The rise and fall of Cheese in the Trap

By now, you’ve probably already heard plenty about the brouhaha surrounding Cheese in the Trap, which we haven’t commented on too much here—mostly because the controversy started off at a relatively low rumble with claims that were, for the large part, difficult to substantiate or confirm.

But I’ve been keeping an eye on the developing headlines, and somewhere in the past couple days, it feels like the controversy reached a tipping point and is now gaining momentum and intensity, rather than dying down. I’d wanted to wait for more official statements and facts to come out before talking about it, and now that we’ve had multiple statements from key parties, including Park Hae-jin, it seems a good time to weigh in.

Reading the Cheese recap comments, it seems like most fans are already aware of the issues so I won’t go into comprehensive detail, but to give the general overview: Fans have always been critical of Cheese deviating from its original material, but for the most part, after the show premiered to praise and massive ratings, those comments calmed down for a while. However, about halfway through the show, the complaints began growing again, coupled with the increasing disgruntlement over the drama’s curious shortening of star Park Hae-jin’s screentime (playing Yoo Jung, but you know this already), which has coincided with the drastic increase in screentime for his co-star Seo Kang-joon (Baek In-ho).

We’d all noticed this, I’m sure, but it feels like things really blew up this week after Episodes 13 and 14 aired, and our lead actor was hardly in them.

A lot of conspiracy theories are floating around for why this might happen, but I have to admit at first I disregarded them as overreaching by upset fans. After all, I don’t see any problem with a drama deviating from source material to be its own thing, and viewers can’t expect or demand that a show re-create a webtoon perfectly. That said, the longer this controversy stretched, the more confused I got, and now I have to join the chorus of puzzled viewers wondering if there isn’t something to the rumors—I’m not one for conspiracy theories, but this whole situation is so bizarre that there aren’t many explanations otherwise.

I don’t actually find the main plot points of the drama to be too problematic on paper—for instance, In-ho struggling to reclaim his life, Jung and Seol arguing and making up—but it’s a case where the balance is all wrong. By skewing the focus so drastically, the show has altered the effect of the story in a way that now feels unnatural to its intent.

It came out that there were significant edits made to the shot footage, which was markedly different from the footage that was aired, which happened to favor a focus on Seo Kang-joon over Park Hae-jin. My jaw dropped to read reports that Park Hae-jin hadn’t been invited to the show’s own wrap party or reward vacation. (He clarifies this in the interview below.) There are rumors that Park Hae-jin finished shoots on the show a full five days in advance of Kim Go-eun or Seo Kang-joon, which is mind-boggling.

On a related note, I do also have to issue a mea culpa of sorts for Episode 13, because at the time I wrote the recap, I wasn’t aware of the full behind-the-scenes controversy, and therefore merely thought that while it was curious that Park Hae-jin was getting so little to do, I was sure—so totally confident—that the drama was just on a minor detour that there was no way he was going to be shafted in the long run. Because of course that’s how it should be! Who writes a drama and cuts out the hero at the end?

The story of Cheese in the Trap was so clearly about Seol and Jung, with In-ho playing a supporting role, and so I presumed In-ho would get his big moment and then fade away, like Copycat Min-soo and Stalker Young-gon. I had too much faith in the show to consider that anything else might happen, but after reading through the massive flood of new articles currently floating around in the internet ether, I’m concerned that I was too optimistic, and that the show might not right its course.

On February 24, webtoon writer Soonkki wrote publicly on her blog about the production not consulting her about the plot after Episode 6. She stated that the show contacted her later about the last two episodes, then disregarded her requests not to write a certain ending, lest it overlap too much with her own plans for the webtoon’s ending, which is yet to come. She wrote, “Considering that the medium is different, I’d wanted the drama to have a different feel from the original. However, it was reported that the drama was ‘faithful to the original.’ While the drama was being produced to be faithful to the original, I did not receive even one call, and I don’t know what plot will be produced.”

And that brings us to today, with new interviews with Park Hae-jin asking him for his thoughts on the matter. He is diplomatic but somewhat forthcoming, enough that we can read between the lines. I always find Korean stars to be so excessively polite and image-conscious that they hardly say anything in interviews, and therefore you know things must be really bad for them to say anything negative about their projects or the people they’ve worked with. (Mostly, it’s starting to look like PD Lee Yoon-jung must be nuts, and Park Hae-jin is a class act. PD Lee is getting a firestorm of flak right now, with Park Hae-jin being inundated with public sympathy. As this is also my sentiment, I have no problems with the current tide of public opinion.)

At the time that the drama’s reward vacation plans were announced, Park was asked about it and replied that he’d never heard anything about it. This time he clarified, “This is something I think I have to explain clearly. Because of my schedule, I told them in advance that I wouldn’t be able to go, and I think that’s why they didn’t contact me. Later I heard about the reward vacation’s time and location through the news. As I said, I didn’t know anything about it… The next day at an event, I was told, ‘I tried to tell you the plans, but the news came out first.’ If I’d heard [the talk] that I didn’t go because I was hurt over the drama, I think I would have just gone. It’s a situation that got misrepresented through misunderstanding.”

Park was asked about certain complaints about the drama character not living up to the webtoon character, and it sounds like Park himself wasn’t happy with the characterization.

Park Hae-jin: “It’s possible the drama viewers would think that. In my family, my noona and I have read the webtoon, while my brother-in-law and mother haven’t. Those who haven’t read it ask me, ‘Why is Yoo Jung doing that?’ and I explain it to them. There’s no need to take the webtoon directly as is, but in the drama there’s a connecting flow and you need to create plausibility. There’s a slight disconnected feeling, and in some parts it could be like ‘fishing’ [bait-and-switching] to viewers. From the viewer’s standpoint, you need to be able to sympathize and relate.”

