Answer Me 1988: Episode 19

Here at last, here at last, finale week with answers to be had! Between the last episode and this one, I’m surprised I have any emotions left to feel—Show took them all from me, and now I’m spent. That bastard. The moment we’ve all been waiting for is finally here: Our heroine reveals her heart, and half of us will cheer and half of us will cry ourselves to sleep. Grab a tissue, hold a friend’s hand, and let’s face the music together.

EPISODE 19: “You did your best”

January 2016. Deok-sun and Husband record another portion of their interview, and they don’t know how to answer the question about who asked the other out first. Deok-sun says that it happened gradually, and mentions that nowadays people date and kiss and just call it “some” if they’re not officially dating. Husband is shocked at that, and they both mention learning this stuff from “the kids,” though they don’t say if it’s their kids.

They’re asked when their first kiss was, and they exchange adorable looks. Husband suggests saying it together on the count of three, and Deok-sun says, “1994!” Husband: “1989… 1994! That’s what I said, 1994!” Guess someone’s in the doghouse tonight.

We go back to 1994, where everyone has some version of tofu for dinner because the tofu man came through the neighborhood. Deok-sun’s mom worries about how much Dad is working, but he says that he has to work hard to stay useful when he’s a senior employee who only has a high school diploma. He tells Mom that he doesn’t intend to quit, and only mentioned retirement because he was working so hard on that last case. Mom smiles gratefully.

Taek eats too, and bursts into laughter at Mom and Dad sitting across the table just staring at him like they’re trying to memorize his face and drink him in before he goes poof. They’re so cute.

He’s leaving for another match in Beijing that night, which is where Deok-sun’s next flight is headed too. Her co-worker brings up the famous Choi Taek and asks why Deok-sun doesn’t date him if they’re so close. Deok-sun clarifies that they’re just friends and have been for twenty years. The co-worker asks, “So… why aren’t you dating?”

The moms watch TV and talk about how cute Yoo Dong-geun oppa is, and Jung-hwan’s mom points out that he’s ten years younger than them. Sun-woo’s mom insists that the rules are, if he’s handsome, he’s oppa. Yup, them’s the rules.

The others tease Sun-woo’s mom about calling Taek’s dad “oppa,” and they wonder how a handsome boy like Taek came from a man like him. Sun-woo’s mom swears that Taek’s dad looked exactly like Taek in his youth, and the others decide she’s lost her mind.

We don’t realize until now that Dong-ryong’s mom is there with them, because now she’s staying at home to help take care of her grandchildren instead of working. The other moms suppose that she’s bored of being at home all the time when she used to work so much, but she says it’s okay and rushes off to tend to the kids.

Taek heads all the way down to the air force base to see Jung-hwan, who runs up to him with a giant smile.

Up in Seoul, Bora visits Sun-woo at the hospital and waits nervously for him to tell her what he’s decided about giving her a second chance. He looks very stern and serious, which makes her doubly nervous, but then he finally says that he has three conditions, and if she says okay to all of them, they can date again.

The first is that he’s going to stop using jondae with her, and stop calling her noona if they date. She doesn’t look pleased, but agrees to let him use banmal with her, and he cracks the tiniest grin for a split second.

Second, he asks what Bora considers first place in her life. She thinks it over and admits, “Me.” Sun-woo says, “Now it’s me.” He isn’t asking to always come first all the time, but he doesn’t want to be cast aside when things get rough for her and she chooses herself again. Ouch. Sun-woo says, “I would just like to be one of the important things in your life,” and admits that he was badly scarred.

Bora agrees to the first two conditions and prods for the third, so Sun-woo says that if they start back up again, he wants to date with the next step in mind. Oh, he means marriage, doesn’t he? He tells her not to start at all if she’s afraid of the next step, which gives her pause. She asks for time to think it over.

Jung-hwan takes Taek out to lunch near the base, and Taek marvels when two petty officers salute Jung-hwan on their way in. It’s okay, Taekie, I find it hot too. Jung-hwan asks what brings him all the way down here, and he can tell right away from Taek’s hesitation and serious tone that he’s about to bring up the 20-year-old elephant in the room.

Taek brings up Jung-hwan’s wallet and says he opened it back in the day, and Jung-hwan cuts him off, scoffing at him for bringing up something so far in the past. Agh, why do you always cover up your heartache with jokes? It pains me so.

Jung-hwan: “Go grab Deok-sun. Frustrating moron.” No, that’s YOUR NAME, you frustrating moron! Taek reads between every line though, and the way he smiles at Jung-hwan is just so perfect, like he sees it all and truly appreciates his friend. But Taek surprises him by saying that he didn’t come here for that, and then it’s his turn to scoff at Jung-hwan for thinking he came down just to talk about Deok-sun. But… what else are you here to talk about then?

Back at home, Jung-hwan’s mom tells the others that she thinks she’s menopausal. They realize that they’re at that age now, and Deok-sun’s mom worries that it’ll be hard on her. Jung-hwan’s mom insists that it’ll be liberating, and intends to face it head-on.

So she tells Dad and Jung-bong about it, and declares that she’ll still cook, but not do the dishes, and she’ll still clean, but not do the laundry. Dad and Jung-bong jump to say that they’ll do everything, and that puts a smile on Mom’s face.

Jung-bong even calls Jung-hwan to alert him about Mom, and to remind him to call home often for her sake. Jung-hwan wonders if they should be doing more for Mom, and sighs that it’d be better if she had a daughter for stuff like this. Who needs a daughter when she has a son like you? Jung-bong asks if Jung-hwan is eating well and isn’t lonely, and makes sure he can come home next month for Mom’s birthday.

Then he calls Mi-ok, who tells him excitedly that she’s meeting up with the girls at their old ddukbokki haunt. She worries that Deok-sun and Ja-hyun will have gotten so pretty that she won’t recognize them, and Jung-bong insists that those two girls just tell each other that to make themselves feel better.

Mi-ok is the one who changed the most, and Deok-sun and Ja-hyun gape at her the next day, wondering when she became so pretty. They’re hurt because she didn’t call them once over the last six years, but Mi-ok says that she couldn’t call because she missed them too much, and just looking at pictures of them made her cry. They all burst into tears and eat ddukbokki while crying.

Jung-bong and Dad keep to their word and do all the cleaning around the house while Mom sips tea. Deok-sun’s mom brings cabbage by and tells Jung-hwan’s mom about Dong-ryong’s brother opening a second restaurant nearby. She jokes that sending their kids to Seoul University is useless when Dong-ryong will make the most money of all of them because he’s so good at running a business. Even Dong-ryong’s dad admits that he regrets hitting him so much for not studying in school.

That evening, almost all the kids come home for the weekend. Sun-woo, then Bora, then Taek. He hesitates in front of his gate and turns towards Deok-sun’s house, but then he whirls around again and just goes home. Deok-sun arrives a minute later.

Sun-woo waits on pins and needles until Bora leaves a message for him to come outside. Deok-sun’s mom wonders where both the girls ran off to, and No-eul says that he thinks Bora is dating someone. Mom perks up immediately because she was worried about Bora not caring about anything but work, and when No-eul says that it has to be someone in this neighborhood (because she’s home so often lately), they run through the possibilities.

They figure it can’t be Jung-hwan because he’s away, though Mom says she’d be happy with Jung-hwan. She doesn’t look as enthused about Jung-bong, and Dong-ryong has a girlfriend. Both Mom and No-eul are the most excited about Taek, but then Mom remembers that Taek is afraid of Bora, so he’s out. No-eul says that leaves only one person, but then suddenly Mom’s smile fades as she says, “It can’t be Sun-woo. All the others are okay, but it can’t be Sun-woo. You know why.” What? Why?!

