Yoo Yeon-seok joins Mr. Sunshine as tragic second lead

Good news: Yoo Yeon-seok (Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim) is coming back in a new drama, and it’s hit writer Kim Eun-sook’s upcoming blockbuster period drama Mr. Sunshine. Bad news: He’s been cast to play a tragic character who falls in love with the heroine. Nooooooooo. How could anyone cast Yoo Yeon-seok as a second lead after what we all went through with Chilbongie? I CANNOT DO THAT AGAIN. Why would you make me do that again?!

Mr. Sunshine is the latest project from writer Kim Eun-sook and PD Lee Eung-bok of The Lonely Shining Goblin and Descended From the Sun, and it’s a historical drama set in the early 1900s about the “righteous army” that sprang up to defend the country as Japan exerted more and more dominance over Korea. Lee Byung-heon (Master, Inside Men) has signed on to headline as a character who gets taken to the U.S. as a young boy following the 1871 Shinmiyangyo armed conflict, and years later returns to Joseon, the country that abandoned him. While stationed in Joseon as a U.S. soldier, he meets a young aristocratic lady. Rising film actress Kim Tae-ri (The Handmaiden) has been cast to play the young lady who is the last of the noble Go family bloodline, one of the pillars of the nation.

Yoo Yeon-seok is confirmed to co-star as the son of a lowly butcher who flees his homeland and goes to Japan in search of a new life. He’s described as a tragic character who falls in love with Kim Tae-ri’s aristocratic young lady, and will risk everything for his love.

Even though I dread the heartache ahead of me, I do see why he was cast. It sounds like a complex character who’s meant to be villainous but tragically sympathetic, which makes me think of Park Ki-woong’s role in Gaksital. Yoo Yeon-seok actually has more experience with this darker, double-edged character type that he often plays in films (Love Lies, Perfect Proposal, The Royal Tailor, A Werewolf Boy, Introduction to Architecture), rather than the nice guy he’s been playing in dramaland, so I expect a gut-wrenching performance that will make me hate him, and love him, and hate that I love him.

So… what are the odds that he’ll secretly become a patriot and a double agent for the Japanese, and get a loveline with Kim Tae-ri’s maid? It could happen, right? *grasps at optimism straws*

Mr. Sunshine is in the works for an early 2018 premiere.

Now I am definitely intrigued by the possibilities with this drama. It sounds like it'll be heartbreaking but I am looking forward to it.

Whoa, I totally did not remember him in A Werewolf Boy (watched ages ago). First time I took notice of him was in Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim. I was meh about his casting at first, but he sure got me with his cute and swoony character.

Disappointed that he's the second lead here. This is a huge drama so he'll probably get a lot of interest (good for him), but I'm gonna have to pass this one anyway. :(

Wow what a news!

Though I don't know much about LBH, as I'm very new to Kdrama land, I think the writer must be very influential and definitely brave in her choices since her cast is really hmm.. special. LBH seems to have some not-so-nice background and he is cast as the main lead. Now YYS the handsome with a streak of wickedness in his look as the tragic second male lead. I must admit that now my interest in the drama just rose from 0 to perhaps 60%. Good job the writer-nim and the casting team.

Oh dear, I'm already shipping him instead of the lead actor and the drama hasn't even started yet! Let the hijinks begin.

This'll be interesting. I've never been able to warm to him as a romantic lead. Something has always seemed a bit "off" about those roles. Will be looking forward to seeing him perform a role that's more focused on pathos than romance.

Why didn't they get him to be the lead, though? He's a lot closer to what I would have had in mind. And I think a serious role would suit him. Look at your choices, casting people. Look at them.

I wasn't really interested in watching this drama at all even though I loved Goblin and Descendants of the Sun was interesting because I'm not really a fan of Lee Byunghun or Lee Taeri but now I may or may not turn in to see if Yoo Yeonseok tops his 2nd lead performance from Answer Me 1994 bc nothing can top that, right?

So I'm guessing there won't be a secondary cute couple for us to root for when we get tired of the main couple? Maybe it'll be like a Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim situation where the older lead actor doesn't have a love line with the leading actress.

I wonder with the success of Goblin, if KES is going to throw out her usual writing tropes and take a lot of risks.

NoooO!!!! Give him a girl please! Come on KES. You always give your second leads a happy ending. Don't be cruel to YYS. Not him! Puhlezz

Another reason why I would be skipping this drama. I can't handle to see Chilbongie not getting the girl yet again! Nope, one heartbreak is more than enough. I have yet to recover from that.

ARGH I shouted WHYYY when I read this but @girlfriday you said it. YYS never gets cast as the complex villainy but sympathetic characters he plays so well in films when in dramaland. Cant wait to watch this now.
Please give him a happy ending. At least a not entirely tragic ending

Good for Yoo Yeon Seok. Definitely will not watch now, but good for him.