He added, “If the plot interferes with plausibility or is unable to be understood, you can’t watch the drama. There are parts I’m disappointed about. There are parts where the feeling between what we shot and what aired is different.”

He said, “There are things I’m disappointed with regarding the screentime and editing. But even being the lead character, depending on the episode your emphasis could be greater or lesser. Truthfully, I don’t think the real problem is the screentime or editing. The biggest issue is that my character, Yoo Jung, has changed. He carries hidden scars that he can’t show to others. He smiles to cover that up, and shows a bright face. There are certain scenes that are necessary to show the characters’ internal and external sides. But in the drama, they were different from the original. I was disappointed in this point. I chose Cheese in the Trap because of Yoo Jung’s duality, with his sweet and chilling sides.”

“Past the first half of the series, this side of Yoo Jung wasn’t revealed much. Thus the character’s very essence was weakened, and changed. More than the shortening of my screentime because of the editing, I’m just so disappointed in the character faltering.”

“I really wanted to take on the role of Yoo Jung, but I’m disappointed that I wasn’t able to show something more. And I’m also sorry to writer Soonkki of the original.”

A source from his management’s side said, “When he agreed to take the role, he only had one condition. That they not shatter the original. He only wanted for the characters’ personalities and situations to be explained adequately. Now only Episodes 15 and 16 remain. Park Hae-jin’s part is small, but he put forth his best effort. He mentioned that he’d be a ‘scene stealer.'” Also: “From Episode 10 onward, we asked the producers constantly to explain. But all they said was that they were in talks with Soonkki.”

What about the ending? Park said, “I don’t know how the ending will be. There are a lot of instances where we filmed things that didn’t air, so even I will have to watch the broadcast to know. But since it’s a drama I appeared in, I hope it will wrap up well.”

“Because filming has already wrapped, I can only wait to see how the director edited things. It’s upsetting. I worked hard as the actor in the lead, but I’m sad I couldn’t show more.”

One source with the drama said, “The original [story] has completely crumbled. Episodes 15 and 16 contain events that are incomprehensible.”

Park seems to be unhappy with PD Lee Yoon-jung’s direction, though he seemed careful not to badmouth her. Regarding the constant changes to the script, he said, “There were a lot of revisions made on set, to the extent that a script being complete became meaningless. I heard that’s her style.”

He described how PD Lee didn’t seem that concerned with sticking to the original material, and would sometimes ask why it was a problem. His interviewer asked if the new parts—the scenes the drama created that weren’t in the original—were the problem. He replied, “[The drama] didn’t capture the parts that are in the webtoon well, either. I’d like to ask the director once, why she did that. I don’t know what is still to come, but I’d still like to ask that.”

“When I watched the broadcast, Yoo Jung didn’t appear very much. I’d like to ask [the director] why. It’s not only the scenes I filmed, but there were child parts that were entirely skipped, and the emotional lines between Yoo Jung and his father, and parts where we could have explained more and still been insufficient, but got removed. There were things that didn’t get filmed, but even things we filmed were edited out. So I’d like to ask that myself, what the reason was.”

Park’s management company, WM Company, stated, “The viewers’ reactions are already known, and we’re extremely disappointed about the screentime issue. We just don’t understand why things that were already filmed were cut out. There are major scenes for Yoo Jung that were shot that weren’t included. [He/we] expressed extreme opposition to the current plot, but [they] did not accept any of it.”

He was asked if he’s satisfied about what’s aired. He replied, “To be honest, it would be a lie to say I’m 100% satisfied. The reason I confirmed Cheese in the Trap at the very start when the director, writer, or anything else hadn’t been decided was the because of the strength of the original, and my trust in the webtoon. Right now, I have nothing to trust in.”

Even so, a source with WM Company and the production staff did give an interview on the 26th stating that rumors of discord between Park Hae-jin and PD Lee were completely groundless and “pointless rumors.”

Meanwhile, through this all, PD Lee Yoon-jung has remained quite tight-lipped, only saying in one phone interview, “You’ll have to talk to the drama’s team leader, not me.” Also, “I can’t really talk about it, so I don’t plan to give an interview.”

She told one reporter, “I’ll talk about it later, in other circumstances. That means I’ll tell you if we meet on personal terms.” That is to say, off the record.

Park did express gratitude for the response to his role: “I’m thankful for receiving love beyond my expectations. I don’t know if I was able to bear the weight of the webtoon. Rather than bearing it, there were parts that were incomplete. I did my best with the situation I was given. I’ll work hard on what was lacking to show a better side in the future. I’ll return having grown more.”

“I think I’ve changed a little through doing this drama, about doing my best to protect the character. I had thought that an actor just has to do a good job on set, and get along with the other actors and staff without trouble. But it doesn’t seem that’s all there is to it.”

Just please don't tell me I'm gonna be Jung-hwan-ed again. Because really CITT has been a balm to my AM88 disappointment. And I don't get why they would go to Inho when CITT is about Jung and Seol.

I did notice that Yoo-jung's screentime had decreased in the past few episodes. I really didn't mind because I had faith (hope?) that they would focus back to the Jung-Seol storyline in the end. I also didn't hear/read any behind the scenes controversy regarding the PD's decisions. I'm really sad if all this is true.

As I've read the webtoon as well up to the current translated ones, I know there are stuff about Yoo-jung that they didn't show (with me thinking there wasn't enough time to add those in). But now they're saying they shot scenes about that and the production chose not to include it in the aired episodes? What the what? Why PD, why?

