Kim Hee-ae courted for remake of Second to Last Love
by | March 23, 2016 | 33 Comments

She might have passed on Mrs. Cop 2, but Kim Hee-ae (Mrs. Cop, Secret Love Affair) may be headlining a weekend drama for SBS after all. She’s considering the new series Second to Last Love, a remake of a Japanese drama of the same name (Saigo Kara Nibanme no Koi), an adult romance about a fortysomething woman finding love.

The original series had two seasons on Fuji Television in 2012-2014, and is about a 45-year-old single woman who works as a television producer. She has no interest in romance and just concerns herself with preparing for retirement, but when she moves to a new town, she meets a 50-year-old man who’s widowed and has one child, and a romance begins.

There are even some elements familiar to Korean weekend dramas in the original, like disapproving family members and the like. As far as premise goes, it really sounds like a very common single parent dramaland romance (One More Happy Ending and Marriage Contract are two examples in opposite genres, just in the last few months). The only major difference is the ages of the leads.

It sounds like a contemplative drama about middle age and singledom, and Kim Hee-ae is perfect casting for a project like this — it’s almost like casting her tells me more about what this drama intends to be than any plot description could. It’ll be directed by PD Choi Young-hoon of Warm Words and High Society, and written by Choi Yoon-jung of Mr. Back and Emergency Couple. The writer doesn’t instill a lot of confidence, but it is a remake, so hopefully there’s a good reason they’re adapting this story.

Second to Last Love is being considered for the Saturday-Sunday slot following Beauty and the Beast (after Mrs. Cop 2) in July.

I enjoyed her in SLA. Hope they can cast an ahjussi of equal talent for her.

I liked her wardrobe in SLA, hope they continue that trend.

I love the original japanese drama.. both season..
I hope the remake is equally good.

  3. Lea

The JDRAMA was adorable so I hope this is as well.
Hopefully they find a good Ahjusshi opposite her 🙂

Tbh, i rather watch her in a new Ahn Pan Suk drama that headlining this. i still feel bitter because she passed HITTG for Mrs. Cop

I’m so with you here. Ahn Pan Suk is a must follow. What is he doing taking a break when we need him lol.
      Give us another Grapevine please!

      • 4.1.1 pogo

Grapevine is one of the greatest dramas of the last decade, hands down.

It wasn’t feelgood, but it’s a perfect example of a story refusing to give us what we want while giving us what we actually need. SO GOOD.

I need a new drama to obsess over ASAP. His shows are the best.

the tone of Emergency Couple’s writing was confusing and I didn’t watch Mr. Back for me to have a positive opinion on the writer but I’m willing to check it out for Kim Hee Ae. she always has this elegant aura.

I watched mr. Back , the cast r good but the story line was totally disaster! I’m worried that they gonna destroy my beloved Kim hee ae bcs of their story.

  6. genkibaka

lol I cant imagine Saigo kara being remake into a Kdrama. But l’m looking forward to korean Nakai Kiichi. Wonder who it could be ???? haha

  7. Tia

Hopefully this Korean remake will maintain an LGBT element in the drama involving one of the male lead’s sisters. I’d hate to see that get cast away.

Find a good ahjussi for her! I suggest Cho Jae Hyun ahjussi

    • 8.1 Kiara

      Jo Jae Hyun
      Choi Min Soo
Han Suk Gyu (good luck bringing him to dramaland :(.
      Yoon Je Moon
      Jo Jin Woong
      Ryu Seung-Ryong (missing Ryuuuu)
      Kim Myung Min

      • 8.1.1 Kiara

How can I forget Son Chang-Min. They’ve starred in a movie together before.

      • 8.1.2 dmohican14

Kim Myung Min! I doubt this could happen, but I’d love to watch him bicker with Kim Hee Ae and be hounded by his crazy family.

    • 8.2 NamNavi

I like Jo Jae Hyun ahjussi too but I want Cha Seung Won.
He’s kinda young to play 50years old ahjussi tho…

  9. fuzzy

Have no idea what the male char is like. But I’d love to see Jo Jin-woong being adorable.

      Jo jin wooonnggg yes!!!

Hmm, Second to Last Love was much more slice-of-life/comedy than romance, so it

    • 10.1 sipo

yup yup..the romance was not brought up like in the usual romance drama.

in the end, the union of the OTP was not being a lover at all, they were just being a really a good friend of each other…because after all it’s the true form of love, right? being a good friend?

Argh, Dramabeans doesn’t work well with my phone. Anyway, I think it will be interesting to see how this translates to a k-drama as the romance is very subtle. Kim Hee Ae kind of has the same aura as Koizumi Kyoko though, so I think she’ll be good in this role.

I’m interested if she’s in it, but I’m not well versed on my ahjussis so I don’t know who’d be a good match opposite her.

Choi Yoon-jung of Mr. Back and Emergency Couple

    Oh god.

  13. 13 franbergh

if they cast choi min soo, this would be epic.
i love him in pride n prejudice, besides i dont remember any actor over 50s in kdrama land 😀
kim hee ae, now I really want to see her in saeguk as a powerful brilliant woman. either its a queen or some underground army leader.

  14. 14 Bugs_bunny

hope this drama delivers… luv her in a wife’s credentials:)

It really annoys me when they remake japanese dramas. Why can’t they leave the originals alone, and to think that people aren’t aware of the original, it just pisses me off.

I don’t get Kim Hee Ae’s appeal, she’s not beautiful and she’s not that good an actress either.

    • 15.1 CHUBBYCotton

kim hee ae is Veteran Actress thats why YG wants her to sign in Yg ent. but I think youre just a hater.

  16. 16 Jenny

The jdorama was hilarious! I loved all the characters from the original.
I’m just not sure about making it into a kdrama, knowing how much is usually added just to create silly drama.
Also the music in the jdorama was so catchy (not Ayu’s song though)

    • 16.1 Waiting

She would be perfect for this. I watch two episodes of the first season today and I can totally see her playing this role.

Off to marathon it this week!

  17. 17 manam

I loved, loved, LOVED this Japanese drama.

It is so thoughtful and poignant and unflashy and funny that I still think about it months after having watched it. There was no “DRAMA,” just these really gorgeous moments between real human beings. The heroine is one of my favorite drama characters.

  18. 18 Sera

OTT, who are the casts for Beauty and the Beast? I sincerely want sbs weekend drama to pick up on ratings. I still feel bad for I Have A Lover got the very low rating.

I am not a fan of Kim Hee Ae but hopefully this drama delivers. We need a good and sexy ajhjusshi beside her.

  19. 19 Sancheezy

    I watched the J-Drama and it’s cute,
it’s all about both of the character and their family interaction,
    it’s heartwarming type of drama,

this is one of the time I hope Kdrama doesn’t try to make unnecessarily conflict

  20. 20 pattsue

The original jdorama,Saigo Kara is not a romance drama, its about a friendship between two friends..their interaction, their families and their bantering. They( Chiaki and Wahei) remain friend till the end of season2…
