She Was Pretty: Episode 5

The funny thing about lies is, once you tell one, they have a way of multiplying. Pretty soon you’re trapped by them with no way out but to tell the truth… but what if that truth is more painful than the lies? Ha-ri’s got herself in quite a bind and needs to find a way out that doesn’t involve digging herself in deeper. Meanwhile Sung-joon is getting closer to the truth, and tiny doubts start to grow — he won’t be able to ignore them for much longer.

EPISODE 5 RECAP

Hye-jin tries to sneak into Sung-joon’s suite to retrieve her phone, and a childhood memory reminds her of his favorite day of the year — International Left-hander’s Day. He’d used the date for all of his combinations, so much that Hye-jin had assumed it was his birthday and gotten him a cake. Sure enough, he’s still using it, and she gets into the suite.

While she grabs her phone she doesn’t notice that Sung-joon is starting to wake from his drunken stupor. He sees her leaning close to his puzzle of “Dance in the Country,” the one missing a piece, and comes up behind her to ask what she’s doing here.

It startles Hye-jin and she knocks the puzzle to the ground, smashing the glass frame to bits. She starts to step back away from Sung-joon and nearly steps barefooted in the shards, but he quickly grabs her and pulls her away from the glass — and very close to himself.

But the moment only lasts a second, and he lets go of her and asks again why she’s in his home. Hye-jin is so flustered that she can only stammer out random words that make no sense, but somehow Sung-joon interprets exactly what she’s saying.

She tries to clean up the mess she made of the puzzle but Sung-joon stops her, and she manages to run out without breaking anything else, though she does accidentally walk out wearing one of his shoes, ha. He just sticks her shoe out the door and Hye-jin’s humiliation is complete.

Ha-ri eyes a fancy pair of shoes and decides to buy them, though they don’t have them in her size. The only pair are slightly too small but she takes them anyway, even when the saleswoman warns her they also run small. But what Ha-ri loves, Ha-ri gets.

After, she goes to her “favorite place,” which turns out to be Hye-jin’s family’s home. Awww. Clearly Hye-jin’s parents see her as another daughter, and she has dinner with them like one of the family. They barely notice when Hye-jin comes in, grumpy that this is supposed to be her Finally Got A Job party and they all started eating without her.

Hye-rin is a real snot, so Hye-jin snipes at her to enjoy being pretty while she can. Wasn’t she about Hye-rin’s age when her looks started to disappear? Furious, Hye-rin fumes that she’ll never look like Hye-jin.

Hye-jin comments that they both take after their father, but Mom defends her husband, saying that in her eyes there’s nobody as handsome. The family banter back and forth while Ha-ri looks a little wistful.

As she flips through an old writing tablet, something falls out of the pages — a puzzle piece, the one from Sung-joon’s puzzle with the hidden lady’s face. She remembers the day Sung-joon left for America, when he’d pressed the piece into her hand and turned to go, then run back for a quick kiss. He’d thanked her for being his umbrella, and promised to be her umbrella the next time they met.

Now we see that on the back of the puzzle piece, Sung-joon had drawn a tiny umbrella. Why does that break my heart a little? Hye-jin muses that all those years ago, they couldn’t have imagined meeting again like this.

On the drive home, Hye-jin gets a call from Seul, the office gold-digger (who I was mistakenly calling So-ri, whoops!). She needs some files from the office but she’s in a very important meeting (a mani-pedi, naturally) and tells Hye-jin to go to the office and email them to her.

Ha-ri fusses at Hye-jin for being too nice but heads to the office, and Hye-jin starts to car-dance to a favorite song of theirs. Ha-ri isn’t charmed and orders Hye-jin to call Seul back and refuse to do her work for her, but when Hye-jin begins to sing along, Ha-ri gets into the cute song as well.

In the now-quiet house, Hye-jin’s mother sends a text to her old friend, Ha-ri’s mother, with a picture of Ha-ri with Hye-jin’s whole family. She tells her that her daughter is just like her, and promises to keep her updated. I had assumed Ha-ri’s mom was dead, but I suppose she’s just gone away?

Hye-jin sends Seul the email and doesn’t even get a thanks for it, and she notices that Sung-joon left the lights in his office on. She goes in and takes a minute to mimic him with his fussy little timer, then breaks the arm off a mannequin.

A phone rings and Hye-jin hears Sung-joon’s voice, and she hides in the closet just before he walks in. He assures the person on the other line in English that Most Korea will not be closing down in three months.

It’s a very close call when Sung-joon slides open the closet door to grab his coat, but he doesn’t open it far enough to see Hye-jin. Except that he did, and he slams the door open, and Hye-jin shrieks and throws the mannequin arm at him. HA, that was great.

Hye-jin haltingly explains that she was just here to turn off the light, more interested in how much of his phone conversation she understood. She picked up enough to know that Most is in danger, so Sung-joon tells her that if anyone from the team learns this, he’ll assume the information came from her and hold her responsible.

As Hye-jin scurries out her purse catches in the door, and she assumes it’s Sung-joon stopping her. She repeats that she won’t tell anyone, then realizes to her mortification that she’s talking to a door, and Sung-joon is just nodding his head like he expects this kind of thing from her by now. She wrenches free and runs, not noticing when the missing puzzle piece falls out of her purse.

Sung-joon runs into Ha-ri at the gym again, and though she’s already finished her workout, she says that she just got there and joins him. She struggles to keep up, and Sung-joon definitely notices. As they leave she offers Sung-joon a ride home, but he declines since she seems so tired.

She wears up and down that she’s not the least bit tired and heads for her car, but Sung-joon stops her to point out an eyelash on her face. He leans in close to get it for her and tells her to make a wish and blow it away — something they used to do as kids. Ha-ri can’t think of a wish so Sung-joon makes one for her. Nearby Joon-woo comes by with his bike and sees Sung-joon and Ha-ri, surprised that the boss apparently has a girlfriend.

During the car ride there’s a bit of a tangle of arms because of Sung-joon’s lefthandedness, and he gets excited when a song he likes comes on the radio. He sings along in this horrible screech, evidently completely tone-deaf, which is simultaneously hilarious and adorable. Ha-ri gets the giggles at Sung-joon’s hideous singing, which just prompts him to sing louder. Aww, I love this playful side of him.

At home Hye-jin comments on how long Ha-ri’s workout took tonight, and Ha-ri again doesn’t take the opportunity to come clean. Hye-jin mentions that Sung-joon was at the office when she got there, making Ha-ri even more uncomfortable.

The next day at work Ha-ri sees Shin-hyuk leaving for work, and wonders why someone would live at a hotel for nearly a year. The hotel just assumes he’s a chaebol, but nobody knows anything about him.

He startles Ha-ri by popping up right in her face, recognizing her as the employee who thought he was homeless. He pretends to have been really hurt by that, but declares them even since she found his MP3 player. He even high-fives and fistbumps her, and she thinks he doesn’t seem much like a chaebol.

At the street corner, Sung-joon is surprised out of his engrossment in his reading by Hye-jin’s chirpy, “It’s a go!” again this morning. This time he sees her in the crowd and frowns in confusion. They end up in the same elevator again and give each other weird side-eyes, both wary of the other.

