I never thought I would see a PPL in a period drama. Okay, it wasn’t actually featured in the show but still, the commercial was hilarious. So was choosing the expressionless Han Guang Jun eating the ramen and buying the entire shelf!
My favorite period drama PPL is in Ever Night, in which Pizza Hut is a fancy banquet hall and people not only enjoying its pies (餅) but also the appetizer platter with buffalo wings with ranch dressings.
But, I kind of enjoy these ads. Look, I know the difference between when an actor is hawking a product and when they are in character, so Lan Zhan selling me ramen doesn’t undermine his character in the least. I find the straight up commercials less intrusive than some really weird ppl of random vacuuming all the damn time.
Now excuse me while I go to the store to buy some new face cream. Maybe, I should give Olay a try this time.
I don’t mind them either and even find them hilarious but maybe because of novelty factor. But if they would be daily occurence in my drama consumption I would be irritated too, especially if armor clad warrior would whip out a Dyson in a middle of battle 😉
I think because they are so overtly inserting the 21st century onto these sets, AND obviously outside of the narrative, I think they’re funny. They’re commercials. They are also fueling the quality of the production, so I say keep eating your ramen Lan Zhan.
It reminds of Splish Splash Love introducing instant noodles to Joseon characters. Now that was good PPL.
