Prime-time experiment disappointing for Angel’s Temptation

After several dramas fell to Queen Seon-deok‘s Monday-Tuesday domination over the past several months, SBS tried to experiment with its scheduling in order to protect its new Monday-Tuesday series Angel’s Temptation. It therefore shuffled its broadcast schedule to air Angel’s Temptation at a time where it would be unchallenged by drama competition from the other stations. (10pm is traditionally the prime-time drama hour, and Angel’s Temptation was the first prime-time miniseries to air in the 9pm hour instead.)

However, two weeks in, the experiment has provided middling results, with its first three episodes drawing 10.3%, 11%, and 11.3%, respectively. These are not awful numbers for a prime-time show, but when considering that it had no competition, the results are quite disappointing, and there is reportedly a high probability that the 9pm trial will die here. Adding to the letdown is the fact that Angel’s Temptation had been hoping to recreate the sweeping success of the over-40% ratings brought in by its predecessor, Wife’s Temptation. (Angel isn’t a real sequel, but the plot is similar and it comes from the same writer-director pairing.)

SBS had made the move to avoid losing another drama to Seon-deok, after Ja Myung Go and Dream both brought in ratings around and below the 5% mark. An SBS rep explained that they made the move to offer “a variety of choices” to viewers, but at the root of the issue was their desire to avoid Queen Seon-deok.

Since Angel’s Temptation is still early in its run, it is premature to decree the move a definite success or failure, but because the trial has been unimpressive thus far, those involved with the following drama, medical sageuk Jejoongwon, have openly stated that they are confident they will be airing back in the 10pm slot. SBS’s drama department is hedging their bets by saying, “The schedule can change at any time.”

I just think the TV stations in Korea (SBS, KBS, MBC) depends too much on ratings brought in by the dramas. No doubt the ratings bring in a lot of revenue from advertisement, but popularity does not measure only in the numbers of the ratings.

There are so many popular dramas that are not doing well on their ratings. Most of all there are a lot of high quality dramas, in terms of directing, story, writing, and actor portrayal, that are extremely undervalued in Korea.

I am happy for dramas that receive a high rating and at the same time delivers a great acting, dialogue and plot lines.. but that is not ALL that matters.

heh. i bet it's because a lot of people watching seondeok aren't gonna bother tuning in an hour earlier to watch yet another drama.

That poster makes Bae Soo-bin's body look weird; his chest is hugely out of proportion to his waist. Sometimes Photoshop is NOT your friend.

I agree wtih @2 Sue, but you know, Queen SeonDeok is getting boring. I was so into it before and now, I'm just as satisfied reading the plot summary.

Another turnoff for viewers regarding Angel's Temptation may be the racy posters. I tend to stay away from dramas that look too - well, raunchy, sexy, or whatever the right word is.

okay, i know this is totally off topic but...... can you please do a recap for MY LOVELY SAM SOON episodes? haha. you liked it right? (@javabeans) it's just that i can't get it out of my head and i really really want to hear your opinion about every episode..about the acting, plot, dialogues etc. If you don't mind, of course. :D

@ Mei

I think JB has enough on her hands to recap as it is so the chances of Sam Soon recaps are not good. It's hard enough to keep up with current dramas! Maybe some time in the distant future.

^yeah Javabeans doesn't have the time to recap the whole series.

That poster seems like a good reason to watch the show tbh. Im intending to watch it once Bae Soo Bin comes in, other than that it looks absolutely tacky.

It's not a perfect strategy, as people still want to watch the news. But, then again, imagine the ratings if it really had to go against QSD.

Also, Temptation of Wife ran in the dinnertime slot, so it was originally competing with sitcoms and daily dramas, not the primetime shows. Hard to say how much audience carryover there would have really been if it weren't competing with QSD or any blockbuster at the mo.

"those involved with the following drama, medical sageuk Jejoongwon, have openly stated that they are confident they will be airing back in the 10pm slot. "

Provided that QSD doesn't get extended again (very unlikely it seems), Jejoongwon won't need to compete with QSD. Don't know whether Dong Xi will follow right after QSD though.

I loooove Angel's Temptation. I agree with above comment, QSD is getting boring. I was so loved it for a while, now it's boring. I am satisfied with just caps.

^I agree too. I was so excited about QSD back in the episode 20s. I used to check the thread religiously for updates and now I'm just like... meh and don't even bother to keep up with episode summaries/posts on Soompi.

Granted, I've always thought the show had an absolutely atrocious script, but the fantasy RPG-sageuk style made it really exciting to watch on an elementary level, lmao. Back then, you wanted to tune in to the next episode to see whether Deokman accepts her real identity, or see whether Bidam finally joined up with Team Deokman, etc. since they stopped at a cliffhanger, but now they've even lost that kind of basic adrenaline-pumped, sword-waving draw, it's plain boring. The only reason why I'm considering catching up with QSD is because Kim Nam Gil is amazing.

So really, if they swapped Angel's Temptation back to the slot against QSD, I'd probably pick Angel's Temptation over the overrated blockbuster! And definitely Jejoongwon > QSD. And re: that poster's raciness, I'm pretty conservative but even I don't think there's anything too wrong with it, since you can really understand the theme - Lee So Yeon tempting the angel, Bae Soo Bin, whose white wings show signs of grey because he's unable to resist those feelings of hatred and desire for revenge.

I have to admit I like Angel's Temptation. It sounds like the other networks are just gonna have to suck it up until the show ends. So, maybe they should be thinking about how to win better ratings with better shows when QSD is over in 9 weeks.

Uhhh...TOW never reached the 20% nationwide rating plateau until episode #32. It's a bit early to be worrying about the ratings right now. Just wait it out for a few more weeks and see what happens.

I, on the other hand, tend to stay away from dramas that do NOT look 'sexy', 'raunchy', etc. There's nothing worse than dramas feeding on the evocation of passion while their prudery falsifies the content of passion, and to such a degree that entire series fail to generate even a scintilla of truth about their own subject matter.

Its rating will go up once Bae Soo Bin appears... Nevertheless, this drama is quite interesting... I am totally hooked...

i think the ratings of Angel's temptation wouldn't go up as high as TOW....baesoobin looks boring...tow's casts are more exciting and intense.