Sung-joon notices a bandage on Hye-jin’s hand, knowing she cut herself on the broken glass at his place. She catches him looking at her and it makes him unaccountably skittish, and he starts to ask about the glass but he’s saved when the elevator doors open. Ha, he dashes out of there so fast.

It’s only now that Hye-jin realizes that she doesn’t have her puzzle piece anymore, and knows immediately that she must have lost it when she was wrestling with Sung-joon’s office door. She crawls through the office and finally locates it under a cabinet. She pushes it out with a ruler but Poong-ho kicks it, under the glass and right into Sung-joon’s office, where he steps on it and it sticks to his shoe.

Since he’s in there she needs an excuse to go in, so she grabs the mail and hand-delivers it to Sung-joon. Crawling under his desk doesn’t work so she tries a different tactic, offering to shine his shoes for him, but he turns her down (and gets stuck shining Poong-ho’s shoes, which she somehow catches on fire).

Sung-joon finally leaves his office and the puzzle piece unsticks from his shoe just as he’s walking past Hye-jin’s desk. He feels something strange and stops, but as he’s turning around, Shin-hyuk flies over and grabs him in a dramatic hug, HAHAHA.

Shin-hyuk smoothly slides the puzzle piece under his own shoe while Sung-joon flails at him, and when Sung-joon breaks free, Shin-hyuk says it was for an article he’s writing on bromance. OMG, I’m dying. He tries for another hug but gets smacked away.

Shin-hyuk shows Hye-jin proudly that he saved her puzzle piece, then slides it back to his desk with him. He makes her take him to a pojangmacha before he hands it over, explaining that he overheard her asking the cleaning lady about it.

Shin-hyuk asks if she’ll be found out as Sung-joon’s first love if he sees the puzzle piece, which shocks Hye-jin into silence. It turns out that the night she got so drunk and yelled the truth down the phone to Sung-joon, the call was disconnected, but she’d hollered out the whole story before collapsing.

Hye-jin actually relaxes, glad to be unburdened of her secret to at least one person. Shin-hyuk assumes she’s keeping the secret because of the boss/employee imbalance, but she says she’s not the popular, smart, beautiful girl Sung-joon remembers anymore.

When she tells him she used to be pretty, Shin-hyuk says in a quiet voice, “You still are, now.” Hye-jin assume she’s being kind though he insists it’s true, and she apologizes for what she said about his little sister. He’s just so cheerful all the time, she didn’t think he’d have that sort of sorrow.

She tells Shin-hyuk that from now on he can think of her as his little sister, and she’ll treat him as an oppa. She addresses him as “orabeoni,” the formal version of “oppa,” which makes him grin with happiness, and how are you two so cute??

Sung-joon happens to drive past just as Hye-jin is feeding Shin-hyuk a lettuce wrap, and watches them for a long moment with a strange expression. He drives away looking unsettled, while Shin-hyuk asks what Hye-jin will do if Sung-joon recognizes her. She tells him that won’t happen, because Sung-joon thinks his first love is someone else.

Today at the gym Ha-ri watches the door, hoping that Sung-joon will show up while she’s there. After she goes to the convenience store and runs into Shin-hyuk, who’s short on change, and pays for his items as well. They sit on a bench outside while he eats his ramyun, Ha-ri watching hungrily.

Soon she’s slurping down his ramyun, and she takes a call from Hye-jin. She calls her “wife” as usual which gives Shin-hyuk the wrong idea about her sexual preferences, so she explains that it’s just a pet name. They walk back to the hotel, Ha-ri berating herself for eating so much, and Shin-hyuk tosses her some gum and a blinding smile before going inside.

At work the next day Hye-jin picks up some dry cleaning, and in the pocket is a reciept with a cute little cartoon of her on the back. Cartoon Ha-ri is yelling, “Disgraceful, disgraceful!” like she did when she beat up the pervert in the bar, and she knows it’s from Sung-joon and smiles.

She goes on a date that night with a random suitor, wearing her new shoes that are a bit too small (but so pretty!). She doesn’t feel like doing the usual things, and asks her date to take her to the Han River to play speedminton like she did with Sung-joon.

Her date takes it to the dirty place, offering more fun ways to sweat if that’s what she wants, and Ha-ri grows annoyed. Can’t he just take her for a nice meal and talk? She turns on the radio and hears the song that Sung-joon sang for her, then at a crosswalk she looks up to see him crossing the street.

Ha-ri jumps out of the car and follows Sung-joon, and as she runs she remembers Hye-jin telling her that true love is when you miss a person, and you’re happy when you’re with them. You want to do everything with them, and you see them even from a distance. But her too-small shoes pinch, and Ha-ri has to stop while Sung-joon walks on.

The next morning the shoes are in the garbage, and Ha-ri finds Shin-hyuk to ask him to do something for her. She doesn’t want to be greedy for “the wrong shoes” anymore, and asks for his help. We don’t hear her request, but later we learn that she asks him to come with her tonight to meet a man, and pretend to be her fiance.

It’s lunchtime at Most, and the whole office goes out together — without Sung-joon. Hye-jin feels uncomfortable not even inviting him, but she bows to peer pressure and goes with the group. She spends the whole meal worrying about Sung-joon alone at the office, with no friends and nobody to eat with, while Shin-hyuk watches her closely.

Joon-woo tells everyone that the boss has a girlfriend, and they all wonder how that’s possible with his prickly personality. Hye-jin droops as he goes on about how beautiful the “girlfriend” is, and Shin-hyuk argues that just because they were together doesn’t mean they’re dating.

Ha-ri calls Sung-joon (who’s having coffee for lunch, and now I’m really concerned) to ask him to meet up tonight. He goes back to the Most office, and overhears Seul bragging on the phone to a friend that she got the stupid new intern to do her work for her over the weekend, and he doesn’t look pleased.

On the way back to the office, Hye-jin grabs a sandwich for Sung-joon, which is so sweet. She leaves the food on his desk, and it’s the first thing he sees after hearing that Seul took advantage of her. He hears Seul giving Hye-jin another task that should be hers, but he snaps the blinds closed when Hye-jin sees him watching her.

That night Seul follows Joon-woo when he heads home, looking predatory and reminding Hye-jin that she has to finish the project before she can leave. Reporter Cha spills her coffee in her haste to get to a meeting so Hye-jin offers to clean it, but her cut finger stings when the hot coffee hits it.

She looks up to see Sung-joon watching her, and he gets upset that she’s always offering to do things for everyone else. He tells her to get a new bandage, framing it as if she’ll soil things by touching them with an old bandage. She doesn’t know where the fresh bandages are which annoys him even more, and he drags her over to the first aid kit, complaining nonstop.

She fumbles with with the packaging with her sore finger so he pulls her back to him by the hoodie, and shows her how to open it. She screws it up again (it’s hard to put a bandage on a finger on your dominant hand!) so he fixes it, groaning that she can’t do anything right, but with the cutest look of concern on his face. He’s such a mother hen right now.

It’s raining again when Hye-jin finally heads home, and she covers her head with her hoodie and runs out into the rain with a rebel yell. Meanwhile Sung-joon is driving home and passes a terrible accident, and he’s riveted by the sight of an injured woman still in the overturned car.

