his facial misting spray: Big Nose Hyung had closed his eyes waiting for the spray… and Jae-suk spit-sprayed into his face instead. Hahaha, and also ewww.

Their second game is a 1:1:1 nametag-ripping-wrestling match, and the teams will choose between three different elements: water, sand, and mud. And as luck would have it, their first match will take place in the mud. Our competitors: Kai vs. Suk-jin vs. Hee-jun.

Jong-kook and Haha issue different strategies to their teammates, which basically boil down to power vs. deceit. Hahaha, how apt. Suk-jin’s feeling pretty confident at the start and tells maknae Kai to take a break while he’ll give Hee-jun a mud shower.

Hee-jun grabs hold of Suk-jin’s nametag, but the mat-hyung is faster, to everyone’s surprise. Suk-jin isn’t going to go easy on the idol either, and then they both fall into the mud. Who will eliminate the other first?

It’s Kai who comes out victorious; he adorably slips from the mud, but plays it off. With the New Idols advancing to the finals, the remaining two teams decide to duke it out in the mud. In this all-kill elimination round, the first to hit the mud on their backs will lose.

Jong-kook and Jae-suk are up first, and as expected, Jong-kook lifts the Grasshopper up as soon as the whistle blows. Then he dips Jae-suk’s head into the mud. Once, twice, then for a third before finally letting go. HAHAHA.

Jae-suk is told to use a nearby water hose to wash off, but that’ll do little to erase the embarrassment he’s just faced. “Who will wipe off the mud from my heart?!” Enraged, Jae-suk throws himself into the mud pit, only to go for another dip when the water hose doesn’t work. Oh man, his ragequit is both sad and hilarious.

Gary is Jong-kook’s second victim as he’s dropped into the mud. I doubt that trickling water hose does much, but on the bright side: it’s top-quality mud, so it’s good for your skin?

Suk-jin has fun talking a big game before the start, so Jong-kook gives him an upgraded mud shower, dipping Suk-jin’s head into the mud and swirling it around like a paintbrush. Jae-suk offers to wash him off and gives him another spit-spray. Ha.

Jong-kook lifts Kwang-soo up from the water, but our Giraffe manages to use his long legs to his advantage, wrapping one around Jong-kook’s. He lets gravity do most of the work as they topple over, but it’s Kwang-soo who falls face-first into the mud.

Neither one of them has fallen on their backs, so the match continues. Kwang-soo gives Jong-kook a wedgie (owww) before getting thrown into the mud face-first over and over and over again. Kwang-soo puts up a good fight until he finally gives in.

Last up is Ji-hyo, and the rules are reversed in this match (i.e., first to go down on their back wins). Ji-hyo holds on and punches Jong-kook in the chest before she bites down on his pec. Owwww. That has got to hurt, but it works in her favor.

She calls out Hee-jun next, and he doesn’t let her fall down that easily. He calls her pretty, which sparks Monday Boyfriend Gary’s jealousy, and then Hee-jun falls down first. With that, his team advances and when Hee-jun gives Ji-hyo a little hug, Gary flies down into the pit.

So it’s the New Idols vs. Original Idols in the finals, which will take place in the sand pit. Danny and Kai are up first, and though Kai goes in for the initial attack, he’s the one taken down. Guess they weren’t kidding about Danny’s wrestling skills from Dream Team.

Our two MCs Jong-kook and Jae-suk bicker back and forth per usual, like how Jong-kook says he was always wrestling in his spare time at school. Jae-suk throws back: “That’s probably because you found it fun!” Haha: “Because you’d win! You’d win!”

Danny is up against Taemin next, and both keep a low center of gravity. Suddenly Danny goes in for the charge, but Taemin stands firm. He holds out for another few attacks, but then Danny lifts his leg and sends Taemin into the sand. Whoa.

The Original Idols pick up two hints thanks to Danny’s victories, then it’s time to move to the next location. And yes, Hee-jun washed his hair again. Heh.

After discussing at length how all the idols, both young and old, are afraid of Jong-kook, the cast takes a minute to promote Taemin’s solo single “Danger.” Hee-jun is genuinely impressed by his hoobae’s dance skills, and tells him how he’s glad that Taemin’s first solo isn’t a rock song, unlike himself. Aww, but I liked your rock singles!