Bora waits out by the steps, and aw, she’s wearing the necklace. Sun-woo looks like he’s bracing himself as he walks toward her, but halfway there he spots the necklace around her neck and relaxes. He marches right up to her and yanks her around the corner to make out, and afterwards she laughs at him for not even waiting for her answer.

He points out that she shouldn’t have worn the necklace then, and she says sweetly, “Sun-woo-ya, Sung Sun-woo, thank you. I love you.” Wait, his last name is Sung too? Are they… related? No, that can’t be it. What the?

Sun-woo runs home and bursts into Taek’s room to tell him the good news that he and Bora are back together after six years, but Taek’s expression stays stiff and awkward, and Sun-woo’s excitement peters out as he wonders why he’s not getting the reaction he wants.

Taek silently nods to point to the other side of the room, and Sun-woo turns around to find Deok-sun and Dong-ryong sitting there with their jaws on the floor. LOL. They call him a crazy bastard and Deok-sun can’t believe it wasn’t just a one-sided love. Dong-ryong does a double take at that because he didn’t even know about Sun-woo’s crush in the first place.

Jung-hwan happens to call right then and Dong-ryong tells him too. Hilariously, Dong-ryong fixates on the fact that everyone but him knew that Sun-woo liked Bora, and he’s so hurt that he gets all dramatic and says he’s not really a friend if he was the only one who didn’t know. Poor Dong-ryong looks like he’s going to cry.

Taek lies and says he didn’t know either, and Dong-ryong narrows his eyes and points out that Sun-woo came rushing in here to tell Taek, and wonders again why anyone loses to him in baduk, ha. They gasp when Sun-woo jumps to Bora’s defense and calls her by name instead of noona, and Taek escapes before the other two pummel Sun-woo for keeping secrets.

Deok-sun has a layover in Beijing the day before Taek’s match, and when she hears from his baduk teacher that he hasn’t eaten anything, she brings over a thermos of porridge that she brought from home. Teacher tells her to drop it off herself, and she jokes that he shouldn’t see her before a big match because he’ll get too fluttery with excitement. He agrees because Taek likes Deok-sun so much, and she points out that she was kidding. Teacher says he wasn’t.

The news reports that banks all over the country are laying off workers and pushing older employees into early retirement, and Deok-sun’s mom worries about Dad hanging onto his job.

Deok-sun waits and waits outside Taek’s baduk match, and finally gets tired of pacing and asks Teacher to call up to her room when it’s over. She waits anxiously by the phone all day, and is surprised when Taek calls himself. She tells him to rest, but he says he’s hungry and asks her to dinner.

She gets dressed up and waits in the lobby, and Taek beams when he sees her. He pets her on the head like always and they head out, but they both look disappointed when they run into the rest of their party and are forced to go eat in one big group.

Dinner is pretty uneventful, but Deok-sun’s roommate gets drunk and heads in early, which leaves Deok-sun without a key late that night. She pounds on the door but there’s no answer, and no one’s at the front desk to give her another key. So she sits in the lobby, and Taek happens to spot her while he’s outside to smoke a cigarette.

She tells him to go up because she just needs to wait for another key, but he tells her to sleep in his room. It’s a giant suite, so he tells her to take the bedroom while he sleeps on the couch. She tries to take the couch, but he insists he wouldn’t be able to sleep comfortably that way, and it won’t matter once he takes his sleeping pills anyway.

She gasps to see how many pills he’s taking these days, and warns that if he takes too many, he’ll start sleepwalking and doing crazy things in his sleep. He laughs and says he’s not that far gone, then jokes, “You never know though. Lock your door tonight. I don’t know what I’ll do.”

Deok-sun: “Why, are you going to kiss me again?” Omo. It was real! Taek freezes and finally says, “It… wasn’t a dream.” He looks over at her, and she avoids his gaze nervously. He asks why she lied about it, and she admits, “I was scared. We’re friends. What if it became awkward?”

A tear trickles down his cheek. Aw, Taek. She says that she can’t imagine things ever being awkward between them. He wipes his tear away and seems to accept it, but then he turns to ask, “What about now?”

Deok-sun finally meets his eyes, and says, “It would be awkward now too… But…” OMO. BUT? BUT?!

Taek doesn’t even wait for her to finish her sentence, and leaps to his feet to kiss her. Damn, this boy is a closer. Her eyes flutter closed as he kisses her again and again. Wow, that conversation did not go the way I thought it was going.

We return to 2016, with Deok-sun and Husband offscreen. She asks how he could say their first kiss was in 1989, and he argues that it’s the right date. She points out that she was just a high-schooler back then, and he apologizes for not remembering since he didn’t go to school(!). He doesn’t think it’s that big a deal, but she doesn’t like the picture it paints, and insists on asking to rerecord that part of the interview.

TAEK. IT’S TAEK. OMG. I’m partly just relieved to finally know, and partly heartbroken for Jung-hwan. I thought I cried all of the tears already, but apparently not.

We flash back to that first kiss, when Taek took sleeping pills and passed out. Deok-sun got up to go home, but then decided to linger a while and sat nearby just watching Taek sleep. This time we see the scene without the fuzzy dream halo, when he opened his eyes and saw her there, and swooped in for a kiss.

Deok-sun was up all night afterwards unable to sleep a wink, and in the morning she came out and practiced how to greet Taek. That’s so cute. But when she came out to the street and told him that she went home right away last night, he’d said aloud that he was relieved it was just a dream. She clammed up about it after that, and he just believed it was a dream.

Back in 1994, Deok-sun has managed to get back into her hotel room, and she tosses and turns and kicks her feet madly under the covers because she can’t contain her happiness. And Taek is sound asleep without taking a single sleeping pill.

Jung-bong and Mi-ok meet for another date, and when she sees him talking about samgyupsal so animatedly, she suggests he quit studying law and do something foo-related. She remembers Deok-sun saying that Jung-bong made the best ramyun she’d ever tasted. Mi-ok says that her father made her go study abroad and learn fashion, but she’d like it if Jung-bong did what made him happy in life.

After their date, we finally get to meet Mi-ok’s scary father… Ha, it’s Go Chang-seok? He’s a cuddly teddy bear! He’s not a gangster at all, but a businessman who runs a successful fabric/tailor shop that has multiple branches, and now that Mi-ok is no longer in high school, he’s totally cool with her dating.

Deok-sun’s mom waits up that night wondering what’s keeping Dad so long, and finally heads outside to wait in the street. She finds just sitting outside, and he tells her solemnly that the bank forced him to retire today. He tells her that he’s sorry and Mom spills tears, but she sits by his side and holds his hand, and tells him that he has nothing to be sorry for.

Jung-hwan’s dad wakes up in the middle of the night to find Mom sitting in the dark. He’s worried about her and asks if she’s okay, and she just quietly admits, “I’m not okay. I’m not okay.” He goes over to her and puts an arm around her and just holds her that night.

Deok-sun’s parents tell all the kids about Dad’s early retirement, and Dad tells them it was his idea to take the extra pension bonus while they were offering it. Jung-hwan’s dad pops by to talk to Deok-sun’s mom, and later the dads gather at Taek’s dad’s store and Jung-hwan’s dad says he got kicked out of the house.

Deok-sun’s dad says that it’ll happen from time, and remembers his wife throwing some punches last year when she went through menopause. Jung-hwan’s mom doesn’t even know why she blew up at her husband earlier, and says she’ll just be irrationally angry one minute and then crying the next.

Deok-sun’s mom says she still dumps a bucket of cold water on her head before going to bed, and that it’ll get better. The other two moms envy her for having daughters at a time like this, especially one like Deok-sun. Sun-woo’s mom says she’d love to have her for a daughter-in-law. Good, ’cause you’re about to.

In flashback we see Deok-sun’s mom go through depression the year before, but Deok-sun came home all the time to force Mom out of bed and take her out on mommy-daughter dates.