This is the one time I would encourage the CITT fans to cry loud so that they could change stuff last minute before they ruin my favorite 2016 drama. I just can't take another Jung-hwan. I. Just. Can't.

I want my Jung and Seol to live happily ever after making intelligent and scary babies to rule the world. Is that so hard to do? Please, don't break the OTP.

Overall I'm still in the opinion it's still not consider a mess in terms of overall plot.... Despite Jung's limit screen, The drama is still coherent for me.... It's just a pity because they can explore him so much more. Abit bored with In Ho's scene.... But ep 1-9 is a gem...

OH MY...
this is a real mess!

im reading the webtoon, im a dan of it.
i watch the drama with open mind, be ready for some not-original-plot-regarding-th-webtoon, and i kinda like the show...
but this part crushes me so hard, and the question is, why they (the drama team-producer, director, editor, and all) making Yoo Jung worths nothing in screen.
In Ho characterization is allright, with whole conflict and solutions, but why cant they make it better for Yoo Jung? For Viewer Shake! He is the male lead! *crying*

Why can't they just postponed the ending, make it into 20 episodes for example..?

This is me hurt, to know something like this happen to PHJ with all his skill to bring the character alive, *sob*

After have a very shocking moment with In Ho in screen life, now im having shocking moment with Yoo Jung in real life... Now i really lost my appetite to watch the last 2 episode. Poor me, lady...

I know its not SKJ's fault but seeing his mug everywhere irritates me so much. I know its not fair but I just hate the In Ho character so much I just associate it with him. Sorry SKJ! I just need to not see your face for awhile and I'm sure it will pass.

I'm so disappointed with the production team. Viewers got cheated out of an interesting character exposition. I think I'm just going to re-watch Misaeng again to wash out bad taste of CITT. Good luck to PHJ I hope he gets an amazing project after this.

That is the terrible effect when a character like drama In Ho's screen times extends way beyond the point of good storytelling. His scenes are like...overexposure for me now and I hate it because I have nothing against SKJ and he's a cutie.

Sorry to say this but it wasn't like he was around much in the webtoon. And BIH was not just a secondary character. The writer have him equal importance in character development as YJ so I'm so tired of the bias opinions of pl saying he is the main character. He and HS are in a really toxic relation where they don't really communicate to each other. And to be honest, it's really a stretch to think the YJ will change his ways esp when he hasn't been showing any signs of change.

That's the difference between the webtoon and the drama though. In the webtoon he shows change and opens up more despite the lack of screentime in S3 and S4. Something that the drama has left out.

You missed the whole point.

They DID shoot scenes of Jung. So there obviously was a story to tell despite that he wasn't around.

But it all got edited out.

The agency actually says that they deleted PHJ scenes and made SKG shoot/ reshoot more

this whole mess has nothing to do with actual storytelling

....except that (and this is not being mentioned enough, where it should be) even Seol herself has been sidelined these last few episodes, to serve as In-ho's crush object and have him inserted in virtually all her storylines, all while he spends yet more time playing the piano and angsting.

There is entirely too much Baek In-ho in the drama for several episodes now, and it's hurting the narrative flow of the drama as well as the development of its heroine and main character - who is named Hong Seol, NOT Baek In-ho.

Um...this time in the webtoon, there is a considerable amount of change in Jung imo, and he's also in the scenes they gave (re-filmed I now wonder?) to In Ho in drama.

But either way, you missed the point.

As someone who didn't read the webtoon but was still on Jung's side, that's sad to hear. No wonder so many other people saw Jung as a psycho, particularly those who couldn't see into him.

My problem isn't even that they cut his scenes, apparently they cut some scenes and then had SKJ refilm them. Didn't any of the actors think that this was weird? It sucks because PHJ was praising them saying how this was the best set he ever worked on, lmao, he didn't even know that this was coming. If they intended to use this to promote SKJ in China, they definitely failed as people are now bashing him on weibo which I think is totally unfair to the actor.
Oh well, I dropped this drama in episode11. I'm just going to read the recap after the episode airs.

I was not aware about this issue. Yes, I had notice PHJ not being in a lot of the episodes, but believed that was part of the story. I haven't read the webtoon. What annoys me is that people have been saying they don't understand Jung as a character and that Seol shouldn't be with him. This might have not been if we got more scenes of Jung/PHJ. And it is quite sad that PHJ's scene were cut down, not only in relation to Jung's character development, but also to the story.

This isn't about shipping wars or 'his scenes/acting are boring', but that we, as an audience, won't be able to see the 'TRUE' Cheese in the Trap. As an audience we weren't given a bunch of scenes and dialogue in order to fully understand and love the drama. Nor are we able to fully critique or be opinionated about the drama when so much has been cut out, not only PHJ's scenes but also the child actors scene. It is good that SKJ has gotten the opportunity to shine, and he has done a great job which no one should take away from him.

It's just sad that PHJ wasn't able to show all of himself due to editing and cutting. Now knowing this, I'm scared about the ending.

I get that things do change when adapting something. We can't always get something like Holes near perfection adaptation, but when the writer themself and your main actor that somehow disappeared have to speak out? You're not doing something right.

I will say that I do love Inho and how much he's changed over the episodes but this is Seol's story not Seol and Inho. If they wanted to do a drama with Inho as the main, that would be great.

