You’ve Fallen For Me PD unlikely to resume directing

MBC’s You’ve Fallen For Me has had some behind-the-scenes change-ups recently, notably with its director switching to writer status, and it looks like that change — initially deemed merely short-term — is going to stick. PD Pyo Min-su hasn’t returned to the set since leaving it, and producers say that it’s not likely that he’ll be able to return to directing.

Pyo switched roles after Episode 4 of the drama had been shot, in an effort to tighten up what audiences called a scattered plot. He was originally only planning to stay in that position until a newly added scriptwriter got situated and the story stabilized. From audience reaction, it seems the tactic worked in improving the story, even if it didn’t revive the flagging ratings.

I wonder if this means the scriptwriters aren’t working out. Pyo’s role isn’t so strange to those of us familiar with American television production — he’s the showrunner (head honcho who oversees the writer’s room, with final say over creative choices and a hand in steering the direction, even if he doesn’t do the directing himself) — but it’s a situation unfamiliar in the K-drama system, and as a result there are a lot of confused and even over-dramatic media reports about the shaky status of this series.

Granted, You’ve Fallen For Me has been hit with a few setbacks, so I can see why people are nervous. On top of the writing issues, there was Park Shin-hye‘s car accident, which required some script adjustments so that she could continue to film without stressing her injury. But I wouldn’t go so far as to call this production beleaguered (that’s a little dramatic — it ain’t no Poseidon).

PD Pyo has kept his comments careful, stating that he may still return to the director’s chair, even if it’s unclear when he thinks that’ll be. Currently, the shooting is split between three teams, under the watch of two other directors.

Alas, ratings are not doing so hot; this week’s Episodes 8 and 9 netted a 6.5% and a 5.0%, respectively.

Me too. Love ettttt!
As a current college student, Heartstrings just hits all the right notes for me. The friendships, love and dreams seem so familiar, in a sense.
But alas, my college life is of course not as interesting as Kyu Won's, no popular-cute-guy-with-musical-talent crush! And i certainly dont run around school spending more time outside class drinking coffee, having no papers, deadlines, or exams -.-

Hmm... the plot *has* gotten tighter, so if Pyo staying with the screenwriters is the best thing, then let it be, I say. I'm sure he won't give up overseeing things.

But, as you said, the whole concept of Pyo's position in the production is fairly new to the Kdrama landscape, so it's not surprising that people are a bit confused.

"You've Fallen for Me" is by no means beleaguered, as you mentioned. If you want beleaguered, "Birdie Buddy" or "Poseidon" are good examples. At least they're not in *that* boat.

a change in Klala land is welcome...
I wish they would avoid live shootings (too many accidents)

I wish they would do some good action dramas, lawer or medical drama... but I want them to be good

I want to see actors as producers or PD... remember every soap opera from Canada or USA has the name of main actors in scriptwriters team, producing team or directing some episodes

I wish they would stop the buzz upon unnecessary things like
why an actress left in the middle of the drama (Crime Squad-that time the scriptwriter failed her role) or

why Son Ye Jin was all cutesy in Personal taste when her do and clothes were opposite the msg or

why the secondary leads in Miss Ripley weren't happy with roles ( I wouldn't be happy too)

the way an actor plays the piggyback ride scene - see Daniel Choi - the press about it was the ultimate turn off for me - ppl like me just enjoy the scene and they make all that drama about it,

Media was all frenzy about the acting in Playful kiss but nobody noticed the lack of arc in all that plot ... when so many ppl loved ....erm the actors

great comment.

but with shooting split into 3 teams and 2 directors, how is the show ever going to be coherent? thats the problem of live shooting.

Since when did live shooting become a system? Wasnt it a by product of late confirmations and bad planning? Its just terrible.

hmmm he focuses too much on her... indeed she is the best actress PD has on set... but I like the side chars too (ermm I don't like the secondary chars mopey and PD)

I loved episodes 8 and 9 so I can't get abysmal ratings... we like it or not Idol team is to die for, Windflower are lovely and 3 Angry girls are fun to watch

You've Fallen for Me should do better next with City Hunter ending. CH has been the the current k-crack for many people (not me). So far, I've been watching YFFM and find it soooo easy on the brain and the heart. It has this summery, relaxed vibe that prevails over its use of common kdrama cliches. I've also been watching Flames of Ambition (on episode 12) and find YFFM to be a fluffy oasis. YFFM FIGHTING!

WHyyyyyyyyyyyyy ? 1st drama to be real in romance why people are so hard to understend it ?? I am sorry but I love every episode even 5 and 6 I tell to who bored you having many drama to watch and who interesting like me just live every moment in this amazing drama .

you're right, even ep 5 or 6 were good to me...i could feel Lee Shin's love. Not because of the acting, but because of the story, many students love their teacher sometimes, and they are so young that they get confused by their actions...and in the case of LKW, well she was his friend but also fell for him, it's not unusual to fall for a guy and chase him, be worried about him and follow his acts, everytime, and everywhere . That happens when you're young...

To sum up i have liked this drama from the beginning up to now, but the pd should stay in the writing team, he's doing a hell of a good job!!!

I really like how the drama is going right now. After episode 8, I decided I'm going to be in it for the long haul. I lovedd episodes 8 & 9! I'm pretty emotionally invested in the characters now, even mopey ballerina isn't so bad anymore. And the adjustments they had to make because of PSH's accident weren't too bad and it actually made the plot move along a little bit.