She painted Mom’s nails and lifted her mood, and Dad even got jealous of all the attention, muttering that he wanted to be born a mom in his next life. So Deok-sun painted Dad’s nails too, LOL. She left medicine on Mom’s nightstand with little notes, and Mom was so touched to be taken care of in that way.

The news reports on Taek’s big win in Beijing, and Deok-sun runs out the minute Taek calls. No-eul thinks it’s suspicious, but Bora tells him to mind his own business. Taek grabs Deok-sun’s hand and pulls her toward him, and they cuddle like that right in the middle of their street.

Deok-sun says that Dad’s retirement ceremony is tomorrow, and she can already feel the tears coming. Taek hugs her and asks if he can go too, but she tells him to stay home because he’ll become the center of attention if he comes, and tomorrow is Dad’s day. Aw, I love that she’s that thoughtful. Taek tries to wheedle an invite anyway, but she puts her foot down and he complies very obediently. Okay, that’s adorable.

Mom dresses Dad in his best suit the next morning, and when they step outside, Jin-ju and her parents are outside with a bouquet of flowers at the ready, and Jung-hwan’s parents run out with flowers too. They all congratulate Deok-sun’s dad on a job well done, and he heads off to work for the last time.

Bora tells Sun-woo about it afterwards, and she complains that the bank held the most cursory ceremony for the thirty employees who were retiring, and didn’t even give a single gift or plaque to acknowledge Dad’s thirty years of dedication to his job. In the background, we hear Deok-sun arrive and raise a stink, and the three siblings hunch over Bora’s desk to take matters into their own hands.

Jung-hwan calls home and tells Jung-bong not to wait up because he’ll get in very late that night, and he worries when Jung-bong says he’s not sure whether Mom is okay. Jung-hwan sighs that Mom could really use a daughter, and declares himself the second daughter who’s on his way.

But even still, Jung-hwan isn’t prepared when he comes home to find Mom sitting in the dark with a sad, faraway look in her eyes. She doesn’t have the usual reaction to his arrival and just goes to bed, and he’s even more worried to discover every single family photo in their house turned around or put face-down. He puts them all back the way they’re supposed to be, and lingers on his parents’ old wedding photo.

Jung-hwan runs into Sun-woo in the street early the next morning, and Jung-hwan jabs him as he asks how things are going with Bora. Sun-woo just smiles sheepishly.

Jung-hwan is frustrated that no one seems to have any good ideas for a restaurant for Mom’s birthday dinner tonight, when Dong-ryong calls asking him to bring everyone he knows to his restaurant. He had a huge wedding party cancel at the last minute because the bride ran off with her first love (okay, don’t say things like that!) and doesn’t want the food to go to waste. Dong-ryong offers to change the wedding cake to a birthday cake, but Jung-hwan tells him to leave it as it is because he has an idea.

Group by group, everyone in the cast files into Dong-ryong’s restaurant, and Bora and Sun-woo stop to smile at each other, and Taek and Deok-sun do the same. Dong-ryong and his brother seem concerned about their mom, but we don’t hear any specifics. Jung-hwan’s family is the last to arrive, and Jung-hwan pulls Dad aside and whispers something in his ear.

While they sneak off into a side room, a server spills a plate of kimchi all over Jung-hwan’s mom, and mentions that they do have something she could change into. Jung-hwan makes sure that Dong-ryong has the cake and music ready and tells Hyung to be the flower girl, and when he tries to hand off bouquet duty to someone else, Dong-ryong makes him do it because this was his idea. In classic Jung-hwan fashion, he complains but does it anyway.

Dong-ryong enlists Deok-sun’s mom to help coax Jung-hwan’s mom out of the back room, and she comes out wearing a pretty evening gown and feeling silly because she’s now way overdressed for dinner. But then wedding music begins to play, and Dad steps out in a tuxedo and walks down the aisle toward her.

Mom bursts into tears and laughs and cries the whole time, as Jung-hwan hands her a bouquet and Jung-bong sprinkles flower petals in their path. They walk down the aisle together as everyone cheers and chants for them to kiss, and then Dong-ryong wheels out a wedding cake and a photographer takes pictures of the family.

Afterwards Mom asks whose idea this was, and Jung-bong pats Jung-hwan on the back and answers, “Your daughter.” Dad asks how he knew that their wedding photo was fake, because Mom and Dad were convinced that they’d never find out. Aw, were they too poor for a real wedding? And that’s why Jung-hwan did this? Could you possibly be any sweeter?

Mom says that she’s all better now thanks to him, and then bursts into tears all over again. Jung-hwan gets all gruff about the tears and Dong-ryong has to yell at him to keep his mouth shut.

At the next table over, Deok-sun’s dad says it’s nothing to cry about, which is when Deok-sun hands him a present to commemorate his retirement. He opens it up to find a large plaque, and when Jung-hwan’s dad gets too teary-eyed to read it, Deok-sun read it aloud.

It thanks Dad for his years of service to the bank, and says that even though he’ll no longer be called by his job title, he’ll always be Mom’s husband and proud father to Bora, Deok-sun, and No-eul. It lists Dad’s favorite foods, his favorite activities like buying random things and kissing his children, and says, “But what our Dad loves most is his family.”

Deok-sun begins to cry, and so does just about everyone else. “As your daughters, as your son, we’re sorry for not giving you a warm word, for not sharing a drink with you, for not being able to hug you first, for not saying ‘I love you,’ and for not being able to fathom the weight of the name Dad.” It’s signed from each of them, thanking him for being “the dad Bora respects, the dad who’s like a friend to Deok-sun, and the dad that No-eul depends on.”

Of course, the only dry eye in the house is Dad himself, who does not cry in public. He wonders in his grumpy way why they insisted on reading that aloud and bringing the mood down, so Dong-ryong’s dad signals for music and starts chanting for Jung-hwan’s mom to come out and dance. In no time it’s a party again.

Deok-sun’s parents sit outside that night and reflect on how quickly the years have passed, and Dad says he realized tonight that he was so fixated on the leaves falling that he forgot new fruit would appear. He says that he might’ve gotten laid off from the bank, but did one hell of a job raising his kids.

Mom nods in agreement, though she reminds him that there’s always time for one of them to give them a hard time about something. He laughs and says that one day their children will know their parents’ hearts and answer.

The next day, the moms are gathered and Dong-ryong’s mom says she’s starting work as a cashier at the nearby supermarket. She admits that she ran away from home a few weeks ago, and only just returned last night. She says with a sigh that she didn’t like the idea of her whole identity being Dong-ryong’s mom, and one day as she was taking care of her grandchildren and just couldn’t handle it.

The moms realize now that Dong-ryong’s dad was home because he was taking care of the kids, and we see him in flashback, calling to make sure that Mom was okay at her sister’s house and just taking care of the babies on his own so that she could rest all she wanted.

Bora comes home and drops off some fruit on her way in, and both Mom and Sun-woo’s mom notice a gold band on her finger. Jung-hwan’s mom asks if Bora isn’t going to marry, and Mom says she thinks Bora is dating someone right now.

Two seconds later, Sun-woo comes by with pastries for his mom, and ack, he’s wearing the matching ring. It does not go unnoticed by the two moms, who suddenly aren’t smiling anymore. Uh-oh.

COMMENTS

*CRACK* There goes my heart. I can’t believe I had to go through that a second time. Why, Jung-hwan-ah, why? Why did you tug at every single one of my heartstrings and then just give up? The last episode was such a blow that I was waiting for the big reversal today, thinking that he couldn’t just fold like that with one confession, that it couldn’t be the end. I’m still a little bit in denial, but what can you do when Deok-sun has made her choice? Obviously it’s a case where no one would fault her for choosing either of them, but no matter how much I love Taek as a character, I’m more heartbroken for Jung-hwan and his epic one-sided love.