Oh initially, even i did not care much over the "screen space" issue. I just thought it was a passing discontent which is normal in fandoms, and ignored not thinking much to it. Yes, i was annoyed with the sudden burst of the piano boy, but i thought it was unfair to impose my bias on to the story. No matter however random, sudden, funny with no meat what so ever and imposing this whole "triangle" is, i just let it pass

But woa, isn't this a bit of a stretch, where the shot MEANINGFUL scenes which actually contribute to the plot are brutally not included just for the sake of including a stale poor-puppy-unrequited-love triangle. Oh i am all props for unrequited love to, but not the way it was handles in the this show (turning red face and heartbeats. Seriously now?) And by this, all you know, they are doing a hell lotta disservice to Seo Kang Joon's character as well

Well what more, the original webtoon creator herself is disappointed with the turn of events. So you all can have second thoughts when the actors says something based on a bias, but how do you ignore the Soonki's claims.

And it's not even about a certain character getting more time, i am all ok if he does WITHOUT impacting the plot. But the scenes that were left out are important. Especially if you see the flak Yoo Jung as a character get, it was important to delve more into his psyche, past and background to get a better understanding of his characters. His character and the consequences of his action is the crux of the story not some brooding piano boy's one sided love. for that matter there are way too many characters who could have had a better developement to name a few like Eun Tak and Bo Ra relationship.

And in all this it's super weird to see the Director wash her hands of all this controversy, not explaining once what is going on. Ok maybe her hands are tied, but about production house? Do they want the reputation of the show to nose dive especially when the last episodes are going to air. Classic mismanagement and confusion by both creatives of the show and the production

You're exactly right - it can't impact the plot. I'm more made that they wasted precious time on boring scenes that don't further the plot or even In Ho as a character. Knowing they cut out childhood scenes, reshot takes of Jung's scenes played by In Ho and flat out didn't film scenes from the scripts is just nonsense and because what they produced didn't further the story at all it makes me resent In Ho on the screen. He's a character that was electric and exciting in the beginning before he overtook the plot.

For me one of the weirdest things about the In Ho as POV character is that even though he's taken primacy, he still has no chance with Seol. Like, she's so not into him, I just don't understand why we're spending so much time with his unrequited love. There's not a hint that it'll ever be reciprocated. In fact it's clear he's 'going to get over it' while forcing his presence on her. So why? I just don't understand what's happening anymore.

I was always confused aboout the scenes that would appear in the next episode preview at the end of every episode. There were some scenes between Yoo jung and Baek In Ha but they never aired and scenes meant for Yoo Jung were passed on to Baek In Ho.... I wonder is the director or the CITT team is upset with the amount of appreciation Park Hae Jin is garnering for his role. Not to say rest of the cast is just as awesome but he bring such complexities to the character of Yoo Jung...
I hope he is given some ore airtime now in the final 2 episodes.

I've been reading all the various news and reaction on this since it broke and feels worse for every new news.
However it doesnt seems that it will slow down right now which is how we gonna watch CITT next week without thinking about this at the back of our head really?

The fact they continue trying to cast him as Yoojung, him continue turning it down and when he finally agreed, this is the treatment they give him?
Can they at least give him some respect like what they give to other actors? Watching the bts, it doesnt seems that there is any visible discord btwn him & the production teams, so I just dont understand.
It must be disheartening to tune in and found out that all the scenes he filmed, pour his effort into is no where to be seen. Cutting his scenes is one thing, but asking SKJ to re-act that scenes was even colder. If they didnt want that scene, just replace it with other scene but it seems that they didnt want Yoojung, not the scenes. Damn, that is just cold.

And the fact that change effect the flow of the drama even makes things worse. Even if they decide to deviate from webtoon, by all means make it believable and start your story as early as possible so that it can integrate to the original story from the webtoon. Webtoon fans may complain but at least viewers (aka me) wont feel like we (aka me) watching an entirely different drama.

So, I had great expectations for the drama version. However from the first episode itself I felt that the show lacked something...but still it was a good show and I had to remind myself that squeezing 5 years worth of material into 16 epi's is not possible...but then they did not include few 'key' scenes that were important for us to understand yoo jung's behavior , this is when I lost my faith in drama a little.. Also the regarding the absence of Jung , I would like say that it happened in the original too , but there it was portrayed in a way that made him more mysterious and when he did come back everyone were squeeing with happiness because they missed him so much....that is to say the focus was still very much on him and seol Instead of him becoming a side character who had no more use in the story.

Must be frustrating for Park Hae-jin and the webtoon author. I felt as though 16 episodes weren't going to be enough to wrap up the story neatly. Poor time management and not a clear goal as to what the focus of the story should be.

Looking forward to the final episodes.

The issue in this drama NOT only on shipwar.
It is more than that.. I just hope... Park Hae Jin will take a break after this and come back with a good project.
This drama had so much potential before until this happened. Not sure why this happened, but I have a strong gut that there are some issues, but issues that PHJ pissed off the PDs is not concrete. I Think it has something to do with the management level. That is my opinion.

I feel sorry for SKJ too, but i am not sure if his agency has something to do with this too. I hope not. If his agency has something to do with this, we should not blame SKJ on it.
It is better for SKJ take some break after this before accepting a new drama.

And for the last time: THIS IS NOT ABOUT SHIPPING.

So please, anyone who's here to sling insults at fans with legitimate complaints about the way the story was changed, or dismiss them out of hand, cool your jets.

As a Seol/Kim Go-eun fan, I'm also furious that the "detour" and "character development" for In-ho, have come at the expense of the heroine and main character of this story, who suddenly doesn't get to have a storyline anymore unless In-ho can be shoved into it somehow.

(there was no reason at all for him to show up and punch Sang-chul last ep, by that point the amount he'd taken over her screen time and storylines was making me twitch too)

I like the In ho character better than the creepy Jung character. Sure Jung was interesting because he was sneaky but as a romantic lead I thought he was seriously creepy. However, none of it makes me "furious".

