I am absolutely loving Hogu's Love and am so disappointed that it will be finishing next week. Kang Chul and his storyline, and Hogu and his love for the baby, and both sets of parents meeting up! Love it love it love it!

Trying to catch up dramas to fill the void left by KMHM. And thank God, the first quarter of 2015 seems to provide solid dramas. I managed to watch (and finish some) more dramas in 3 months this year than 12 months last year. That's how unappealing last year's dramas were.

1. Healer: picking this up at episode 13 where I left it before. Beautifully crafted, with charming characters. The ending was kind of a let down, though.

2. Pinocchio: loved it, though the writer has to be careful from now on or the writing will be formulaic. Special ability + sets in a world where the ability is contradictory + revenge. Oh, and I thought this drama would be more about In Ha, hence the title.

3. Punch: One of the best written dramas I've ever watched. I love that this is a politic version of Liar Game, or a real-life version of chess. Hats off for the writer. And as much as I like Kim Rae-Won, the true star of the show is Cho Jae-Hyun and Choi Myung-Gil.

4. HITTG: currently on the track to be my next favorite after KMHM, ONLY if they won't make In-Sang have an inferiority complex and get jealous with Bom's intelligence. That's a no no. I can stand couple fight, but not for that reason.
Best things about this drama:
1. Yoo Joon-Sang
2. Lee Joon & Go Ah-Sung's chemistry (seriously, can't they date in real life? I mean not now, but in the future can't they get married or something? They're both really talented and will make powerful babies like Ji Sung & Lee Bo-Young). Especially Lee Joon, he has my respect since he quits MBLAQ to pursue acting. A brave and right decision.
3. Undespisable side characters (I hardly believe myself I enjoy it when secretary Yang and Min talk in Japanese).

There's no akward acting (though there are still boring parts), the screentime is divided evenly. I like their interactions, they feel so real. My favorite part is the interaction of Han family + the interaction of workers in Han family.

I so agree with you about HITTG - the cast is wonderful and so far nothing disappointing.

The lesser characters are just as interesting as the main ones. They have their own stories to tell and I am invested in seeing them play out on the screen.

It's a true ensemble piece.

The 'side-kicks' are hilarious! The party they had! When the cat's away the mice will play.
This show's forte is dissecting the hypocrisy of the Han family bit by bit.

Clever, nuanced, layered, not a boring moment, so well acted. Just perfect.

Boy, me too. I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens with all the secretaries, Mom's witch "friend"/dad's ex and her daughter who loves Insang, Bom's uncle the former labor demonstrator and both sisters. My fantasy is that by the end, Bom will be running the whole show and Insang's parents will be the ones who've had to retire to the countryside.

Yes! Those two seem like a actual couple. I like how the employees, for the most part, are supporting In-sang and Bom.

Hi

so, fingers crossed for Ninja Teacher to become the Scholar, practicing ... stuff.... can´t say it looks like a cart-wheel yet, but, um...
it is certainly an acrobatic trick you´ve never seen before.

I tried to watch Shine or Go Crazy, found Jang Hyuk a bit annoying at first. I don´t doubt that it is well-written drama, but there`s just... so little plot with too many characters. and that chick-like guy is so blank. I´ll just watch the cool ninja parts. It doesn´t really move my heart.

Went to see a movie called Fencer. It is a Finnish-Estonian film about a guy who fled SS army in 1943, moved to Leningrad and changed his name. He became a fencer, and then in the 1950ies he returned to the occupied Estonia, becoming a teacher. He wasn´t suitable for working with children, he had rough manners and he talked little and harshly, scaring the pupils at first, but then he won them over with the same harshness. Go figure. He started teaching fencing to children most of who had lost fathers, brothers, uncles... Fencing was considered not suitable for "working class" children. the fencing club he started still works to this day in Haapsalu, Estonia. good movie, but a little slow. directed by Klaus Häro.

But what I found curious about the film was that the main actor had WAY more chemistry with his russian fencing teacher Andrei, only shortly on screen once or twice, than with the supposed "romantic interest". There was really no need for romance, they kinda pushed it in, when it could have been more about the childrens´struggles to overcome their war trauma and the tournament (now that was an exiting part! seriously, I was holding my breath, and the music turned up the tension a notch!) the romance was pointless waste of screen time.
I wished for the lead to have more scenes with his teacher instead of that lukewarm woman. It was not because she is estonian and the teacher was russian either, I have seen estonians actually emit sex-appeal. what? no, really.
it was something else. Like, the intensity in his eyes, the tension he managed to keep even when it was just his voice reading a letter to his friend. this Andrei was kinda like Se Gi - a lump of appeal all over. I really would have wanted the drama and conflict in this story to be a teachers´ wish for his student to manuever wise and stay out of trouble, and the students´ wish to risk it and do things the era wouldn´t permit. or just friends connected through a forbidden sport despite the soviet ideology trying to make them into enemies.

have you ever felt while watching a drama or movie that the chemistry between one of the leads and a secondary character just kills the main romance? like, it would make a far more interesting story, if it was about these two instead? I know it happened with School 2013... whether it is a teacher-student relationship, best friends, band of brothers or ...something like this? and what actually MAKES for a good chemistry between...

got cut:

and what actually MAKES for a good chemistry between non-romantically connected characters? sincerity? passion towards a common goal? or fear and concern?