I’m convinced that this writer is just sadistic with her love for the guy who doesn’t get the girl. She did it once with Chilbongie, and I thought he couldn’t be topped until Jung-hwan came along. It was probably a trap all along to rely on the fact that he was written in every way to be the typical leading man, but it’s not like anything would’ve stopped me from rooting for him anyway. I was just a goner from the moment he started crushing on her. He made petty, childish first love swoony and the bromance just as heart-wrenching as the romance. I just can’t help feeling like he was written as the lead with the bait-n-switch in mind, which hurts in a whole new way because I feel like I was led down this path so that the heartbreak would land with maximum pain. I know he’s a good person and a good friend for stepping back when he knew he’d already lost his chance with Deok-sun, and I know that it matters more that Deok-sun loves Taek now and chooses him. I just need to cry some more about it, is all.

I did love FINALLY, FINALLY seeing Deok-sun show her feelings, which were kept at a distance from us for so long to keep the damned husband mystery alive, that I stopped caring much about her feelings in all of this. It was refreshing to be privy to that side of her that we hadn’t seen since her very first high school crushes on Sun-woo and Jung-hwan, and once we got to see her getting excited for Taek’s call and getting dressed up to go meet him for dinner, it was obvious where her heart was. I hope there’s more of it coming, because her side of the romance got shortchanged for it to remain a mystery, and though I get that this is what keeps us on the hook, now I want to see her feelings develop more concretely, whether it’s through more flashbacks or future conflict in her relationship with Taek.

I still didn’t expect their first-kiss conversation to go the way it did though, because it sounded like a rejection at first, the way she said she lied because she didn’t want there to be awkwardness between them. Taek took it like a rejection too, but it just goes to show that the guy who fights to the end gets the girl, because he risks getting rejected all over again to ask her plainly how she feels now, and she throws a curveball at him and at us. And no matter how heartbroken I am about Jung-hwan, I could never complain about Taek being so bold as to go after the love of his life, and seize the moment when she opens her heart to him. And of course they’re adorable together, but that’s always been the case.

As always with this show, the family stories are what really move me. There was a bittersweet thread in today’s stories about Deok-sun’s dad’s retirement and Jung-hwan’s mom’s menopause, and it felt like an entire episode dedicated to aging and mourning one’s youth gracefully. I’m constantly floored by all the ways that these kids step up and care for their parents in little ways, but none more than Deok-sun and Jung-hwan. It’s touching to see how different it was for Deok-sun’s mom to go through menopause and depression because she had a daughter who knew her needs without having to be told, but then I was doubly moved when Jung-hwan overcame that deficiency anyway and found a way to lift Mom’s spirits and show her how much she’s loved. He’s just… he’s not real, this guy.

And who knew that the final mystery would be Sun-woo and Bora’s, or more specifically what reason their parents would have for opposing their marriage. It must have something to do with Sun-woo’s father, and his death? I expected Sun-woo’s mom to dislike Bora for her prickly personality, but this goes beyond that, and her mom seems more opposed to the match, which makes me even more curious. I’m sure they’ll work it out—we only have one episode left to tie up all our loose ends, marry off the couples, and find Jung-hwan someone perfect. Ugh, nope. Not there yet. Still in denial. Maybe a drink (or ten?) will help.

My ship may have sunk, but this show did it the right way: it proved that Duk Seon and Taek really love each other and are good for each other, and it made me see the error of my shipping ways. It didn't do it at the cost of trashing another character. Jung Hwan is allowed to heal and learn as most of us do with our first loves.

I feel like I'm ending one of my favorite novels-- maybe Our Mutual Friend. I love this street and all the friends and families, and I will miss them!

Seriously, I come back to stable wifi and this? I'm supposed to be packing for flying for a work trip tomorrow! Instead, I'm sitting at the computer and crying while typing in the comments section of Dramabeans.

I don't know how this show does it - but week after week, it makes me cry but in such a good heartache way. The stories are always so moving, there's so much love in this community. I think I'm more broken that the show is almost over - what would we do now?

I guess the only thing to do is if I ever am sick and depressed - I'll just stay home and marathon this to feel hope in life and humanity again!

Is someone from TeamJunghwan in a relationship right now? Applying this to real life, I think I'm engaged to someone like Taek... not in the sense that he can't take care of himself but I am engaged to the guy who I fell for unexpectedly and the guy who pursued me and made me happy... I may have met someone like Junghwan before who bullied me to ends.. I may have been attracted to him but it never progressed because until now, I am still thinking... Did he like me or did he not? Until now, I don't know... but I am where I am right now... I realized my feelings and I'm happy with my own Taek :)

He seems like soft-hearted guy who cries easily. I remember Ryu Joon-yeol/Jung-hwan was worried Park Bo-geum might cry before doing the scene together when he tied Taek's shoes (Let alone when they did the rehearsal for Taek's birthday scene, Park Bo-geum cried, and people passed tissues out to him without a word).

Here's are details of his fan meet I found on Soompi:

Today (Jan.16) there was Park Bo Gum's fan meeting. He told a lot of interesting things, but since it's a drama thread, I post something related to R1988.

Bogum didn't apply audition, he was picked up. He got a phone call from the PD Shin. The day at the behind story video, when he was asked if he drinks, smokes, curse, that was the first meeting. The script wasn't made perfectly, the director Shin let him read various characters. And the director said Taek suited him the most, but real Bogum is quiet and upright person. The scriptwriter modified Taek's character to more innocent, quiet, upright person. That's how Taek was created. On the second meeting, he was requested to study baduk.

(It's not from today, it's from other interviews: So he applied baduk class at this (2nd half of 2015) semester at his university. Since he's majoring musical acting at university, he is taking ballet class in this semester. He said this is the reason why he should eat a lot.)

He said he would go to Phuket on Monday(Jan.18) with R1988 staffs.

Today, he hugged a fan with his jacket, like Taek did in ep19.

Common things and different things between Taek and Bogum: Common thing is to focus on one thing. Different thing is, "Taek is good at skinship, but I'm not. (LOL) And Taek eats a little, but I'm not." And he said he likes cooking and sewing (LOL). The MC said, "I saw yesterday's episode, you pushed the chair very vigorously!" Bogum was very embarrassed, couldn't raise his head.

If he is in situation like Taek & Junghwan, two old friends love one girl, Bogum couldn't answer quickly. One fan from the audience shouted at him, "Live your own life!" then Bogum burst into laughter.

His manager filmed him at the drama location without his awareness, and 95% of times, he was eating something. He is a real heavy eater. He opened his bag on the stage, there were many snacks. LOL (really different from Taek)

Go Kyung Pyo came as a guest, he said, "Bogum is not good for a boyfriend, he is good for a husband."

At the video greeting from Ryu Junyeol and Lee Dong Hwi, "If Lightsaber is in Star Wars, we have Park Bo Gum(=sword) in R1988"

He doesn't drive, has no plan of buying a car. Everyday he takes school bus to the school, and takes subway on the way home. Because he has to sleep at school bus. When he was asked what is in the wall paper of his phone, it was school class timetable of this semester. (good student!) He said, to him, a dating is 'to fulfill something lack to each other' (It reminds Taek & Deoksun relationship).

Also he's a student as well and he wasn't that big of a star so he might want to save. Although I suspect as his popularity increases everyday, he may need to drive since he won't be able to get anywhere with fans all over the place. I'm actually very happy for him. From his crying at the fan meeting, it seems like a dream come true for him :)

I still feel as though the husband is JH. Back in episode 9 when DS and her husband were talking about when the photograph was taken, the husband pointed out the date in the corner of the photo, and if you look at the two photographs of DS with JH and CT separately, the one with the date is with JH. Plus, the 2015 characters act a lot like DS and JH did as teenagers. I can't imagine CT ever suggesting to the love of his life that she isn't pretty like she used to be either...

