Book giveaway: P.S. I Still Love You by Jenny Han

We’re back with another book giveaway!

Perhaps you’ll recall that we did a giveaway last year for the young adult novel To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han, which we were happy to do because the book was sweet, funny, and thoughtfully written, from the perspective of a Korean-American teenager falling in love and navigating her first romance. Jenny is herself quite the drama fan, and I thought To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before even read like a drama plot transferred to novel form (I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t picturing certain K-drama actors in the roles).

The fabulous Ms. Han has written the sequel to To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, P.S. I Still Love You, which released just today — and since the last giveaway went so well, she’s giving us 5 copies to give away to Dramabeans readers.

Girlfriday and I have read the book, and it’s difficult to talk about the plot without giving away spoilers for the first one (which we don’t want to spoil since you should really just go read it!) — but suffice to say that heroine and middle sister Lara Jean still has her sisterly bonding moments, her fair share of embarrassing teenage-girl foibles, and a love triangle to twist you up, but in a good way (since both boys are such great characters).

TO ENTER THE GIVEAWAY:

Leave a comment below, sharing your favorite K-drama set in high school. (Jenny names Answer Me 1997 as hers. I did love that one, but if I had to pick something else as my most addictive, I might have to go with Boys Before Flowers. I know! But it was cracktastic evil magic, okay? Girlfriday says both recent seasons of School, though she reserves the right to rescind School 2015 if Eun-bi picks the wrong boy. You know which one we mean!)

Be sure to leave a valid email address, since that’s how we’ll get in touch with winners.

This giveaway is unfortunately limited to U.S. entrants; apologies to all of you outside of the States.

Deadline: Thursday, May 28, at midnight PST. We’ll announce winners shortly thereafter.

If you’d like to buy the book instead, it’s now available from Simon and Schuster, Amazon, and other retailers.

What makes a great high school experience isn’t just the time spent in high school but also the time spent outside of—what we do in our free time, who we truly are as a person, and how our high school experience transfers in the real world. High School King of Savvy captures all of this and more, without even having to take place in high school for the most part.

Right from the premise, HSKS captures what it means to be a high school student, what it means to be in high school. As a graduating high school student, I am expected, like many others, to choose a major and a career path to follow. Despite how many graduating college students and adults have shared that there will be opportunities to switch majors, the transition between high school and college doesn’t feel like there’s time at all. Rather, it feels like there’s hardly enough time and everything must be done now. Min Suk struggling to take up on his double identity feels like transitioning from high school to college. He’s just thrown into the corporate world without proper warning and bumbling his way around, much like how I will soon be thrown into the independent, adult nature of college. His gradual grasp in handling both his world brings faith in me that despite the current confusion, I will like Min Suk find my way and hopefully in the similar playful manner as Min Suk conducts himself in whenever he presents a PT.

The theme is continued in HSKS’s OST as well. It ranges from Honey G’s ‘Fluttering Heart’ which captures the contemplative moments in teenage life to Trans Fixion’s ‘One Way’ which captures the gritty teenage angst. High schoolers don’t see things in rainbow and sunshine—that’s middle school. High schoolers tend to take the world as their adversary and believe whatever they do now will matter a whole lot. The sepia, dark scenes illuminates this: the serious lens we teens wear and the fact that high schoolers take what is happening in the present way more seriously than they should.

HSKS may have been fluttering from extremes, reality to fantasy, but this is how the teenage mind works. We have lofty dreams such as becoming a highly acclaimed chemical engineer, only to become insecure of a failing test grade. While HSKS didn’t address these specific issues, it has portrayed Min Suk’s headfirst attitude in approaching a problem to his momentary downfall, when his world is completely crushed because of his dreams. But because of HSKS’s accurate portrayal of how high school feels like and my ability to relate, I consider High School King of Savvy as my favorite K-drama set in high school.