It turns out that Taemin and Kai have been friends since they were trainees. Jae-suk says their story was so moving that his soup was salty from his tears. Lol. Danny says at least the young’uns got to eat prior to their debut, and Hee-jun turns that line into a comedic moment: “I’ve eaten too much.”

Nearly everyone is sopping wet prior to their third game: a pebble game. One team member from each team will be given a pebble to reveal (or not). Then each person will guess the total number of pebbles in all their hands from 0 to 3, and the teams that guess wrong will go flying into the pool.

It’s a battle of wits between the three teams—in the first round, after Haha and Ji-hyo makes their guesses, Ji-won contemplates between 0 and 3. He chooses 0, and now it’s time to show their hands.

Ji-hyo win with her correct guess of 1, which means Kai and Jong-kook go flying. She’s the first to guess in the second round of 2, and those guesses are followed by 3 (Ji-won) and 1 (Haha). It’s 2, and Ji-hyo wins again.

Ji-hyo guesses correctly again for the third time in a row, leaving everyone amazed. She takes a minute to contemplate before making another guess, which prompts Ji-won to ask if she can just tell with her eyes.

She guesses 3, which gives her away for holding onto a pebble of her own. Hee-jun broadcasts that this means it has to be higher than 1, and everyone’s like, Well, duh. Ji-won guesses 2, which forces Haha to choose 1.

Now’s the moment of truth, and this time it’s Ji-won who guesses correctly. They discover the pebble on his lap, though, and the cast argues to review the tapes. Sure enough, Ji-won had thrown the rock into his lap just before showing his hand.

In the end, the Running Idols get the win, all thanks to the all-knowing (or extremely lucky) Ji-hyo.

Our teams gather together again for their final mission, where they’ll solve the Triangle mystery and escape the locked gates once and for all. The hint count: New Idols (3); Running Idols (3); and Original Idols (2). And the complete puzzle: Escape by making nine triangles using five dots and seven lines.

Using their noggins for puzzles is the cast’s least favorite thing to do, but what can you do when victory is on the line. The teams get to work using their acquired hints to their advantage. Taemin declares that he’s solved the puzzle, but his method produces only three triangles.

The Original Idols manage to figure out seven triangles, while the Running Idols figure out eight triangles before running into a dead-end. The New Idols wonder if they should sneak a peek at the other teams. Soyou peeks at the Running Idol’s puzzle and takes the intel back to her team.

Meanwhile, the Original Idols keep coming up short with eight triangles, and their semi-loud brainstorming voices can be overheard by the others. The Running Idols use that to their advantage, but sadly they come up with eight triangles instead. I can see how this is one of those puzzles where the more you stare at it, the more the shapes can deceive the eye.

At one point, VJ Kwon-ryul starts cracking up watching the Running Idols think of new ways and fail over and over again. Haha starts over by constructing a star (Byul) which his also his wife’s name. Aw.

All the teams start over by building three triangles with one cross-line, and when the Running Idols come up with eight triangles again, they readjust some lines. That successfully gives them nine triangles, and the Running Idols escape the gates first as today’s victors.

In an epilogue, we rewind back to the flying chairs to explain why nearly everyone was wet prior to the third game. The cast had played a round of Ideal Type World Cup with Soyou, whose eliminated suitors went flying into the water.

Between Jong-kook vs. Kwang-soo vs. Haha in the final three, Soyou had ultimately chosen Jong-kook. Now that’s one refreshing send-off.

Thanks for the recap, gummimochi. You’re the best.
This episode is great. I like how RM combining strength, brains and entertainment together, feels like the old Running Man is back. And having theme is better than not, I mean some episodes just showed random guests and random “defeat-other-team” mission. I’m sorry but it’s kind of boring. Also, they picked the right guests this time.
I really don’t like the mud-wrestling mission. I mean it’s not funny at all when Jong Kook humiliated those four –Gary, Jae Suk, Suk Jin, Kwang Soo– so I really appreciated Ji Hyo when she bit him. And I totally agreed with Jae Suk said that Jong Kook made the wrestling mission boring cause he just using strength and Danny did the thing by using the real technique of wrestling.
The most important thing is SONG JI HYO ROCKS! She’s the ace in the episode, like how she bit Jong Kook and it’s really spectacular that she guessed right four times in a row at the flying chair mission. She’s really good in games like that (I remember when she won the sort of rock-paper-scissor game, also with the flying chair, four or five times in a row. I don’t really remember but Kim Soo Hyun was the guest on that episode). And can somebody tell me why is there always “Angry Bird” theme when it comes to Ji Hyo? I don’t really get it, and if I recall, I don’t remember in which episode it was started. I don’t even realize it until my friend told me about it.
Anyway I’m looking forward for future episodes like this. Running Man fighting!