0

"None of it makes me 'furious'"

Says the person who is lowkey trying to justify real people getting treated with serious unprofessionalism... but you don't like their acting and character so it's OK?

Maybe others are too nice to say it in such words but we see right through you .

0

@TJ - Your investment in the story and characters belies your claim that none of it makes you 'furious', so you've really haven't got a leg to stand on when it comes to judging my reactions.

Now, the main lead does not even have a backstory, where you the basher of Jung's character in each episode, even have us know why you hate his character so much.

Btw, he is fictional character, your baby sister is your baby sister

Like I might have said in my previous posts. A Jung childhood backstory meant nothing to me at that point. For me there is no childhood bad enough to turn a hero into someone as sneaky and entitled as that character had become as an adult. Just my opinion really. Sure the drama gave no indication that he was going to change into something I'd find acceptable as a love interest. In the last episode he went way beyond what was necessary in his efforts to teach one of his classmates one of his famous "lessons". I've never liked the idea that he was justified in meddling in business that for the most part had very little to do with him. From what I hear in the webtoon he does stop trying to play vigilante but that's not how the drama was going.

Lol you have a problem with sneaky and entitled Jung but violent, impulse-control-lacking and entitled (give me one more month of acting like my friend even though you are super uncomfortable now that you know that I like you) In Ho is ok?

What business was it of In Ho's to go and punch Sang Chul sunbae, then?

0

I’m actually of the belief that Sang Chul desperately needed that “lesson”. In fact, he does not “deserve” it, in that, nobody should even be bothered “teaching” him this, considering his age and status (senior repeating a year). He should be the person everybody else should be looking up to. He should be the most mature person out of the cast of characters—but on the contrary, he is the most juvenile.

You could view Jung however you want to view him, but don’t use an abhorrent excuse such as him teaching Sang Chul a lesson he should have known for a long time already to undermine his actions. Was Jung harsh? Yes. Was it long overdue for Sang Chul? Absolutely.

This time (and for many other instances too), Jung does have the moral upperhand over Sang Chul. Because he IS hardworking, diligent, and never took other people’s work for granted, nor bullied and felt entitled for things that does not belong to him. You can criticize his methods but you have absolutely no leg to stand on to justify that SOMEBODY else could have done better than Jung.

No amount of talking will change him, the only way for Sang Chul to change will be through PAIN and LOST. It’s true for many people whose personalities have been ingrained in them. That INCLUDES Jung too. The only way he’ll ever reconsider his approach in life is if he HIMSELF felt the pain and lost.

But of course you wouldn’t feel sympathy if this happened to Jung, on the contrary you would even be glad and think that he has it long coming.

0

I also especially take issue that you don't want him to "meddle" with other people's business, when those very people are meddling (read: tormenting) people precious to him (read: Seol).

Is his method excessive? Maybe. But he has every right to intervene.

0

In fact you were so IMPARTIAL with the show that you went on to insult other people who possibly are introverted or diagnosed with mental ailments as, I paraphrase: NOT HUMAN.

You do need to read up a bit more, I think - what the definition of "human" is, and what the idea of "being human" is and how it's been contested throughout the ages in all the different contexts.

0

that was his last credibility down the drain, really. I thought with all of those rantings on how Jung resemble his BIL, there could not be anything lower than that. But, he can still sink deeper. Between a fictional character that he loathe so much, to calling people with mental problem not human.

I guess you need to read up on psychopathy. I never said introverts weren't human. Only that psychopaths don't display the traits that typically make us human, empathy, self awareness and a conscience. Introverts aren't necessarily psychopathic, but a lot of sneaky, manipulative, narcissists are.

0

@TJ - yeah, right. You have a problem with the one who is sneaky but not with the one who is violent and doesnt respect a girls boundaries. ......and your sister is an abuse victim?

What a strange attitude for the family member of such a person to take. Or do you think violent, impulsive men with a ~good heart~ who ~can't help themselves~, are never a danger to women?

Blast! I was loving this show and fully believing that the shift to In-ho in the past couple of episodes was a temporary thing. I had full confidence that the story would swing back around to Seol and Jung and give us a satisfying ending to their story. And for the record, I would have been fine with them not getting together, or for the ending to be left a bit open -- *provided that it fit with the direction that the show was originally going in*.

If you start with telling one story and end telling another, you end up with Frankenstien's monster, no matter how good each story might have been on its own.

Just know the biggest indication this was going downhill was the cutesy, trite way they portrayed In Ho's crush imo. I had a bad feeling then.

The love triangle is practically nonexistent in the webtoon (where it's currently at at least), so...

And the Jung scenes they filmed...if they'd kept them, the story would have seemed way more cohesive instead of a...mess.

I honestly wanted to throw a few things at the 'oppa' scene.

I mean, can they BE more gratuitous? Literally all it does is make Seol look like a flirt, however innocently we know she meant it.

0

...I hate to be one of those people, but Seol from the webtoon would have NEVER.

Hell, Seol from episodes 1-8 would have never either so

0

I was quite willing to accept that Drama Seol could be different, but that scene wasn't even consistent with Seol's previous portrayal - it was SO out of character for her. It's only thanks to Kim Go-eun that I didn't want to spit nails watching it.

0

I had the pleasure to puke a little on that oppa scene.

0

Strangely enough the super red cheeks were the reason I wasn't bothered by the In-ho crush originally. It did come off as trite and cheesy in the context of this drama and I figured that was on purpose, a sign that we weren't supposed to take it seriously. I never imagined that it would become a major plot point. I thought (or hoped) it was a fan-servicey moment that we would move on from within an episode or two at most.