I think he said it all in good fun, not in a mean-spirited kind of way.

Dude, did you actually see how sweet future Bora was speaking with her husband? Bora. Sung Bora who mostly scream at people and is feared in the neighborhood as the crazy bitch. People can change.

They're married for a decade probably, they're probably already even more comfortable with playing with each other.

Best kiss ever... On par with healer kiss! Taek and DS have great chemistry. He adored her since the beginning of the series and he took a leap of faith by confessing/admitting to his friends about his feelings.

I rooted for him (partially coz I loved him as Min in IRY) early on coz he seemed like the underdog and it's so obvious she was the only person he truly loved.

JH is cute, dorky and sincere but he was always hesitant in taking the next step. Moreover, I think the scenes between Taek and DS are so full of fun, appreciation and openness. They just love every minute of companionship and friendship they had. So yeah they deserve each other.

And I love DS. She may not have held the greatest academic IQ in a kdrama but she was spot on in doing the right things for the ppl around her. She was selfless, sweet and sensible. I don't agree with ppl saying JH was too good for her. It's ok to feel sad for JH but we can't blame DS for caring and loving Taek. In the sleeping episode, he ignored her but she chose to be by his side, clearly seeking her own heart and she found the reply she needed.

Her character and all the major characters are very well written and the actors are doing brilliant jobs in Reply 1988. I love this show! Seriously I will watch the kisses again and again.

Heartbreaaaaak! Jung Hwan is such a great person that he doesn't deserve to get his heart crushed in this way! I really wanted to see him win in life. The problem was he was too passive and so damned shy when it came to expressing his feelings! No offense to taek fans but I don't find his character a very romantic one. Or maybe I just can't picture why Ds would want to live a life with a man with high iq but no common sense and needs to be cared for all the time. It's just not very manly. I like PBG but hate how helpless he comes off in this series. Also tk and adult taek don't seem very similar at all. Husband seemed much more like Jung Hwan in character

#TeamTaek

I caught bits of the show on tv but didn't really want to invest in it until I saw more of Taek. Like other typical kdramas, Junghwan seems to be the male lead with his aloofness, secret acts of love, cold actions warm heart, etc. But as I saw more of Taek, it makes much more sense to marry someone like him. Even I would want to marry Taek in real life, how could Deoksun not? To have one man devoted to you, depend on you, protect you, stand up for you, is honest about his feelings for you in front of his friends, love you completely and find your goofy actions cute, etc. How can Taek not be a good choice?

To compare him with Junhwan, did they both not step back for the other person when they found out that their friend likes the same girl? After 6 years, it's fair game again. Well, the one who risks his heart, doesn't hesitate to choose his love over anything else, and makes her smile, deserves the girl.

I'm so happy that Taek got his love reciprocated even when he doesn't get as much screen time as Junghwan, and looks to be the 2nd lead from the beginning. They are great together, and I will enjoy rewatching their cute scenes again and again.

I just read all the comments and i just shake my head at alot of people belittling deoksun.she's been pushing herself to Jungpal, but the guy just wont confess!what she gonna do?so,she just stop putting herself in an embarrassing position of going after a person she was not sure if he really likes her.there are plenty of fishes in the sea.so she dated guys in college!look, did jungpal do something about that?this guys she's dating are not his friends,he have no obligation to step aside for them, yet he still did not confess!he just stood on the sideline and let her date other guys.i would understand him being a noble idiot for taek but to the other people too?he clearly did not love her enough to fight for her.all those years taek didnt do anything to pursue her,he could have done it.he had lots of chances with her, instead he just teased deoksun about this guys shes dating like didnt give a fuck.
and now people hated her?why?do people wanted her to wait for him?when most of the time he looked uninterested with her?of course she'd move on!smh
I love jungpal, too.but he waited too long.

Buuut, there's still 1 episode left.the writer can still troll us and jungpal and deuksun could still end up together.*shrug*

Idc about deoksun's husband hunting.we're too focus on her the we forgot the whole picture.like the families whoake this drama unforgettable.i love all the cast specially the parents.let's not forget them.

i think the ratings dropped cuz many people (#teamjungpal) probs boycotted the ending by refusing to watch lol.

i've seen many jungpal fans saying they're not gonna finish the series. as a jung[al myself, i'm abit ashamed to say (since i friggin LOVE PBG) that i'm not gonna finish the series either. i stopped at ep. 16 acually and have just been reading recaps. i'll probs watch ep. 18 (saying goodbye to my first love *tear tear*) because it's jungpal centered and i think it's basically his "closure" episode. it's that episode the writer dedicated to him cuz she knows jungpal fans are fire and won't stand it if he doesn't get SOME kind of wrapup (mainly with himself).

as proud of jungpal as i am for his being mature enough to graciously bow out for those that he loves, i still worry about his character. he always prioritizes others and gives love and care to others BUT who prioritizes and cares for him? sure his family (that's a given) but i'm saying outside of that? this guy is such a giver i'm just really sad he's not getting the happy ending he deserves (THE ENDING THAT WE THE AUDIENCE THINK WE DESERVE TO SEE AS WELL. since we basically was with him every step of the way and came to care for him so much, gosh. lol) and this ending doesn't have to be DS x jungpal, it just has to be jungpal fids true happiness and not have that air of sadness anymore :(

i think i just resonate with his character so much because he's so relatable to so many ppl. he's always too scared to let go (open up) and always a few steps too late. it's heart-breaking but it's poignant and so beautiful. i just wish DS could've seen how much jungpal cared about her, as much as we the audience did. ohwells.

anyway, team jungpal till i die. JUNGPALLED FOR LIFE.

well, can't blame anyone for what is going on. the actor & actress are just doing their job and they did it so well. the veto is in the writer's hand right ? i just wish the best for every each of them. frankly, i'm crying for jynhwan right now but im also happy for taeki but i'm extremely sad instead of exteremely happy. *to all script writer out there: writer-nim pls don't make me fall in love with 1st and 2nd lead character cause it frustrated when one of them are losing. just put a boundary between the 1st and 2nd lead so that i won't be hurt, frustrated or crying all day long thinking bout the other side who will confirmly heartbroken. as for answer me 1988, i know this drama is going this way bcs u want to keep the mysterious husband part however i think this is a bit too much. since this is dramaland and the plot can always be twisted so im hoping a miracle for JH here, hehe. But i'm still rooting for taek :) just don't make my little puppy JH alone in this drama. pls writer-nim

omg I love both Jung-hwan and Taek equally much, which is why I never felt more nervous then when it was slowly revealed throughout this episode that Taek might be the husband instead of Jung-hwan. But thinking back about it now, it makes more sense that Taek is the one for Deok-sun.

He was the one who made the move and confessed his feelings in front of his friends, not JH. It makes sense that Deok-sun wouldn't go after JH as she never knew and might never have known that he likes/d her.

JH was the male lead - we were shown how he cared for his friends and family on many many occasions. It just happens that this is the atypical case where the second lead may get the girl, which is even what viewers ask for in so many other dramas, so it's really rather frustrating that people are blinded by that and are being mean that JH didn't get together with DS.

I'm actually really happy with the message this seems to be sending - someone who dares to pursue what he wants will have a higher chance of getting it, and one who hesitates can only have himself to blame. JH even recognises that, and gave his blessings to Taek, and I think this graciousness is very rare in dramaland (maybe even in reality) and it just goes to show how the friendship is really the focus of this show.

All that aside, I really loved the scene at the restaurant when DS was reading the plaque, and also the scene when DR found out about Bora-SW HAHAHA that poor boy. I will miss this drama so much :'( thank you girlfriday for recapping!