There are reports that Han Groo rejected ‘The scholar who walks in the night’. . Anyways, why are so many people rejecting this drama? It makes me skeptical about the script. If LJK also rejects it, I will skip it for sure (or say 99%, coz I believe in the phrase ‘Never say never’ :P :P ).

And what is the fate of the Korean remake of ‘In time with you’? No confirmations there either I guess . The dramagods sure ain’t in a good mood !!

I finally got to watch ‚Boy hood‘ yesterday. It is a wonderful and unique cinematic experience. I deserves all the accolades that it got and more.

On a different note, how sad is that one person’s depression led to a waste of 150 precious lives? May their souls RIP!

I am really loving Ho-gu's Love (though I haven't seen the latest eps yet). BUT am I the only one who really really wants the endgame relationship to be either a stable threesome or a Ho-gu / Kang-chul romance? I know it's not going to happen in a million years, but... argh.

I love the friendship between Ho-gu and Do-hee; they are as cute as a basket of puppies. But I actually don't think they have romantic chemistry.

By contrast, I find that Kang-chul and Ho-gu do - very much so. This is especially remarkable given that Kang-chul is the kind of guy you'd expect couldn't have chemistry with anyone.

Just want to squee about the J DramaDate.

What a wonderful RomCom. Anne Watanabe and Hiroki Hasegawa are comedic gold.

The cast doesn't miss a beat. Ai Uchida , the actress that plays the young Yoriko, (Anne's character), looks so much like Anne, I had to do a double take. Uncanny.

A plus, for me anyways, is the ever so lovely Ryoko Kuninaka.

Yoriko's interactions with her mother are fantastic.

Easily one of the best dramas of the year. A instant classic.

The only drawback is that the last episode is upon us.

Actually, there is something to be said for the Japanese approach of 10 episodes. They get right to the heart of the matter, no dilly dallying for three or for episodes about a plot point.

I enjoy the musical intro too, as I did for Saikou no Rikon.

I'm also watching Oriento Kyuko Satsujin Jiken , a Japanese version of Murder on the Orient Express . Anne Watanabe is in that too. Her character's husband is played by Hiroshi Tamaki . Chiaki-senpai !

Even though I am know the outcome of the story, it's neat to see a Japanese take on it and the fashions of the 1930's. Pretty big cast too.

Back to Date for a moment. The writer, Ryota Kosawa also wrote Legal High. Is that worth watching?

I'm not sure... I haven't seen anything else by this writer, although it seems it's quite a mix of works he's got (pretty much every genre?). I do remember I was interested in Suzuki Sensei, but I can't remember why I didn't watch it (or if I tried an episode and then stopped watching even?). I see Hasegawa is lead in that one too.

Oriento Kyuko Satsujin Jiken ... haven't tried that as neither historical nor murder mystery are my usual go-to genres.

The intro song for Date is Furimukanaide by The Peanuts from 1962.

They were pop sensations, and they were featured in, and sang the theme songs, to three Mothra movies - Mothra (1961), Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964), and Ghidorah, the Three Headed Monster (1965). They appeared as fairies or pixies, called "shobijin" (small beauties) who had telepathic communication with Mothra, giving The Peanuts a somewhat supernatural aura.

Here are the English lyrics to the song.

Please, dont look back, because its ok to forget about me
I want to see you, I feel like crying, I miss you… but more than that I want you to move on

I remember that moment as if it was yesterday
Waiting for your response impatiently, checking the cellphone in my pocket

It didn’t matter how bad my days were , you always made me smile with the sound of your voice
it’s crazy everyday , no matter where I go , the only thing I can think about is you

I wanted us to always be together, sharing our stories, smiling together
Even my fears vanished when I was with you (Flash back)
Since we were always together I thought we would remain that way but…

Please, dont look back, because its ok to forget about me
I want to see you, I feel like crying, I miss you… but more than that I want you to move on

I really cried watching the last eps ( eps 8 and 9). Though the end game should be for the main leads, I love the twists. I love Ryoko Kuninaka's character who just could not shake off her first love... I usually dislike the first love formula in K dramaland but I like this one. ( on the side note, Kuninaka recently got married to Osamu Mukai.)
There is something about Okinawa gene in female actresses in J dramaland;Kuninaka, Kuroki Meisa, Nakama Yukie, Aragaki Yui etc are all from Okinawa and they are quite striking.

Japanese dramas do not have much formulations, their plots and dialogues are quite unique. Date does not have any cliche and their dialogue brings up some provoking thoughts.

I like Kyowa Kaisha Yasumimasu as well as Ryusei Wagon.

'Kyowa,,' makes me sympathetic to Hanae who fell in love with much younger Uni student,,, her life has much anxieties due to her love life, her over the top imagination in her head is hilarious.

Ryusei Wagon is seriously good, as good as Date but this drama got a totally different plot, much darker and no romance. The two male leads are brilliant, their emotions are raw and their faces are raw as well. I mean when I watch K drama, main male leads over forty often got botox or something on their faces( even younger actors got it done) but this two guys have wrinkles etc, makes me feel that they are alive!

Then I wonder how I could have translated his sayings with certain nuance into English( it's hard to deliver the message) and I find myself taking a long time to come up with a good translation or I cannot find it!!,,,

Hello all:

Wow, this season and all the birth secrets! Or birth secrets and lost babies to come!

