Drama viewership ratings for the week of April 22-28, 2024

Well, they did it! The Queen of Tears finale has gone and smashed those tvN records making it their highest rated drama. Ever.

While nothing else can really compare to 24.8% cable ratings, Hide finished its run on an even keel, and it’s likely that Chief Detective 1958 will grow its double digits next week with Queen of Tears out of the way.

What a crowning achievement for tvN and the QoT team after that year-long slump of no weekend dramas hitting double digits. Won’t see them breaking that record anytime soon but I’d love to be surprised.

Congrats to the production team and all the cast members of QoT! QoT is also now the third highest-viewed cable K-drama of all time in South Korea, only beaten by the 2020 series The World of the Married (with 28.4 per cent) and Reborn Rich (with 26.9 per cent). Both The World of Married and Reborn Rich are from JTBC.

World of the Married was March-to-May 2020: at the very beginning of complete/total Covid lockdowns. I don't know if any drama will ever see those kind of ratings again.

It is really hard to make it to defeat the World of Married, given the circumstances.

Well done, MBC! You have proven that you are now the public television to look out for, despite the gigantic force of QoT. Definitely love the offerings starting from My Dearest right up to Chief Detective 1958!

This is MBC's 5th hit drama in a row, their comback is honestly impressive considering the fact that everyone had been writing the networks obituary after an entire year of consecutive failures.

Yes, indeed. They are really impressive, going back to their roots with saeguks that touches the hearts and historical relevant to Koreans, casting popular and veteran actors together and hiring talented writers and producers.

Nothing uncovered had a nice jump on Tuesday. That was an insane plot twist 😅
Also, the annoying character disappeared. I wonder how many more twists they have planned for remaining episodes.

QoT probably would have at least challenged Reborn Rich if the writing didnt take a nosedive during the second half, either way 3rd place is nothing to scoff at.

Lovely Runner and Chief detective are so much fun, rooting for both of them!!

QoT definitely earned it rights. But I don't think I'll be favorable towards the writing nosedive it took in the finale week.
What happened between episode 11&12 of Nothing Uncovered? That jump is something else.

I thought this was a well done drama and watched the first four episodes, but I quickly got fatigued with it and can see why it didn't ultimately pull higher numbers. There's a certain point when twists start to feel exhausting rather than exciting and at least for me, this drama hit that point relatively quickly. Glad you loved it all the way through!

I was planning to watch Hide, but got busy with other things. >_<" Kept meaning to try to catch up and now it's already over.

LR's ratings are solid, although I wish they could hit 5%. I think even those adults who might assume this is a teen idol romance and therefore skip it would likely find something to enjoy. It's so entertaining thanks to the leads and the perfectly balanced writing.

I still think QoT deserved its high ratings, even if the final episodes left some things to be desired (like a proper reconciliation kiss). Overall, I was a satisfied viewer through its whole run, and am happy for the production team that it was so successful.

Congrats to all the actors and staff involved in Queen of Tears!

Phenomenonal achievement that exceeded the huge hype. Really looking forward to whatever Kim Ji-won does next, she's finally getting all the attention she deserves.

Hmm ... guess having been a fan of an artist for so very long it seems strange to think about them as being underrated. But I know what you mean.
Looking forward for her next project. 🫰

QUEEN OF TEARS has the same writer as CLOY, so what we saw was a writer smashing her own record. Actually almost all of her shows have been hits.

The presence of QoT has had a depressing effect on our new Weekender, even though that weekender has started out well dramatically- much more tightly written and without the truly obnoxious filler which afflicted the previous two weekenders. Actually, it seems like there are simply too many shows now being crowded onto the weekend.

There are no significant Wednesday-Thursday shows?

I'm sure there was a lot of pressure on the writer to surpass CLOY. So I say mission accomplished. Although the incessant callbacks to CLOY got old - QoT was good enough to stand on its own two feet and didn't really need those. But I am enjoying the QoT references in The Midnight Studio. 😊

Well done QOT. Up until around episodes 7 and 8 I thought QOT would be joining the two flowers: SAND and KNIGHT on my 2024 favorites of the year list but alas the second have sort of put a kibosh to that. Nevertheless for a 24 episode drama squeezed into 16 episodes I will remember it on a positive note.

Lol among the cast my paternal concern is for Park Sung-hoon. He gave a very good performance but please drama gods don’t type cast this guy as a psycho/heavy. I hope in the upcoming film TROPICAL NIGHTS with Woo Do-hwan he doesn’t play too much a heavy as front man for a drug gang.
I much prefer PSH as sweet Gong-myung in the wonderful KBS drama INTO THE RING (2020) (Viki US).

I also hope he will not be typecast. He does play villain well but he has a good acting range. I hope he get non-villain role after Tropical Nights.

I heard an ajhumma wacked Park Sung Hoon for daring to mess with uri Hae-in. Can someone please cast him as a swoony ML who I can fangirl over peaceably. When he's good he's really good unfortunately he feels when he's bad he's too good and gets more love. 🤦‍♀️🙈

congratulations to the Queen of Tears team, they almost made it to the quarter century! That would have been a smash hit even on network tv but on cable....well done.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what Kim Ji-won does next, I've been rooting for her to headline something of this scale since 2013

(and my next choice of dramas to watch might just be a rewatch of Moon/Sun but reimagining it with her as the female lead instead - she would have been the right age for a role like that at the time and certainly better in the role)

Yeah that 0.2% rankles a bit. If episode 15 has done away with the evil gang we could have expected episode 16 to do even more. Still, good job done. 👏👍

Please Lovely runner get to 5% before the end of the run. I am so loving this drama I hope it can maintain the joy it brings.

congratulations to Queen of Tears, making it to almost the quarter century on cable is a hell of a feat!

I'd like to think the ratings would've probably gone higher if episode 14 hadn't devolved fully into repetitive makjang territory by the end, despite that turn being probably an intentional homage to 00s kdramas and their pile-of-disasters. It's a shame because up to episode 10 and I'd argue even 12, the drama had a certain momentum that the amnesia/villainy plot just drained, it's a good thing I don't watch for the plot anyway because Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won kept me hooked to the very end.

Many congratulations to the Queen of Tears cast and crew. Thank you for the joy. ♥️ The good parts were excellent and the not to good were *sigh* eminently forgettable. Nonetheless, it was fun.

Hope now Chief Detective 1958 and Missing Crown Prince can both expect some good number. Much depends on The Atypical Family premiering this weekend.

The Midnight Studio and Carry Sun-Jae and Run - I love you both and hwaiting!!
