Japanese broadcast set for Tamra the Island

MBC’s manhwa-adapted drama Tamra the Island [탐나는도다] hasn’t gained much ground in the viewership ratings, but regardless of its low numbers in Korea, it has been sold for a broadcast in Japan.

This is probably aided by the fact that Tamra is produced by Group Eight, the same producers behind Boys Before Flowers, which has already enjoyed a Japanese broadcast run, as has Goong. (It isn’t due to its cast, as the four main leads — Seo Woo, Im Joo-hwan, Hwang Chan-bin, Lee Sun-ho — are relative newcomers on the scene who don’t yet have international presence.)

Tamra is set in 17th-century Jeju island, and follows the events that unfold when an Englishman washes ashore from a shipwreck and is rescued by a local diver girl. An arrogant young nobleman sent to Jeju in exile and a mysterious Japanese sailor round out the main quartet. The drama will air on Japan’s Hallyu-specific Mnet channel, beginning its run on October 26.

Too bad Tamra Island is not doing well in the ratings. The drama has really grown on me. The main characters are so adorable and funny.

Do you think you'll be doing the recaps for this one? Tamna's the first drama in a long time that has really made me want to watch more. It definitely deserves some recaps.

@3 kotatsulove

JB is recapping this drama; (links to Episodes 1 & 2 are above ^^).

I am thoroughly enjoying this show and my feelings are divided right down the middle as to who I want Beo-jin to end up with! Both of the male leads are completely adorable.

I wish someone in my real life would get the joke when I refer to the bathroom as "my treasure". No one appreciates my Kdrama potty humor at all. ;-)

could definitely see the Japanese enjoying this manhwa adaptation! It's the only currently-air drama that I'm planning on continuing.

@ langdon813. Beo-jin's personality fits more with William's...but William is a bit bland and her interactions with Park Kyu are more interesting and Park Kyu is also a more interesting character

Do you know when Strike Love will be broadcasting in Japan? I wouldn't be able to see it anyway but maybe someone will write about the missing episodes when they air there. I can't get over the absurd ending. I knew it ending was chopped yet I watched it anyway and now I'm addicted.

@5 asianromance

************MILD SPOILER ALERT******************

I agree; Park Kyu has that "I secretly love you so I'm going to act like I can't stand you" act down to a T, which makes me root for him just a little bit more than William.

But then again, the "hands-on-our-pounding-hearts" scene between William and Beo-jin was really cute, and the way he ran madly through the dark to go get her to leave with him was good too. I just really like them both...but if pressed I'd have to admit that I want Beo-jin to stay on Tamra with Kyu.

Tamna is such an enjoyable drama.
I'm loving Im Joo Hwan as Park Gyu.
Too bad about the ratings, (even though they're never an accurate indicator for me anyways). First, ROI...now Tamna...soon Chuno... :D

@ langdon813
LOL. You've definitely been immersed in Korean culture when the bathroom humor starts. ;)

@9 hjkomo

I know, right? :-) It's so true.

Im Joo-hwan is the reason I started watching this; I'd just finished Snow Queen and thought he was really good in that. I'm so glad I did, this show is a lot of fun.

I have fallen in love with this drama. I think this drama is extremely well-made and I am hopelessly in love with Park Kyu played by Im Joo-hwan, who was one of the main reasons why I hesitated to start this drama before. I really hope you will continue to recap this. I love, love, love the interactions between Beo-jin and Kyu.

@11 Amy: I'm definitely rooting for Park Kyu and Beo-Jin. Poor Park Kyu was close to tears in episode 5 when Beo-Jin insisting on leaving with William. Can't wait for episode 6, preview shows Park Kyu and Beo-Jin kissing. I do hope JB continues to recap. Surprisingly I'm enjoying Tamra Island more than My Fair Lady.

This drama has grown on me so much. Seo Woo is a very engaging actress and one of the vary few who can do the whole pouting thing without me rolling my eyes. Love her!

This is a very nice and lighthearted drama, that I don't mind finishing this show. The BeoJin-William and BeoJin-Gyu scenes are very cute, but I still hope that she'll be with Gyu.