He remembers an eerily similar accident when he was a child, when it had been his mother in that car. Back in the present, adult Sung-joon starts to have a panic attack, and he stops to get out of the car to try to get some air.

On her bus heading home, Hye-jin sees Sung-joon collapse in the middle of the street. She goes to him but he’s practically catatonic by now — Hye-jin sees the nearby accident and knows exactly what’s happening. She takes off her hoodie and holds it over both of them, telling Sung-joon to look at her and not the accident. She soothingly repeats that it will be okay, and Sung-joon finally turns his face to her. Oof, he looks so lost.

While Ha-ri and Shin-hyuk wait awkwardly for Sung-joon to show up, Sung-joon kneels in the street staring at Hye-jin. He remembers this exact situation when they were children, when Hye-jin had promised to be his umbrella from now on. He reaches up to caress her face, whispering, “Hye-jin-ah…” and Hye-jin’s eyes widen.

Lost in each other, neither Sung-joon nor Hye-jin notices the truck barreling down on them.

COMMENTS

What a sweet moment, if it weren’t for the imminent mortal danger — though I’m sure Sung-joon and Hye-jin will be fine. I’d love it if Sung-joon really realized that this is his Hye-jin, but it feels like he’s not really seeing her right now, but the Hye-jin from his memory. I don’t think Sung-joon is in this moment at all, and that he’ll soon wake up and go back to thinking Ha-ri is his Hye-jin, but it’s a lovely tease for when he does finally learn the truth.

I’m glad that Ha-ri has decided to do something about her growing crush on Sung-joon, because I’m getting worried about her continued lying that she’s Hye-jin. Let’s be honest, the best thing about this dramaverse so far is her and Hye-jin’s friendship, not to mention how Hye-jin’s family has taken her in as one of their own, loving her like their own daughter. This betrayal could blow up not only the close bond between Ha-ri and Hye-jin, but it could very well cost Ha-ri the only healthy familial relationships she’s got. I can certainly understand why she’s intrigued with Sung-joon, because he’s probably the first man to treat her like a person rather than arm-candy and something to fondle at the end of the night. He doesn’t even push the moment the couple of times they’ve gotten physically close — he always backs away immediately. He’s respectful of her, which she probably hasn’t experienced from a man she’s dating in quite some time, if ever.

That’s why I’m glad she’s finally met Shin-hyuk, because he would also treat her as a person and not an accessory. He’s not immune to her looks — he’s mentioned them several times — but he’s also not influenced by them. He talks to her like a normal person instead of a conquest or a goddess to worship. And it’s obvious that Ha-ri likes him already, at least on a personal level, because that smile on her face after eating ramyun with him could have outshone the sun. She certainly hasn’t smiled like that with Sung-joon, because she knows deep down that he thinks she’s someone else, and doesn’t really know her at all. He’s interacting with her as if she’s Hye-jin, and while Shin-hyuk may not know her very well (yet), he does know who she truly is.

I know that the general consensus is that Sung-joon and Ha-ri match each other better than Sung-joon and Hye-jin, but I think that they’re actually too alike to work out long-term. They’re both very internal people, keeping their true selves hidden, and that could spell trouble if both halves of a couple aren’t able to share easily. In that vein I think that Hye-jin is a much better match for Sung-joon, because she’s so open and dynamic, she could pull him out of his shell (and you could say the same thing for Shin-hyuk and Ha-ri).

I’m finding Sung-joon more likable now that he’s not being so outright cruel to Hye-jin… he’s still not being nice, or even neutral, but at least he’s not hitting below the belt anymore. It’s definitely been frustrating to watch him acting so mean to her, and the rest of the Most team, when I still believe that he’s that nice kid underneath. It’s telling that he’s starting to watch Hye-jin and notice her, and even gets upset when he feels she’s being taken advantage of. It’s not love yet, but, baby steps.

You can already start to see the little subconscious connections that Sung-joon feels to Hye-jin, though he’s totally unaware of them right now. The way he completely understood her gibberish when she was trying to tell him that he passed out and she took him home is a great example. Then when Hye-jin immediately knew that Sung-joon was in trouble and why, and what to do, is another great example of how their connection as children carries through to the present. I appreciate that this isn’t just a rehashing of the old “they met as children once, so they’re fated to be together” trope, but that Sung-joon and Hye-jin’s history together actually has meaning and depth that carries through to the present day. In addition to informing who they are as adults, it also will help frame their current relationship once all the identity secrets are out. They “get” each other, though they don’t know it yet, and it will be fun seeing that play out once Sung-joon knows she’s the real Hye-jin.

The childhood connection and how it is persisting until the present day still slays. Gets me crying with the nostalgia every damn time. I think this definitely played out in the last scene--they really have a very deep connection.

Shin-hyuk telling Hye-jin she's pretty made me aww. If they're not going down the love triangle road in that one, I think they will be a great oppa-dongssaeng fair.

The band-aid scene was so cute. It is a pretty commom scene in k-dramas but this has got to be the cutest. I love the scrunch in Sung-joon's eyes hehe.

I am still so rooting for Sung-joon and not just because it's Park Seo-joon, but because there is something there about him that remains loveable and I know it only takes the right girl to bring that out. And I really want Hye-jin and Ha-ri's friendship to remain as tight. Omgpleaseshowiambeggingyou.

Keep it up. PLEASE KEEP IT UP, SHOW.

Yes i love the band aid scene too! SJ pulling HJ's hoodie cap reminds me of 'Kill me heal me' (Hwang jung eum pulled Jisung's hoodie in a similar way when he was yoona). I really love these 2 chemistry here, and i really hope jisung can cameo in this show!

I really like the childhood connection in this show too - it is very well executed. I appreciate how these 2 are attracted to each other, regardless of the first love factor, esp how SJ is increasingly attracted to HJ. Episode 6 further proves this point.

Yes, SH is such a good oppa to HJ. I hope he can be a guidance to both HJ and HR in this complicated love journey. My guess is that he will be the one who break the news about the real HJ to SJ in the later episodes. However, before that, let me enjoy more of SH and SJ moments/bromance - they are so cute!

I am starting to love this show more now that Sung Joon is toning down his mean-ness.

It's such a sweet show and if it plays the cards right, it'll be one of the better shows this year!

Though I do have to say, he did soften towards her rather quickly, but I'll overlook that in the name of SQUEEEE

the drama as a com/rom is getting to me , but now I have seen six episodes I wonder if it just doing its work too slowly and by the time I am fully behind the drama they have will have reached the melo drama time in the drama and set me back again and then it will end leaving me feeling disappointed in it. Com/rom dramas are always full of plot and charachter holes, the main point is to get the couple into some sort of conflict and then step back and watch the fun, and often the reason behind the confict make no real sence in a real world. The trick though is to make it so fun and sweet and romantic that when watching the drama you really do not care about all those plot holes and so forth. For me this drama failed to do that I can not keep from thinking she has a mother she not dirt poor she has a best friend that knows beauty and fastion....then why dose she look like she dose? why dose she dress as she dose why dose she know nothing of simple beauty care lol pretty much an endless lot of why dose!