My real worry didn't kick in until they had the crush influence In-ho's emotions while playing the piano, but with the fight scene happening one episode later I figured we'd be back on track this week. I was so so wrong.

This is exactly me. I actually thought they were just trying to ramp up SLS but also I thought maybe the guys were heading toward a reconciliation since we were finally shown more about what caused their rift. To me the show isn't actually so much about the romance but about the characters' relationships and figuring out living. For instance the Mooch guy finally got a kick in the ass with Jung's latest stunt and then Jung got outed as the CEO's son and I thought "this is good people are really feeling consequences being dropped on their heads." But now that all this backstory is going around I'm afraid I've been assuming too much. Especially since PHJ was ACTUALLY willing to make specific critical statements it's a huge red alert.

Can I just add to that, that at least in the webtoon, the tension was never about which man is Seol was going to end up with. It was about, "Is she going to get to know the real Jung or not? Can she accept the real Jung or not? Should she? Are they alike or aren't they?" etc. In the webtoon In-ho was more of a catalyst than a character in his own right--through their relationships/interactions with him we got to see new sides of both Seol and Jung. I haven't been watching, but I can't imagine how the story could even be a story if his character took over--unless we stick to the definition of storytelling you brought up facetiously lol.

"No I think they may have written an ending too close to the one the webtoon creator had in mind so changed the focus in post production. "

You can't just change focus in post-production to that extent. Post-production is when shooting has finished and you're editing, laying audio and music, effects and grading. To instigate production actions like switching out scenes of Jung's for In-Ho's or even re-shooting Jung's scenes for In-Ho, those are big production decisions, not post-produciton. And they're quire expensive decisions too - to re-shoot an entire scene, as that doesn't just comprise of one shot, but several, and you have the repeated costs of location, crew, equipment, insurance, fees, per diems, catering and additional transport.

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

But you can do it and evidently that's what they did or at least that's what everyone thinks they did. In Hollywood they shoot alternate endings to movies all the time. Trim scenes in post production, they've even dubbed in people's voices when they didn't like the sound of an actor's voice. I haven't been watching dramas long enough to know all the instances where a drama got changed in mid production because of the viewers but I do know of a couple. That's why the writer is often still writing the script sometimes just hours before the next scene is shot. You hear about actors getting only a few hours to study and learn their lines. It's at least better for the actors and the crew if changes are made post production in my opinion.

0

Required fields are marked *

Lol you are really trying it.

This isn't some Terence Malik film, the actor was treated badly enough to publicly air his grievance so you can keep pushing the 'it's just editing!' excuse all you want, between this and ur little 'personal history' claims you just seem like an anti who lacks empathy for how a real person was treated.

And you know what you yourself said about people who lack empathy....

0

You've clearly misread where I took issue with your statement. My first problem is with your term called "post-production". I have worked in the film industry and I was pointing out to you that your use of "post production" is incorrect.

Secondly, filming extra scenes after a production has wrapped principle filming - that's called shooting pick up scenes. In this scenario, they haven't looked at the rushes and thought - hmm...let's go back and re-shoot as that shot had a hair in the gate or whatever. In this case, it sounds like they decided to make scene switches, shoot alternative scenes during production itself, not post-production.

That means, your initial correlation - oh they wrote the ending too close to the writer, so they just switched in post - that's just erroneous. It means they had been calculating the switch for a while and with quite a bit of planning. The below the line cost for re-shooting is exorbitant, but shooting scenes alongside is cheaper. But this indicates that there was already something on the boil in the backdrop - not just a sudden turnaround due to the writer's displeasure, the way your statement implies.

As someone who's read the webtoon, it bugged me when I started to notice how Inho in the drama got Jung's scenes too. Like that part where Inho puts ointment on Seoul after the fight with Minsoo. That was Jung who did it in the webtoon. Also, after Seul's fight with her parents, she actually shares her feelings about the whole thing with Jung which was an important step in their relationship. They skipped all that.

Tweaking the scenes is somewhat fine but to completely change the plot of the story is disappointing. The drama is prioritizing Inho's crush over character development.

The main story is about Jung's weirdness & how he and Seoul discover & change each other. But the drama skipped many flashbacks to Jung's childhood that actually gives new shades to the mystery behind him. Even Inho in the webtoon has so many shades but the drama has reduced him to a lovelorn puppy.

The writers are doing a disservice to all the characters by distorting them. It's such a waste!

I really appreciate the site for covering this story. I've been reading hard-to-understand translations and have been struggling to get the nuances of what PHJ has been saying.

The entire situation is a dog's breakfast. And it's turning out to be a PR disaster as well. To woo an actor of PHJ's calibre to a challenging role and then to sideline him in such blatant fashion, is so mind blowing that you have to wonder if there aren't powerful forces at work here also.

I think it was reasonably clear that from about Ep. 11 onwards the show was on a downward slide. The unnecessary insertion of In-ho in places where he wasn't needed was telling to me that something was going on. I was hoping that 12 would stem the downturn but it was not to be.

It sounds like PHJ is upset that the integrity of the source material has been compromised to the point where the main character is incomprehensible to the uninitiated. I am one of those who have never read the webtoon but his acting was so good that I was still able to appreciate the character's perspective and duality.

