Dennis Oh in Jaebum’s Hype Nation

Dennis Oh (whose full name is Dennis O’Neil) had been a part of dance-themed film project Hype Nation back in earlier casting days when it had starred singer Sohn Dam-bi. However, she has since dropped out and the film has brought onboard a new cast, so I’d figured everyone would be replaced. But now Dennis Oh has been confirmed for the project (again), and plays rival to its lead, played by ex-2PM leader Jay Park (aka Jaebum).

Jaebum plays a member of a b-boy group that goes up against an American group (B2K). Dennis’ character is named Tony Kane (Cane?) and basically harasses Jaebum’s character; he’s a gambler and member of a money-laundering operation.

Also cast is Japanese actor Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as gang boss, and taking a leading female role is T-ae, a member of the new kpop girl group Rania. The movie will be directed by Christian Strickland and has a production budget of 25 million dollars.

Hype Nation began filming on June 20 and is currently shooting in Korea. Dennis Oh, who has had small roles in U.S. drama series Forgotten and Melrose Place in the past year, will return to Korea in mid-July to join filming. This will be his first acting project in Korea since 2008’s East of Eden.

Frankly I am utterly uninterested in the movie, but I’ll be curious to see whether this American co-production will prove to be successful. As for Dennis himself… well, he seems like a super nice guy. And I did respect that he actually made a big effort to act in Witch Amusement entirely in Korean, which can’t have been easy for him. On the other hand, I’ve yet to find his acting passable in any of his roles; he’s extremely pretty, but incredibly wooden and out of sync when he acts; it’s like he forgets to be IN the moment and just works hard at delivering dialogue. Maybe he’ll do better in English-speaking roles?

Another upcoming project he’s got planned is the Chinese remake of Autumn Fairy Tale, in which he plays the character originated by Won Bin. Wait, WHAT? Now THAT is much more interesting news to me! Off to dig up more details…….

Honestly my first thought when I read this was "Crap. He's gonna ruin the movie." YES his acting is that bad. Why hasn't Dennis taken an acting class? He really should. Do it for us! It really is painful to watch him in things.

Frankly, the movie doesn't sound like much but people watch dance movies for the dancing so long as that's good, it'll be fine. I hope it's not awful for Jaebum's sake.

Actually Jaebeom said it himself that he only has like 10 lines and the lead in the movie is actually one of the B2K members. There is only 2 members from B2K that are in the movie. I like Jaebeom but I think people are putting too much pressure for this movie to succeed or fail. I honestly don't want it too be that bad because if it totally bombs you'll have all those haters online talking crap about him again. But then even if the movie completely sucks... fangirls outside of U.S will go watch it and it will make money regardless. Instead of Dennis Oh they should of cast T.O.P =p

Jaebum? Who the fuck is that. Eh, Well I don't really give a shit. To those who are dissing Dennis Oh; I'm not gonna lie and say that he's amazing at acting but please.. Its not unbearable. He's been taking acting classes in America. & He hasn't been starred in a movie in quite a while, am I wrong? Frankly, I'm looking forward to his acting.
Daniel and Dennis = 2 Different people. Stfu.
&Instead of being shallow, how 'bout just wishing the best for the movie in general. Avec the cast.

If Dennis Oh improved on his acting ability, it would do well. But at the same time, if somehow Dennis Oh's acting improved alot, he would probably no longer be in the Korean entertainment market. The american market would start noticing him and likely cast him in the movie role there, and he has no more incentive to stay in the Korean market because the AMerican entertainment market pays much much more. Besides he's not fluent in Korean. He would fare much better in America..if only he tried to act instead of depending on his looks..

The reason Dennis Oh and Daniel Henney "suck" at acting is because they are both in the Korean entertainment market. THe korean entertainment market doesn't allow them to improve because the acting is much different from the american entertainment market. not only the language barrier, but koreans have a different way of expressing their emotions and thoughts. dennis and daniel both grew up in america and are heavily americanized (due to having a father that is white)...so they would fare much better acting in the american market. luckily, dennis and daniel look better than 99% of the actors in the market (no offense, but every korean actor looks the same. they look childish and boyish) so that they are both given some opportunity. i bet, you start putting these guys in american movie roles, and they will improve fast. dennis has got to get out of the "nice guy" image because he is way too shy to be an actor even if he looks good, he never opens himself up. probably the way he grew up..he has got to have more confidence in himself. I think Jay will even act better than him because it seems that jay has lots of confidence in interviews, online, etc, and doesn't depend on his looks but rather his ability. either way i think Dennis should get out of the korean entertainment because it won't help him be the best he can be.

Hype Nation is out now. One can buy the DVD. I think Dennis Oh is stunning - just flawless. He acts well enough. I wish an agent would grab him for more Korean TV dramas.