This might be a shallow comment but I find Sung Joon looked much better with his hair not all gelled up. He looked so hot when he is all soaked in the rain even with the lost expression!!

Beginning to dislike Hari, the friend. She knows she is doing wrong, hence the keeping things secret, but persists anyway. She is essentially willing to throw away a sisterly relationship, because she wants to be selfish, and in her own words, she has to have "anything she loves."

Knowing Hye Jin, she will gladly give up her feelings for her friend, and I sense that Kdrma round of noble idiocy is coming soon.

I am not one to suffer from SLS - Second Lead Syndrome, but Siwon is killing it in this drama. His acting has improved by leaps and bounds, and like Hwang Jung-eum, I think they have both found that they are natural, comedic actors. Siwon liking KHJ as Jackson, just the way she is - earns him major, bonus points. I think this might be the drama, were the Second lead gets the girl.

Funny enough HJE and PSJ had more chemistry in Kill Me Heal Me, were they were playing siblings than on here, but then again, it is still early in the drama.

Oh, and I really am starting to dislike the second lead more - can't stand weak, selfish, women.

We can all see where the Hari storyline is going to go, but I can't hate her.

She's very lonely. She's been starved of love. And I think there are different types of loves - all which need to be fulfilling to be a healthy individual. That is, if you weren't loved by your parents, you'll seek it out more in your friends or more probably in a romantic relationship. But overdoing one isn't going to fill the gap of another. (Not completely, anyway.) And same goes for friend vs boyfriend. I don't think you can argue one 'wins' over the other - they're different.

We've seen that all the friends at her birthday party were basically rich men who wanted to hit on her. She might have dealt with it until now, but now that she's had a taste of what a guy can be, it's obviously harder for her to go back to shallow relationships based on sex and clubbing. (Not saying sex and clubbing has to be bad y'all, calm down. But at the moment, it seems to be /only/ sex and clubbing.) I thought it was a bit devastating, when she was in the car with that random guy and she was like WHY CAN'T WE JUST TALK FOR ONCE.

I'm not saying what she's doing is right. But it's quite real. She tried really hard in the beginning to cut ties, to guard her heart, to put friendship first. But she met him one too many times to not fall for him. And now she's stuck. Sucks. At least we know that in this drama, it will all end okay. Maybe not so much in real life.

I get what you're saying, but I don't have as much sympathy for her as you do. Okay, so she has only had shallow relationships with men, and maybe that's down to her parents' obviously screwed up one, but she also has had Hye-jin's extremely adorable parents as role models all her life. And I'd argue that part of the reason she gets those kind of guys is because she seeks them out - she looks for love in clubs, from the kind of guys who only want the physical and nothing deeper. It doesn't make sense to suddenly turn around and expect something more from such a relationship. Although I do have to say that moment in the car when she asked that guy if they couldn't just talk about normal things was the realest one she's had so far. I really felt she was being genuine in that moment.

Still, I can't buy that someone as beautiful, rich and smart as her can't find any nice guys to date to the point where she has to resort to her best friend's first love who doesn't even know her name.

And I have to disagree with your last paragraph - she didn't try very hard at all to cut ties or put friendship first. Hye-jin says she doesn't want to hear anything more about Sung-joon and that's it? It seems to me more like she's continuously been trying very hard to find excuses not to say goodbye to him, not to confess the truth to him or to Hye-jin.

I'm on your side too. To me, she is mostly pitiful. She met Seung Joon at the beginning because Hye Jin asked for it. Then, before knowing, she started to fall for him, and now she is trying to get out of the situation with Shin Hyuk's help because it is difficult to do it alone.
Ah, telling the truth is not an option either, because it would hurt Hye Jin and make the two girls a couple of liars in front of Seong Joon. I can see how you would feel being in a fine mess in this situation.
I know she is not a role model, but she looks quite human and normal to me. She should be extraordinary strong to cut this thing straight away. C'mon, most of us would waver in front of a guy so hot and so sweet to us, even more if we are feeling hurt and lonely. I hope she realizes how wrong is the path she is taking and makes amends.

She's going to be a whole lot more lonely when she loses her life-long best friend for a guy who, ultimately, isn't actually interested in her but the person that he thinks she is (but that she in fact isn't).

Well, it won't play out like that because it's a kdrama so magically everyone will be matched with someone by the end...

Also agree with Laica, if she wants different guys than the ones that want her only for her looks & sex, she needs to step out of night clubs and maybe join a hiking club or something instead...

Tried hard? She can cut the guy off, but hasn't. Nor has she owned up to her best friend what she's doing. HJ will forgive her, but if she were my friend, I'd feel seriously betrayed. Not because I'd want the guy, but because the person I thought my life-long best friend was lying to me left and right behind my back.

I totally agree with the sentiments here. The one person I'm super worried for is HJ. The betrayal is 10x more cruel when I think of how much HJ genuinely loves her friend. It just gives the show this melo vibe and I feel so wronged for HJ. It's just not fair. The writers better make things pick up for Hye Jin because its too sad seeing her suffer.

Sorry if my rant quite long and if come up too strong, It just we are so into drama^^ no personal take truly ^^

I agree most of @kit, you point out some of really heartfelt and realest thing about what and who is HaRi as if she is a real person existed. And that, can only came up if you care and think the way best friend thinks, so genuine for me.

Lot of comments hate HaRi as the reason : If you have a more than sister-closed's friend, surrogate parents, & outer snowflake to top it off (jobs, looks, social life) all in top notch, 'HaRi' should be "grateful" enough, and feels her right as a person in her very own personal level is "taken" away by the fact her life is almost near the perfection. So what if her life near 1inch to perfection? Is it make her sin 'more' sinner if she has some greeds in her life? Is it make her 'least' deserving true love since she has it all? Is it okay placed her to 2nd seat waiting her turn to have a true love since it easier for her? Even HaRi is near perfection, she still, and forever, has the equal fairness with Hye Jin in deserving the best man in her life according to her heart.

And can't blamed her for liking SJ. The feeling is natural. Isn't she robotically love SJ (let just say isn't a resorted feeling). I bet if she can control her heart she won't let it to fall in love, isn't it what happened to all of us here when brokenhearted?

So, all scores go to HJ for being.. the opposite of Hari.

Ppl scream for equalisation in the street, but do they really do it or it just another getaway buoy-saver for those who's disadvantaged in life. For me is very double standard.
(ex : Karl Lagerfeld can't state Adele is fat in public, but Adele can half disgrace other Pop Singer saying the sticky singer using props and not real talent? I'm totally fine w/ Adele here it just my way to cover the issue)

Her lying can't be justified is 100% wrong in so many level, I just can't agree the reason to hate on HaRi.

Let's just blamed her for her lying and choose hoes-over sister kinda act.
Not making it all about who deserve SJ more or whatsoever..
As much as I hated HR & SJ's scenes, I shud clear it out why I hate her in sense way..

I'm not really sure I understand what you mean. Is it wrong to want Hari to be grateful/appreciate the people in her life that love her? And I never said that she has a near-perfect life, or that her life makes it more wrong to do what she's done than if, say, Hyejin did it. It's just wrong, period. And it surprises me that she would be willing to risk her awesome relationships with Hyejin and her family considering they're all she has, for a guy she just met.