I was so loving Twinkle Twinkle but now I suspect the baby will be adopted out or some such thing. Please do not do that to me, krama. I just couldn't deal. Curse you my lost/switched baby issues. Woon tak is going to be very nasty and vindictive. I would've wanted to see that.

Was also loving Bluebird's House then luxury-loving chewing gum probable mom showed up. Darn it! Another great drama I have to drop because of my issues with lost children. It's as if the entire season should've had "trigger alert: lost child" written on blaring signs. It's entirely my faul but I'm sure other folks have weird triggers. Abused women, for instance. Why did mine have to be an issue with such a common kdrama trope?

Same for Hogu's Love... of course...now i'll have to return to watching that.

Angry Mom: oh my gosh! The cruelty done by almost everyone in this drama. Dear writer, you went there! And I'm proud of you for that... But wow, all those kdrama coincidences makes it less believable! Where is heroine's mom? If heroine was pregnant during incarceration for murder of her beloved, who took care of her and baby? Why am I convinced that Judge/Teacher's Dad is evil itself? Teacher Do/Secret Chairman Son, youmust go down! This is a seriously hateful villain. I can't even admire his machinations.. he is just so nauseating/frustrating to watch.

Shine: When are they gonna explain thatour heroine is a princess? That wedding night! The saddest I've seen in ages! Im Juhwan is totally nailing it! Tragic Princely love!

Unkind Women: Evil Teacher will be related to Hyun Soek no matter what if one of her sons is fated for Ma Ri. Her dating kendo master is one of the most normal romances
I've seen in a while. Please, drama, don't pull the rug out from under me. I'm forgiving this drama for the extreme coincidences and manipulative accidental meetings and non-meetings. Just as i'm doing it in Angry Mom. But there are moments!

Grapevine: Beautiful, classy, wonderful, perfection!

That's about it. I might try to find and marathon Jingbirok...if folks say it's good. Is ir?

Happy weekend, all!

Now that Twinkle has been cut down again to 26 episodes, I don't even know how it's gonna end properly. I really hope she doesn't adopt out the baby. Even if it's the baby of the man who killed her father, it's also her baby and his grandson.

We're going to miss out on a romance between her and Assistant Goo now, because of the cut. No idea what evil crazy hubby is gonna do.

At the moment though, all I actually want to see is Soon Jung and Do Hoon run off into the sunset together, lol

So far I find BH better than Legendary Witch - that was such a disappointment. I kept watching just in the hope of seeing more of that cute little girl (didn't happen much unfortunately)... and because of haraboji...and that cell mate who won the lotery. Suprisingly I managed till the end... so maybe I will finish BH as well... :--)

Hi Everyone!

I hope you are all doing well! ....... Dealing with unseasonably hot temperatures. It's like the middle of summer and it's only March!

What terribly horrific and sad news about the German airplane a few days ago. My condolences to all those grieving family members.

On a much happier and lighter note, what a casting news-filled week this has been! ....... It looks like some good stuff is coming up. Yay!

Watched this week:

Kill Me, Heal Me - Oh what fun it has been getting to meet everyone!

Marriage Not Dating - I finally got around to watching this. ....... I've watched 4 episodes so far and I already can't stop laughing.

Shine Or Go Crazy - So I watched a couple of minutes of the first 2 episodes. ....... While not too bad, I've decided to put it to the side for now and watch it some other time.

That's about it for now. ....... Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

Heard It Through The Grapevine is another drama I keep on hearing good things about week after week.

I wasn't too excited about it initially when I heard about it, but all the positive feedback is quite interesting.

@korfan - on the casting news, I was much more excited a few weeks ago when we had all the offers going out to people I liked.

I'm really happy that Kang Sora and Kim So-hyun are to lead upcoming dramas (and Yoo Yeon-seok joining Kang Sora in the Hong sisters drama), and looking forward to Lee Jun-ki accepting the vamp scholar.

BUT I'm not thrilled that Lee Yubi didn't get her lead role after all. Or that Han Groo turned down the Scholar offer/MBC rescinded it, and horrors, one of the actresses they are in talks with is Jin Se-Yeon *blech*. To quote someone, it's like having your chocolate taken away and replaced by smelly digested food.

3. Yoo yeon sook and kang sora confirmed for jejudo gatsby: hell to yeah! Lets party!
4. Kim so hyun confirmed for school 2015: love her, love school franchise, love this
5. nam joohyuk potential cast school2015: huh? Dont really knkw him
6. Jinyoung as supporting cast for jejudo gatsby: .......
7. Joo sang wook and kim sun ah for masked prosecutor: whichever train this goes count me along for the ride

And here I am, still waiting for ANY casting news for my favorite actress, Moon Geun Young.. Where the hell is she?? Why in all drama casting, I haven't even seen her name is considered for something? Do the producers/PD/writers forget her completely?

Anyway, I can only hope the dramas above turns out to be great, despite some iffy castings...

re: 8, I read that some people are saying MBC is the one that withdrew the offer and now looking for other actresses, which, WHY?!

and this is the network that cast Go Sung-hee in a lead role last year (no talent, no popularity, no previous credits to speak of apart from that one role in Miss Korea).

@czak, I LOLed when I woke up to that Kang Sora-Yoo Yeon Seok news.