In the other Reply series the one who is constant in his love for the leading lady despite always bickering with her and even sacrificing his love becomes the husband. So in this series if it follows the same pattern it should be JH and not CT! If DS marries CT she wl have to look after him while with JH, he wl look after her. It's disappointing that we were led to believe it would be JH all this time and then suddenly it changes to CT. The writers need to show more justification why it turned out to be CT instead. Is it because PBG is more popular than RJY? If it is, then that's really lame. They should keep true to their characterisation and the Reply series.

I don't know how many times in kdramas where a couple breaks up then gets together without addressing the problem that got them breaking up in the first place. SW shows that he's so much more mature than Bora when he sits down and tells her the conditions in which he'll get together with her again. They talk about it calmly, no yelling, just two adults addressing their relationship's problem. How refreshing!

Wow. Seeing the little montage of Jung Hwan in episode 18 and it's tittle "goodbye first love" I came into this episode hoping (albeit a teeny tiny one) that there would be one final twist that would point to Jung Hwan as the husband, I mean we all want our pick to get the girl right, but sadly(for me) there wasn't one and I'm now 99% sure that Taek's the one. And there's nothing wrong with that; good on Taek for going after what he wants while also considering his friendship with Jung Hwan: he'll get the girl and keep his friend. I guess it's just bitter sweet for me since I could relate so much to Jung Hwan and his quite "under the bridge" ways. It's a harsh reality(even though it's a drama, but come on(!) it's a pretty realistic one) that you won't have a chance if you never admit your feelings. You are your own worst enemy in that case.

Ps. I wasn't an avid follower of Reply 1994, but is this what u guys went through with Chilbongie?? ****oh the heartbreak???****

To answer your question at the end, YES. This is how everyone on #TeamChilbong felt when our ship sank. I never want to experience that feeling ever again. Constantly asking "WTF just happened?" and just "WHY?!" I actually lost sleep over it. The struggle was way too real. Maybe even worse because our boy did EVERYTHING he could to get the girl. He even snuck in some kisses but alas, it was not meant to be and all of us sank with him.

Not saying that JH didn't do anything romantic but as a lot of people have already pointed out, he didn't let DS know about his feelings so it was hard to root for him. None the less, here's to all the broken hearts out there. For those of us who were Chilbonged and to those who are now JungHwaned.*raises wine glass*

And here's to all of us on #TeamTaek! Our boy finally got the girl! How rewarding is this feeling?! *SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEL* PBG is life!

Both of them (Taek and Daek sun) always look for each other though. Have people forgotten the scene of the trench coat flasher? Or when Taek handed her his coat because she was cold why Jungha kept hesitating. Not to forget him being attentive to the fact that she was injured and offered to piggyback her! Jungha refused to do this eventhough Daeksun was faking it but still... We can boldly say that Jungha wasn't honest with his feeling and acted a bit cold towards the girl. Who wants such man?
What has Jungha really done for her that's immeasurable to what Taek did? Is it by running over to her when she called him? Or by waiting outside her study room, of which he played it lightly at the end. Hence, Jungha's fans should tell me what exactly has Jungha done for Daeksun that's better than what Taek's?
That said, Taek is the ideal man for every woman. He and Daeksun also has a great friendship which enable them to be able to stand and care for each other without feeling awkward and I guess Daeksun fell for him without knowing it. Let's not also forget both always have great time together e.g the beach scene, at the end of the football match, the Trench coat flasher encounter etc.
I felt bad for Jungha though but next time, he would be honest with his feelings and not act cold towards the girl he likes eventhough there was a reason!

Here I was, bracing myself for a heartbreak all this time because I was on TeamTaekie. Even with the heavy hint dropping in episode 18, I was pretty sure I was gonna go on the path I did with TeamChilbongie in Series '94.

However... O.M.G. Taek! Sixpence None the Richer's Kiss Me keeps replaying in my head bec. of you!!! I did not expect him to be the husband at all. But even though Taek won DS in the end, JH... he's the sweetest and most thoughtful moron in the world. I'm hoping he meets his match in the next episode so bad, it's overtaking my original ship.

Despite my happiness at the romance bit finally getting settled, I am a bit sad - okay, REALLY sad - that this series is coming to an end. I have grown to love the characters beyond romance dimension; the community has strongly endeared itself to me. This series was more of a love story between mothers and sons, fathers and daughters (and vice versa), friend and friend than it was between just a girl and a boy.

I will miss the friendship, camaraderie and thoughtfulness that this series has put forward, which was truly warm to watch in this seemingly cold era.

I look forward to future series in this franchise, if there would be any (an Answer Me Sageuk version, anyone?). *sighs* I will surely miss waiting for this every weekend. (ಥ_ಥ)

Full disclosure - im a JH - DS shipper, however-

It seems to be a very odd type of a narrative that the director and writer have gone with:

Here's JH, he's a peach, he loves his family, will go the extra length for his mom and dad and will do whatever his brother wants just because Hyung cant do it himself. He is also in love with his childhood friend and he looks out for her in so many secret ways. Till one day he finds out his best friend likes the girl too and he backs away in the only way he knows how (is gruff, mean etc). He loves the girl, he loves the friend, the heartache is killing him.

AND......

he doesnt get the girl.

See right there, i feel like some rules of story telling have been broken. it seems odd that we spend so much time with a character to not see them to happy ending (unless i missed the brief where it was supposed be some kafka-eque narrative where everyone is unhappy and then they die).

Sure it happens in real life, but as a story telling arc, it just doesnt make sense (and i swear im trying to rationally analyse this)

It makes perfect sense. JW didn't just back off because of Taek. He was always too slow. He had amble opportunities to do something and he didn't. Blaming it all on Taek is ignoring the fact that he loved DS since the first episode.

His mean personality WAS a problem for a girl like Deok-Sun. He was also always like that, not just after he decided to ignore her. DS really had no reason to like the guy if you actually look at it from her POV and not his.

The show told us more than once you have to be bold and courageous in the face of love, and JH was not. That's why he never gained any ground with DS.

i agree, i really don't think it makes sense as well.

the thing is, i've never been able to see DS x taek romantic chemistry ONSCREEN (off screen they have tons tho!) tbh, they've always just given me bff vibes. and when DS' moments of awareness came for taek, it was so random and came off as pushed. i blame the writer for this. she dragged out the narration (husband hunting part of it anyway) for so long that DS' awareness of taek seemed patched on--an after thought. not believable. her awarenes should've came episodes ago!

plus i just want to say the time jump was useless (for the main couple). like, what was it for? EVERYTHING JUST FELT SO FORCED, I CAN'T. it all happened too fast. for a show that is about family and should've given everyone in the neighborhood their just dues, saving 2 measly eps to try and do that is pathetic. SO MANY THINGS FELL APART BECAUSE OF THAT DAMN HUSBAND HUNTING THEME, UGH. next time, if this writer wants to stick with this theme, she better do way better. there is a time when you just have to stop and she crossed that line soooooo many episodes ago lol. this is why DS x taek couple ("main couple") i (and i'm sure others) found to be so weak. we never got to spend enough time with them together as a couple. we didn't see them struggle with and love one another. this is why the second pairing (bora x sunwoo) is much stronger than the main couple. we atleast came to know and care for them.

we were able to walk with them on a journey of sweet innoccent love and then have to watch them mature and leave one another. this writer needs to understand that it's NOT about the husband hunting, it's about connection with the audience. it's about who's able to tugg at the heartstrings of the audience AND this comes with the amount of time we are able to see and get to know a character/couple. seriously, just do better next time, ugh.

I'm giving this episode 5 stars because TAEK got the girl!! Woohoooo FINALLY!!! *I can dance all night*

I like Jung-hwan, I think he's a really nice guy. But seriously, everything is fair in love. Taek fought for his love and he won. No hard feelings.