I agree with some of the comments, if the best thing for the drama is for the PD to be on the screenwriter team, then it should stay that way.

I hope that now that City Hunter is over, the ratings will rise a little bit.

It's strange how they commit to a writer without seeing like 5 or 6 episodes - especially one without a proven track record. That's what happened in Lie To Me and to a lesser extent here.

yes..why do they work like that in korea entertainment..why would they start a drama if the script is not yet finished.i really don't understand.they should have at least prepared a script for 8 episodes or so before starting a drama.and i don't get it that they start pre-production at least a month or so before the actual airing and then after 2 episodes or so,they are already in the live-shoot system and scrambling for new episodes.don't they have at least 4 episodes in the can before the actual broadcast date

Que sera sera....what will be will be.. I love Yong Hwa and Shin Hye and their characters here...minus the mopey ballerina. Whatever the production decides I hope they can produce a beautiful and memorable love story (first loves). I love this drama and IN to the end so whatever they do I am a fangirl and will forever be for Heartstrings.. Why aren't they showing more of Ki Young-- I think he is the character that will bring Shin to his senses...Anyway, good luck to the new writers directors. Must be a hard job to try to do your own thing and to listen to all the comments constructive or otherwise.

We all find our individual strengths in different areas - it's rather fortuitous that this PD has found his in the writer's chair rather than the PD chair - and isn't he the PD that referred to himself as being known as "low ratings PD"?

It's patently apparent that the writing has improved considerably since he started working closely with the screenwriting team. Let's hope he's found his niche.

Just watched ep 9 (had to wait for the eng. subs).
It's official. I've gone from LIKING this drama to LOVING this drama.

If this is concrete evidence of the PD being the catalyst for such improved writing, I say chain him to the chair and lock the door to the Writer's Room. Don't let him out until ALL the episodes are written.

How strange. I found Episodes 4 and 5 to be insufferable but Episode 7 really turned it around. I am absolutely addicted to this show now that I was practically inhaling Episodes 8 and 9. To find out it was so beleaguered behind the scenes and wallowing in single-digit ratings Siberia feels really strange. Like putting a peephole through the fourth dimension.

I really, really like it now since Shin stopped pursuing the professor & liking GW instead. I love their instrumental fusion on Carmen's Habanera. Jung Yong hwa looks so adorable specially when he's playing his guitar...& when he sings too! He & PSH look good together.

I have watch every episodes almost 4 times each.1st time on MBC broadcast, 2nd time without subs, 3rd & 4th time with english subs. I don't even get bored. I don't understand why this drama needs to be compared to other drama of different genre. This drama consist of love-dovey scenes which happens a lot in everyday life. In fact this drama is very relaxing & cute.. The actors & actresses act very well. Overall, I feel this drama is worth watching every bit. International fans such as me, love this drama a lot.

Why are the ratings so low?!?!
The drama is actually good. It started off slow, but it's getting a lot better. I find myself squealing and laughing along. I love CN Blue and this drama makes me like Yonghwa a lot more.
I LOVED episodes 8 and 9. I love lover boy Shin~ Keep doing what you're doing, writer. As long as the storyline doesn't suffer, I'm more than okay with the change.

I love the drama so far. The plot is getting better. To me the story feels real, the characters are real - I can easily relate myself to it, remembering my college years and my love affair on campus then. Park Shin-Hye and Yong Hwa have been doing an excellent job thus far. I am not aware that the drama is under the direction of three different teams though (alas!). Hope that with one scriptwriter stable till the end, we can enjoy it as well as we have or even more.

i've actually liked how he tightened the "storytelling"-- meaning to say, he hasn't stuck with a lot of story-telling at all (which, imo, is better than the scraggly start it had, where it was trying to tell 5 stories at once.) i don't know if he managed to integrate them all, somehow, but i can see how some storiues have taken a back seat, some stories are going on slow boil, setting up conflict at a steady pace, and some are going full speed ahead, like the love angle. i think heartstrings should stick to this, and i feel PD pyo min su has done it some good by doing it.. it's not inserting *gravitas* that it wouldn't really fit in, so i'mglad it's not being all pretentious.

PD pyo, fighting! also... KISS SCENE, PLEASE :D

Well, it shouldn't actually be much of a big deal especially now that You've Fallen For Me is actually starting to have a good foundation and viewers are finally getting much more enthusiastic about the drama.

Regarding the ratings, well, of course it should be expected. City Hunter just had its finale. THE Finale so it's not much of a surprise. And also, though this drama may not be much appreciated in its own land, I bet it will gain much love from other countries that are planning to show it in their own respective local channels. :)

To me, YFFM started very slow. If its not of the Lee Hyun Jin's song, If l leave, l am really leaving YFFM. Its just that l hope YFFM to have more interesting plot rather than ordinary campus life love story which to me quite boring. No wonder the rating is low.

However, since l love Park Shin Hye, l still watch it, moreover, it is better than Hayate, the combat butler (l prefer korean than taiwanese).

l hope that the new crew to starts something more plotting and interesting, may be Lee Shin jealous of Gi Young, or may be Gi Young also falls for Hyu Won.Since now, CH has gone, YFFM should do better.

Please, and please, l need more interesting story not just easy without heartbreak like CH. Or try to compare with other musical drama i.e You're Beautiful, it had high rating.