I imagine the convo went like this:

Hong Sisters: Kang Sora-sshi, please be our female lead.
Kang Sora: But, who is the leading man?
HS: Kim Woobin.
Sora: Hmm...
HS: Rain?
Sora: Hmm...
HS: Yoo Yeon Seok!
Sora: K. *signs*

Fiiiiiiiiinally a romcom with YYS as lead. :D Not that I wasn't happy with the first two choices, but I'm just glad it didn't go to someone less-than-okay.

Heh, I'm a coffee snob. I currently order Green Mountain coffee or buy it from a small, locally owned shop about an hour away (the shop is called Carpe Diem and they have the most divine smelling flavored coffees!)

Been drinking coffee all my life - grew up drinking out of my dad's cup, then when I was a little older my parents would let me have my own cup sometimes (but pitched a fit cause I wanted like 4 spoons of sugar in it! lol) When I was a teenager I dropped sweetener altogether and now drink it with a bit of half & half (absolutely NO artificial creamers cause they're just plain bad for you!).

I also collect different types of coffee brewers/pots/etc. Have a couple of antique ones :)

Yoona's Street is alright; a little sordid when you look at it, but that makes it interesting. The pace is a little more sedate than with shorter dramas, so the way I am working through it is watching one episode or two on random nights when I am not in the mood or don't have the energy for anything more intense, without any sense of urgency about finishing it. I am only worrying that I may not find subtitles after episode 35... but if you haven't watched any 50-episode drama at all, you can do no better than Empress Ki; you will be marathoning and losing sleep before you know it :-)

I like the synopsis of Yoona's Street, but lately I prefer shorter dramas. Maybe I'll give it a shot~
Haha I did that with High Kick series.
I've watched a few 50+ episodes dramas and I enjoyed them.
Yes! I know what you mean with Empress Ki - I was waiting every week for the new episodes to come out since 4th episode OTL The drama was awesome, but I prefer Queen Seon Deok over Empress Ki. I finished QSD in a week... I think those two dramas are the best historical dramas from the ones I've watched.
(Sorry for my english...)

0

I think you are ahead of me on the watch count :-) Haven't seen Queen Seon Deok. I will look it up; the to-watch list is already long, and growing, but I miss having a crack drama these days (*Healer, sniff*).

0

I feel empty without Healer... And now Ho Goo's love is ending too T.T
You should definitely give QSD a chance. At first I was hesitant if I should watch it or not, but after the last episode I regretted not to watch it earlier. Have you watched Heartless city? If not I think it's a good drama to watch after Healer~

0

Ho Goo is on the list, but I was a little more eager to watch it at first; will get around to it eventually, I suppose after Pinocchio, and if I can gather some courage, Punch/Misaeng.

I did watch Heartless City; I liked it (minus the last ten minutes), though I wasn't obsessively hooked on it. I am finding that I am not particularly addicted to suspense, unless there is some light-heartedness that helps me care for the characters; two episodes away from finishing Iris 1, and no particular hurry. Have you seen Bad Guys, speaking of dark and gritty? :-)

0

I like Ho Goo a lot! The character portrayed by Seulong is so funny xD and Ho Goo is the nicest guy in Dramaland ever!
I tried to watch Misaeng and Punch but stopped respectively after 2nd and 1st episode. Not my cup of tee. I've watched Iris 1 for TOP, but I didn't enjoy it at all :( There was a lot of action, but somehow it was booooooring for me.
YES!! I did!! I need Bad Guys 2! I like dark, nice written dramas the most. I miss Jung Moon...
Have you seen White Christmas? It's my all time favourite drama.

0

Funny, that's just how I feel about Iris; lots going on, but I don't really care about any of it. I wonder if it is lack of character depth...

I wasn't really a fan of Jung Moon; I kept thinking that Lee Joon was a much better psycho, and they should have cast him instead. Jung Moon most of the time just looked bored to me. But Tae Soo, sniff :-) I do hope they give us Season 2.

I haven't seen White Christmas; from the plot summary, though, I am not sure if my poor heart could take it. You should have seen me suffer through Master's Sun :-p. But I will keep it in mind, in case I feel brave one day.

Favorites ever... aside from Healer, can't really pick one. I remember mentally assigning that award to Best Love :-) Then, Chuno and Gentleman's Dignity will always be classics...

0

Probably. They chose effects over plot. The drama visually looks awesome, but there's nothing except that. I was tired of the characters and after a few episodes I was waiting only for TOP to appear for those mere seconds xD At that time I tried to watch every drama I started watching till the very end without rewinding, but it was difficult with IRIS... Same with Athena (although it was better than Iris) and IRIS 2 - I dropped it after 7 episodes.

