Lee Min-ho cast in City Hunter (?) (!)

WHAT?! I won’t believe this until it’s on the air, but Lee Min-ho has reportedly been selected to headline a Korean drama adaptation of City Hunter, the popular 1980s manga and anime about a womanizing detective.

The lead character is Saeba Ryo, who runs the City Hunter business with his partner, Kaori Makimura, and is a bit of a perv. (He almost exclusively takes cases from pretty women.) He also fights crime with the help of his trusty partner (some might call her his Girl Friday [Swoon. -GF]), who secretly loves him.

I wrote about City Hunter back in 2008 when a Korean-Japanese production was being planned starring Jung Woo-sung. I’m going to guess that fell through. This version is slated for SBS and sounds like it might actually make it.

City Hunter was created by Hojo Tsukasa in 1985. There have been a few live-action adaptations attempted in the past, but none seemed to be that successful. According to one rep from the production company, the series has received numerous requests for drama adaptations, but those hadn’t come into fruition because they didn’t satisfy the creator’s requests. However, Hojo Tsuaka was reportedly satisfied with Lee Min-ho as the lead — no doubt thanks to his star-making role in last year’s uber-hit Boys Before Flowers.

The original was set against 1980s Tokyo; this version will take place in 2011 in Seoul. The Ryo character has been renamed “Kang Jin.”

OMFG. I may love this, or love to hate it. Either way, love.

God I think I will cry. First they trashed Hana Yori Dango, then they are trashing Mishievous kiss (dry plot drama), but they still persist and want to destroy the story of the anime of my childhood. Has not korean people yet understand that they can't remake manga's stories ? And non actor LMH ? You mean the man who plays himself in every show (and the way they destroyed Domyoji's character, spirit and strengh) ? Did all good actors die in Korea ?

non actor LMH? where did you read that he is not an actor?

HE IS AN ACTOR!!!(he started as an actor and is still an actor only. he is not a singer turned actor unless you mixed up with Min Ho of Shinee)

He has won the best newcomer in KBS Drama award during the year BOF was shown. and he even went far to win the Best Newcomer award in 'baeksang award' (this is a national award ceremony whereby all the 3 tv stations dramas/actors/actresses compete together). If winning this award cannot be called as an actor, i wonder how would you deem those who can't even act(i shall not name who)? for those who has not won an acting award(not including popularity award), are you saying that acting is a playground for those who are singers turned actors?

Sorry but this man is not a good actor for me. That's true unlike KHJ he has some potential but he come off fake a lot of times especially as JP.

Wow, Lilly, you sure have a very strong opinion about the anime of your childhood and about how Kdrama PDs are portraying them.

You have the right to your own opinion and I respect them and I hope you could accord the same respect to my opinion.

Thank you karen and lahlita for your comments to Lilly's comment on LMH because I am in total agreement when it comes to LMH’s acting talent-wise…

I have mentioned this before under my comments on his acting in Boys Before Flowers and Personal Taste…

I believe he is like an unpolished gem of an actor and he has shown that he has got what it takes to literally carry a drama, the way that he did with BOF, even at the tender age of 21/22…

A truly talented and gifted actor is one who is able to convey the deepest and most complex of human emotions with just his eyes and facial expressions…and LMH is one such actor…

For those who wish to criticise LMH’s acting, do bear in mind his young age and lack of experience in tackling truly challenging roles – both of which, however, were not evident from his star-making turn in BOF and convincing take in PT.

Let us remember that ALL of us start our lives from knowing, and being able to do, nothing and learn what we need to along the way.

It is unconstructive and non-productive to simply criticise. What would be useful and beneficial is giving the person a break – allow him/her the time and space to learn and develop, while giving advice, suggestions and providing support, encouragement and patience.

Don’t we all wish the same for ourselves? Don’t we all wish that others would not be so easy to highlight our faults, and failing to see, or worse, failing to allow us the time and space to strive to achieve, our potential? :)

MOKKORI!!! (but I'm sure this drama won't have any mokkori in it...)
I was madly in love with Saeba Ryo when I was a kid and then in my mid-twenties when I watched again (and read) City Hunter - aka Nicky Larson in France.
I am now a 32 year old mother and I still have a soft spot for Ryo... True love never dies!

I thought Lee Min Ho was fantastic in BoF. He made me fall in love with Goo Jum Pyo, whereas I feel nothing for Domyoji in HYD!
True, I was a bit disappointed with Personal Taste because of the script and the storyline (I expected too much of it, wanted it to be a lot funnier) but it wasn't Lee Min Ho's fault. He was the reason why I tried to stick with this drama.
I think Lee Min Ho already looks the part (I was fan of the cartoon Nicky Larson which was based on this manga and Lee Min Ho is just like the hero of this cartoon). He can play it well if he's well-directed and this drama can be good if the script is well-written as well.

I don't care if you felt nothing for Domyoji. Domyoji is Domyoji like it or not. BOF was a destruction of HYD storyline and spiri and I can't forgive the way they made this character a weak emo wreck and LMH emo overracting crying scenes to please fangirls ! I mean Ryo Saeba ? The charismatic Nicky Larson ? The anime of my childhood ? The character who made me love manga ? Ryo Saeba played by...

Hasn't yet Korean PD's learnt their lesson ? Stay away from manga stories !