Also, you ask if she doesn't have a right to true love, but this is not true love - he doesn't even know her real name, and she's hardly told him anything honest about herself, so doesn't know or care for the real her. As for her own feelings for him, they're all based on things he's done for her thinking she's actually Hyejin. Who knows if he would have even given her the time of day if he'd met her as Min Hari?

Also, this is in no way about who "deserves" Sungjoon more. I find that way of thinking irrelevant to romantic relationships anyway.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

It works because they'll fall in love, without the first love romanticised ideals in the way. I'm loving the scenes between them.

I do think the writers should've kept a couple of Sung Joon's worst insults in the first two episodes from airing, because that really took him from being an understandable ass to a complete and utter, cannot give him the benefit of doubt kind of ass. They alienated some viewers, and most definitely put their remaining viewers in a really angry place.

He was much cuter in Ep 3 onwards, with the front and back moments of him in the cafe, which was dealt with again in a more emotional way in Ep 4. And he is very very sweet to Hari.

In relation to Hari ... the writers were very careful to make sure that the slide down into murky waters couldn't be blamed on her so we wouldn't hate her as much. I do think that shoe scene with the ominous 'I get what I want' was too blatant - it served just as well without the obvious comment with this episode and the next.

Thank you for the recap Lollypip!

I am on my LAST nerve with Hari's lying. I know the writer has tried to set her up as pitiful and attention starved, which is why she has shallow relationships with men, but I don't feel sorry for her. The truth is, she has a best friend that she describes as "closer than a sister," a loving surrogate family that gives her all the affection of a real daughter, a great job and is amazingly beautiful. And yet she is able to betray that friend, who would probably die for her, because a guy she barely knows (whom she's belittled as a "Fatty" since they were kids) is now hot and forces her to play badminton and sends her pictures of the sky? Just, NO. And she completely disregards Hye-jin's accounts of how horrible he's been to her at work, because hey, he's nice to HARI. As long as Hari gets treated well by everyone that's what matters.

I realized something at the end of the episode as she was waiting with Shin-hyuk - Hari is a nice person in the general sense of the word, but she's a user. Who would ask a stranger two days after meeting them for such a huge and embarrassing favour, to help her with a problem she can easily solve herself by telling the truth? Just because she's too cowardly to face the fallout of her own actions. And in exchange for a fricking cup ramen and some kimchi. Not only that, he's a VIP customer at the hotel. Just WTF. But Shin-hyuk is too nice (and also weird) to turn her down.

And he's also way too good for her. Still rooting for Shin-hyuk and Hye-jin to end up together. How adorable was that whole scene at the pojangmacha? I've loved every hilarious interaction so far, but them connecting on a serious level made me SWOON. The way he said she was still pretty, just AWWW.

Sung-joon is improving slightly, but not to the point where I don't want the secret chaebol heir to get the girl for once. (I know, what am I saying? But SIWOOOOONNN.)

I'm probably one of the few that don't hate her however, I'm not impressed by her decisions in ep 5 & 6. It's wrong on many levels. The show has tried very hard to get us to feel sympathy for HR but it has also shown that HR is on a path to self-destruction. What she's doing is understandable to a point but not okay. I would be very hurt if my friend did this to me.

<Who would ask a stranger two days after meeting them for such a huge and embarrassing favour, to help her with a problem she can easily solve herself by telling the truth?

I agree... (though I don't think this is the first time this has happened in a drama – even if my mind draws a blank in terms of where I've seen a similar scenario like this before). Obviously it's a "twist" they need in the script, so that we probably get some confusion (if she claims Shin-hyuk as her fiancé and someone else already thinks she's Sung-joon's girlfriend – they are going to use that for something) and so that HR/SH end up together. It's a very predictable sort of twist, just like the oh-so-important puzzle piece that obviously has to be dropped in SJ's room. Subtlety isn't really happening in this drama....

I think the difference between this scenario and other Please-be-my-fake-boyfriend-temporarily ones we seen, is that usually the heroine is in a difficulty not of her own making (i.e. marriage obsessed parents), but here the mess is entirely Ha-ri's own. And it's not the only lie, but the last in a series of lies each to cover the last. Doesn't inspire sympathy, or the usual humourous romcom vibes of such a setup. Just discomfort.

The writer's symbolic use of uber fashionable high heels is powerful on so many levels. I believe these shoes are meant to symbolize Ha-ri's best friend's first love, Sung-joon. As a symbol they are in keeping with the fashion magazine setting, Ha-ri's trendy appearance and at first seem a little out of place for Hye-jin. High heels, in general, should always be worn with care. They are one of the major contributors of foot problems for women. Wearing the wrong size high heels would almost always guarantee future "foot" problems. This pair of high heels is the wrong size for Ha-ri. They are shown harming her feet. I wonder what size shoes Hye-jin wears? Just something to think about...

I'm pretty sure that was the show's intention with those shoes. I'm not fully convinced by the metaphoric style (in the context of the rest of the show), but just for Ha-ri's arc, it was simple, straight and worked.

And Siwon! I hate that he's enlisting soon after this and I'll wait for another two years before he does a kdrama. I know there really haven't been much growth on his character, but the little I know of is so adorable.

I'm not sure if there are still complaints about HJE's acting as I've stopped reading comments because I got annoyed at all the fuss. For me, HJE's doing a great job as Hye-jin. I love Hari too even if she has lied to Hye-jin several times now. I do think the writer is doing a good job keeping Hari's motivations realistically so I understand where she's coming from even if I don't agree with most of her actions regarding Sung-joon.

Ok, this is more like it! I'm back on board. First, HJ's screaming/overreacting seems toned down, which still makes scenes funny but not unbearable. And they have toned down SJ's meanness, while not changing his current personality 180 degrees.

I also like where they are taking the romance element, too. I almost rather SJ not find out that HJ is HIS HJ until maybe another 2-4 episodes, and I say this because if he falls in love with her, he will fall in love with the HJ she is now, not the one she was then or a combination thereof. While she is very different in many ways from her childhood self, the essential part of her personality that made her so important to him was her kindness and empathy. If this happens, then it sets up a nice conflict for him in terms of juggling who he thinks is his first love (HR), who he thinks he should be in love with, and the person who is actually drawing his attention without all the baggage of nostalgia (real HJ).

I am currently ok with the HJ/HR plot because it is the richest relationship on the show so far, and HR's complication of the lie makes her the point of conflict without making her a villain. However, it is how they handle it that will make or break the show, I think. HR has to come clean to both HJ and SJ eventually, and the order in which she handles it should also be interesting (and whether or not she actually comes clean or is found out/exposed). It's almost like she is the protagonist of a melo and HJ is the protagonist of the rom-com. But again, it's all in how it is handled.

Superficial note: Am I the only one who did not think those shoes were that cute? I was rewatching the Master's Sun yesterday and they also had some "designer" shoes that were BLAH. (Now "The Time That I Loved you"--that show had some nice footwear.)