Just like how Jung-hwan graciously accepted this, I hope all the fans will accept this graciously too :)

So Jung hwan was Chilbongie all this time? WTH! This show is unpredictable as hell. I can almost hear writer nim shouting "taek that viewers * evil laugh* "
All this time DS's mom said that she wanted Taek as his son-in-law.
I like taek but i like JH too. I feel like Bella confused to choose between Edward and Jacob LOL!!!

Taek is the most perfect Kdrama male figure I can ever dream of. and I loved every line he said, every moment he breathed in the drama. Thank you WJ! Superb job on the character development. Well done WJ! I love your works! Hope she comes back with another great story and characters!

i imagined worst scenarios and never dared to think that taekie gets the love of his life...though i wished for it with all my heart. I was totally swwoooning and grinning from ear to ear while watching the ep and reading the recap...DS and CT are so adorable together....jst watched ep 20. im so thankful to the writers....this was a great drama...haters or likers u hooked both of us till the end. and i also liked jung hwan very much..he doesnt nee to get the girl for him to shine, each of the character rocked at their own worth...JH has moved on so i hope his fans tooo..he can do without DS but taekie cant..he needed her so much so that he wont have to take pills for sleep..so that he wont miss his mom so much, so that he wont cry alone, so that there will be somebody for him to lean on...somebody who shares his memories, some body who will understand changing shades of his face. no other girl could take her place...because they were always together...i miss all 5 frnds..hope this series will be a mile stone in their careers

So after my emotional breakdown last week and preparing myself for the writer's betrayal, I'm okay now. Still very sad about Jung Hwan, but even I can't deny that both men were a good match for her and the ending with Taek is indeed sweet.
That said, I haven't watched any episodes since episode 16 and will let the show end at 16. I can only forgive so much, haha.

Reading this recap is satisfying enough because even though he didn't get the conventional happy ending, Jung Hwan is such a great character. I know we were all fawning over how great Deok-Sun was as both a daughter and friend, but I think Jung Hwan was exceptionally the best son and friend and the real shinning star outside of the whole husband search. He may not have gotten Deok-Sun, but his relationship with his mom beats the possible romantic relationship that could have been. I just love him so much. I hope my husband will be as considerate and loving as him and if not I'd like to have a son like Jung Hwan. Jung Hwan is the real star of R88'!

This is my first time watching the reply series. I didn't really connect with the first one and was turned off by the fanfare people made about 97' so I didn't watch 94. I'm really glad I watched 88' though. In essence it gave me the kind of loving family I've always wanted, especially in the Kim household. I don't think/probably won't watch the next one but I really enjoyed being apart of the Reply obsession!

The lesson I've taken away from this show is take courage, don't hesitate, there's a time for everything, and also that you don't and won't always win!

I have to give it to the writer for perfectly executing these lessons even if it was heart breaking, haha!

i'm on your same boat. i stopped watching at ep. 16 too and said my goodbyes lol. BUT i might watch jungpal's ep. 18
(saying godbye to my first love) because well, i adore and care for him so much. BUT i don't know if i can handle the heartache so maybe i'll give it a month or so before i watch it haha.

and you are so right. jungpal's character was the shining star of the show. sure, he's a bit gruff and let things slip away (SO DAMN FRUSTRATING!) but why does that matter when so many pros outweigh the cons? he was an amazing brother, son, friend and i'm sure husband to that lucky bastard of a female he'll end up with lol. he was SO dang perceptive too, gawd. it took this boy seconds to realize when he'd said something and done something wrong and if someone felt uncomfortable. and then, bless his heart, he'll go out of his way to make it right. bless his beautiful heart and soul.

he was such a beautifully written and tragic first lead. all the relationships he had just outshined everyone elses, seriously.

*bromance award definitely went to him and jung bong

*son of the year award went to him (sunwoo is a close second but for me, jungpal takes it because his dynamic with his parents are so much more realistic and relatable than sunwoo's with his mom's.)

*greatest friend ALSO went to jungpal (he prioritized all his friends above himself, come on. he bowed out right when he realized taek liked DS, if he had just pursued DS, their love would've blossomed and grew stronger as they aged and that'd be it, they'd be endgame. and remember how he followed DR when those bullies took him away? he was so scared but followed anyway cuz he was a good friend. plus that punch he gave to the guy that was shit talking sunwoo's dad? SWOONS. such a great dan friend :(

*best family award also goes to jungpal's family (sunwoo x taek's family is a close second too, i just came to love jungpal's quirky and weird af family more lol)

AND last but not least, IF jungpal had had a sister, i bet he would've given sunwoo a run for his money for the best big bro award too, TEEHEE. <3

Ahh, finally caught up to the end of this episode. It's been an emotional evening.

Good for Sun Woo, for negotiating for his own terms too. :)

Points to Taek too, that he had the sensitivity and loyalty to visit JH to speak to him about DS. It would have been easy to just pretend it was all so long ago and not to care. And it says a lot about their relationship that JH pretended it was fine, and Taek knew it'd cost him.

Mi Ok looks pretty!

And of course- that kiss! It was great Taek just went for it, the moment he saw the smallest opening. Hurray, Taek.
I think the writer did a good job of building their relationship, slowly, bit by bit - as friends - with the light, playful childishness, and then as mutual caretakers. It also felt natural that DS did have a glimpse into Taek's world outside - so her visiting his match in a foreign country was just a continuation and it seemed natural it would tip into this territory sooner or later.

And it was great we're shown what the next stages of life also look like from the older generation - changes in identity due to work or physical health. It was also nice to have a little reminder of how sweet Doek Sun is - she's such a natural carer. The little supportive gestures for her mother were so nice.

Hallelujah! I sorta figured it out a while back it was Task since he's a smoker but this episode was the ice cream in the ice cream cake. Lovely!

The kiss scenes are so boiling hot. I was squirming every romantic moment. This show made me wear a dumb smile in the aftermath. Can't wait for the finale.

Park Bo Gum deserves an award for this show.

Guys, you've watched a drama that is full of things to learn from. I hope you all will understand what we are going through.

I am a Junghwan fan and i really can relate to those who are seriously heartbroken right now. When you're this heartbroken, you tend to do things that are not really you.. or the other way around.. you tend to do things that are so you... for me no matter how much i love Taek i can't seem to accept the fact that he's the husband. Because of this, i want to say bad things about his character.. because i am THIS heartbroken. And now people who have been cheering for Taek will just say that Junghwan fans are rude for saying bad things about Taek. Well, can't you just understand what we are going through. It may be easy for you because your guy got the girl. But what about us, whenever we think of Reply 1988.. we'll be forever heartbroken.

If Junghwan was the husband, maybe i will also feel bad if people will be saying bad things about him. But i will let them do that, it's what they can only do. Like now, that's what most Junghwan fans can do.. to say mean things to compensate the heartache that we are feeling right now.

Taekie-Deoksun shippers.. just let us be like this. I don't know when i can get over this. I really don't know.

lol, tell me about that SALT. as a fellow jungpal stan, i feel hurt but conflicted. i love love loveeeeeee PBG (not so much taek tho, his character never really did it for me tbh) and am a hardcore jungpal fan. so i am both happyish and very sad. (more sad tho, if i am being completely honest.)

i'll probs wait a month to watch jungpal's heartbreaking ep. 18 hopefully by then i would've recovered and there'll be less pain.

but keep your head up! it's just a drama after all :) just know that many others feel your pain too. so as #teamjungpal lets just all support one another. STARY STRONG!

Honestly pretty heartbroken and irritated by the trolling done by the writers. I think I would have felt so much better if they didn't set up so many scenes from Jung Hwan's point of view and his unrequited love... and NOT EVEN GIVE US AN ACTUAL CONFESSION from it. That really annoys me, I definitely feel played by the writers.

