Rekindled sparks for Kim Hyun-joo and Joo Sang-wook in JTBC’s Fantastic

I feel like we didn’t hear anything about JTBC’s upcoming Fantastic for a while, but just in the last week came a flurry of confirmations and then boom — already a (brief!) teaser. Girlfriday was right on the money: Kim Hyun-joo (I Have a Lover) will star as a hit drama writer with a terminal illness, while Joo Sang-wook (Glamorous Temptation) is a mega Hallyu star known for his “foot-acting,” meaning he’s terrible onscreen, but people love him anyway.

Kim is Lee So-hye, nicknamed God So-hye for her addictive writing and wildly popular shows. She’s very straightforward and called one “tough unnie,” but her sole weakness is her family. When she discovers she only has five more months to live, instead of wasting time with tears, she’ll resolve to make the most of her remaining days and to go out with a bang.

Joo is Ryu Hae-sung, described as a Foot-Caprio (HAHA), and writer Lee is not only his first love (who ended up breaking his heart), she was actually responsible for Ryu’s big break ten years ago. They’ll reunite after a decade and in the limited amount of time they have left, they’ll enjoy a fleeting, passionate romance.

The teaser is brief, but it highlights characters in JTBC’s most popular shows saying the word “today” and concludes with Kim and Joo summing up the plot: “A romance that only lives today.” I’m looking forward to seeing how Kim adds lightness to her role, and have enjoyed Joo in rom-coms and am tickled he’ll play a top star who really can’t act. The show promises that it won’t wallow in sorrow, but will focus on how “fantastic” life really is.

Park Shi-yeon (Greatest Marriage), Kim Tae-hoon (One More Happy Ending) and resident cutie Ji-soo (Doctors) are also confirmed for the rom-com. Fantastic will be directed by Jo Nam-gook (Last, The Chaser), written by Lee Sung-eun (Sad Love Song, Vampire Idol) and will premiere September 2 on JTBC.

The trailer is so half-hearted though, like you just slapped together a montage and yeah, we gots a trailer, it's a wrap! I wouldn't even mind if it was only 2 seconds long of snark but this reeks laziness.

On a side note, I complain because there is no Taehoon, not even a whiff of him in the trailer, how rude

Oh yes! I'd love some Tae Hoon (with a liberal sprinkling of hidden vulnerabilities...)?

Can someone please write his story in OMHE as a separate drama already?!!

Isn't a teaser and a trailer different? I believe it's a teaser, which normally just gives a greeting vibe. No worries, I guess they will release the trailer sometime soon.

Yeah, it's a teaser- but usually teasers aren't even that long (I think Moonlight's actual trailer was only about 20 seconds or so). Like I said they could've just left out the montage because it just looks like lazy editing to me :<

I think "foot acting" means bad acting in SK so Foot-caprio means he's a foot acting version of Leo? (Just my guess!)

So, is " terminal illness " the new trend now ?

anyway, I'm IN .. I love melos, and I love the cast <3 ..
and the writer WOW! I actually never bothered to look up the author of vampire idol but that drama was HILARIOUS !! hahahaha .. and sad love song was one of my first K-drama .. it even aired dubbed in my country ..
the thing is, if a writer can make such polar-opposite dramas and still make them soooo good, then She'is a brilliant one ...
I'm so looking forward to this !! yay !

She's going to have fleeting-passionate romance with him then break his heart again after her time is up? So, he's the willing victim? Interesting... *pack bag to fly to SK and lure him to my lair*

Ummmm maybe. I don't see how this doesn't end up full on melo, but I like the overall concept of 2nd chance of love but, why always with the terminal illness.

And Ji Soo...he's gotta be one of the hardest working men in k-drama right now. Not complaining.

I know, right? He's literally in every big show this year. I don't know how he's doing so much (but I'm okay because more Jisoo is never a bad thing ?).

I went and counted his tag because of this thread and my own curiosity. He's been confirmed in no less than 8 projects since March 2015 (Angry Mom) - 16 months. Plus his debut in a movie at some point before that. Most actors are mentioned and then say no. But he has literally been in everything.

No complaints Jisoo puppa. Keep it coming and have fun!

Terminal ilness? sigh, isn't this kind of concept so outdated right now? we have 99999 dramas and movies about this...

The premise sounds fun!! I'm obviously tuning in for Jisoo, but the rest of the cast are good as well.

Jisoo's agency Prain TPC posted an update about his role and he's gonna be a lawyer!! Our resident puppy all grown up and donning suits!! ??? Also, broadcast date is 9/2, just 4 days after Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart: Ryeo airs!! ?????? Not to mention, My Ear's Candy (reality show) with Jisoo, Jang Keun Suk, Kyung Soo Jin is airing 8/18. ✌?️✌?✌? So much Jisoo goodness at the same time!! I can't wait!! ???

It's on tvN and the concept is pretty interesting. Got the following from an article:

The new show, created by the producer of hit drama 'Reply 1988', consists of a unique formate in which stars talk on the phone with an anonymous friend nicknamed Candy to share their concerns, worries, and more.

Yoo Hak Chan PD further explained, "Just like the secret friend who was always there to listen to the loner in the movie 'Her', I became curious about the things we can share with that kind of friend in reality. I think stars have a lot of inner thoughts they would want to share that contrast to their fancy looks."

He continued, "It is actually harder to have a sincere conversation with close friends and family. During the recording, they were amazed at how they were able to connect with an anonymous friend."

I really love the casting as well. I've been waiting for Kim Hyun Joo to do a rom-com! Can't wait to see her and Joo Sang Wook together. I've also been missing Park Shi Yeon. I just hope her role is more dynamic than the typical second lead.

Kim Hyun Joo looks younger with shorter hair. ? I don't mind with terminal illness just don't shoe she die at end. Even it is incurable, but just end like Marriage Contract.

This drama will start with rom com, but it will turn to melo once she starts become worse. Both Kim Hyun Joo and Joo Sang Wook are solid in romcom and melo so I don't see they will have a problem.

I hope we don't have any bitch second female lead. Why cannot Kim Hyun Joo and Park Shi Yeon be best friend and give one man for PSY. PSY is actually deserves better than bitchy type second lead.

*squeals* I love all five of the cast! I'm quite iffy about the terminal illness part but let's hope it won't break our hearts like we're expecting it to. The actors are an A in my book so I'm wishing the writing delivers, as well.

Apart from the terminal illness, the plot really sounds like the one from the movie Like for Likes. Yoo Ah In was adorable as a young rookie with a crush on the star writer-nim.
