Open Thread #30

I pretty much feel this every time an Open Thread rolls around, but thank god it’s Friday, yeah?

Have you entered my free Oldfish CD giveaway yet? I’ll be closing the giveaway in a few hours — noon PST, to be exact — so I can pick winners and get those posted.

So while I do that, go on and talk amongst yourselves. 😉

i like how the US media is only reporting about the increase in the number of ppl in China who have died from the earthquake..... and don't mention anything about the tens of thousands that were saved.....

@ Linda:

Oh, don't get me started on how biased and sensation the US media is trying to portray the entire situation. It's like the expect people to have some morbid fascination with the death toll... sigh...

I don't think it is biased or sensationalized reporting on the earthquake from the news I've been exposed to thus far.

The death toll is a devastatingly enormous number. It is part of the news of how mother nature took lives in a matter of seconds. I want to know all of the news and that includes the increasingly sad number of deaths.

I listen to National Public Radio and the news reporting has been informative with multiple live accounts and reporting on rescue efforts.

If people are interested, redcross and charitable organizations are accepting donations. http://www.redcross.org/news/in/profiles/Intl_profile_ChinaEarthquake.html

jessica & linda. don't you think that's better than not covering it at all or putting a polly anna spin to it? this way, money and help is going into china. the last time i checked, china wasn't the riches country in the world. i just hope money and help are going to the people who really need it.

Hey javabeans. I've noticed something strange. I keep getting the Han Hyo Joo banner, the one with the lime, not that I really mind though. I love that header to pieces.

whaleatape, if you want to see other banners, it helps to force-reload. try hitting CTRL+F5. (or command+R on a mac, I think.)

nixxochick,
I'm watching Last Scandal but with subs so I have to wait. Maybe others are in the same boat. I don't usually comment unless I've watched the episode.

@ daydreamer

Yeah, I know what you mean. I guess just between this and what happened in Myanmar it's like each news outlet is trying to outdo each other by reporting on a larger death toll.

Also, the main thing that gets me is how some editorials are now painting China's rescue effort as a way to spin the Olymipics.

I can understand a country wanting do this but it feel like they are just generating news for news sake.

Thanks for the link ginnie!

There's also a charitble group called Tzu Chi which is the largest Buddhist charity in the world. They've set up hospitals all over the world and are already in China helping.

You can find out more about them and how to help out here:

Done with finals ^^ They weren't that difficult, but they were weighing heavily on my psyche and now that they're done with, I'm a bit relieved.

About U.S. News: I would say that there's always events reported in that manner. I mean...you always hear about robberies here and there, death threats, etc. but never anything positive. I know I know...to actually have national or local news about anything happy/positive seems pretty naive and cheezy. There are statistics out there that indicate a decreasing number of violence (I know I'm being general, so sorry), but from watching the news, you don't get a sense of that.

You know, I have been angrily accused, not too long ago, that I "get all my news from the news."

The underlying sentiment being, "You are misinformed and accept populist propaganda." I thought there was something to the implication, yet also thought, "Well, duh!" In the age of the internet we're all better able to get a grasp of the various facets to an argument and be better informed... yet news has to come from somewhere.

Which is my way of both critiquing and appreciating the news system as it exists. Because there are always issues with the way things are reported (as long as one doesn't go out of one's way to distort things), but at a certain point you can't ask for the impossible, ya know? But this is just my tangential rambling...

Ah it's so hot here in AZ!!! Goodness gracious! I feel like I'm living in a gigantic oven!! It might be beautiful but looks aren't everything! Haha~

Off the subject of Korean drama....did anyone else watch the finally of Supernatural? I think I might be the only loser (haha) that watches that kind of stuff in this forum....but dang, how can you not watch the dynamic hottie duo~~

Though the finale was pooped......*sniff* *sniff* (don't want to give away the awesomeness)

Ooh, by the way, so loving You Are My Destiny! A good replacement for I Hate You But It's Fine. I'm a sucker for family fun dramas.

Sounds like it's hot everywhere. It might hit record heat wave temperatures in Vancouver this long weekend (Victoria Day).

Time to get out the sandals and floppies. Yay!!

PS Sad that my name didn't get picked. I hope Javabeans puts on another CD contest. That was fun. I love freebies.

Does anyone have any news yet on who was cast for Korean HYD and if the series will really go on in fall 2008?

Cuz ive heard rumours that the series might be set back cuz there is a HYD Japanese movie coming out in teh summer...and the Koreans will want to wait a couple of months after teh movie to show teh series?