Haha I liked the most Jung Moon, which was surprising, because I used to dislike Park Hae Jin. He was not-so-good in the first few episodes, but after that I liked his story the most - this is why Jung Moon was mine favourite character. But yeah Tae Soo was very close to being 1st~

You should watch it! It's not really scary. I'd say it's more like a suspense. Closer to Bad Guys/Heartless City than to Master's Sun although it's nothing like those first two. There's no ghosts~ White Christmas is a must for me every Christmas xD Like Home Alone xD This is the only one drama I watched already 4 times lol

I watched all three dramas, but none of them is even close to my favourite xD I liked only a few scenes in Best Love (I thought I won't finish it), Chuno was good but I remember mainly Jang Hyuk's abs lol And Gentelman's Dignity was nice~ It's really difficult to pick favourite drama because there's many awesome dramas out there~ For me it's White Christmas at the very top, because it's uniqe, then there's nothing, and at the 2nd place I can put at least 10 dramas xD

0

Best Love was silly and not objectively a masterpiece, but I laughed a lot; I have a weak spot for handsome guys being outrageously silly :-) . The others were two of my first dramas, so they are classics for me, if only for that reason. Jang Hyuk's abs were OK, but I liked a lot of the supporting characters too, and especially Lee Jong Hyuk's change of register compared to Gentleman's Dignity. And Sung Dong-Il will always be "bad teeth" to me :-) So many great actors...

But like you, I have a few favourites, and a lot of second-places. The only ones I would recommend to outsiders who still think I am a little crazy, would probably be Healer, Empress Ki, Heartless City, and Coffee Prince. Iris, if I think they will be fooled by the Hollywood feel :-p. I would have added City Hunter, until Healer corrected everything I disliked about it :-)

It is more difficult to recommend anything to insider veterans, because what have I seen that you haven't? :-)

0

I liked the best Dok Go Jin. He was funny at times, but the drama wasn't that funny to me. The beginning was better than the last few episodes. I read so many good comments about it, so maybe this is why I ended up being a little dissapointed. I think it's not the best Hong sisters work.Chuno and Gentelman's dignity for sure are a good dramas ^^ I agree. The acting was gooood.

I was a little bit dissapointed in City Hunter as well, because it could be much more better. Although it wasn't bad. It's a drama worth to recommend. Coffee Prince was one of the first Korean dramas I've watched. Yoon Eun Hye after CP and My Fair Lady (which was 1st or 2nd Korean drama I've watched) is my favourite Korean actress, so I'm watching every drama she's starring in, although I don't like her recent dramas :(

I haven't seen Yoona's Street~ I don't know about other dramas, but I'm sure there are more dramas you've watched and I haven't~ It was so much better when I saw only a few dramas, because it was quite easy to find new, interesting or funny drama. Now I feel like I watched most of the good ones, so there's not much to see anymore :( At top of that only a few new dramas are appealing to me. For now it's only Ho Goo's love and Angry mom. Lately I'm dropping so many dramas after a few episodes :(

0

With Best Love, I thought the meta humour was funny as well, and the little details, like Dok Go jin reading a script for "Chaser" after doing "Fighter". But I was sold on the very first episode when everyone including himself got bored at the neverending fight scene. Well, we like what we like... :-)

Funny enough, I think I haven't seen any of Yoon Eun Hye's other dramas besides CP, because I tend to wait until I read opinions, and they always end up discouraging me. I was all ready for Mirae's Choice, until I heard about the ending. I'll check on My Fair Lady.

You are right that it becomes more difficult to pick dramas the more of them you have seen, but there are quite a few right now that I am either watching, keeping on the waiting list, or intending to watch when they are out. Have you tried Maids? I have heard good things about it. And I am not too far in, but I am liking I Heard it Through the Grapevine. Those parents are something else :-) .

0

Mirae's Choice was one of the worst dramas I ever watched and finished. As much as I like Yoon Eun Hye, I couldn't stand Mirae. I was waiting for Mirae's choice, but the synopsis is much more better than the drama itself. 'I miss you' was so-so. 'Lie to me' was also not so good. I wish her next project will be better. I like her previous dramas, like Goong, The Vineyard man (after the drama I wanted to go to vineyard so badly xD), CP or My fair lady (I love YEH outfits there).

No, I haven't tried Maids. I only read about the accident. I wonder if it's good. I saw only 5 minutes of I heard it through the grapevine. I guess I wasn't in the right mood to continue watching the drama. It has a heavy feel, because of the colours. The directing is very similiar to Secret Love Affair (yeah, I know it's a work of the same director), which I liked very much, but because of the heavy feel couldn't finish it. I read I heard it through the grapevine is a black comedy, so maybe I'll give it another chance :-)

There's no drama I'm waiting for right now T.T Even reunion of Soo and Doctor's son in Falling for innocence doesn't look that great (I hope I'm wrong with this one). I guess I'm too picky ^_<

Here are some off the beaten path

New Tales of Giseang - sort of makjang but had a rather addicting quality about it, I quite enjoyed it

Shut Up Family- HILARIOUS, if you like Choi Woo Shik in Hogu's love, you'll love him in this...such good comedy

Bride of the Century - it's different, got nice romance and Hong Ki does a decent job as a stuck up leading man (though I have to keep reminding myself he's not Jeremy anymore from YB)

Surplus Princess - so ridiculous but I fell in love with it after the first episode. I recommend just trying it, I know it's crazy and out there but honestly, it was just so heartwarming in the end, so sad it got cut short

Reading the recaps makes me so happy I chose Kill Me, Heal Me over Hyde, Jekyl, Me.

Ho-gu's Love- I think if we get at least a somewhat satisfying finale next week, which given some of the directions this drama has taken I'm not counting on, I'll call Ho-gu's Love a frustrating aggravating drama that ultimately I still liked enough to finish. I had no clue at the beginning that Kang-chul would grow to be my second favorite character I just hope he stays gay because Ho-gu is the one he loves, even if it started as mistaken identity. Do Do-hee has been since the beginning and still is now, even after the end of 14, I just wish she would talk to Ho-gu he'll believe and she'll gain his family and most likely friends as well.