Also hated the wrestling mission, wherein jong kook use RM members to sweep mud... I get him doing it for entertainment but someone should tell him when it is distasteful...

to jong kook die hard, don't get me wrong, this is not targeting him... i love all RM members, but they are also humans, sometimes not aware if the act is offensive. It's like when Kwang Soo was overdoing things that it's not funny anymore, but now he has mellowed, someone must have advice him

Never in one episode I have ever thought that Lee Kwang Soo was overdoing things. What I see, is a man who always sincerely tries his hardest for viewers. That's why Lee Kwang Soo is so popular abroad, everywhere he go, people would cheer his name. He has been in my country,Malaysia, for fan meeting, twice. His first meeting were crowded. But the second meeting was spectacle. His fans coming from all over the country, kids, teenagers, elders, the shopping complex felt like being canned with sardines. 5-6 people fainted from being overcrowded. From the shopping complex till the street, it were filled with his fans.

Mellowed or not, Kwang Soo is just a variety gold. You might think he was just an overacting gagman, but many loves him for what he is,and appreciate what he does.

like i have said in my other comment, people see things differently.

Having made that comment about kwang Soo does not mean i don't like him.... I like all RM members. And I don't dispute that Kwang Soo really works hard to make RM a fun show and that he has a large fanbase. But there was a time in the past that i find some of his acts to be overdone, and this is how i see it.

Let's just agree to disagree... Peace... :)

I have to agree with you (diana). What you said completely mirrored my thoughts. Kim Jong Gook, while I admire his strength, I also hate it when he keeps using this as his advantage over other members because it really makes the winner so predictable and it isn't fair on the other members since they have no chance at winning against his strength. So props to Jihyo who always seem to save her team from utter embarrassment of such an easy loss. I laughed hard at those mud wrestling scenes but also felt so horrible and upset for the other members who was made a laughing stock. I cried for them (I'm sensitive and emotional, eww) but overall, this episode was one of my favourite. OMO I love the 90s pop era! I can watch the opening again and again and not get bored of it, haha :)

No offense, Kim Jong Kook has barely won in the recent years of Running Man.

Others have wits, but he has strength, I don't really see much unfair about it?

KJK has had the image of being the strongest, if he mellows out, people call him useless, when he helps his team, people say he's going overboard.

Through all these years, despite age and injuries, he had to maintain that image of being the strongest, because that's what Korea knows him for. When people tease and call him names or just be disrespectful to him, he throws a fake tantrum, but in the end takes it all to the chin.

He is actually quite admirable, he's an asset to his teams, his friends call him a great buddy, yet his popularity isn't really THAT great.

I love this episode! So refreshing!
What I love most is the A-dols because they're so funny
Love HotSechGodRG!
But Sehun didn't get much air time in this episode. What a shame!

Kim Jong Kook was feared by many in RM, I wonder if it also the same in real life. He dipped Yoo Jaesuk and Ji Sukjin like tea bags and here I thought koreans are respectful of the elders. This episode actually shown how it applies though, we can see how quiet the new idols were no matter how noisy the running man team and forever idol team were. Gary-Jihyo, cut it out already! It has been so long, it looked fake! Or the fakeness has really shown now. Kang Gary is lovely but what is his stand in RM actually? He is not a gag and he does not even try hard anymore. Time to switch him I think, Moon Hee Jun can do it!

Do you mean where Gary was jealous?

Lol yeah that was pretty fake. Sometimes I wonder if they are given instructions from the PDs on how to react or such or...

Maybe they're already experts at the faking and it comes like second nature.

Seeing as they've been on the show for 4 years now, I'll say the latter.