I am wondering too if PHJ isn't speaking out also because he's hoping that in the interest of PR damage control that the production company would be forced to tweak the last couple of episodes and provide audiences with some explanation of the YJ's duality through flashbacks or actually add in the stuff they were supposed to from the original script.

oh dear this is so terrible.
i felt the same as javabeans, i enjoyed SKJ performance as Inho and felt it was an acceptable plot diversion and had faith that the story knew what it was doing.
To be honest, everything looks very ok to me until the latest episode 14 which in my opinion had the least Jung scenes ever. it was wierd in the sense that some scenes were not necessary and they should have more of him but still in my mind acceptable since he had impact scenes and Inho was going through his growth arc which i felt was nicely filmed and acted.

but this???
this is crazy.
Who the heck eliminates their lead man for no rhyme or reason. If the audience hadnt accepted PHJ well as Jung or ratings were sliding, maybe it would make some sense.
althought still wrong, but i get the logic
But hes doing well! So no reason for this at all.

I feel sad for both guys
SJK is having a career turning performance, he has never shone so bright in a role. From ep 1 - ep 12
even without all this shift in screeen time, he would still be the breakaway performance of this drama.
So this is all crazy, as now you turn public opinon against him for no reason at all, its sad coz in the end everyone is just going to say he is a scene stealer which is really not what he should get from his performance in this drama.

And i have nothing to add for PHJ, because for him seriously, the whole thing is just unjustified, uncalled for and unacceptable.

I believe they literally beg him to play the role despite the age gap, so wheres the logic to do this?
This is so mind baffling.
i dont believe the stories about a SJK having a powerful agency who is manupulating things, i dont quite think this is the reason. He came as a second lead so they know his place and he was received very well early in the series, no one smart enough will invite this sort of bad press. PHJ is not a newcomer himself and the director is someone who is too accomplished to be a puppet.

I'm so curious of the real reason.

Not knowing anything about the entertainment business, I wonder how much power PDs actually have. I can't imagine she can just unilaterally make all these changes without anyone noticing or speaking up. Given tvns record of valuing profit over integrity or loyalty, I wouldn't be surprised if skj did have a sponsor and the PD was pressured into changing the story. She would be a convenient scapegoat bc while actors can blame the PD, she cannot say anything without outing her employer.

As an aside, I thought about tvn extending citt and adding in the scenes that were cut. They could keep pointing fingers at the PD and say they were course correcting her, placate public sentiment, skj will have already had his extended airtime and the viewership ratings would be practically guaranteed.

It's just too bad that if there really were a sponsor, ttvn would not have learned anything from this. Sure, ratings may have dropped but they're still pretty good. And it's not like people will boycott tvn dramas bc they don't like the network. What does tvn have to lose?

When contacted, the PD told the journalist to ask higher ups and that she can't say anything on record. I have no idea if that's her trying to shirk responsibility by pushing it onto others or if she's trying to clue people in on this being a higher up decision beyond her power.

Her statement is also what's people have been using to accuse SKJ of having a sponsor because it's hard for them to think another legitimate reason they'd let a good drama that is getting good responses as it was to turn around like this. It also lends credence to this theory that the sponsor issue was a huge deal recently after an expose on TV on its prevalence and it might embolden people to speak up, which explains why PHJ would actually give an interview that is not completely positive about his project.

If this is not the case, the PD is really just pushing SKJ off a ledge by keeping mum and saying all this cryptic stuff.

Yikes. There was a recent expose on Sponsors? Oh boy, SKJ might be in trouble a couple ways then.

I was so not surprised by that expose. Sponsors are a real thing in many entertainment industries around the world.

As much as i never had a problem with the drama focusing on Baek Inho, given that he was what compelled me to continue reading the webtoon I'd given up on and watch the drama, it's disturbing to learn how it all came to be.

The production team is dead wrong for coaxing him so vigorously to sign him on, then have him film copious amounts of scenes only for them to cut it from the final product or shaft them to another actor. I'm honestly sorry it happened to PHJ even though as I mentioned above I'm a Inho fan at heart. But, it doesn't give people a right to attack SKJ. He signed up for a small role, not really expecting it to change, screaming Sponsorship is plain wrong.

I feel sorry for all the actors for the weird as hell tactics of this production team. Hope they all do well after this and this disaster doesn't follow them like a bad smell.

I'm very very disappointed. I was looking forward to more Yoo Jung and I thought they were going to give me that. I was not that unhappy with the too much screentime for Inho in the last 2 episodes because he was barely in ep 1.2.

Just majorly annoyed that the drama -- with awesome casting is just butchered into unrecognizable pieces. On another (irrelevant) note.. I'll just look forward to Bad Guys 2 when it (hopefully) comes out. #psychoticDeepPHJ !

Pretty sad about what happened. I haven't watched 13 and 14 though so I will, to see what they did to Sunbae. It's really unfair to Park Hae Jin especially if you think about the fact that he went aboard the drama while the train was empty and the destination unknown.

And the PD thing? That left me confused. Is PD good or bad? Last I heard about her(?), it was the cast showering her(/him?) praises. I guess what comes up does go back down.

I'm crossing my fingers for the ending to not disappoint. I've invested too much of my feelings! At least give me lot of Seol and her awesomeness if you can't give much of Jung!(btw, I like In-ho too but I don't think we need to have more of him beyond his Piano issues).

You need to watch 13 and 14 to see the blatant crazy decision/direction change. It'll be PAINFUL but will give you the full picture of how ridiculous the show has become in essentially turn its two leads to bystandards in InHo's Adventures.

I honestly fast forward the scene to where Bora, Eun Taek, Seol and Jung was on the screen. Oh and the last 5 minutes of the show. I did not listen to all of those beautiful classical music, or the brooding pianist, or the 'this is how you throw your trash when you are working in a restaurant' scene.

