Jo Jung-seok offered leading role in newsroom thriller

How much do I love that Jo Jung-seok (You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin) has worked his way up to being a comedic AND dramatic leading man? It doesn’t feel so long ago that he was just Lee Je-hoon’s unforgettable best friend in Introduction to Architecture, and now he’s headlining movies on his own left and right. His romantic comedy remake My Love My Bride with Shin Mina is currently doing well at the box office (with over 2 million tickets sold), and now he’s considering the lead role in the new movie Journalist.
The project comes from director Noh Deok, who was praised for her first big feature, Temperature of Love (or Very Ordinary Couple) with Lee Min-ki and Kim Min-hee. This time she’s taking on the world of reporters, which seems to be a fast-growing trend in film and dramas this season. Basically if you’re not a king or in need of a psychiatrist, you’re a reporter.
Journalist is about the world of crime news reporters, and the movie focuses on the events surrounding a murder, from the point of view of the journalists all vying for the biggest scoop. The particular facts of the case and how they get reported in the press is the crux of the conflict, and the film focuses on competing news outlets, relationships between writers and informants, and the ethics involved (or lack thereof?).
Jo Jung-seok is considering the film for now. I do think he has a particular gift for comedy (he has an extra sparkle when he gets to be funny), but he’s damn good in dramatic roles too, so it’s good to see him doing everything from action to drama these days. He’s currently shooting Time Renegade with Im Soo-jung and Lee Jin-wook, which wraps in January. Journalist doesn’t start shooting until the new year.

I love JJS so much and I am so happy for him. But when is he gonna come back to dramaland :(. I miss him on the little screen..

Can't blame him. Drama filming schedules are punishing, and good scripts are few and far between. Movies offer more creative flexibility and maybe even better pay.

I kind of agree on the money part, but it really depends. You film a miniseries for about 5-6 months, and assuming you get paid about USD20000 per episode. You get USD320,000 for 16 episodes. On the other hand, for movies, you shoot one for about 1-3 months, you get USD200,000~300,000? It's almost as if you earn the equivalent amount in a much shorter time and in a better working environment. However, I don't think JJS earns this much though. Also, depending on the budget of the movie, you may get paid less. So it's really hard to say. Plus, the South Korean movie industry has had its fair share of box office bombs as well, but on the whole 2014 seems to be a good year for movies.

But there have been several times that actors didn't get paid for dramas, or their pay took a really long time to get to them, even the big named ones. It's rough stuff, for sure.

JJS is an exciting artist isn't he? Not many korean actors are versatile enough to excel in both comedic and dramatic roles. Plus this guy can sing too. No wonder we love him!

I'm happy he's being offered movies of different genres. But it still makes me sad that he isn't on my screen long enough. I wish he'd do a miniseries with the Hong Sisters - he'd kill it.
I skipped half of LSS because there was more stupid rather than awesome. I feel like I've last seen him in K2H which was eons ago. We need awesome actors back in dramaland!

I loved his and iu's chemistry in ybtlss. Shin shin couple is one of my fav. Hope to see both of them onscreen together again

Yay for JJS getting good sounding roles! Though I would like to see him back in a drama.
The plot outline reminds me a little of the Japanese movie "The Snow White Murder Case". Though a different setting, that movie also had a look at how news bits taken from just one side + the internet could grow out of hand. Will be looking forward to this movies wa of handling the conflict between wanting the biggest scoop and actual details of cases.

I'm so glad My Love My Bride did well
but I want Shin Min Ah to come back with a drama too :( Arang and the Magistrate was really good. I wish big stars in SK did cable series too, cable is generaly better shows. The Arang writer is now doing Misaeng which is so good...

Seriously though, does this mean his character is ultimately going to die a tragic death? Seems every role I've seen him in has gone that way.

I'd want to see a drama about journalist and psychiatrist fall in love with each other, but then they realize they actually descendants of a king. LOL (well, the possibilities are unlimited)
Journalist and psychiatrist seem like the coolest jobs on dramaland right now.

I love this person so much. I first noticed him when he played Hedwig in the musical Hedwig and The Angry Inch (his Origin of Love is a must watch!) so it was quite a surprise to me when I watched him on You're The Best, Lee Soon Shin and he was pretty hilarious. It's so nice to see him doing really really well.

I finally saw Intro to Architecture awhile ago and man, he was SO FUNNY in that. I was really pleasantly surprised.
This sounds like a good role though. Very potentially meaty.