Angry Mom- So deliciously dark, I love it.

Superdaddy Yeol- I love it.

Unkind Women- I'm starting to loose interest, Angry Mom and Superdaddy Yeol are drawing my interest away, I think I'll still watch just maybe a little later thaan normal.

I recently started watching The Return of Superman from the beginning for reasons that escape me. I don't particularly like children, to be fair I'm not overly fond of adults either. I've only seen the first 12 episodes so far so I haven't gotten to any of the additions or replacements yet and I think my favorites of the original 4, if you don't count the pilot special I haven't seen, are Tablo and Haru and Chu Seong-hoon and Sarang. I love the way Tablo plays along with Haru's imagination and the way Seonh--hoon is with Sarang. I don't quite get why the show makes a big deal out of it when Seong-hoon listens to his wife I mean from what I've seen he's by far the best at listening to his wife. Now excuse me I'm off to watch episode 13.

I'm kinda hoping kang-chul doesn't stay gay. The idea that he was emotional-less and vaguely sexless ..then he was awakened with a kiss ...seems somehow weirdly anti-gay in some ways. As if gay folks are unemotional until some point a sexual experience awakes them to life. I tend to think he was awakened to life period. In addition, because he thought a man kissed him, he has had years to imagine and dream and inhabit such a mindset. So that could be read as an obsession that took root. Either way, it's a messy paradigm.

I think it is fun in ridiculous way,
they have a plot that can make us invested our emotion but keep trolling with dumb-like idea to keep the plot moving

It is makjang to the core but there's satisfying laugh when the revenge actually work, I actually said "burn!" "deep!" when it happens.
It is also worth as reference and makjang drama experience but still have great acting and core story that ahjumma, especially my mom+grandma love it enough to wait for the revenge and happiness

don't really invested too much emotion or logic because it can make you angry and at some point too tired to even ask them to understand.
but this drama reference, like the song and the wife style is used in many SK show, as in reality program, in drama , and until know, I like the main ost and it still play as back-sound in many revenge plot

I've seen Temptation of Wife. It's a fun revenge drama.

Did NOT like what little of it I watched.

Happy Friday, Beanies!!

This has been a hectic week for me, as my youngest was in the school play ("Julius Caesar"). I'm looking forward to down time this weekend.

What I've Been Watching:

Hyde, Jekyll, & Me: I haven't watched the last episode yet, but I'm hopeful that someone will straight-up tell Dr. Kang that she is a terrible psychiatrist, and that Ha Na is going to need some therapy because...dang, girl (really, just stop.)

Blood: Why am I still watching this vampire train wreck? I don't even know. Kwon Hyun Sang has had 3 seconds of screen time in two episodes. GAH.

Bitch  Asshole: Tragic story of people who fall in love and make terrible life choices. Also, one of the hottest damn sex scenes I have ever watched. Seriously, my cheeks are getting red thinking about it. oof.

What I'm Wanting to Watch:

Missing Persons Noir: Next week! Wooo!

Ghost-Seeing Detective Cheo Yong, Season 2: SQUEEE! I loved that series SO MUCH, and I'm really excited to have another season of spooky detecting. :) ::bounces::

The Scholar Who Walks the Night: Hopefully, this will be the scary vampire show I'm waiting for. ::wishes really hard::

K-drama Moment: Just two small things this time.

1. Convinced three internet friends to watch Bitch  Asshole because of my OMG-I-Need-a-Cold-Shower reaction to the sex scene in it. ::laugh::

2. My daughter was making a 'goodbye' kit for her friend who's going back to Seoul tomorrow, & said "Can we go get her some banana milk?"
Me: "You know she's going back home where she can get it at all the stores, right?"

We've got a small Korean market near our house that carries it, and a HUGE Asian megamarket that carries it (after I complained that they carried every dang thing else but banana milk - seriously, you can buy live fish & packages of duck tongues & there's a whole aisle of noodles. They even have Durian popsicles - grosss. My husband & oldest like them. Ew.) So our fridge is usually stocked w/banana milk. :)

My daughter is now into the coffee flavored snow ice, since banana milk is scarce here. (OK, me too). You have a lot more than we do. However, since they carry her favorite barbecued eel, she's happy. Since it's so expensive she just gets it for her bday and other holidays. Usually, it's her favorite present- except the new laptop. Sooo, how are duck tongues?

If you can get past the first two episodes (which are SO BAD OMG), it gets a little better. I still think they should have gone full dark comedy, because the flashes of snark we get are the best thing about this show (except for the trio of not-the-lead surgeons, who are big fun.)

And I'm excited about Scholar - I hope it's good.

I just finished listening to the Healer podcast ohhhhh my feels. I spend this week only watching a random episode of RunningMan, Superman Returns and 1N2D. With KMHM and Healer ended (I was late watching Healer, finished it just a week ago), it's kinda hard to move on to another dramas even though I know Hogu's Love is cute (or Hogu is cute,, the last ep I watched was ep 4) and the new dramas; Angry Mom and Super Daddy Yeol seem good too.