They have reached their romantic peak way back ago and now they just pretending. Even that, they are already exhaust themselves and now they look lazy fake, not even try hard/almost look real fake anymore. That is what I am talking about. Song Jihyo is one fearless and fierce woman when it comes to win a challenge and this fake act with Gary cheapens her stand. She can do it without the monday couple scheme, but Kang Gary, what is left for him then?

Gary has many solo wins, more than KJK even. He's a dark horse, and his jokes are VERY funny, even without being part of the Monday Couple. I cannot believe you're asking this about him right now. His career is at its peak, and he is more popular than ever in SE Asia. For you to make such comments, it really makes me wonder if you've been watching the show properly. He's not called 'Sudden Commander' for no reason.

Reality show/variety show does not 100% reflect reality. Just like in drama where actors and actresses become different characters, in shows like RM, the casts have to put on "TV personalities" despite still using their real names. Even Yoo Jaesuk himself developed 3 different personas in 3 different shows - "Running Man", "Infinity Challenge", and "Happy Together". I think as viewers, we should automatically be aware that there might be a gap between TV shows and reality.

I never completely believe in Monday Couple. Are they cute together? Hell yeah! But I was not surprised when the news that Jihyo was dating emerged, because her "TV loveline" should not be confused with her real relationship. That being said, her chemistry with Gary is funny (or at least I find it so). I don't think they deliberately tried to fake it as we all know that she has a boyfriend. I think it is more like a joke now, about something that is not true but still funny to laugh at.

About Gary, I do agree that he does not try as hard as some other members (like Kwangsoo or Haha) but according to episode 176 he is wildly popular (only behind Yoo Jaesuk). I don't know why but apparently young Korean women really dig his style, which means viewership, so I am not surprised that he will remain in the cast until the end (unless he decides to withdraw himself). I personally don't mind him though as I do enjoy his chemistry with Jihyo :)

What? Without Gary or any other members of RM,it won't feel the same and the thing in runningman is not about their capability to do the job or their roles, I mean look at Suk Jin, he has been useless like since ep 1(only recently he shone), always being the first to the jail, but he still here, people still loves the impala!Rather it's the interactions between the cast that make it different from any other variety shows. They feels like a close family, and siblings.

I actually almost forgot about Ji Sukjin! In terms of do-anything-ness, Ji Sukjin is better than Gary, at least he can be the bottom of everyone's joke due to his age and personally, I don't mind watching graciously ageing ahjussi once in a while ;) While Kang Gary, well, hm... even the camera just passed him by (after editing, I mean) and almost every screen time of his is about how pretty Jihyo is, how lovely, how much in love. It will be lovely if that is true but the two of them are not even trying to look couple-y anymore.

It is completely okay for me if Gary stays until the 400th show (was it their contract until the 400th?) but it's time to change his act. I think they need to hire a writer special for writing Gary's act in each show.

I completely agree with you, RM has lost Lizzy and Jong Ki and we missed them a lot. I don't want RM to lose another member. Each member was unique and has their own personality which make RM last until today.

I was so glad that Garry did not resign around the ep 140 just like the rumour was. I know that Garry & Jihyo were never a real couple. But the drama of Monday Couple was so sweet and i never bored of it.

Let us enjoy the show no matter what kind of future episode will be...

See this ep is proof why I don't like idols being on RM. They care too much about preserving their fake image. All they do is fake laugh at a joke they don't understand (jokes from the older idols they don't understand), smile, and for the most time, shut up. They aren't funny and only do a serviceable job. Just look at Lee Guk Joo from a couple of weeks ago - that is the standard that RM guests need to reach. Funny, not afraid to make fun of herself, her size adds to her humour, etc.

that's because Lee Guk Joo is a comedian. that's how comedians are like. they are designed to make fools out of themselves.

and being an idol is exactly the reason why the new idols didnt act like the A-dols. both of the running man and a-dols have known each other for decades hence why they looked so comfortable with each other.
its an expected behaviour for th young ones when surrounded by their seniors. they did let loose in some of the scenes you know. so dont give them such a hard time. they did fairly well considering how intimidating the shoot could be with so many of their seniors around. even soyou and kai were feisty enough.

so just chill and not be so judgemental and calculative. enjoy the show. this episode is by far one the best ones in running man history.