Maybe I should have, If only I pay a bit attention more, I might have a bit enlightened of classical music. #sigh

I'm kind of shocked at some of the (thankfully) few hate of PHJ's acting. I found his Jung to be very nuanced. I enjoy every moment that he's on screen. Especially when he's being creepy! Hehehe. Can't help it, he's so good at it. Also love his interactions with In Ho, not to mention flirting with Seol. I'm gonna be bummed about what we missed out on for a while I think.

What a major disappointment for this to happen to such a loved and long-awaited drama. I basically have been patiently waiting for this drama since last year, when Park Hae Jin was cast. I started reading the webtoon and completely love Jung as a character. So layered and interesting I almost can relate to him. As a fan of Park Hae Jin work, I believe he will be able to potray Jung greatly and he really does in the drama! Jung is , at least to me, the heart and soul of Cheese in the Trap. I'm afraid I'm starting to lose my faith for this drama. Too much to redeem in just 2 episode!! Show, please get a grip!!
If as a viewer and a fan I am this disappointed, can't even imagine how the actor will feel. Sigh. I hope the best for Park Hae Jin and always be rooting for him.
Cheese, you could have been good.

I'm PHJ's fan as well, and disappointed that this happens in his first major lead role (I'm counting Bad Guys as minor lead). He's done his best and I'm happy everyone can see that. Looking forward to his future projects !

I watch this show to see Jung do "evil" things. It upsets me that there is so little of it.

Come on?! PHJ wooden? Have you seen how chilly he could be with tha wooden smile? The slight shift in the eye and the slight curl of the lip? Some people can't appreciate subtle acting.

It's because PHJ wasn't playing the piano with a blush cg effect on his face, so they thought he was "wooden" and "boring".

By the same token, maybe they should have drawn frowning eyebrows or evil mustaches on Jung's face so some audience can understand that's he "evil mode" now lol

(Because detecting facial twitches and steely eye glaze changes are not obvious enough)

Despite its problems (which I've posted about elsewhere), I'm still enjoying the show and hoping the last two episodes will be successful.

That said, I'm upset for Park Hae Jin. My understanding is he was the butt of poor, libellous reporting some time ago that stated he was tricking people with a false illness to get out of the military. Then it was said he had schizophrenia! Though he turned out to have a completely verified medical condition, the scandal was enough to make him go to China for his acting career, before returning for his "comeback".

Now this.

I wouldn't be surprised if he left and never came back this time. He's been watching the drama at the same time we have. How horrible to be waiting to see your scenes and you just aren't there, and the dawning realization that not only aren't you the main lead, but the character you're playing will be incomprehensible to the audience in the way it should be because of all the cut scenes.

I do feel for him.

Reading the interview has made me more mad.

I have watched PHJ drama's and honestly he is good at portraying his character. Have you seen him on bad guys, he was so good at his character that you can't even guess which direction he might go and it's the same way he is portraying Yoo Jung' character.

I love SKJ but he cannot hold a scene. He has not reached the level of acting were he can hold a scene, which made the drama more useless. There is more to acting than having a pretty face.

There is something more going on here. Why mess up a perfectly good drama. And for him to speak out, there must be a lot going on, as if they want to kill his career.

I have stopped watching it after ep 10. It became redundant. Even if his schedule was busy, how can you not tell him about the reward vacation and stuff till he read it in the news.

Someone is out for him. The things that can happen in Korean Entertainment Industry.

SMH.

I agree. I'm surprised at some of the comments saying PHJ's acting is wooden and boring while praising SKJ's acting. I've only seen PHJ once before this drama (My Love From the Star) so I was surprised at how amazing he was able to portray the emotions needed to express the layers his character has. SKJ has greatly improved but still cannot fill a scene himself. He's still flat and one dimensional.

Stay tuned folks the Soompi forum posted a link to an article that said the Chinese distributor is in talks to get the cut footage. I can't confirm as its in another language but details are vague. It would be kind of crazy if they could change the trajectory of the drama but if we could get a re-edited series I would swoon.

I suspects that's too big a hope, but maybe we'll see the cut footage sooner rather than on Dvd?

A re-edited series featuring the scenes that were actually shot and IN THE SCRIPT would almost restore my faith. Almost.

But it's rather sad that it's come to this, that Park Hae-jin's interests had to be defended by the Chinese distributor because even they realised things had gone too far.

Well, Tamra the Island has 2 versions: the one that aired live on tv and the Director's Cut (which was way better because it included the scenes that were originally cut). CITT may end up being like this too.

I really hope tvN would air a proper cut of CitT at some point. Or at the very least the DVD would contain the drama as it was meant to be shown.

I hope the Chinese distributor won't dub the series so I can still hear the actors' original voices. And I hope someone subs the (hopefully) re-cut version.

There's a lot of hoping there. But honestly I've given up on CitT. I was angry before but I just feel tired now. I'll check out, watch Signal and Liar Game (just to remind myself that tvN has churned out quality dramas in the past), and check in on Tuesday to watch the inevitable trainwreck.

same. Maybe even watch Misaeng, which I've been meaning to but didn't get around to it, to tell myself that at least ONE webtoon adaptation went right.
I don't get it - they had Misaeng. They knew that they can't mess with great work and a big fanbase. Like, tvn, do you think?
Hopefully Pied Piper will be good since Liar Game was so good!

yeah, the Chinese distributor may get the footage but for us non-Chinese fans, there may well be no chance to watch the show as it should have been. Especially if it's dubbed.

I'll probably need a full viewing of Answer Me 1997, to remind myself why I shouldn't just quit watching kdramas.

I'd say you know you really fucked up when both Korean and international fans are tearing you a new one for what the drama has become in your hands.

But the Chinese distributor negotiating for Park Hae-jin's scenes just takes the cake because THAT was how little they trusted the production after all of this came to light.