Gah any fellow Singaporeans in this OT? This Monday our founding father passed, and it's still hard to believe he's gone. I believe my generation has the same sense of ownership, responsibility and love as he had for our nation. Controversial as his leadership was, I believe he left several values and principles that are vital to the way we plan the future of our country.

Just started watching Pinocchio! The tone reminds me so much of I Hear Your Voice. Definitely enjoying it. Finished It's Okay That's Love before that. A bit of a strange show, mainly because half the time I was frustrated with Gong Hyo Jin's character. But definitely worth enduring for those final 4 episodes.

Here!

Such a fantastic man, but such a workaholic. Whatever Lee Kwan Yew does, Singapore is always on his mind. Even when he dies, he dies on a Monday.

I say that with love.

I find it amusing how international news sites reported his death. They would praise him... then harp on how he controls our media and how un-free journalism continues to be in Singapore. Lol...

Honestly, considering the time he ruled Singapore, I have no problem with his policies. Many of them built strong foundations for Singapore. For example, our very accessible and good public education and bilingualism. However, some of them, like pushing for graduate couples, are just ridiculous... although it's not like he forced graduates to marry each other, so, I'll just roll my eyes. Heh. He was sometimes overly harsh, but the times called for it. Singapore, as such a small country would have just died if the chaos had continued. It won't work now though. So our current and future government should not operate or govern like him. But that doesn't take away from how great a man Lee Kwan Yew was.

You happy now, old man? You were so sad when your wife passed away. Now, you can be together. RIP.

Love your last statement. :)

I'm only an outsider, but I don't monitor lots of mainstream media. Most of what I read is personal anecdotes from twitter/FB friends who live in Singapore and they have same opinion as you.

It reminds me of this annoying Commander in Artemis Fowl, and the narrator described him as "The best of leaders don't always make the best of friends." They're too busy getting things done to care if people liked them.

It's rare in this world to see a political leader who is so respected by the citizens of his country, that much is for sure. And that respect isn't driven by fear, but genuine affection.

I certainly know what I'd say if any of my country's politicians kicked it, and it would be more along the lines of "good riddance, now maybe you can stop robbing public money!"

Terrible thing to happen when you are yourself totally out of it, then when you wake up, you only have one leg??? and he went to the hospital suspecting pneumonia, then fainted. so he had no idea what actually was going on

Singaporean here too :)
These few days have been sad but heartwarming in a way. I've never seen Singaporeans come together like this before. Hundreds of thousands of people queuing for up to 8hours to go to the Parliament House to pay our last respects....this moment will go down in Singapore's history.

Like our PM said, there will never be another man like LKY. Personally, I find LKY's devotion to his wife most inspiring. We can debate about his policies or how he ruled the nation but his love and devotion to Mrs Lee is undebatable.

Happy Friday, everyone!

Heard It Through The Grapevine - I'm sending up a prayer for this one, it is SO GOOD and I want it to remain that excellent for the remaining 22 episodes!

I love how cleverly this drama makes it clear exactly how absurd and petty the most powerful people in its world are, while making me almost feel sorry for them. Mama and Papa Han are so up themselves they could feel like total villains, but Yoo Joon-sang and Yoo Ho-jung are excellent at making me root for them in some situations (against the other snooty people of their world). I had a huge laugh at pompous Dad losing his cool over his high school flame needling him (and then another when said ex discovers her daughter harbouring a one-sided love for In-sang), but them awwwwww when he and his wife were cooing over the baby together.

and I have to give props to Lee Joon and Go Ah-sung too. They have to be the 'straight men' in that comedy, particularly Go Ah-sung. It's easy to come off as dull in contrast to the parents, but instead they seem real and grounded. Even if they are sometimes amusing in their naivete. I love that they start off the drama as an established couple and young parents, so they're not caught in the usual rich boy/poor girl love story tropes or even kdrama love story tropes - it's rather unusual to see a young couple who are already together and not using noble idiocy etc to deal with parental opposition. And they actually speak up for themselves against the elders! I love them.

pogo ~

Yoo Joon-sang and Yoo Ho-jung are excellent.

Yes, instead of the typical drama chaebol parents, we see their fears and frustrations while they try to put forth the stern front that fools absolutely nobody.

Go Ah-sung should be nominated for a real acting award, not some "everybody gets one" award.

Bom is doing a balancing act, trying to meet expectations from all sides. She's juggling being a mother, a wife, daughter, daughter in law and student, all while in a restrictive environment.

Hello all!
Back to Open Thread again!
I missed it for a few weeks, albeit very consciously.. I just haven't watched that much dramas these days..

SO first, I have my crack drama Heard It Through The Grapevine!
OMG it's so hilarious!! I always laugh, always sad.. in short, I really care to each and every character in this drama, even the butler/maids/secretaries... The last ep's staff's party is so much fun, but it has to be cut short :p
On the other hand, I also love the dynamics between In Sang and Bom and between the in-laws! The in-laws are in stark contrast, yet they are also really concerned about little Jin Young.
Love this drama, with all amazingness, wit, and even fault.. (though what's the drama's fault?)

Also tried to continue Hogu's Love.. But I think I won't be able to enjoy this.. I don't find any strong chemistry between Hogu and Do Hee. That's really important in romcom, yet I haven't found it. Choi Woo Shik is still adorable and Seulong is hilarious, but I'm not sure whether I would continue this or not..