@ailee

We will never make this people happy. If some one can not understand the difference between Lee Guk Joo (who is a comedian) with idols there is no point for us to try to explain to them why some guests work and why some don't. Or why idols are featured a lot more than other comedians, actors etc.

This is wrong on so many levels.

It doesn't matter whether you're a comedian, a rapper, an actor, an idol or whatever, anyone can make a fool out of themselves so others can laugh at them. That's what we want to see.

Look, the idols know what's coming for them when they appear on RM. They would have known there would be senior idols starring alongside them before they filmed or done mant prepararions. If they were uncomfortable being around so many seniors and find it intimidating, they shouldn't be appearing on the show. They choose if they want to appear on RM or not.

This isn't just referring to just this ep, but on many occasions, the idols may be quiet, timid and shy, and from tbe few words they speak, the RM cast laugh their heads off so as to make the idols feel more comfortable, and to make the show seem funnier. It's a nice gesture and I appreciate the effort, but they shouldn't have to do it. Idols need to be funnier.

Best RM ep in a long time? That must be why so many Koreans are watching it...

Unfortunately, being on variety shows mean more exposure and money, so I bet very few idols will refuse to be in one despite whether they think they are ready for it or not. The problem is whether the managing company is powerful enough to secure them a spot.

Obviously, RM PDs are bringing in idols to lure their fans to watch the show (and maybe to receive perks from entertainment companies?). I don't work for RM so I don't know if the financial benefit they receive compensates the quality of the show, but as a RM fan who are not interested in KPOP fandom, I also feel disappointed whenever idols join the show. Oh well, business is business. What can we do beside crossing our fingers for better guests next time?

I have to agree as well. However, I do enjoy some idols, though few they may be. I love Yong Hwa!!! He's absolutely wonderful and I hope he comes back soon :) Guest Ace of the show! Also, I really liked SNSD, particularly Jessica, Taeyeon, and Seohyun. Although Jessica's appearance with Eun Ji Won was lackluster, episodes 63 and 64 were especially enjoyable. Some people thought Jessica annoying but I thought her personality and quirks with Gary really shines and benefited the content of the episodes. Taeyeon was great with Haha and LOL Seohyun is so competitive and the weird little things about her are hilarious! Overall, many idols are there just for visuals and exposure but YongHwa and SNSD imo are really great! Ohh, almost forgot Big Bang haha. Daesung yay!!!

I agree. Just because a person is an idol doesn't mean they should be cut any slack. If you're on a variety programme you should have the responsibility to entertain and bring something for the audience. It's not wrong for audiences of this programme to expect certain things from guests too.

Some of them just have a personality as dry as plaster. It's not their fault since they can't help it but it should be acknowledged that they are not suitable for this type of programme. No one can be great at everything. They may be good at dancing and singing, and it's not a shame to say they are not good at comedy type of entertainment. These people should play to their strengths instead.

Some of the idols are great thou. IIRC there is Bora and Dohee who left a positive impression.

The problem is w/ the newbie/younger idols who generally don't feel comfortable/confident engaging in the verbal banter that more established/veteran entertainers, including older idols, do.

There are only a few younger idols (such as Sun-hwa of Secret) who have the outgoing personality and comedic talents to do well on variety shows.

This is getting really tiring. If you don't like what Running Man is doing. Do not watch. Simple as that. Stop trolling for attention.

If you are going to comment critically about their production then comment in away is smart, insightful and constructive.

Save yourself some rage and bitterness by not watching.

I actually agree. There are far too many guests. This year RM isn't as great as the past years and I am actually at the tip of dropping RM on my watch list. I love the casts and they have great chemistry. I really wish the PD would do more episodes with ZERO GUESTS. I, especially, hate idols as guests. The only exception of idols are Shinhwa and the older idols (aka the blue team of this episode). They don't care about their image and they bring their A-game as well as jokes. The new idol for this episode were boring, except Soyou.

Without the blue team, I would drop this episode. The games weren't even that entertaining. The only fun part that made me laugh were the jokes between Running Man and the blue team. The other team sucks.

I don't really agree, but I understand where Looper is coming from. RM Members have enough chemistry by themselves.