I'm glad to see that the show has moved on a bit from keeping Sung Joon in unlikable meanness territory, and is showing him becoming aware that some things are not adding up and that he is not always mean. I did feel, that his interest in Hye Jin after so much dismissing of her was somewhat sudden, though. Did it start when he heard her voice say "It's a go!"?

Shin Hyuk is so interesting. He's rich but he's constantly free-loading and wanting pay back, short of cash and eating the cheapest food. Comparing the "Eating" in this show... Shin Hyuk is rich but eats poor, Sung Joon can afford food but never eats. Ha Ri eats and feels guilt. Only Hye Jin for all her is just normal and generous.

I'm wondering if there's a family or mummy issue to tackle as well... Shin Hyuk lost his sister and is seems separated from family, Sung Joon does not look up any family when he's back in Korea, Ha Ri may have 2 mothers...one of whom she hates and only Hye Jin has a normal family.

I'm enjoying the twisted dynamics of our main characters as they navigate the lies and lack of openness. Show, fighting! :)
What a nice resolution it would be if these four became family for each other.

I think the turnaround was in episode 4 when Hye-Jin yelled at Sung-jin. He realized he was wrong, and as flawed as Hye-jin is at her job, her strength is always being the bigger person. And the airport success was largely her doing, so he recognized it, and maybe gave her silent respect. I hope next week he apologizes for his treatment of her. I think I'll need that to be even more reassured about this drama.

Thank you, tapioca pearl, for pointing out a possible reason why SJ's attitude has changed, because I couldn't figure out where it came from. It went from him practically hating her because she's ugly to him shooting her interested looks on the sly and exercising immense patience at her spazzy mishaps. What?! It completely took me out of the drama. I went from being involved in the characters to analyzing the writing. Oh...guess the writer wanted to start SJ off really mean to make a bigger impact when he becomes "nice". Oh...guess this is the episode the writer wanted SJ to become nicer because he's losing (all) viewers' sympathies. Oh...look...it's time for SJ to start falling for HJ. But NONE of it made any sense to me. She still spazzes in front of him but all of a sudden, his responses are totally different. I shouldn't have to rely on another viewer's explanation to see the reasons behind personality change. Before reading tapioca pearl's comment, I just thought to myself sarcastically, guess he finally went grocery shopping. The writing and directly leaves much to be desired.

That leads me to PSJ's acting. He's got the whole looking-good thing down. He's also every good at his wounded looks and interested looks and serious looks. He's not wooden but he doesn't have range. He's not a bad actor by any means, but there are moments when I wish it was Ji Sung. For instance, he's in his deserted office, at night, opens up a cabinet and out pops a crazed woman wielding a mannequin arm and his response was a disinterested, oh, what are you doing here? I would have been jumping out of pants! There are other times too when I just wish he didn't cling so monotonously to his cold and superior personality, but instead injected just a little bit of special in there. I think this is a credit to the acting of the other cast members. If he was surrounded by your typical idol actors, I'd probably think he's an acting phenom.

I'm still enjoying this drama, but it has a lot of wasted potential.

I agree that SJ's interest in HJ seems sudden. I think it's partly what tapioca pearl said and also when, in episode 3, he saw her interacting with freely and normally with SH in the company lobby area. Maybe he realized there was more to her than just being a spaz.

Yes, that's true... it would have been clearer if they'd shown a flashback of him remembering how she'd saved the day at the airport to tie in with how he has started regarding her now.

And yes, he suddenly sees her being other than an incompetent fool when she's with Shin Hyuk. It must have got him wondering.

Although I thought it strange that he started noticing her as a person and not only as a maker of mistakes, I remember that I too had a colleague who fascinated me not because of anything great, but because he kept saying things that were mistaken and he was also a little incompetent... I never ceased to wonder at his thinking. LOL!

I'll be honest: a little part of me was worried that there wouldn't be enough character development going forward, but this episode re-solidifiedy faith in this show. Finally, Sung-Joon is not an ass anymore, and that facade is starting to crack.

And I continue to love Hye-Jin, who is just so full of warmth and optimism and kindness. It'd be easy to say that she is just another Candy, but Hwang Jung-Eum (who is becoming my favorite Kdrama actress) adds a special quality to Hye-Jin that makes her stand out above all Candy's. She's not a shrinking flower. She's proud of who she is and doesn't think she is less worthy because of how she looks. She gets insecure sometimes, like we all do, but it's not dangerous to her health. Which is why I'm glad she hasn't had her makeover (yet). When Shin-hyuk said she was pretty, I love that she just accepted it as a compliment, nothing more. And I love that Sung-joon is starting to be attracted to her the way she looks right now. It shows that it's really the person's heart that matters, that it's not the faces we remember or recognize about people in the long run.

Whew! I just still love the characters, and while Ha-ri's got me shaking my finger, I believe I'll still love her at the end. And Shin-hyuk is the best orabeoni. I'm hoping that his feelings for Hye-Jin remain platonic, because as cute as they'd be as a couple, I absolutely adore their friendship even more. We've talked about how rare it is in dramaland to see two female friends, it's just as rare to see a boy and girl be friends with no feelings between them.

I can now fully jump on board and ship the two leads. I totally agree with Lollypip that SJ and HJ are very well suited they balance each other out and both have a little cute craziness to them also HJ is a very caring person she notices things about others and is less wrapped up in herself especially in comparison to Ha-ri who is very self absorbed. SJ clearly has a lot of wounds and I don't confidently feel that Ha-ri could deal with that on top of her own insecurities.

Ultimately, I think Hari will make the right decision. Right now she's being very selfish because what Hari loves, Hari gets. However, I'm hoping that somewhere down the line she remembers that the person she loves the most is Hye-jin. Hopefully this is where this plot line is heading. Because I don't want to dislike Hari for very long. She needs Hye-jin more than she needs a man in her life.

On a tangent I laughed pretty hard when over the family dinner they made a wisecrack about it not being her mom who did the cooking. At first, it really bothered me that Ha Ri was going down that road of pursuing Seong Joon. But I realized, if she came to her senses (and I believe she would because she is essentially a good friend, just one that is lonely and lost at present), that this would be good character growth for her. While I don't necessarily like HR's actions, I understand temptation can be hard to resist.

I also like the dynamic of HJ's and SJ's "beginning" relationship. It leaves behind their remembered childhood love and paves the way for a more current and more matured one with their roles reversed. I love how he's starting to notice things about this HJ that reminds him of young HJ. LOVE IT!

Hari and Sung Joon are both devastated people who need a very kind, warm and others-centered person like Hye Jin in their lives to mother, care for them - its why they love her and need her so much (Hari calls her "wifey", while Sung Joon clings to his memory of Little Hye Jin as his only source of comfort and emotional stability.
Right now Hari thinks Sung Joon could be the one because he's been so warm and caring to her but the truth is, Sung Joon is as needy as Hari and when they both unwrap the truth they wont be able to provide for each other what they thought the other could for themselves.

I'm getting annoyed by the choppy writing. I think the writer is relaying on a delayed reveal of information to add juice to the show but it really falls flat. For instance, Hari's mom was assumed to be dead by the audience but she might be alive now through the scene where Hye Jins mom contacts Hari's mom? And Sung Joon stealing moments to gaze at Hye Jin at work brought a response like, "wait, since when did he start looking at her like that?" response.