Too bad the ratings aren't doing well, but then again, its not all about the ratings.

i didn't know whether i'd like it or not but i am very much falling in love with park gyu or rather im joo hwan mainly because he is totally phwoar (!) but also because he can play the complexities of emotion (seemingly) in a single cough- love it!

william is super cute and i can see why he and beo-jin are fast falling for each other.

what i don't really get is park gyu and what he sees in beo-jin apart from, ok, the obvious looking after her family thing, sensitivity, honesty etc. but she's thick yo! and i don't really believe 'suddenness' of his conscience. i mean: ep one park gyu = up himself arrogant prat; ep six = investigative hero in the shadows/moralistic apparently/in love with beo-jin. eh?!

on a more frivolous note (like my ramblings have been anything but!) does anyone else reckon 1. seo woo's lips are hugely pouty 2. she looks sort of vapid most of the time 3. her character cries a LOT 4. her boobs are disproportionately huge? i mean really, she is so skinny too...*confused

apologies if i offend anyone on the last point- not my intention at all- just curious!

I'm addicted to this drama as well. It's too bad that Tamra isn't getting the good ratings it deserves in Korea but I hope it gets some love in Japan. The production values for Tamra are high and Seo Woo is adorable (and very beautiful too). Seo Woo pulls off the cute, bubbly act really, really well and I'm totally falling for her. I can't wait until her new movie Paju comes out because it seems to be more of a serious movie and I'm curious to see if Seo Woo can do serious, dramatic roles as well as she does cute, bubbly roles. But I won't love her any less if she can't do dramatic characters as good as she does cutesy ones :)

Nazreal,

about Park Gyu, I think he's starting to fall in love with Beo Jin, but he just hasn't realized it yet. (or he doesn't want to admit it) but then again, I don't have too much to say about it since I haven't seen ep6 yet. Well, I don't think his feelings for Beo Jin are rushed, such that he has already showed her his feelings.

about Seo Woo. 1. Yes, I do find her lips a bit pouty, and it reminded me a bit of Angelina Jolie's, actually (how funny). 2. Do you mean she's dull with her looks or her character? If its regarding her character, its probably because she feels like she wants to be someone else, not just a diver forever in the island. (kinda like Hercules (Disney movie) going the distance and wants to be someone.) 3. Does she? I don't know, I don't really notice it, so I won't comment on that. 4. This one I lol'd. I did look up some info on her before I saw the drama, and I think that's her body type already. (unless she had surgery, which I have no idea.) She's a newcomer, so there's really not too much information about her.

@luraaa,

hum, i do agree that he is starting to have feelings for her (cue opening his door constantly to see if she's about and coughing like crazy whenever he gets stressed)- i'd be interested to know your thoughts after you watch ep 6 as i am inclined to believe that he's not unaware and although he doesn't show anything towards her, he.... def knows!!! whereas as beo-jin is of course, totally clueless.

(i guess when i meant vapid i meant the whole staring into space as if she is thinking of absolutely nothing and the fact that when she goes about her daily business of....carrying water she just seems a bit....well...lame? ok compared to her hardcore mother.... being in the post MNIKSS era i guess i'm expecting too much, so i put it down to the endearing qualities of her character! or an after effect of the acting. i dunno! i'm too cynical which is terrible haha!)

and ps. poor william! or should i say *illiam! he's such a bizarre character. he's seems so sensitive and gentle yet the script writers get him to say some pretty crass english phrases that are inconsistent with his character ('where the *hell* were you?' to yan)

@Nazreal

I agree totally about William. I tend to blur out the English speaking scenes in my head while I'm watching. I find the way William is written to speak like a modern day kid particularly jarring (but hey, at least they're trying lol).

i really love this drama so far ^-^ i think it's cute, sweet, funny, the scenery is gorgeous, the soundtrack is very unique and beautiful and i think the cast is great. I love the fact that they chose some newbies for some of the roles ^.~

does anyone know where i can actually find the whole soundtrack? i'd love to get it ^-^

haha, i'm totally loving this drama too, ratings rarely matter though it is a good thing to know other people, especially those in korea are enjoying it as much as i do, as in sons of sol pharmacy. i hope the japanese audience appreciates it.
i'm rooting for park gyu-beojin. im joo hwan has got the character down to a t, and i find seo woo absolutely adorable. i'm actually pleasantly surprised at the english, it's better than i expected. william is nice and all but i find park gyu's character far more compelling. i'm glad to see fresh actors, cos then i can immerse myself in the characters and the story without preconceptions of the acting.
the soundtrack is gorgeous (:
could someone kindly explain the whole smuggling issue, i hardly get it ):
thank you for sharing this jb (:

Nazreal,

Ah, you might snicker at me if I say this, but I haven't seen MniKSS yet. *facepalm* But I kinda get what you mean with Beo Jin. I guess she seems vapid at times because she knows that she's not the best diver in the low-class group. Her mother is the leader, so that alone puts more pressure on her. (OT: btw, her mother played an awesome role in Story of a Man, I practically jumped when I saw her because I loved her character in the series.) And also, I think it was 3rd or 4th ep, when she cried because her mom embarrassed her in front of the other divers when they went to the island overnight, and Beo Jin complained that she doesn't really want to be a diver, but she has no choice but to be one because her mom keeps telling her its her destiny.

Doing the household tasks everyday must be completely monotonous for her, so she appears dull and bored whenever she does them. She doesn't put much energy on them because she doesn't really like doing it, but she has to.

on William: the scriptwriters should've seen movies during the Victorian period. (be more like Mr. Darcy, I think. but then again, that's too late cause this drama was during the 17th century.) anyway, point is, he is growing on me, despite some of his lines.

Park Gyu first encounter with Beo Jin at the offering prayer, he was angry when accidently knudged by Beo Jin with food in her hands, -
that was a fast reaction with the fan he hold which we didn't quite aware that he is a 17th century chaebol in disguise to investigate illegal activities in Tamna island.

Living with her family make him realised the hardship and harsh environment of Tamna citizen whereby their daily food comes from the sea. His first emotion with Beo Jin when her mom chided her for failing to harvest the sea crop.
In episode 6 her mom don't mind if Park gyu be the son-in- law although he is called the "gwayundari".

Yes Beo Jin is so in love with William so Park Gyu have to make a fast move to capture her heart beside solving the illegal activities. Did the 100 years old ginseng brought by his faithful housekeeper aroused his libido in epi. 7 ?

Beo Jin likes to enter his room, maybe that's when love blossom for the 'troublemaker". Somehow Im Jo Hwan capture our hearts too - mysteriously.
Keep on watching !!!

I'm so glad that it's going to have a Japanese broadcast. It's the only drama currently airing that I'm watching, and it's WONDERFUL. The storyline is fresh (even though there's a love triangle), and I definitely give the music director props. The sad moments are balanced out by delicately played music instead of being swept away by intense, blaring, melodramatic noise.

@ 23 sneee
About the whole smuggling things, i think the one who responsible with the stealing of the tribute goods are the merchant with that evil woman in red as the leader. And the elder of the Tamra Island knew it too. The woman sent his brother to disguise as Secret Police because the goverment starting to take notice of the incident. She sent him to misleaded the official in Tamra Island and taking care of stolen goods.

I actually don't want beo jin with park kyu.... I want her with william. From the chapters I've read of the manwha William has a much larger role in it than the drama. It kinda pisses me off how you BARELY see william when he takes up a lot of the manwha.... I'm all for interracial couples! :]]] Don't get me wrong, Park kyu is really awesome! But I really think beo jin and william are adorable together. If beo jin gets together with park kyu the storyline would be sooooooooo cliche..... I reallllllllllllly hope that beo jin and william get together! :]

I agree with post number 38...Pip you are the first post ive read that is rootin for Beo Jin and William..i had a dead gut feeling right from the beginning that she was going to end up with Park-Gyu...but as the series went on it realli seemed like Beo-Jin truly liked William..it realli set my hopes up high. i just finished the series and i am feeling realli down now...i dont get why her feelings changed so suddenly from her worryin about William one sec to her thinking about Gyu the next...William was the one who saved her from drowning..and no credit was even given to him..no1 even knew..and he took a bunch of sword wounds an stuff for her..and they had that whole promise scene and heart beat scene and the whole runnin to each other in the market moment....omg im so pathetic im tearin up. i am incredibly disapointed with the ending. blah.