But previously, I think there were more eps with just the Running Man members because I feel that the production team wanted the viewers to see each member's variety trait. It was sort of establishing a "character" for each RM member and drawing laughs from that.

RM has now gone on for about four years now and the RM nucleus has been formed quite well. So I think they can afford to bring in more guests to the show.

Of course there will be guests that have the variety trait and others that don't, but the great thing about RM is that it is such a big deal in Korea that actors/actresses who usually do not appear in variety shows get invited! I think that is pretty refreshing in itself.

They hardly invite actors/actresses. It's usually idols. Almost every week, there is always an idol that isn't funny. I prefer actors/actresses as guests because they don't give a damn about their image.

despite what people are saying, running man is still one hell of a great show.

everyone just needs to take a chill pill and relax. it is a variety show that is supposed to make you feel happy. if you find it boring, dont watch it.

stop giving the PDs such a hard time and leaving nasty comments. they are doing amazing job, i bet these negative commentators cant even create new ideas for one episode so i think the production team deserves way more credit than this. heck, they even made it pass the 200 line. variety shows are bound to have repetitive themes anyways. so just calm down

Running Man, keep up the good work! fighting!!

I was really looking forward to this episode since I got into variety shows with Love Letter and X-Man. It really did feel like almost a reunion with so many familiar faces. Jae Suk, Jong Kook, HaHa and Suk Jin were all pretty well known back then and are still going strong but back in the day all those original idols were guests on their shows.

I was shocked by Ji Hyo's domination at that pebble guessing game. I thought Ji Won had that in the bag with his genius reputation from 2 Days 1 Night. I was actually a little disappointed with him--I was hoping to see him bust out some of those mind games he used to pull on the show. Myung Hoon was also a little disappointing. He didn't get much airtime and most of what he did was his old heudang character. Hee Jun really stole the show. I haven't seen this part of him on his other shows like Intimate Note.

I could do away with the wrestling segments. It's fairly obvious who will win (Jong Kook) especially against the cast. I thought Ji Hyo's bite was dangerous in that they have no hope of winning so they resort to cheating but that was way over the line. It's one thing to be deceitful like HaHa was teaching the idols but inflicting pain seems going too far, especially with the slippery conditions in the mud. That's just asking for an injury. Yes he's spartakooks but he's already had 2 back surgeries and he's not getting any younger.

The last brain teaser at the end was a real riot how everyone kept calling squares and rectangles triangles. I totally thought they had it a couple times too.

Jiwon never got the opportunity to choose first though. He immediately lost in rock, paper , scissors so he got the last place in choosing an answer.

Then from that moment Jihyo started getting the correct answers first hand so.. yeah, he never had the chance to begin with.

I think it's pretty awesome how he pulled that sneaking the pebble out of his hand. They may have lost but he still won in a sense that he managed to keep Heejun dry. RM Team won but they still got chucked out of the water.. No wonder Jiwon looked so happy and proud of his sneakiness.. XD I mean it's obvious someone would've caught up to that.. but he still had the variety sense to do something sneaky the last minute. And you'll see he was also aware that 3 pebbles was the correct answer, else he wouldn't have thrown that pebble away. It's just he never got to answer first.

The cunning of the Eun Choding. ♥

I agree!

After Haha won Rock Paper Scissors & chose a number, he wanted the number Jihyo chose next buy yeah Jihyo continued to choose 1st so no chance he'll win since Jihyo picked the right number each time.

That sneaking part Jiwon did was awesome. I didn't noticed it at all while watching the game. But his smile afterwards was fishy XD full of 'choding'ness.

i mean i was having a old RM marathon, and god. jong kook gets physically abused alot. mainly by ji hyo and kwangsoo. i sensed his pain, it looked like it really hurt....

I really loved the episodes. The guests were great and the games were entertaining and interesting especially the last one. I so know how our members dislike to use their brains so it was hilarious to see them raging LOL I gotta say I died with the caption saying "Brain and Mental Breakdown Symptoms" with Gary and Jae Suk losing their minds.
But really, the best thing about Running Man gotta be the interactions between the members. It's just so adorable seeing them together. Y'know, at the beginning, when they struggled, I loved the show but thought that the cast was just there because it was their job and all but y'know, after 200th episode, it's just so heartwarming to see them together because they have such an awesome chemistry together. And I mean all the members. It's such a joy when all of them are in a team because they work so well together.
In this episode, I loved when Gary, Kwang Soo and Suk Jin were giggling around, guessing if Haha had the peeble in his hands. I know, it sounds like a simple scene but their childlike expressions are just so amazing.