@ 55, 59, 59.1.1 Lilly

Aw, Lilly, you're taking this pretty hard. I'm sorry that Lee Min-ho might destroy "the anime of [your] childhood." Hopefully this anime isn't the axis on which your entire childhood revolved though? Because that would be really sad, Lilly. Find some comfort in the fact that there must be at least one memento from your childhood that Lee Min-ho hasn't managed to screw up yet, yeh? Don't cry.

hey lilly, it's only minho im sure he doesn't have that much power to ruin the anime of your childhood. if the anime is that gd, (pardon me, i have not watch it yet) it will still be a gd memory regardless of whether minho is portraying it or not. n the show won't suck just because it's minho, who knows, maybe the storyline will make minho shine =)

LOL Lilly. even the author of the manga agree with LMH's casting. he should feel even sadder his manga will be ruined by your so called non-actor LMH. but of course, the author knows his manga better than you and with him agreeing with LMH surely he see LMH fits this character. who are you to say LMH doesnt fit it instead. sure everyone has opinion, and this is just my opinion.

i've been wanting to see LMH in a new project. and this plot and character look very interesting. Minho as a womanizer? bring it on! LMH still has a lot of room for improvement but he has great charisma that i think he can pull off any character right now and carry the drama as his own. honestly, both BOF and PT have not very good quality of writing and directing. i've been hoping his next project will be a good stuff, script and direction. i hope this one will. cant wait!!

Lee Min Ho as Ryo Saeba? I don't think so... Ryo is in his 30s (which doesn't correspond to LMH), with a lot of muscles (which LMH doesn't have) and a womanizer (which is not LMH's style). And I really don't want the Koreans to destroy the character of Ryo Saeba...

Well, I don't have to watch it but I'm just saying :p...

what is the meaning of an actor? an actor is someone who will transform themselves to the character they are supposed to portray in the drama.

Just from his past characters and we have people(not even sure if they are really LMH's fans) giving negative remarks. He did not fail in his previous roles, instead he saved 1 of the drama(BOF) and managed to do a good job for his previous one(PT).

i hope he will makes these people eat up their words if he really took up this role.

i have faith in you , Min Ho.. prove to these people and makes them speechless.

No, I do not know the actor nor have I seen any of his previous works of art apparently..... ;) I'm going by the char description. that is why you should not even criticise that he is not suitable for the role just by his looks..

even if an actor looks is suitable for the role, it does not necessarily means the casting is right.. the acting and script is also part of the whole package of success, isn't it?

I am cautiously curious. I don't know anything about this anime so I have no preconceived expectations, but from the comments here he is being cast against against type and age. Hmm, interesting. This could go either way. Lee Min-ho is the only reason that I kept up with Boys Before Flowers; I was annoyed whenever he wasn't on the screen. And while I didn't love Personal Taste, I really enjoyed him in it. Therefore, I will check this out. His talent and charisma (and gorgeousness) are enough to commit me to the first four episodes.

Lee Min Ho is indeed a cool, responsible and hard working young actor who takes his roles seriously so as to depict the characters in his dramas well. I have seen him in BOF self- requesting to jump into the icy-cold pool in winter until he himself feels satisfied, just to create a scene realistically. He has been selected/approved personally by the author of the manga to take the lead in the "City Hunter." The confidence shown by the author (who chose him out of so many actors in S. Korea) in his acting skills is already an achievement for Lee Min Ho. I am optimistic that the drama will be a great "hit" as the story-line is great, especially with Lee Min Ho as lead. Hope the female lead will also be a dedicated actress.

Who wanted to read City Hunter? Here you go.

http://www.mangafox.com/manga/city_hunter/

City Hunter is a MANGA (a comic book) first and foremost. The ANIME (which is the animated cartoon) came afterwards and is not and should not be the canon.

I laugh at @lilly bc the anime is just silly stuff, no worries about LMH bastarizing it, which I don't think he'll do either.

The manga is epic, awesome to the nth degree. It wasn't one of the most popular serials in the 90s for nothing. Tsukasa Hojo wet his ears with Cat's Eye first (a story about three sisters who are cat burglars by night, and one sister's BF being the lead detective on their case), then dropped his magnum opus City Hunter on us.

Tsukasa Hojo wrote and drew City Hunter in his trademark style - very hyper real and the lades, OMG did Hojo love his ladies. Each story has a new lady in distress for our anti-hero to rescue. Get ready lots of R-rated scenes (no NC-17, thank the lord).

Anyways, I don't mind an updated take on CH - with a younger Ryo. But in the manga, his age is always a secret, but he's likely in his late 30s, at least, when he pairs up with Kaori, since he first met her when she's a kid and he's a mercenary already.

Jackie Chan's City Hunter was an abomination and should never be spoken of again. Ever. It was not City Hunter. It was Jackie Chan in the City doing his gummy Jackie routine. With the title of City Hunter put on in the front of it. Tsukasa apparently almost keeled over when he watched it.

As for LMH in guyliner, this whole man-in-guyliner thing is rather hot, and yet not. Until I got into Korean entertainment, I'd never seen a pop culture in which men being coated in visible and at-times stylistic makeup was the mainstream. I'm simultaneously attracted and repelled by it.

I agree that LMH would need to put up at least a few punds of muscle for this role and He might be too young for the role but I think he could pull it off nicely. And if he does it right it could make his career, Ryo Saeba is a very complicated character, it requires both comic and dramatic skills in the span of seconds... It'll be a good challenge for the actor who plays him, be it LMH or someone else.
