Park Shi-yeon’s Best Love cameo

The Hong sisters strike again with another cameo featuring one of their previous cast members: Park Shi-yeon, whose first acting role came in their second drama (My Girl), is coming back for Best Love, which premiered today.

I have to say I’m disappointed that she’s not playing the same character, although it’s not because I had any great affection for her tennis star character from My Girl. In fact, from a purely acting standpoint I’m glad that Park has moved far away from that performance, where her inexperience really showed. (She was thankfully much improved in her latest role, Coffee House.)

Rather, it’s because the Hongs love to allude to their prior dramas with many of their cameos, though the revisited characters are often like alternate-world versions of the originals. See: Hana/Chun-hyang and Mong-ryong coming back in My Girl in slightly altered versions, or flirty Mi-nam making a pass at Lee Seung-gi in My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho. (Really, O naive ex-nun? What next, you take up drinking, cruising, and whatever other sins you’ve picked up along the way?) But character lobotomies aside, the cameos usually enough of a cheeky nod to satisfy fans.

In Best Love, Park plays a top star coming on the same matchmaking variety program that our drama’s leads, Gong Hyo-jin and Cha Seung-won, appear on. (I still contend that she coulda carried over her Maria Sharapova-esque “tennis beauty” role, but oh well.) Park’s appearance appears to be more substantial than the teeny blips usually afforded cameos, as she’ll be in next week’s two episodes.

I never really taken an interest in Park Shi-yeon until Coffee House, which reversed my opinion of her acting. I was pleasantly surprised!

Have loved Park Shi-yeon ever since Coffee House. I never really noticed her before, but she knocked that role out of the water.

I miss her! Really want to see her star in more dramas as the lead - and not in tragic roles, but in fun, quirky, vivacious strong roles like her Coffee House character!

Totally agree, I was so disappointed when PYJ replaced her in that one movie (don't remember which), I wanted to see her in another role a lot. She was, to be frank, detestable (as a character and actress) in My Girl but she was lovely in CH. Totally won me over.

And yay now she's going to be cameoing in a Hong sisters drama! How happy this makes me, words cannot describe.

Her role in My Girl was indeed detestable... but that's generally the lot of the female second lead.

I adore her dimples when she plays a cheerfully, cutely wicked character like in Coffee House. Awww, she so needs to star in another romantic comedy series!!

A long cameo in a Hong sisters drama can't be a bad thing towards that end, right? :-)

I used to hate her but that hate turn to love since Coffee House. She's awesome as Eun Young.

I miss her too and I second your 2nd par wholeheartedly!

The My Girl character made a lot of people hate her, I think, which is unfair since it was her role that was the bitch!

Eun Young was so awesome. She's among my favorite kdrama characters of all time, and so much of that is down to PSY's great acting.

YES YES YES!!! (nods very furiously)

I am still waiting for my JAE HEE to come back into acting in his new dramas -- for a looooooong time -- AFTER he already discharged from the military service, ofc.

Geez.......Where are you right now, Jae Hee? =( =(

Yes, but if she played the same character, she might get boo-ed off the tv. Second male leads - always a favorite. Sacond female leads - get the worst deal in dramaland.

Now I have to go back and watch My Girl all over again, just to catch Choon-Hyang and Moo-ryong. Not that I'm complaining, but I did have something I was supposed to do this weekend...

Totally agree on second female leads. Unless they're the heroine's loyal best friends, they're mean conniving bitches out to snatch the hero for themselves. *sigh*

Just watch Coffee House, i turned from a hater to a fan for Park Shi Yeon.

I dislike her from My Girl, but she makes me totally love her in Coffee House.

Been a fan for her and Kang Ji Hwan since Coffee House.

I hope she will get a new drama, become a lead with another strong, unique, and loveable character like Eun Young in Coffee House.

Just watched the first ep of Best Love this morning and it is was great. Cha Seung Won was especially hilarious and it was inundated with the Hong sisters' signature popculture references.

I JUST finished watching episode 1 and I just about died laughing!!! I LOVE this drama sooo much!!! I was also excited about Lie to Me, but there's no way it can be as amazing as Best Love. Best Love is seriously DAEBAK!!

Cha Seungwon's antics are hilarious!! He's perfect as a egotistic, macho man who's inwardly fearful of losing his popularity. He's so good at pretending to hate Gong Hyojin while secretly being intrigued by her. He's TOO cute!!! I love ALL of the cast members. Jung Junha is perfect as the bumbling, loyal, chubby brother/manager, and Yoo Inna is perfect as the it girl of the moment, showcasing charm to the public and bitchiness in private. Yoon Kyesang also looks soo hott!!! I want to see more of his humorous sides, because he's so good at comedy.

I love all the interesting, fresh ideas present in this drama, such as the unique way Cha Seungwon and Gong Hyojin meet and get entangled in a fake marriage on a TV show. I also liked the important role the internet and netizens play. The meta gun shooting hateful internet comments at Gong Hyojin in her day dream was really clever. The references to Peter Jason (Peter Jackson) and Ninja Assault (Ninja Assassin) were pretty funny as well. I lol'ed every time Cha Seungwon growled Peter Jason.

Best drama I've seen in a loonnnggg time~~~

OMG. I just finished episode 1 and I have to say that Hong sisters have gone far beyond what I expect of them since they really parody Korean entertainment industry. Gong and Cha are amazing for sure, but I am most surprised by the almost explicit social commentaries on Korean showbiz. They even literalize the netizens' assaults in a comical manner. Although directing and editing is a bit haphazard, I really enjoy watching the first episode.
I also hope that Hong sisters don't "rectify" these characters and subdue their edgy satire of the industry. The rating is not so high, but this is really a kind of exceptional drama. There are a lot of good dramas in May, but this will be a unique one, at least for now. Please give me more meta dramas !!