LOVE YOU RUNNING MAN <3 (i am being emotional because it's such a good day XD)

The mud game and the guessing pebble game were my favorite. I don't think I've laughed this much in a long time during an episode. Jae Suk and Jong Kook are hilarious.
For people that didn't like Jong Kook humiliating the other running man casts, I dont think you guys are really running man fans because if you've been watching the show from the beginning, you'll know that it is harmless and quite normal between the playful running man casts. It's what makes them so awesome together. They could not have picked a better combination of people than these 7 as running man casts. Hats off to the PDs and the whole running man crew.

like i have said, i have been with RM since day 1 and i know how close they are and care for each other and they are 1 family. But i still feel a certain uneasiness for those members that certain act has been done to.

Being in a family does not mean all acts are acceptable. they are humans after all. but it is what being a family is about. Even after all that happen, will still love each other.

It is not freaking out, it is just a statement on how one feels about a certain situation.

So many guests in this episode, it was a little hard to keep up. Out of all the guests, Hee-Jun really took the spotlight! He's perfect for variety as he pokes fun at even himself for laughs. The warning to his hoobaes about getting chubby like him when they get older KILLED ME.

With regards to the wrestling, I generally hit fast forward, especially if I know Spartakooks is participating. The outcome is guaranteed and I just don't enjoy seeing the RM members tossed around.

Ji-Hyo showed why she's ACE in the pebble game! Any games involving luck or guessing, she's almost sure to win. I was rooting for her to win it all but Ji-won sure was hilariously smooth at being sneaky! I didn't even notice or think he would throw his pebble out! He could rival even Kwang-So with his cheating ways! :P

Thanks for the recap! :) I really enjoyed this episode. The premise was a bit boring, but I loved the A-dols vs. new idols concept, and there were really golden interactions this week. I thought the wrestling game was hilarious (yes, it's old hat by now but it's still funny watching the others talk big but then get beat promptly to the ground by Spartakooks; also upsets when they do happen are amazing), and I love the way Ji-hyo proved herself the Ace by taking down Jong-kook. :'D I also enjoyed the pebble water chair game; she may have extraordinary luck, but Ji-hyo is also one sharp lady. The A-dols were fantastic, and I'd love to see them on the show again. Eun Ji-won cheating was pretty pro, and I would've loved to see more of his genius character that he played up on 1N2D. Hee-jun was also adorable and so so funny.

Let me preface by saying I love ji hyo. But I don't think her pebble guessing thing was totally all genius. Once she got the first one correct, she always had the choice of going first. Which gives her the option to choose any number she wanted. Whereas ji won and haha could only choose the leftover answers even if they know and wanted to guess the number ji hyo guessed. This 'first option' gave her more benefit. So while it was still impressive that she guessed four right in a row, she was helped by her having the first guess

The fact that she has the first guess, AND she gets it correct three times in a row, is a big deal itself.

You must also note that it was her who saw how the ninth triangle is formed, and that is why the team won. As mentioned by another commenter earlier, she can be very sharp when she needs to be, and that's how she wins so often.

Many people here are disappointed with the mud wrestling game. And totally dislikes JK tossing and playing the other RM around. Then you totally miss out the fun.
It might look disrespectful to you guys, but come on, its a variety show. They each have their own persona in RM. Like how Mr. Capable is a beast during strength base game. Like how Gary would be protective of Ji Hyo as his MC. Like Gwangsoo being the "fool" and the bullied maknae.
They sacrifice much for these personas oncam and offcam. JK received heavy bashing from early RM days till now with the way he treats Gwangsoo, still he keeps it on. Why? So that Gwangsoo will shine more and yes, Gwangsoo is acknowledge it and is thankful for that. Admit it or not. Asians tend to love underdogs more. Just like Chunderella in Family Outing.
Regarding with the guests vs purely RM members issue, its the Rm format in the 1st place. If RM will have more episodes by themselves, what makes them different from other show then? RM vs eg Infinity Challenge who seldom have guest and nearly spends 90% of the show with just the cast. Whats different then? You can practically see almost the same format and the same casts. Example the nametag ripping game which is a modified tail chasing game started by IC. Also YJS and Haha are also casts of the other program. So in the end, to keep RM's unique identity, they need guests.
Please dont be too harsh on judging the casts and staff working for RM. Isnt it better to encourage them more positively? Coz if the program ends, arent we all at the losing end?