My favorite drama set in a high school would probably be Seonam Girls High School Investigators. I'll be real, I've always wanted to be a female detective and have my own squad, but hey here I am almost graduating. I really liked the whole idea of the drama itself and man, I really wish I did more interesting things during high shool lol.
However, a close second goes to Answer Me 1997. It's like one of those dramas that I can just re-watch without getting bored. Plus I love Eunji T_T

can I say a three way tie between School 2013, Angry Mom, and Answer Me 1997?

Because it's freshest in my memory, though, I still feel emotionally attached to Angry Mom. I'll go with that. Bokdongie ♡♡♡

Goong is the epitome of an addicting high school Korean drama. All the typical cuteness from the relatable female character and two handsome princes. How do you beat that? Lol...Reply 1997 is a close 2nd. Thanks for the giveaway. :)

Definitely Answer Me 1997! I am actually a big fan of BOF, I'm pretty sure I've watched the series 3 times over, but it's so ridiculous and OTT, it's not really my favorite haha. Answer Me on the other hand, I freaking adored so much. I loved the group of friends so much, and it was basically a perfect drama to me haha.

School 2015 because the story is intriguing with the romance and friendship well as the students are believable high school students. The 3 leads are selling their chemistry so well and very rarely I like both the male leads but I definitely have a preference. The OST is good too. Second would be the Japan version of BoF 1 and 2. The OTP took me by surprise, as well as the plot and story too. The humor worked so much better there and OST in 1 was awesome!

Perhaps it's because it's freshest in my mind, but Angry Mom might just take the cake for my favourite school drama. Not only were the actors wonderfully cast (I've been following Kim Yoojung for forever, so her casting may or may not have heavily influenced my decision to watch) and portrayed, the drama really just stole my heart. I'm not going to spoil the drama so I won't go into any details, but I've always been a fan of parent-child relationship-type dramas since they're just. So. Heartwarming. And. Heartwrenching. Angry Mom really emphasized the power of mothers (it reminded me of the J-drama Mother), and I was rooting for our mother-daughter team all the way. The undercover-mom-but-still-mom-so-let-me-baby-you-and-give-you-attention (even for characters who were not actually moms) aspect was also very touching, and I loved all dimensions of Kangja's school relationships. Lots of people complained about the OST, but, aside from a few moments, I found it to be wonderfully fitting and ironic(?) most of the time ("Teleport Me" turned out to be a surprising favourite). Likewise, the hilarious and jarringly somber moments were so mixed up that I wasn't sure what genre would adequately describe the drama: something I felt the OST helped to further immensely juxtapose. Angry Mom hit on a lot of real issues in a convincing way, and its ending was bitter-sweetly hopeful: just the way I liked it. And hellooo, it ended with some pun-like phrase referring to Kangja's name so... how can you not appreciate puns. It's my kyrpunite. Anyways, moms are amazing.

Definitely Hello, My Teacher!!

I've watched it three times! I personally really like all of Gong Hyo Jin's dramas. It also helps that a lot of her shows are cutesy rom-coms which are definitely my cup of tea.

Plus, Gong Yoo's portrayal of the lost high school boy getting his life together really got me in the drama. I'm always going to be his fan!

It's undoubtably a favorite to many, and yet even though I too pick Answer Me 1997 as my utmost favorite K-drama set in high school that it's probably not for the same reasons. The best thing about this show in particular is the fact it carries over a few milestones in one's lifetime and didn't only stop all the storytelling once high school was over like Boys Over Flowers, Dream High 1 & 2, or School 2013 & 2015. I admire the sequence of events on how the story was outlined; there's the childhood flashbacks, high school, college, lastly adulthood in career-marriage. Plus, there's the mystery solving who is actual the heroine's husband. The layout was done well, so original for its time, shame how Answer Me 1994 wasn't as successful as its predecessor.

I would say that my fave high school korean drama is dream high 1. It brought me to another world which was 2pm and 2pm led me to variety shows and now I am super addicted to korean culture, I just can't seem to get out of it. I really loved the milky couple and the drama was really good, I wished I was talented as them.