I'm okay with Taek being with Deok Sun, I just wish that I could have at least heard a genuine Jung Hwan confession and even a rejection from Deok Sun to give this closure... especially since it feels like the writers have been stringing us along with all these scenes of Jung Hwan's POV with Deok Sun. It feels very deliberately misleading to me.

I genuinely wish I was on the Taek-Deok Sun ship since the beginning because I'm hating how this drama makes me feel. I can't help but admit that it's a bit ruined for me now. I feel like even if I rewatched this drama from the beginning even with the mindset of Taek-Deok Sun being the outcome, it would just really hurt and I'll feel pretty manipulated by the early Jung-Hwan scenes with him enamored with Deok Sun. If they don't give Jung Hwan a Happily Ever After for episode twenty, I'm going to chuck something at the screen. I really don't know if I'm going to sit through another answer me/reply me series unless there's ZERO romantic plotline. I refuse to be played again by the writer.

either 1: last min script change by writer over to team taek cuz basically EVERYONE thought jungpal x DS would be end game. (so basically it was done to make the series less predictable)

or 2 (i KIND OF have hope in this writer so i am leaning more toward this one): jungpal WAS written as first lead with the plan that he won't get the girl. THIS is why so much was written in his POV and the audience came to care for him so much.

end of the day, jungpal IS first lead. he has all the makings for a kdrama male lead. it's just one of those rare instances that the second lead got the girl instead. if i do say so though, this has been the worst case of main lead NOT getting the girl to date. i can't think of another as tragic. it still hurts me so much lol.

Team Jungpal! #justiceforjungpal ;(
He is really more the lead of this rather than DS. As the episodes go, we get to know him more and more. Every episode has something touching about him. That's why it's hard to move on because he's just the sweetest guy! Personally, I love those hard on the outside, softie on the inside characters that's why I adore him so. We saw how selfless he is and it's better than other boy-next-door characters because usually he doesn't need any praises or recognition to do a good job. Most of the time he's just happy seeing his loved ones be happy because of what he did. That's how confident he is that he doesn't need any pat on the back to do the sweetest things. We saw how considerate he is with his father, mother, Jung bong and most especially Taek. Of course, just like any other human out there, he has his flaws and that is hesitating to be more aggressive in getting his love. However, we saw in the end that even that weakness, he recognizes. It's just too bad that the writers didn't give us a happy ending for Jungpal. Of all the people in the neighborhood, he deserves it the most for all the sacrifices he made for the others. Where is his good karma?! Justice for Jungpal!

TEAM JUNGPAL TILL I DIE. (when i say this i'm not saying taem jungpal x DS for endgame, i'm just saying team jungpal, team jungpal's happiness, team jungpal in a uniform, team jungpal smiling, team jungpal grows up, team jungpal as the best bro in the word, team jungpal as the best son, team weirdo & awkward jungpal and team jungpal as the best husband for that one lucky girl in the future till i die.)

If some people are behaving like loonies, just give them a break, scroll through and allow them to grieve. After all, we've all been there before right? heartbroken and going crazy thinking about what might have been...

I'm sure the people behind the R88 expected this much too. It simply means they did well and made people care.

Junghwan ah, missing you much! (Ha! forgive my fangirl heart)

Jung Hwan only has to blame himself, by not making any move even when Deok Sun was so on to the relationship. Any girl of her age will move on when there is no response from the guy. The fact that she was not affected much by Jung Hwan's unresponsive attitude shows Jung Hwan doesn't mean anything more to her than just a childhood friend. Even if Jung Hwan admit to Deok Sun during that time, there will be a possibility they will break up at a later stage because the person Deok Sun likes is Taek, that will even be worst for Jung Hwan shippers.

Deok Sun told a lie about 1989 kiss shows that she is worried that if Taek said it means nothing to him, she will be disappointed and feel awkward when they meet again. She has no confidence that Taek likes her too, she must have felt she didn't know Taek well enough after Taek told her he likes someone and Deok Sun don't really know him in an earlier episode. That is why Deok Sun kept it to herself about the kiss.

Those who preferred Chilbong in R94 should be happy that Taek was the husband because that was Chilbong's wish and it came true ^_^.

You have know idea of how much I get frustated with this drama for the last week up until now, even I can't concentrated on my work at the office, been refused to watch ep 18 because that will caused me a lot of pain...

And this episode solely make me woke up in the middle of the night just doing nothing........ stare at the ceiling of my bedroom and sighed over and over again. while in the morning I just walking around my house back and forward, confused ....

I'm team Jung Hwan and yes ............... my heart bleeding for him, and still is ..... guess I refused to watch next reply installment with wholeheartedly to avoid being in this condition once again.

But, then watching this ship wars ... how intense its become ... if there is to blame, I would blame me... yeah me for using all my head and my heart to be fooled by Writer Nim while I obviously know this is a DRAMA ... DRAMAaaaaaa .... One hell of a great DRAMA ..

I love Jung Hwan ... how they portray his character ... even taek ship member will agree with me, there is no way you don't fall for him... but I realized, as he spoke before it was himself to blame for not get the girl. Why I love him so much, maybe because that an ideal man I pictured in my mind, not physically but inside his heart that matter.

Sigheeeddd....... its hard and hurt

But i do understand why at the end DS choose taek who seem to be near her ( well, in her sight ). Being married for 13 years, my husband is definitely not my teens or my early 20's ideal man, his faaaaarrrr from it ...;-p
and if you said, why DS so clueless about JH affection toward her .. that's because he never even said it, I was once in my teenage and early 20's like DS. I never know or sure about boys feeling toward me until they said it. When my friend ask me ( she happens to be my junior high school friend's sister in law ), how come I don't know that his brother in law had crush on me back then ?? I said, how do I know if he didn't tell, I'm not a psychic that seem know everything even no one tell him/her.

We know about JH feeling clearly because we saw it, we feel it, we're the viewer ... but not her, if she had even a slightly feel that he had a crush on her but waiting so long to hear the confession, I guessed we can not blame her for turn her head to other direction. Girls need statement .... well, at least for me...

I choose my husband out of everybody else, mostly, because I feel the most comfortable feeling with him. He, in his silent way, won me .... for being accompanied me whenever I need him, in bad and good time, he always around me, he doesn't need to speak anything, but having him beside me already ease my pain. and its taek who always near DS in her good and bad time, so no wonder she chooses him. JH sadly keep his feeling just for him ( and us ) and decide not to fight for it ( if he decide to fight for it, we'll have another 6 episodes ...although I won't complain if that really...

I have to say, I'm going to miss this drama so so much. I might find something else that gives me crazy feels this year but this will always have a special place with me.

Romance-wise, I loved both of the boys for Deok-sun. At the same we do see how some fans who were particular to Junghwan might be upset, Taek only seriously became a love-interest variable after we enjoyed some adorably sweet scenes with Junghwan. But I kind of love this show for that. It really gave me a ride, in the best ways possible.

And I'm happy our girl Deok-sun matured and got to find love that was more than a given interest in someone because they seemed interested in her. I was always concerned about the lovelines with the other boys because of that. It was a sincere and I think, realistic move for her to take a step back when her friendship with Taek was at risk and that's probably why I'm okay with Taek now. As long as she had the time to really delve into what she felt for a person, I'd be okay with whomever she chose.

And so I watched episode 20 raw because I couldn't wait :p

I realised this drama was more than about who she ends up with. You know the Reply series has always been more about the nostalgia and it doesn't matter about the characters' future, we've seen them growing up and we know either way, they will be happy. I am so proud of everyone. This was just about experiencing the lives of wonderful friends and family and that is why I'll miss this drama and all the beloved characters so much.