Also the panic attack scene was very awkward. I was cringing when he actor was pretending to shake and bolt out of his car because it showed that he still has a lot to grow in his acting and that greenness took an edge off the impact of devastation we are supposed to feel for his character... But I was able to overlook it as soon as the camera cut to his wet face (HOT!!!!). Man, he looks good wet! Talk about working to your strengths! I also applaud the actor's focus. He may not be great yet but the scene required immense focus which he brought successfully - the shaking, the gasping for air, stumbling, and zoning out. His energy output was consistent and didnt waver.

I agree with your point on the choppiness of the show. I think part of that feeling may be due to the film editing as well. There seem to be a lot of disconnects in scenes. There really was a rush forward to show a change in feelings for Sung Joon this episode, where they could have slowly introduced it a couple of episodes back. It just didn't feel natural, but forced by the writer. But hey, I'm in it for the man-pretty, so I'll keep watching!

"I had assumed Ha-ri’s mom was dead, but I suppose she’s just gone away?"

I thought it was a kind of nostalgic sending? Like the way lots of drama characters send text to the old numbers of dead people. Don't know, though, could be alive for real!

Choi Si Won is the best, the cutest. He makes me happy when he's onscreen. And I watched this show initially for Park Seo Joon.....

Si Won's character is so adorable. I still find Hye Jin's shrieking annoying -- it wouldn't be so bad if all the characters were that over the top, but she's the only one doing it so its jarring when she does it. Si Won's character is weird -- but he's not over the top. Sung Joon keeps bumping into walls which is funny too, but again, no one but Hye Jin and that Most ahjumma head honcho is over the top. Anyway, will still watch b/c of the male leads~.

Glad the show for became better this week and actually funny, can't stand the iver the top reactions and especially the yelling,i want but just can't...Hope Sung Joon will find out who she is after he develops feelings and knows the present Hae Jin and likes what she is now not because of his image of his first love...i also like that SJ is starting to realize that something is off with Hae Ri...I am loving Shin Hyuk a lot at the moment not to mention he is so easy going and funny

PSJ and HJE had such chemistry in KMHM, but I'm not feeling it so far in this comedy. Hopefully later on.
Sung Joon is slowly becoming a nice person to Hye Jin, so I'll say he's now a half ass boss. He's a caring person when he's not at work.
Didn't know they celebrated Left Handed Day in Korea. I was born left handed which my mother deemed a curse in her Asian eyes. So I was chastised until I used my right hand. It left me totally confused. Now I have 2 left handed children and let them stay that way. Also, one of my son suffered from anxiety attacks, so I empathized with how SJ must have felt. Before I didn't feel any sympathy for SJ, so I can imagine what might have happened to him in America where his personality changed so drastically.
Ha Ri is making me frustrated in every episode. I wouldn't have a problem with her dating SJ if she admitted that she liked SJ as Ha Ri at the very beginning. Her continual lying is a betrayal of her BFF, and she could really lose her "second" family as well if she is discovered. She's spoiled heiress, and she wants what she loves no matter the consequences. Maybe those shoes will awaken her guilty conscience. Just because you want them, doesn't mean they should be yours.

I was ready to drop this drama last week because I cant stand the high pitch screaming. I am glad I stuck it out this week. That scene in the rain was awesome. Park seo joon look so good wet and sad. He needs lessons from Yoon Dong Ha on how to treat a woman, seriously.
On the topic of Ha ri, sigh, I hope she gets her sense back asap. The sisterhood is one of the good things about this drama.
I really want Hye jin to just tell Seong Joon alredy! Come on girl!

OMG! I have to agree with the majority of the comments about Hari, she uses people and is selfish. I am sure there's more to her than we've seen but the fact that she would basically turn on her "closer than a sister" best friend for a guy, who happens to be your friend's first love! And what she did episode 6? That was so mean, in my opinion. I dislike her! She needs to bow out and get shoes that fit!
I am starting to like Hye Jin just a little know. I was ready to drop this drama by episode 2 because I found her annoying but kept watching because of Si Won ?, he is the best in my opinion.

Thanks a bunch for your recap Lollypip! Thoroughly enjoy your insightful and detailed recaps. :)

I'm nuts about this show!! What a group of talented folks!

I like that we're watching SJ begin to fall for HJ "by degrees" --- the more he interacts with her, observes her and comes to know her sweetness in personality and deeds, he falls for her inner beauty first, as opposed to her outer appearance.

But then again, she has not been made to look too ugly...the ruddy facial redness has been toned down a lot, at least in this episode. Truly, other than her frizzed out hair and offbeat wackiness...and that's a tad too overdone at times...HJ's inner prettiness does shine through.

It looks like the tables are turning and it's SJ that's starting to be disconcerted and nervous around her---how good is that!?!! He's starting to feel the vibes that she's familiar somehow...the chemistry between them is beginning to sizzle the more they spend time together.

I've yet to feel any vibes of attraction to HR from him. sure he's attentive and sweet to her when they meet, but I just don't see him looking at her as a love interest. It's so obvious that HR looks at him as one!

There was such a shift in tone (? I guess) in this episode. It was a bit jarring and felt sort of unnatural, but I'm grateful for it because this is closer to what I was hoping for all along. I love how the characters are interacting with each other more and that I'm more able to enjoy the funny moments because they're not shrieking tossed in the middle of more shrieking anymore.

I enjoy the similarities between HJ and SJ that the writers have included. Both of them being the types to notice the sky and snap a pic. Both of them singing in the car when the urge strikes without caring what the person with them thinks. That sort of stuff.

And I'm loving Siwon's character. He's sort of like the Fool in that no one thinks much of him, but he's the most aware and he's the one who's always watching. It's also great to see him switch from silly to serious and back again in the space of a minute.

I love the comparisons to Hye-jin and Sung-joon too! His off-key enthusiastic singing was the best and most charming he's been ! Especially since kdrama heroes are usually presented as perfect and extreme genius or accomplished - and here he is, singing out of tune!

ANd you're so on point about Si-won's Fool character. I love when his face lights up as he turns the phrase or the emotional beat to comedy. It's a persona that the character is putting on, for sure, but such fun to watch the character, and also actor, play silly and ridiculous.

Lolabeans, we seem to share the same thoughts about this drama. It's also funny how we both thought to use the word spaz to describe HJ.

But...with respect to the similarities between HJ and SJ... aren't those SJ moments so disparate from his mean personality that they come across more as a plot device? In a well-written rom com, those similarities would have induced fairly loud squees as evidence of the OTP being SOULMATES. With this clunky writing, I'm left wondering if SJ's suffering from multiple personalities and I hope I don't cause myself any permanent damage from all that eye rolling.

Ha! No, I agree about the clunky writing and the fact that those moments come off as plot devices. I like the idea of them more than the execution.

A main issue is that the writers haven't given us many hints as to SJ's true personality. He arrived at Most with good intentions and believes the editorial team is capable of good work, but behaves like a tyrant and treats them like crap. Outside of that, we only see him with HR and he's blinded by their alleged past then.

