Open Thread #29

Been so busy with work and such that I’m totally behind on the news. At this point I think I know more about the Korean entertainment sphere than my local news. This must be rectified. (Or must it?)

I wish I could freeze time. Remember that ’80s TV show Out of This World, where half-alien teenager Evie could freeze time by touching her index fingers together? I used to do that ALL THE TIME, desperately hoping that if I wished hard enough, it could happen. See, that’s what happens when you’re taught the American dream (“try hard enough and you can achieve anything!”) since practically birth. Somebody should have clarified that magical woo-woo items didn’t apply.

SONG OF THE DAY

Aimee Mann – “One.” By far my favorite rendition of this song. [ Download ]

Hey Dramabeans! I know the feeling. At this moment I'm drowning in my work and studies! I wish I could stop time, just like Evie!
By the way, I love your blog! Very entertaining!

Yes, thank God it's Friday! I'm so tired and sleepy. I watched the last 2 episodes of Who Are You late last night and cried like a baby. Then I woke up at 3:36 am worried that my Mom is going to die suddenly and thinking how I need to be extra good to her while I can. LOL, I'm not kidding. And Sunday is Mother's Day.

Yes, thank you for your reviews and up lifting news. I look forward everyday to see what is up with you. Yes, I need this weekend to rejuvenate. I had a good week until some crazy lady got a hold of my email account and started calling me everything in the book. I don't need that. Anyway have a great weekend.

I am trying to start the first day of studying like crazy for the next 4-6 days for finals but alas I find myself sinking in unmotivation.

Javabeans have you ever heard of the Fulbright grant? I am applying for an English Teaching Assistantship for South Korea, where they would pay for everything and I would teach for a year.

I hope I win it because I plan to go to South Korea for at least a year after I graduate next May. However some people laugh at this because their like your African American and going to South Korea...everyone is going to give you the cold shoulder or gawk at you.

I for one have more faith in people so I am going to go for sure:)

Besides all that, today is looking nice in Sunny AZ

@dramabeans,
Wow, I watched that show too. And I just realized there are people here who weren't even born when that show was on. Ugh, not wow.

Magno's one of my favorite movies. Beautiful soundtrack too.

Is it Friday already?

Yeah, I know how it feels to be out of touch with local news because all I've been watching is korean dramas. I don't think I've missed much.

Even though I've finished school for now, life is getting busy with working out at the gym and taking korean language classes. Also, festival season is starting soon.

Sigh, so much to do, and so little time. Life is great.

Dele, I feel you. I am Black and have thought about teaching in Seoul next year, but I get the same feedback you have had from people. I am currently undecided as to whether to go or not because I want to be realistic about the whole thing. Dramabeans, any insight for us? That would help a great deal.

Dele and avonmarissa, have you checked out Expat Jane's blog? (Link in my sidebar.) She's a black woman from the States (LA, I think?) living in Korea, and although her blog isn't necessarily strictly about Korea, it might provide you with some insight into the experience.

I can't speak in general terms, and take what I say with a grain of salt -- I think there are always downsides to the experience, and I can't say that you'll never encounter prejudice or weird reactions. BUT I really think it all depends on your own attitude -- go in with an open mind and laughing spirit and you'll be sure to find positives about the experience that outweigh the negative. Does that sound too Pollyanna-ish? That's just my general life philosophy -- if you look for the bad, you'll find it. So look forward to the good, shrug off the rest, and everything's hunky-dory.

Personally, I'd say go for it. (That said, if you're exceptionally thin-skinned to slights or criticism, it may not be your bag. Even I got lots of ignorant reactions because I was American, even though I spoke the language and look like them. But I just laughed it off.)

lol...maybe chunky coffee is NOT good...but usually milk does last longer than the expiration date. I'm old school...I can hear my mom now...it's a sin to waste food...do you know how many starving kids there are in this world....yada, yada...what don't kill you will only make you stronger!

Have a great weekend!

I'm looking forward to be pampered by my hubs and daughter for mother's day...hint, hint, honey!

i always thought javabeans was way younger than gen X :D anyhoo, i used to watch that show religiously along with many others that i'm embarrased to mention here..

