Okay. Don’t hate me but I need to know if the super mini short skirts that they wear in kdramas are actually what is worn in the work place. Is it? I am a HR professional by day, a kdrama watcher by night and a feminist throughout the day. To me there is ‘appropriate’ work clothing. Whether you work with men, women or children wearing a skirt or dress that will clearly show your undies if you move is not appropriate work clothing in my books.

Is what shown in kdrama’s real life? Asking for a friend…

My husband has travelled twice to SK, once was in the dead of winter and the weather insanely cold. He says there were girls walking around with mini short skirts shivering uncontrollably. He had asked his guide how they could wear them in such weather, and the guide had replied that they loved to follow fashion trends at any price!

Oh, while living in Ireland and working in a night club I was wondering how these girls survive. It was freezing cold out there and especially the students were always wearing miniskirts and relieving outfits. No winter coats, unless in spring time after huge sales. What can somebody do to make herself pretty to attract men it’s worth to write a novel for. 😉

It’s a cultural thing – the skirt could be as short as it can show your pretty legs (I don’t think it’s appropriate for women after their thirties neither) but a big no to show your arms or neckline. That’s considered as vulgar and unrespectful.

Right! I have never actually seen a cleavage bearing dress in a kdrama! But even arms?

It’s changing but they prefer long sleeves to not get tanned. But how do they do with their legs exposed? A lot of sun screen lotion! Some mountain rivers in France are extra polluted with sun screen lotion and gore-tex. Maybe it’s everywhere where there’re lots of tourists.

I’ve always wondered about that too.
I mean… it’s cute and all, but it must be terribly inconvenient? Especially in a workplace environment.

Just going by dramas – of you see more “realistic” dramas like misaeng, women are not wearing those mini skirts to work.

In my experience, no they don’t. However, I have heard that there are instances where people wear mini-skirts to work and no one says anything about it so every workplace is different. In general, I would say that the majority of people have the sense to wear more professional and modest clothing to work though.

I worked in a pretty casual environment, but I was surprised when one day a colleague mentioned I was “daring” for wearing a red dress to work (it wasn’t sexy or anything). Another co-worker assured me it was fine, but my jaw nearly dropped when a few months later one of the fellow teachers came to school in a fire-engine red, form-fitting, classy dress with matching red lipstick lol She wore it more than once so I guess no one spoke to her about it.

It’s possible that there is an unspoken business dress code everywhere, but because of the culture people just don’t scold a person for not following it and thus they continue to do so. I know in schools at least I have seen girls get away with hiking their skirts waaay above what should be allowed, but I only knew one teacher that would bother to tell them to pull them down. Outside of the professional environment though, it is indeed common to see girls in the dead of winter wearing mini-skirts and chasing after buses in stilettos. Meanwhile, I would get strange looks for pulling a hat out when the temperature dropped below freezing…