Not the 1st time - Kookie has physically man-handled fellow RM members in ssireum, esp. YJS.

It is all in good fun (in his early variety days, Kookie was a man of few words and "respectful" to YJS, but now he is a variety veteran and part of his act is physically manhandling the other male members, including YJS.

People need to relax - YJS takes it in stride b/c it's for the sake of entertainment and he and Kookie are really close (which is why Kookie feels comfortable doing it).

Kookie and the rest of RM members totally respect YJS and know that he is the key for them being on as many variety shows as they have been.

Jang Ho-dong even pretended to be hurt by Kookie being of the YJS entertainment/variety line even tho all 3 were on X-Man together (same goes for Haha).

When I 1st saw Chun Myung-hoon on variety shows, I thought he was a comedian who just happened to be an amazing dancer since he was the butt of so may jokes (same thing applied to Ms. Shin/aka "the chicken).

Was surprised to learn later that Myung-hoon and Ms. Shin were originally "gag men."

Not surprisingly, the young idols were quiet and a bit boring while it was the veterans who supplied pretty much all the verbal banter (along w/ the RM cast).

Man, those younger male idols are sticks and Moon Hee-jun needs to update his hairstyle (so does his former bandmate, Kangta - btw).

I almost spit out my coffee when there was a reference to Chun Myung-hoon as a "pretty-boy" back in his NRG days.

Regarding the ssireum, really should have done that one of the times Suzy has been on since she is probably the queen of ssireum out of the young female idols (YEH being the one back during the X-Man days).

I gotta say that I'm hoping that RM will have less guests per episodes in the future. Its okay if all the guests are interactive but in most cases such as in this episode there are usually only one or two who are loud while the rest would be really quiet. It's just awkward to see. We also get very little interactions between members because of it.

As much as I love Ace Mong Ji, I don't like it when she gets a lot of leniency from the PDs. She was allowed to punch at bite but they didn't allow it when someone cheated her for a change. She was already amazing enough being able to guess correctly four times in a row.

Hope I didn't sound too complaining! I'm glad that the last few episodes seems to take a bit more pace. Even the brief return of nametag ripping in this episode was able to give the unique RM excitement.

The throwing away of the pebble was captured on the video, and the dynamics of that game (what was required) was a very different dynamic from the mud wrestling one. If that's the case, KJK using his strength to flip YJS and JSJ in that humilating manner, and then throwing LKS back and forth should be stopped as well. That teeny weeny bite didn't hurt him as much as shock him to drop her - all in the name of variety.

Well, i am a so-so for this episode. Firstly, i REALLY want the crew to stop inviting that many guests, like you have that many guests you wont even remember which guy is which guy and the attention is mostly on the guests.
Well i put my attention on the members more than the guests so i would like there be only one to two guests a week so i can know who is who and actually see the members doing there thing.
I liked the first and second game, but i would like the cast to stop putting all-kill style wrestling, it is a dead give away win for Jong-kook, unless you do it like this: each teams member competes and the winning person will score a point for their team and the team that has the most points wins. SO that wont be a dead giveaway and everytime i see YJS doing these missions, he is always against KJK, i would like to see him against another guy.
As for the last game, that got a bit boring since it is the same game and people over and over.
Although i liked the ending mission though,
I hope the crew will reduce the guests numbers...

Personally, I didn't like when Ji-won cheated on the pebble game. Ji-hyo doesn't get that many shining moments and I feel he just stole her (well-deserved) thunder. Like I get he didn't want to lose, but I thought it went a bit too far (and yes, I do realize she cheated when she bit Jong-kook but a) I don't approve of that either b) I did think Jong-kook kinda overdid with the whole mud thing). Even at the end, even though all the teams did it, I disliked that they cheated. I don't why but these cheating/messing up events have started to frustrate me more and more - I don't see the humor anymore.