Imagine if that **EPISODE 6 SPOILER** scene of him on the elevator after successfully escaping SH had been in one of the earlier episodes. The car singing scene would have been more believable then. Or if they'd put a moment of him stopping to stare softly at some flowers on his way to work earlier on, the sky scene would have fit more. The writers have included loaded scenes like that for HJ (ex. the waitress scene) I wish they could have done the same for SJ.

Thanks for the recap!
Ha Ri's actions make me cringe sometimes, but I always saw her as a character in an unfair situation, who was doing a favor for her best friend and got more than she bargained for. When Hye Jin asked her to pose as her in the very beginning--given the context--Hye Jin made several assumptions about her friend:
1) that just because she is pretty, Sung Joon will be happier to see her
2) that Ha Ri dates random guys all the time, so it won't faze her to meet and dump a guy in the space of a few minutes, and
3) that Ha Ri is not lonely and starved for human relationships, and therefore likely to be envious of the past Sung Joon and Hye Jin share.
Sure, Ha Ri uses people, but the whole plot of this show starts with Hye Jin using Ha Ri!
I think the show is playing the "don't judge a book by its cover" card both ways. Both lead girls are judged by their looks and expected by other characters to act accordingly.
Another thing is that Hye Jin was insisting that she doesn't want to see Sung Joon again, and then insisting that he's a jerk and nothing like his old self. So, no matter what past they had together, they are not dating nor did Hye Jin express interest in doing so. Ha Ri didn't steal anything from Hye Jin except her name, which she really needs to get cleared up soon. But if she's been valued for her looks her whole life, it would be unrealistic if she didn't cling to an identity she loves and respects more than a sister, that is lovable despite her looks. she must be terrified, that if she lets go of this identity, she will be nothing but her looks, and people will treat her accordingly.
And that's where Shin Hyuk comes in! Shin Hyuk, who likes her for who she is :D
We'll see.
For now, I am loving every single character in this drama, and rooting for them to clear things up and for friendships to endure through it all.

It was supposed to be a one time coffee meet up and then the fake Hye Jin moves to England, hardly a huge favor. Hye Jin doesn't know about any other meetings, accidental or planned.

Here for Siwon.

I agree with what that was said about the actors and scenes and motives etc. And yes, also gone down the slippery slide and started watching ep 6 so I feel kinda sad for the ladies and the effect it will prob have on their friendship when all's revealed.

But mostly Siwon.
Bwahahahaha.....

So, so glad that SJ seems to be catching on.

But Hari is starting to worry me. I hope she won't cross the line of doing a betrayal thing. I mean she's trying sure, but why don't I feel assured by her trying to sever their connection.

Although, I do feel it's a good thing that SJ knows HR as HJ because now we can see him fall in love with HJ without all the sentimentality of his memories of young HJ. I mean, he obviously put her on a pedestal and HJ is obviously more than the young girl he remembered. So, I'm giddy that he's starting to pay attention to her (because of the same qualities that attracted him at the first place) without actually knowing that she's HJ, It's like he's relearning her all over again. And plus, it makes us know that he did love her because of her character and not just her looks, that it was real.

Oh SH, I love SH and HJ together. They're so cute. And I'm totally amused that they're relationship now is brother-sister. So far I haven't seen that it would chance and that's something fresh.

This show is just so good. I'm glad that the writers made SJ a little nicer these last two eps because I am so done with cold arrogant male leads. And PSJ knows how to play goofy characters. The cast is great. I don't even see the previous brother-sister tie that the leads had. I hope we get more progression where the leads' relationship and personal development is concerned, because its been 6 eps and there hasn't really been much progress. I wait for the day when HJ stops shrinking back and really shows how professional and. l talented she can be. I'd also love to see SJ appreciate her much more and not because of who he thinks she might be. But guess it will come in time. After all, he is a very clear closed up person.

This episode was much better since some of Sung joon's assiness is subsiding. Still don't think he is worthy enough YET to be with Hye jin. Can't wait for him to learn the truth.

I bet he will have already fallen for her when he learns it and I can't wait to see the look on his face.

Love HJ and Shin Hyuk's brother and sister relationship. I'm so glad he knows the truth. It's too bad he doesn't realize yet that Hye jin and Ha Ri are best friends and live together.

Because if he had ne NEVER would have given HR that bad advice about going for Sun Joon.

Even though I agree with the majority of the opinions on this board about her. I think what she is blatantly doing to both Hye jin and Sun joon is beyond MESSED UP! And of course it's going to blow up in her face.

There is no way she is going to come clean. She is going to be busted for her lies and once she is, Sun joon is going to turn on her with the quickness and want nothing to do with her.

Kind of like when they were children and she wasn't friendly to him because of the way he looked.

She is beyond shallow and if she keeps this behavior up she is going to lose the best thing to ever happen to her, and by that I mean, Hye jin.

I still can't believe her messed up and pathetic behavior in episode six. If Hye jin ever goes in Sun joon apartment again she is going to figure out the truth and be beyond hurt.

I also LOVED the family scene when Hye jin gave her bratty sister a much needed REALIYT CHECK! It continues to boggle my mind how her sister treats her and calls her unattractive. I was thinking does she not remember how Hye jin looked at her age? And that she looks EXACTLY like her?

Except Hye jin has a much better personality and was kinder to people than her sister is.

Hopefully episode seven is memorable. From the previews it looks like it is.

Even with Ha Ri's sad life story, the show is making it a little hard for me to feel sorry for her. Whenever I see how selfless and loving HJ is I just lose the pity I'd have for HR. HR doesn't really need some guy to make her feel valued. She has a bff who cares for her like a mother would. In a way, she's basically taking advantage of whatever SJ had with HJ. She'll never be completely happy with SJ because she'll never be confident that he truly loves her. She's looking for someone to love her but she needs to love herself first.

1) I really want Hari to do the right thing because she really is the cutest thing ever. And I get that she's lonely and looking for acceptance, but my sympathy for her waned quite a bit once I saw her with Hye-jin's family and realized she's not as lonely and cut off as we thought she was. Hard to feel bad for you when you're BFF's family dotes on you more than they do their own daughter. Plus, it's good to finally see a real relationship between women in KDramas instead of the common life lesson we always get that "Pretty Rich Girls are Sneaky." I have seen Ep. 6 so I know how things are shaking out but i still have to hope that Hari really is the sweet little thing we've been seeing.

2) I've said it before and I'll say it again Siwon WINS this show. I love Shin- Hyuk soooooo much. Second Lead Syndrome is pretty rare for me because the perfect Second Lead is usually as boring and vanilla as they come. But Shin Hyuk is so much fun. Even after watching Ep 6, I can't think of any Universe where any woman in her right mind would pick Sung Joon over Shin Hyuk.

3) Also, I don't think Shin Hyuk is the secret Cheabol. I think his mystery is something else altogether. Because the Chief Editor mentioned to her nephew that they live in the same house but never eat together. I think the Sloppy Guy (Poong-ho?) is the Cheabol. That said, I wonder what Shin-hyuk's secret is.

4) So glad the acting was toned down this week. Still a little over the top but totally manageable. I found Hye-jin's behavior actually funny rather than grating. So points for that.