Will try Angry Mom too this weekend and Unkind Women because I heard many good reviews and comments about the two dramas.

Anyway on real life side, this week Ji Chang Wook really comes to my country, Indonesia!! It feels like dream comes true... Though I can't see him directly because I had pile of works on my hand, I'm happy enough that he visited Indonesia and enjoyed his time in Bali.. Just check his Instagram! He's all sorts of hilarious! And just tonight he came back to Korea :(

Random Question: Do you ever hear a melody from a past (or present) drama in your head (sometimes only a phrase--over and over) and not know what drama it's from? Does it drive you as NUTZ as it does me?

I am so thankful I figured out the ear worm that was replaying in my brain was an instrumental opening to one of the songs from Kill me! Heal me! before I lost it. When i get old plots stuck in my head I can usually do a search and find out (phew) what I was thinking. But when notes play in my brain, and I KNOW they're from SOME show I've watched, it's not so easy. (There is no site with a little keyboard that you can play songs you can't figure where you know them from. . .is there?) Am I the only person who does this? (The other time it drives me nuts is watching Running Man or 2 Days 1 Night and a little snippet of drama music will be used for background. (I do recognize Mishel's theme, from the great queen. But that's about it.)

I mostly rely on shazam desktop app which keeps track of music playing on the computer/tv. Later I just have to scroll through the history if I can place the time frame where I last head the tune. Once I find that tune in Shazam, I bookmark it.

It happens a lot, but the confusion doesn't last long. I'm lucky I watch dramas with my sister. Sometimes we'd be talking and one of us hums a tune and the other would help recall which drama it's from.

Or if we're feeling kinda dickish, we'll hum a random song that sounds like the confusing one to make it harder for the other to remember things. Hehehe~

I think there's an app where you can hum and it will try to find the similar song. But that was years ago, I'm not sure if it's still up now, or if it works for niche songs like drama OSTs.

But they were all wrong. I checked the ost track listing against my music collection and then songs released a year or 2 before and after the show. Oh the anguish!

The song is called Drive by As One and was released with lyrics 5 years later!

This was a good week for episodes:

Mondai no Aru Restaurant - 8 episodes all subbed and finished. A very satisfyingly appropriate ending. No tears spared, no sugar coating, but actually delightful.

Date - the far reaching tentacles of a mother's words and actions shape us long after she is gone. I am a Washio fan as much as I am a ead couple fan.

*possible spoilers" Heard it Through the Grapevine - I loved the 100 day celebration in the "lower quarters." Why is it that Bom's parents can see the value in In Sung's family's traditions, but the rich folk can't muster a kind word or a wee space in their hearts for the baby's other grandparents. i adore In Sang who is himself all the time with everyone. He has the most infectious grin-smile that he can't hide when he is around Bom. And Bom is smart enough to take advantage of the opportunity she is being offered - even if there are strings attached, she doesn't exactly see it that way and can compromise with the belief that down the road, it will make a positive difference. I do think the rude realization that it won't open the door for her parents will be harsh. I also hope that she doesn't become contemptuous toward In Sang and begin to think he is elitist by virtue of his birth status. It is hard to imagine that might happen, but In Sang is afforded a carefree life financially speaking, and although he doesn't flaunt it, she may resent the lack of understanding of her family's generational plight financially (simply because he's never been there and never will be there).

Ho Goo's Love - This show just gets better each episode. The way Ho Goo carries the weight of his world on his shoulders melts my heart. I think the story's weakness is the drive for the gold that Do Hee supposedly is motivated by, but they might still be able to pull it off for a resolution that allows her to move away from that burden.

@owl - Grapevine so far hasn't really done anything that I would have expected, but one thing remains true - In-sang's parents see people as position first and people second.

And that's really obvious with Bom and her family, since the his parents can see that she is a gem in the rough - his dad acknowledges that she's got a brilliant mind but is still obsessed with her lack of 'spec' in terms of illustrious family and fancy university, and their only solution is to cast her family as the "ordinary but honest" people and exaggerate her grandfather's status as a maker of seals. It's pretty funny just how obsessed they are with status, and the ways they draw the lines even among their circle of friends.

Finally, FINALLY finished Punch! One of my all-time favorites now; so very good. Perfection from everyone. I was even able to overlook Kim Rae Won's perfect hair immediately after brain surgery. Who would want to mess up that gorgeous head of hair just for medical accuracy? Medical accuracy in Kdrama??? What was I thinking?!!

Speaking of hair, I'm loving IHITTG. I fell in love with the sardonic humor in the first few episodes. I just wish they would continue along that vein a little more. And the couple and their baby are all really cute. I like how they are writing her as the anti-Candy, with the brains and guts in the relationship. (It's really too bad DB is not continuing to recap this.) I enjoy seeing how everyone who has a vested interest in maintaining the status quo of this powerful family plays their part in creating the illusion of majesty and elegance. I think part of the reason the cinematography is shot through things is that we are seeing the family through the eyes of the servants, who are never obvious, but always just within range to fulfill their duty. And I love how family traditions, such as seeing the father to the door every morning, are throwbacks to previous centuries. And yet the father asks "Do I need to loosen up?' I'm starting to wonder exactly what that would look like; It's almost a little scary.