& some things haven't changed as far as being in my own little world all the time.. i've lately taken to daydreaming in my seminary classes.. i think one of my professors looked at me & blurted out the word "spaceships" during lecture once.. :(

i'm glad it's friday & i have the weekend to finish more reading, papers & art project for next week.. & i can't wait to go out & paint the town red once everything's over with..

have a great weekend everyone! :)

I don't know if any of you guys are MC Mong fans, but I just picked up his latest CD (which came out last month), and it's pretty sick.

Circus (track 2) is the single but I think it should be Loving You Till Death (I think thats the translated title, its track 5) should be it. The beginning of the song is way too cute.

Woot woot, Friday!!

Graduating in two weeks, class of '08, fighting!

@marcel,

Douglas Coupland says we belong to Generation Popseoul. Instead of talking to each other, we talk to the hand. ;)

If you were born 78-82, you can be either Generation X or Y. Iif you want the media to leave Britney alone, you're Generation LOL.

As a side note, In Jung Ok's characters (especially Ireland

hi dramabeans,

work is def. tiring. I work full time in k-town and I commute from mid OC. im out of my house for 12 hrs. a day but I still find loads of time to read your awesome website and watch my korean dramas.

I was totally on the same page as you for drama who are you? and I didn't really like on air in the beginning but it is so good now. I think you should give it a second chance. check it out when you have time.

its written really well and the scenes are captured with a little extra something, which I can't grasp at the moment but something is different. I can see some resemblances to krystof kiewslowski's trois coulers: rouge which is one of my fav. films. seriously check it out. the later episodes are really great.

@blake,

Mm hmm. Rain and Colbert are the Pac and Biggie of our generation. Where previous generations debate the photos at Grassy Knoll and the global warming, we fight over the before/after shots of Song Hye Kyo or our favorite vato loco, Hwanhee. Smell the inconvenient truth Korea, stop getting nose jobs!! :D

@stella,
Mid-OC (like Irvine?) to K-town . . . Wow. Isn't that like a daily 3 hour commute?

I'm kinda torn between Blue and White. White is something I can watch again and again, but Blue's musical motif resounds with me.

@marcel,

Oh '75 is definitely Generation X. Basically if you were a fan of Madonna before she started staying "oh bloody hell", you're Generation X. If you think Gwyneth Paltrow IS British, then you're definitely Generation Y. (And if you think Ben Aflleck is an ajhussi, turn off the TV and go do your homework!!)

@ stella: krystof kiewslowski’s trois coulers! All of a sudden you've made On Air very attractive to me. Blue is my all time favourite......

You all made me, a babyboomer, feel so very old but coming to this blog everyday is a therapy to reinvigorate me from daily chore and humdrum. Javabeans, thanks for creating this haven :-D

Finals...finals...and more finals. I have a crick in my neck and a sore in my legs.

2 more to go. So far, I got my biomedical lab grade back, and it wasn't too impressive. I'm quite pist, but let's just say that serving as a one credit course makes me feel a tad bit better.

I am spoiling myself lavishly once all of this is over.

Hey Javabeans!

Thanks for mentioning me.

As for you black Americans or blacks from other English speaking countries thinking about coming to Korea to teach, don't believe the hype.

It's pretty much all hype. Yes, there are racists here, but I meet more racist white people here than racist Koreans. I've discussed it at length in my blog from time to time as the mood or experience strikes.

But yeah, I blog about whatever hits me upside the head...right now, it's more left leaning politics and my new MySpace boyfriend John "I'm a liberal hotty" Cusack than Korea.

I think, for now, I've pretty much covered the basics on being black in Korea. I did the podcast, although I should maybe listen to it again and do a follow-up/update. But yeah, Koreans can be racist but if you're black you know what racism feels like anyway and it's not as bad as white folks, ironically, make it out to be.

re age---no comment ;)

re PopSeoul --- they're funny. Their m.o. is pure hate and, while it's mean, it's very funny. What I don't like about PopSeoul isn't so much what they say as that's how they roll. What I hate are the idiot comments they attract over there. But a blog that is pretty much about saying mean things about celebrities is going to attract the same sort of comments that Perez gets. They entertain me though. I just usually don't bother with reading the comments.
